Felicien Kanyarugano is an amazing example of how our trackers form such close bonds with the gorillas they track. ⠀ ⠀ Felicien’s wife gave birth to a baby girl in 2001, the same day his favorite gorilla Pasika gave birth, because of this he and his wife named their baby daughter Mukapasika!⠀ ⠀ 📸: Veronica Vecillio⠀ ⠀ #worldrangerday #savingspecies #wildlifeconservation #dianfossey #endangeredspecies #conservation #rwanda #congo

Imagine a world without gorillas. It wasn’t that long ago -- just a few decades, in fact -- that these amazing animals were nearly wiped from this earth. ⠀ ⠀ Since Dian Fossey began her work in the 1960s, the tiny mountain gorilla population has stabilized and moved from "critically endangered" to "endangered." This is a HUGE step for a species that was once on the brink of #extinction. The mountain gorilla success story has been a culmination of many efforts, including Y-O-U. ⠀ ⠀ Nearly 13,000 people from around the world make our work possible every single day. Thank you. With your help, we're saving a species!⠀ ⠀ You can secure a future for these amazing animals by making a donation today: https://dfgfi.org/donatetoday

We couldn't do our education work without the help of our amazing interns! African Leadership University Intern, Josh, created and then trained fellow University of Rwanda(UR) interns, Laban, on how to lead students through an immersive education experience using our exhibit as a teaching tool. Elias, one of our new professional interns from UR also helped lead activities with the primary school students. Today we piloted the student geared tour with one of the nature clubs we work with around the park. Students learned all about gorillas, tried their hands at charades, and also got to take home a colored gorilla with them. Not a bad way to kick off a the week! #conservation #conservationeducation

Do gorillas show evidence of cultural traits? Further research is needed to fully answer this question, but some interesting data has been collected. Scientists have compared certain behaviors - seen as cultural traits - across 5 sites where gorillas are observed. After analyzing the data, they determined that there are indeed wide differences in the gorillas, behaviors that correlate to their geographic location! To learn more about this study and some of the “cultural traits” observed take a look at this article: https://dfgfi.org/culture⠀ ⠀ 📸: Jean Paul Hirwa

Meet Pablo’s group. It currently has 25 members, but at one point had a record number of 65 - the largest gorilla group ever recorded! This group has been lead by Pablo, legendary Cantsbee (who led for 20 years!), and is currently being led by 23-year-old silverback Gicurasi, Cantsbee’s son! Pablo’s group has an amazing history, and we’re excited to continue monitoring them every single day! ⠀ ⠀ You can keep up with Pablo’s group in our “Life of Pablo” series, featured in our quarterly Gorilla Journal. Mountain gorillas have been monitored and studied closely since Dian Fossey began her work with them in 1967, after establishing the Karisoke Research Center. Today, Fossey Fund trackers and researchers protect and study roughly half of all the mountain gorillas in Rwanda, with the other half protected by the Rwandan national park authorities. From decades of daily protection and your support, there are now 604 mountain gorillas living in the Virunga Mountains, up from an all-time low of 250!

🎉 Congratulations to our very own Maurice Ngiramahoro who graduated today with a Master’s in Science in Environmental and Development Studies! Thanks in part to our incredible network of donors, the Fossey Fund was able to provide financial support for Maurice's studies while he continued to work full-time as our Conservation Education Coordinator in Rwanda -- he is truly amazing! Training the next generation of African conservationists is a critical part of our mission, and last year 25% of our staff received financial support for higher education initiatives. Congratulations again, Maurice!🎓💛💚

One of the important tasks carried out each day by the Fossey Fund gorilla trackers is the search for and de-activation of snares set in the forest. Ever wondered exactly where it is that we work? We've got you! The Fossey Fund monitors and protects two separate populations of gorillas: mountain gorillas in Rwanda and Grauer's gorillas in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo. We also work directly with local communities in each country, as 50+ years of field work have taught us that for conservation to be sustainable, people must be thriving, too! #HelpingPeople #SavingGorillas

We love this photo of Grauer's gorillas Chimanuka and Marhale. This father-son duo live in Kahuzi Biega National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.⠀ ⠀ While our teams in the field study the gorillas at Kahuzi Biega, the population of Grauer's gorillas that we actually protect is found in a remote area north of the park, Nkuba, which isn't formally protected by the government. ⠀ ⠀ Grauer's gorillas remain #criticallyendangered and face ongoing threats such as mining, hunting, conflict, and other human activities. The Grauer's gorillas we protect in the DRC face different daily threats than their mountain gorilla cousins. With 1 million species at risk for #extinction due to human activities, #conservation can seem out of reach. But together, we can make an #impact. Because #mountaingorilla Poppy was monitored throughout her life, we have gained an extraordinary amount of #scientific knowledge from her, and her impact on our critical work cannot be overstated.⠀ ⠀ And though we are a scientific organization at heart, these #gorillas are individuals that our teams in the field see every day for many years and grow to care about deeply, just as Dian Fossey did after she first climbed Mt. #Karisimbi to find these beautiful creatures so many years ago.⠀ ⠀ Leave your #condolences, #memories, happy #gorilla stories, and #support for our field teams in the comments below. Environmental news has been grim lately, but there's still hope.
