Summer ain’t over yet! 😎☀️ So… does your pet need to wear sunscreen? Skin cancer is seen in pets, but that doesn’t mean that sunscreen is necessarily the answer. Pets with white or light-colored fur tend to be more predisposed to skin cancer than other pets. Light-colored pets are prone to developing skin cancer from the sun on their nose, the tips of the ears and around their eyelids and lips. Instead of using sunscreen, you should be mindful and limit their time in the bright sunshine during peak hours. Limiting your pet’s time in the hot summer sun also prevents overheating and dehydration. For more info on pets and sunscreen safety, visit aspca.org/news (link in bio!) #aspca #dogsofinstagram #summer

Big Ag must think consumers (like you) are really stupid. 🤨 So far, they’re currently pushing bills in 28 states to prohibit animal-product alternatives like almond “milk,” soy “butter,” cashew “cheese,” veggie “burgers” and other plant-based foods from using these words on their labels. Restrictive definitions of words like “milk” and “meat” would exclude products that don’t originate from live animals, forcing makers of plant-based foods to go through the costly process of renaming and relabeling their products. Six states—Mississippi, Arkansas, South Carolina, Wyoming, North Dakota and Missouri—have signed these bills into law. Other states are likely to follow. It’s not surprising that Big Ag is pursuing these laws: Not because it genuinely cares about public confusion, of which there is zero evidence, but because these alternative products pose serious competition in the marketplace. As demand shifts due to animal welfare, environmental and public health concerns, Big Ag wants to protect conventional, inhumane, unsustainable factory farming practices by crippling its competitors—by any means necessary. You can take a stand against Big Ag’s insincere, phony, petty laws by getting savvy about food labels and joining the movement to support more humane options. When Sylvia F. spotted and approached a tangerine-colored male cat behind a Manhattan housing complex at 99th Street and Second Avenue on May 7, she noticed an alarming gash on the underside of the cat’s neck. She scooped up the injured stray and brought him to the ASPCA Animal Hospital, where Dr. Andra Gordon, carefully triaged the ailing cat and noticed a very tight hair tie around his neck. She promptly removed it. The medical team cleaned and surgically closed the deep wound caused by the hair tie, which had burrowed through his skin tissue. Dr. Melanie Benetato then covered the cat’s incision with a neck wrap, which caused less irritation than a traditional collar and prevented the cat—now named Larry—from scratching the area. Shortly after his wound closure, Larry was discharged to the ASPCA Adoption Center for continued care. After two weeks of antibiotics and pain medication, the resilient cat—with his neck wrap still in place—was sent to a foster home to await more procedures. Once Larry was all healed and back at the ASPCA Adoption Center, his eager-for-attention personality and flame-colored coat soon caught the attention of Teaisha P., who was looking for a feline companion. Arnold arrived at the ASPCA just two days before Christmas in 2016. He was brought in by the New York City Police Department ( @NYPD) after he was reportedly found tied to a bench in a park. “He was underweight, had skin lesions and multiple rib fractures,” says Dr. Alison Liu, a Forensic Veterinarian at the ASPCA. “Most significantly medically, he had a heart murmur and pulmonic stenosis, which is a narrowing of one of the heart valves. He had a special procedure with a cardiologist to dilate the valve.” Arnold was monitored closely, and with time and medical attention, his physical condition improved. Despite his medical condition, Arnold was happy and healthy! With a great quality of life, Arnold was looking for an understanding family who would overlook his medical issues and see him for the wonderful dog he is. Arnold was in luck when potential adopter Jordan toured the Adoption Center, where he was introduced to various adoptable animals. In the second-to-last kennel of the tour, Arnold waited to greet Jordan. “I vividly remember Arnold coming up the glass and hopping up to say hi,” recalls Jordan fondly. “He tilted his head to the side, one of his ears perked up while the other was flopped over. I instantly fell in love.” To read the rest of Arnold (now named Arcturus or “Arc”) and Jordan’s happy tail, visit aspca.org/news (link in bio!) #aspca #pitbullsofinstagram #dogsofinstagram

ACT NOW‼️Between 2016-2018, a dangerous infection tore through at least 17 states. The antibiotic-resistant disease originated from puppy mill puppies sold at Petland stores. More than 100 people who came into contact with these dogs fell ill—including pet store employees and children—but the true scope of this outbreak remains unknown. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) wants to gather more information about what happened, including identifying additional victims and the role played by the pet industry’s irresponsible practices. Please sign our petition urging the CDC to move forward with this important investigation! On a hot summer day in late August 2018, Jessica J. exited a Manhattan subway station when she suddenly heard a faint cry. “It sounded like it was coming from a nearby garbage can,” recalls Jessica. “Then my eye caught a plastic bag rolling around on the street.” She lifted the bag and peeked inside and found a newborn orange and white kitten, with his eyes still closed and umbilical cord still attached. “It makes me so sad to think someone threw him out,” says Jessica. She hailed a cab and headed to the ASPCA, holding the kitten in a box. At the ASPCA Adoption Center, Jessica relinquished the tiny kitten to Stephen Cameron, Coordinator of Admission and Foster Programs, and said she’d be willing to adopt the kitten once he was healthy and ready. The day-old kitten was then named Ultimo and placed in the ASPCA Kitten Nursery. Jessica phoned nursery staff every few weeks to check on Ultimo. By early October, after he started eating solid food, Ultimo went to a temporary home with an ASPCA foster caregiver. ACT NOW‼️The @USDAgov has a chance to prevent animal abuse at commercial breeding facilities (a.k.a. puppy mills) but their recent proposal falls short. This proposal, together with the USDA’s ongoing refusal to make complete inspection records publicly available, raises concerns about the agency’s continued efforts to hide information about animal businesses from American taxpayers. Take action today and tell the USDA that they must do more to enforce animal welfare laws and ensure that known abusers aren’t given a free pass to profit off innocent animals: aspca.org/usda-breeders (or watch our IG Story and SWIPE UP) #aspca #dogsofinstagram

