It's going to be another hot hot week this week! ☀️ 😎 This combination of heat and humidity increases the risk for heat-related health issues, especially for the elderly and those with chronic health problems, such as lung and heart disease. Here's how you can beat the heat, be prepared, and stay safe: . 🏠 Remain inside as much as possible. ❄️ Use air conditioning to stay cool at home, or go to a place that has a/c, such as a local cooling station (you can find these stations at portal.311.nyc.gov). 🌳 If you must work outdoors, schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned spaces. 👋 Check on any neighbors, family, or friends who may be vulnerable and alone. ☎️ NYC residents can call 3-1-1 for more tips. Our amazing drivers and volunteers will continue to work hard this week, this summer, and all year round to get our nourishing and much-needed meals to our clients. Thank YOU for making our work possible!
#PrideMonth is over but our #Pride is forever! Stay tuned for more #GodsLoveStoriesOfPride from members of our community who were proudly with us at the very beginning and have been with us ever since. 📸 : @kimmancusophotography

"I was there at Stonewall. I remember the tear gas and people running in every direction. It was scary and it was exciting – and I was proud to see my community fighting back. We were sick and tired of being treated like third-class citizens. I started volunteering at God’s Love in 1987. My lover had passed away, I was very depressed. I didn’t know what to do with my life. I was working, but I was still very depressed. It was so hard for me to even get out of bed. A friend of mine told me about God’s Love. I thought I’d go work for them in honor of Donald. I went and spoke to Ganga in her apartment, and Jane, the founders of God’s Love. They immediately put me to work delivering meals. This work was so meaningful, it gave me something wonderful to think about and to do. God’s Love rescued me from my deep depression and for that, I’ll be forever grateful. During those days, there was no kitchen. Ganga would call restaurants and they would donate meals out of their kitchens. After work I’d go to the restaurant, pick up the meal, take it it the address that Ganga gave me. I’d make 3-4 deliveries at a time, 5 days a week. I did that for a couple years. Midtown, uptown, downtown, I’d go anywhere to deliver. The restaurant owners were so loving, compassionate, and caring and responsive to the AIDS crisis. They were so happy to give. They said thank you for doing your work, gave me the meal in the takeout bag, and I took it to the person. I was happy to make these deliveries, and take a little bit of time for each client to check in on them, see how they were doing, and connect. I felt like I was giving back in a way in honor of the friends who took care of Donald and me while he was sick. I think about Donald every time I volunteer. I do this in his memory. I hope that my legacy is that I’ve served, that I’ve helped people. I can hardly believe it’s been 50 years since Stonewall. I’m so proud to have been a part of this movement that has made us all feel equal. I’m proud to be a part of the LGBTQ community, and I’m so proud to be a volunteer at God’s Love." ~ James Strickland, delivery volunteer (photos 1 and 2 with his lover Donald and photo 3, today)

At our earliest Pride Marches, we would shout, "We're hot! We're free! And weeeeee deliver!" to the thousands of people along the route who came out to cheer us and the rest of NYC on in all of our Pride magic. All these years later, we're still proudly marching, and proudly making a difference one meal at a time. So much has changed since our earliest days: we broadened our mission to serve those living with more than 200 unique diagnoses. We have shifted our delivery model to chilled and frozen meals, to provide our clients with greater flexibility. And what started as one woman delivering one meal to one man dying from AIDS has grown to a fleet of 15,000 volunteers cooking and delivering more than 1.9 million meals to more than 7,500 individuals each year. But one thing has remained constant— our commitment to providing individually tailored, nutritious meals to the most vulnerable among us. Free to clients, and full of love. ❤️❤ #tbt #feedyourpride
Thank you @brookebcnn for choosing God’s Love! #Repost @brookebcnn ・・・ My 16th #40before40: GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY. (Plus who says hair nets aren’t super sexy?!) 😉I just spent the last two hours prepping food with my new awesome fellow volunteer friends at God’s Love We Deliver. (S/o to @vanessayurkevich for recommending this place!). From their website: “The mission of @godslovenyc is to improve the health and well-being of men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses by alleviating hunger and malnutrition. We prepare and deliver nutritious, high-quality meals to people who, because of their illness, are unable to provide or prepare meals for themselves.” I walked away asking myself a) what the hell took me so long to sign up?! b) when’s the last time I spent two hours with strangers who shared a common mission: to serve c) how did I not walk away with at least one of those brownies?! (actually I did, thanks Shaine!) It took my #40before40 to get my ass in that food kitchen... and I’m totally gonna go back. I love that I got to meet several of the “regulars.” ❤️ Who in NYC wants to join me? #volunteer #giveback #serve #40before40

