Headed down to assess damage and meet with local leaders, first responders, and state officials in Ridgecrest and surrounding areas affected by the earthquakes. Thankful for all those working tirelessly to support these communities.
Happy #Pride San Francisco! #loveislove
To the love of my life and forever life partner — who inspires me every day to lead with empathy, care, and compassion for others — happy birthday!! Montana, Hunter, Brooklynn, Dutch and I love you so much, @jennifersiebelnewsom! ❤️
For the first time in our state’s history, the Pride flag has been raised at our State Capitol!! #pridemonth 🏳️🌈
So grateful for our family. Wishing everyone taking care of a child—whether you’re a dad, uncle, grandparent, or guardian—a Happy Father’s Day!
Every day in America, 100 lives are lost to gun violence. Every year, 3 million children witness that violence. It doesn’t have to be this way. It’s time to step up. Hold elected officials accountable — and end the NRA’s death grip on our laws. #NationalGunViolenceAwarenessDay #WearOrange
100 years ago today the US Senate passed the 19th amendment. The suffragists who fought for the right to vote made our democracy a more just, equal system — and our country a better place. But there’s still so much to be done. From reproductive freedom, to equal pay, to representation on our boards and in our elected offices... we need to honor their legacy by continuing the fight to make this a more perfect Union. Proud of @jennifersiebelnewsom who is representing CA in DC this week on the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Committee. She carries on the legacy of the Suffragists everyday with her tireless fight for women’s equality and a better world for all our children!! 💪#WomensVote100
There’s only the California Dream, attainable and aspirational. Around the world, it’s a beacon light. Mark my words, California – we are the light at the end of the tunnel. #CADEM19
Harvey Milk’s bravery is another reminder of our commitment to demand justice and freedom for all. His legacy doesn’t just live on in the hearts and minds of the LGBTQ community, but in all of us who continue to fight for equality. Today, and every day, we honor him. #HarveyMilkDay
BREAKING: Moments ago, the latest in a surge of anti-abortion legislation in our country was signed into law in Alabama. Make no mistake, this is about power. About control. About denying women the right to make their own reproductive choices. We must defend Roe v. Wade and reproductive freedom. If we don’t, the cost will be women’s lives. That's why I'm asking you right now to take action – click the link in my bio to make a donation to support organizations fighting every day to defend access to safe, legal abortion in our country.
Happy Mother’s Day, @jennifersiebelnewsom! Thank you for your love. Your patience. Your passion for life. And for being the ultimate role model -- always teaching our kids to lead with empathy, care, and compassion. You are our everything. We love you!! ❤️
“We must not love our lives so much that we avoid taking the risks in life that history calls for.” - Saint Oscar Romero A powerful and moving experience to visit Saint Romero’s home and the chapel where he was assassinated. He was a true warrior of faith and justice, and an example to us all that it is never the wrong time to do the right thing.
Kids learning to code. Surfers opening up academies for at risk youth. Artists displaying moving, powerful portrayals of moments in time. . Corruption, violence, and lack of opportunity are all contributing to migration from Central America. And rather than supporting pathways to safety and opportunity — investing in programs like these that help address migration’s root causes — the White House is cutting aid and further fueling migration.
What a day, yesterday. Hearing directly from folks who have fled their homes because of violence, corruption, and extortion. Learning more about the Salvadoran culture. Hearing about how the very US aid that Trump has threatened to cut is helping curb migration, create economic opportunity, and protect so many from violence. One thing is crystal clear — we have to address immigration in a comprehensive and thoughtful way. The divisive rhetoric coming from Washington is doing nothing but creating more chaos and harm to this country. It’s reckless, irresponsible, and CA will not stand for it.
Peace is not the product of terror or fear... Peace is not the silent result of violent repression. Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all to the good of all. Peace is dynamism. Peace is generosity. It is right and it is duty. - Saint Óscar Romero
In one week, two Parkland survivors and the father of a Sandy Hook victim have taken their lives. The cost of gun violence in our country is too high, and too many have sat back and let it happen. We must take immediate action to end gun violence and the trauma that comes with it. Please don’t hesitate to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
America has long been a shining beacon of hope. A place of refuge for those fleeing violence. A place that welcomes immigrants and sees our diversity as our strength. In the absence of federal leadership, California will carry that tradition forward.