Ginny didn’t know what love was until she met Claire and Nick because she’d spent the first two years of her life suffering as a victim of dogfighting. She was rescued from a Bronx backyard on a rainy day in May 2017, tethered on a thick rope to a barrel. Also found in the backyard were seven more dogs inside of plywood boxes. Following their rescue from that deplorable situation, the 11 dogs, including Ginny, were all taken to the ASPCA Animal Recovery Center (ARC), where they were given individual treatment and time to heal. After a few weeks, Ginny was able to move to the ASPCA Adoption Center, where she was made available for adoption. It was clear that to fully move on from her past, Ginny would not only need a lot of support, but she would also need pet parents who truly understood her. “We didn’t know what type of dog we were going to adopt,” Nick tells us. “But I think when we met Ginny that day, we knew she was the one.” Watch Ginny’s Happy Tail on IGTV right now! 📺🐶 #aspca #adoptdontshop #pitbullsofinstagram #fightingchance Photo of Ginny as a flower girl courtesy of Longbrook Photography.

In December 2016, the ASPCA assisted in the rescue of 155 dogs from a North Carolina dogfighting ring. Of these dogs, one in particular went through great lengths to find her way home from North Carolina, up to the Big Apple. Her name is Franny. After her rescue in North Carolina, Franny was understandably fearful. Given her state, it was decided that Franny would do best at the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center (BRC), where she would be able to receive specialized training and care to help her learn that the outside world isn’t such a scary place. In her time at the BRC, it soon became clear to everyone that this former dogfighting victim was nothing but a sweetheart, with endless amounts of love to give. She just needed the right adopters to truly see her.  For some time, James W. had been looking for the right dog to join the home he shared with his girlfriend Alexandra. When he spotted Franny online, he knew there was something special about her. “I fell in love immediately,” James says. “From her bio, photos and video—she was the perfect match.” Watch the rest of Franny’s Happy Tail on IGTV, or visit aspca.org/news #aspca #fightingchance #adoptdontshop #pitbullsofinstagram

Today is National Dogfighting Awareness Day! When federal law enforcement busts a dogfighting operation, the dogs they rescue can be held for months or years while court cases drag on. Even with the best care, many dogs suffer further as their stress and behavior issues spiral. What they need are real homes. We can help fix this problem by ensuring that dogs rescued from fighting are moved through the system quickly. Passage of the HEART (Help Extract Animals from Red Tape) Act will reduce unnecessary delays in the rehoming of victims rescued in federal cases. Help us give innocent victims of dogfighting a #fightingchance at freedom. Sign the HEART Act Petition today by visiting: aspca.org/FightingChance ❤️ (#LinkInBio!) #aspca #dogsofinstagram #pitbullsofinstagram #dontbullymybreed

Kenai and Shenandoah were brought to the ASPCA in September 2018 after they were rescued from a difficult situation. They were both shy kitties who relied on each other for comfort and support, so the team at the ASPCA Adoption Center determined that they should go home together. Kenai was also diagnosed with Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), which can weaken his immune system. Despite sounding scary, FIV is extremely manageable, and cats with FIV are able to live full, happy lives. To help them come out of their shells, Kenai and Shenandoah were transferred to the ASPCA Offices in Midtown #NYC as a part of our Office Foster Program – giving them the opportunity to decompress and get more comfortable with human interaction. It was around this time that Allegra D. decided to adopt a cat – so she began browsing available kitties on the ASPCA website. “I liked the idea of them keeping each other company,” recalls Allegra. “So, once I wrapped my head around adopting two cats, it was hard to let the idea go. Why not save two lives instead of one?” To read the rest of Kenai and Shenandoah’s (now renamed Hunter and Cricket) happy tail, visit aspca.org/news (#LINKINBIO) #aspca #adoptdontshop #catsofinstagram

Two years ago this month, the United States Department of Agriculture ( @USDAgov) removed inspection reports and other information about thousands of commercial dog breeders from its website. This information is vital in our efforts to monitor puppy mills and to help the animals who languish in them year after year. These reports used to be available to anyone with internet access, and suddenly they were gone. In mid-May 2018 we filed a federal lawsuit against the USDA. But why is the USDA protecting cruel breeders over the animals and consumers it is entrusted to protect? Visit aspca.org/news (#LinkInBio) to learn more and sign our petition demanding USDA give back full access to this life-saving information. #aspca #stoppuppymills #adoptdontshop #dogsofinstagram
