Last week, @malalafund and I visited #Ethiopia, where I met girls who are in school, girls who are coding, girls who are using storytelling to help inspire other girls. I also met girls who came to Addis Ababa, the country's capital, from rural areas. Many were promised an education, but were instead forced into domestic labour. Ethiopia has made great progress on education - but with more than five million girls out of school, we have more work to do. Follow my IG stories this week to learn more about the young women and girls' education advocates I met in Ethiopia. Thank you to the organisations pictured here: @noble.cup, @icoglabsofficial, @yegna_official, @girleffect, @iieglobal and Population Council.

Thank you for all the birthday wishes and love. 🙏🙏 I'm spending the day with education advocates in Ethiopia. Everywhere I go, girls are breaking down barriers that have held them back for far too long. I am proud of everything these young women have accomplished — but we must keep fighting and making progress. My dream is to live in a world where every girl can choose her own future. The greatest gift you can give me — and our world — is to support @MalalaFund so we can send even more girls to school next year. Link in bio. With gratitude, Malala

Last week I traveled to Paris with my friend Frances, an education advocate from Nigeria. We were there to ask #G7 leaders to double education aid to West Africa, where millions of girls can't go to school. Frances told President @emmanuelmacron about her work helping young women in Nigeria develop leadership skills and advocate for their education — and together we asked him to prioritise education so more girls can go to school. In sub-Saharan Africa, 75% of girls start school — but only 8% will finish their secondary education. The rest of them, the vast majority, will be forced to set aside their aspirations and face early marriage or a lifetime of insecure work. Our presidents and prime ministers have the power to determine budgets and change the lives of millions of girls. Frances and I urged them to invest in education. While in France, we also visited coding students at @simplonco. With support from @apple, Simplon offers free coding, programming and app development classes to marginalised communities including young women and refugees. Three young women presented their app designs to us - they were amazing and I can't wait to see what they make next!

I wrote #WeAreDisplaced because we hear so much about refugees and immigration - but we don’t hear enough from refugees themselves, especially girls and young women. These are stories of harrowing journeys, lost loved ones and longing for home. The resilient girls in this book show readers the real lives behind the statistics, news reports and rhetoric we hear every day. Proceeds from every book sold will benefit the girls in the book and @MalalaFund’s work for girls’ education. How can you help refugees today? Buy this book and learn about their lives in their own words. Link in bio.

I have visited girls in favelas, slums, refugee camps and war zones. The hardest thing is to see a girl nearly my age, with all the dreams and aspirations that I have, stuck in a situation she didn’t create and unable to choose her own future. Today is International Day of the Girl. Let’s make it more than just feminist T-shirts and hashtags. If we truly believe “the future is female” or that “girls run the world,” we need to support girls on the front lines of the fight for education and equality. This week my portrait, by artist @shirin__neshat, was added to the National Portrait Gallery in London. I hope it will remind visitors that girls everywhere are fighting for change in their communities and countries — their stories must also be heard. Many thanks to Shirin for her beautiful work and Dr. @nicholascullinan, the team at @nationalportraitgallery and @outsetart for welcoming me.

So happy to be back in #Canada today! Took a boat ride down the Ottawa River, tried a BeaverTail and spoke with Prime Minister @justinpjtrudeau about advancing initiatives for girls’ education. 🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦

I started blogging at age 11. It was a way for me to share my challenges, my dreams, my world - and a way to let others know what girls in my community were facing. Today I want to help girls like me share their stories. Please subscribe to Assembly - a for girls, by girls platform - to meet a new generation of young leaders. Link in my bio.