Grateful to have met with Speaker Pelosi yesterday! California is lucky to have a champion like you fighting for us in Washington.
Kamala Harris is a fearless fighter. A voice for the voiceless and vulnerable. From advancing equality to defending immigrant communities to expanding opportunity, she'll do what's right. Proud to endorse her for President.
Happy Valentine's Day to my rock and love of my life, @jennifersiebelnewsom — could not have imagined a better soulmate and life partner than you!
Grateful to have had Allyn Pierce with us at the State of the State. He’s a registered nurse in Paradise who — instead of saving himself — drove back through the fire to treat the injured and safely evacuate everyone. This is what we do in California.
Grateful to be able to spend some time with @gabbygiffords today, talking about how CA can lead the nation on gun violence prevention. Your courage, strength, and dedication are an inspiration to us all.
10 years after the #LillyLedbetter Fair Pay Act, inspired by Lilly’s fight for equality, women across the country continue to be paid less than men. In California, women workers make on average 88 cents for every $1 men make. The averages for women of color are even worse. We’ve still got work to do.
With an administration that threatens our values and plays games with our government... grateful for our champion, Speaker Pelosi.
As we remember the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. today, don’t forget this: he never held office — moral leadership doesn't require a title, just the will to do the right thing. #MLKDay
Thousands of federal workers are being put in impossible situations — working without pay for multiple paychecks. That means missing mortgage payments for their homes, taking out more loans to send their kids to college, or worse. We can’t let this go on.
California: TOMORROW is your last chance to sign up for healthcare coverage for 2019! Spread the word, and make sure your friends and family get signed up before tomorrow’s enrollment deadline.
The science is unanimous: expanding paid family leave will mean a better life for our kids, our workers, our economy, and our future. It’s not just the right thing to do — it’s a developmental necessity. And in California, we’re committed to getting this done.
Week 1: ✔️
This avoidable and pointless shutdown has already impacted California’s relief efforts. NOW, the President of the United States is trying to take funds away from communities devastated by natural disasters to pay for a pointless border wall that Americans don’t need or want. These games need to end.
Don’t miss your chance! Make sure to visit coveredca.com to sign up for your 2019 health coverage before next week’s open enrollment deadline.
Healthcare should be a basic human right. Republicans in Washington are already trying to attack our efforts to provide quality, affordable healthcare to everyone who calls California home. We cannot accept the status quo — we must keep demanding better care for ALL Californians.
Mr. President — Disasters and recovery are no time for politics. I’m already taking action to modernize and manage our forests and emergency responses. The people of California — folks in Paradise — should not be victims to partisan bickering. Just yesterday, Oregon Governor Kate Brown, Washington Governor Jay Inslee, and I sent a letter asking the federal government to work with us in taking on these unprecedented wildfires. We have been put in office by the voters to get things done, not to play games with lives.
California has always helped write America’s future. That’s why one of my first acts as governor is a series of bold, first in the nation actions to lower prescription drug prices and move California closer to health care for all. We will use both our market power and our moral power to demand fairer prices for prescription drugs. And we’ll ask the federal government that states like California be empowered to truly innovate and transform our healthcare systems: to develop a single-payer health system to achieve universal coverage, contain costs, and promote quality and affordability. We will not accept the status quo — we will demand better care for ALL of California.
The story of our state is the story of a dream -- one that has drawn strivers and seekers here forever. It’s what brought my family to California three generations ago -- the promise not just of a better life but a bigger one, with opportunities they couldn’t find anywhere else in the world. I talked a lot in my speech today about creating a California for All -- the idea that the California Dream should be available to every Californian -- not just the privileged few. But every dream depends on the dreamers. It is up to us to renew the California Dream for a new generation. And now more than ever -- it is up to us to defend it. The country is watching us. The world is waiting on us. The future depends on us.