"I had been a reporter on the health beat at a NJ daily in the late '80s and wrote extensively on AIDS at the height of the crisis when people were dying all around us. I moved to NYC in 1990 and connected to God's Love. For the next four years I volunteered on the Wednesday evening shift. I was no longer writing what I thought were important articles about AIDS but I felt that I was filling a need I had to help deal with the crisis in my own tiny way. In 1994 a good friend was dying of AIDS-related causes and my husband and I were his care buddies. He had a live-in partner, but we would step in and help. At the time my marriage was falling apart, but I stayed with my husband until John died. I felt it was my moral duty to stay at John's side. We hosted a memorial service for John and I left soon after. My older brother's best friend from childhood called me out of the blue to say he needed a friend and asked if we could get together. His partner had just died of AIDS. He lived around the corner from me and I was very involved in caring for him when he, too, was dying. I was with him when he died. After that I fell into a depression. Just too much sadness and hopelessness. Flash forward to 2017. A great friend from the God's Love family pulled me back in. I've been volunteering ever since. I view my volunteering as a way to honor my dearly departed friends, among so many who died in the '80s and early '90s before there were medications that are available today. I feel like I am somehow connecting with them via God's Love and it makes me feel good to be doing good. I have had to deal with many of my own health issues including two kinds of cancer, and I feel like working at God's Love is sharing that I care about others who are sick and that I understand how hard it is to cope, especially for those of us who live alone. In terms Stonewall, one of my brothers is gay and so is my ex-husband. I am glad that we have come a little way forward since Stonewall to make it easier for people to live in a more inclusive environment. And, by the way, my ex-husband is my best friend in the world." ~ Louise Kramer, volunteer, pictured here with her ex-husband Joel

Twenty years ago our volunteer Richie made a decision with his son that would change the course of his life. He and his son David would regularly meet on Thursday nights to go out to dinner. One Thursday David couldn’t make it and he didn’t want to tell his father exactly why. The next week was the same. What was going on? What was a father to think? That’s when Richie learned that David had been urged by their rabbi to serve the community. And that he should do so quietly, and with humility. So David did not tell his father what he was up to on Thursday nights, which was volunteering in the kitchen every week at God’s Love. And so, inspired by David and thankful for what a decent son he and his wife, Dr. Jeri Fink, had raised, Richie began volunteering for God’s Love. He originally committed to just three months but hasn't stopped since. For a while Richie, David and his younger son Russell would all volunteer together. And since his retirement several years ago, Richie has expanded his volunteering to Monday nights as well. Richie loves how he and his family have been able to care for so many clients and their families over all these years. This was the best gift any child could give a father – the gift of community and friendship and knowing you are making a difference in so many other lives being served by God’s Love. For dads living with severe illness, the joys of fatherhood can be a real challenge. But you can help by making a donation that will give a father in need a nutritious meal and a helping hand. Please donate in celebration of #FathersDay: http://bit.ly/2I8GJKc Pictured here: Richie with sons David and Russell P.S. want to volunteer as a family team? Sign up here: http://bit.ly/2zulaMJ

“I first started volunteering 20 years ago when my late boyfriend had AIDS. He was lucky because I liked to cook and I took care of him. But I had 3 friends who were dying from AIDS and they were really starving. So I remember coming here and working in our basement kitchen, until my friends were too sick and I couldn’t volunteer any more. . I am in the generation that witnessed the beginning of AIDS. With my friends in the early 80s I’d see them and ask, “What is this little spot?” and it was Kaposi Sarcoma. At that time we had no idea what that meant. And then they died. I mean, they were just dropping like flies. Fortunately, many of my friends had partners, but for those who didn’t have a partner, they were literally dying alone and hungry. And that’s why God’s Love We Deliver is so vital to the gay community. But to all of us – they filled such an important need at such a critical time for people, and they still do. . I’m a cancer survivor and I know what it’s like to be sick and need help. With God’s Love, I know that for someone receiving the food, I’m helping them. This might be the last meal that someone on the program eats, and I’m honored I get to help them and get to be a part of it. There’s nothing like volunteering at God’s Love. When it’s my volunteer day, I feel fabulous. I’m so inspired. Every time I’m here, I think about everyone we lost. I volunteer in honor of them. But I also think about all the people we are helping today, and I work for them. I want them to know how much we care.” ~ weekly kitchen volunteer, Richard Fung #GodsLoveStoriesOfPride #FeedYourPride
