We had some amazing meal groups visit the house to prepare and serve homemade meals for RMH BC families to enjoy. The act of sharing a meal together allows families to connect after difficult days and catch up with each other without having to worry about food (and the dishes!). Thank you to groups like @adpi_ubc, @Grosvenor.Americas, @Omicron_aec and @Whitecapsfc for bringing your wonderful volunteers to cook delicious meals for our families. Join us this summer to cook a meal in the House – there are a few openings remaining! Kali, RMH BC’s art therapist, helps families work their imagination and their senses by using hands to create art and solve problems. Through art, kids can work through their emotions in a different way, through creating characters and telling stories. She finds that working with clay, a healing material, is especially helpful for kids who aren’t able to play outside. It allows them to make a mess, get dirty, and do typical kids things. Thank you to the Arnold and Anita Silber Family Foundation for making our art therapy program possible. #homeawayfromhome #keepingfamiliesclose #arttherapy #charity #family

Today we celebrate a different type of milestone: the 50th Family Meal cooked by Oikos. The group of friends (not to be confused with the yogurt brand) have been cooking homemade meals for families since 2015. Thousands of pounds of chicken, spinach, ice cream and pizza have been served by this rotating group of over 50 generous volunteers who have cooked and served over 5,000 plates of food. “Oikos” means “#family” in Greek and this group of friends have become an important part of the RMH BC family. #thankyou #homeawayfromhome #volunteer #giveback #champions

Eloise shares her passion for dance with kids staying in the House in a weekly Dance Class program. Once a week, she is greeted by eager kids of all ages, ready to get their bodies moving. Each class is different – some are more creative and some are more technical, but each class starts with a stretch and ends with smiles. Programs such as Dance Class and ArtSpace give parents a moment to take for themselves, before returning to see their child boast about the newest dance move they have learned or masterpiece they have created! Our program volunteers help run a wide range of activities for the entire family when they stay at RMH BC. “It’s different every time I’m here. On my second shift, I was readying one of the kitchens for a group and one of the girls staying at the House took my hand and told me that we were going to find Nemo. So, off we went to the fish tank.” Dewey volunteers every Thursday night as a Family Meal Host, where he helps provide a welcoming environment for families and assists the meal groups who make home-made meals for families staying at RMH BC. He loves the tight-knit group of volunteers around him, all of whom are willing to lend a hand when needed, such as in urgent fish-finding missions. #NVW2019 #keepingfamiliesclose #homeawayfromhome #volunteer #thankyou

“My fondest memory of RMH was when all my family and some of my friends came to visit me before I started by chemotherapy treatments,” Tristyn says. “We spent the whole day together at RMH and went shopping for delicious food and cooked a huge meal. I remember It being an amazing day and being so full I couldn’t even stand up!” Happy #NationalSiblingsDay to all the strong siblings who provide support to their sick brother or sister. At RMH BC, the Rangers were able to enjoy some much-needed time together over school breaks while Tristyn was undergoing chemotherapy. Time away from home can be hard, but the next best thing to being at home is having your siblings by your side. #keepingfamiliesclose #homeawayfromhome #siblings #family

“Being around people in the same scenario, at different stages of the same treatment is incredibly helpful” says Adam Ireton. “You can have a conversation without having to explain the whole thing.” RMH BC has allowed Weston, who is battling leukemia, to have one parent by his side at all times (and sometimes the whole family), as they find their new normal. The Iretons, who are constantly on the move, appreciate programs such as the Family Meals that help reduce stress so that they can focus on supporting Weston every step of the way. #familyfeaturefriday #feelgoodfriday #linkinbio #keepingfamiliesclose #homeawayfromhome

The relationship between music, anxiety and trauma is significant. March is #musictherapy Awareness Month and we would like to share Erin’s story as RMH BC’s music therapist.
