Redefine masculinity. One of the ways you can take action to end rape culture is to take a critical look at what masculinity means to you and how you embody it. Self-reflection, community conversations, and artistic expression are just some of the tools available for men and boys (as well as women and girls) to examine and dismantle the culture of toxic masculinity with feminist principles. 🎨: @hannabarczyk Check out the link in bio to find out more ways to stand against rape culture. #orangetheworld #16days #GenerationEquality

There are an estimated 370 million indigenous people in the world, living across 90 countries. Join us in speaking up against all forms of discrimination! #WeAreIndigenous
Tarcila Rivera Zea is a Quechuan activist and a leader in the movement of indigenous women. She started speaking up for indigenous rights after going through a lifetime of discrimination and has been working as an activist for more than 30 years. "I was only eight years old when I had to leave my family in the quetchua community in Ayacucho, Peru, for the outskirts of Lima. I had managed to learn Spanish by myself, and my primary school teacher took me in to live with her family and to help with the chores in her home. I was not even allowed to sit at the table with them, or eat with the same cutlery, let alone receive visits from my school friends..." #WeAreIndigenous
The simple fact of being an indigenous woman or girl means that she is at least 3 times more likely to experience violence. Let’s not allow silence to be compliance. This #IndigenousDay, join us in speaking up for indigenous women’s rights! #WeAreIndigenous
Some inspiration from Rigoberta Menchú, K’iche’ human rights activist, for #IndigenousDay, marked every year on 9 August. “My Name is Rigoberta Menchú. I am 23 years old. This is my testimony. I didn’t learn it from a book and I didn’t learn it alone. I’d like to stress that it’s not only my life, it’s also the testimony of my people... My story is the story of all poor Guatemalans. My personal experience is the reality of a whole people.” These are the first words we hear from her in the book, ”I, Rigoberta Menchu” as she begins to tell her story of struggle, persistence, and activism that led her to become a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and an indigenous human rights defender who continues to lead the way to justice and equality for world’s indigenous peoples. #WeAreIndigenous

When she was 22 years old, Luiza Karimova left her home in Uzbekistan and travelled to Osh, Kyrgyzstan with the hopes of finding work. When a woman offered her a waitressing job in Bishkek, the capital city in the north of Kyrgyzstan, she welcomed the opportunity. But things took a turn for the worse after arriving in Bishkek. Karimova recalls that, “They held us in an apartment and took away our passports. They told us that we’d be photographed again for our new employment documents, to be registered as waitresses. It felt strange, but we believed them.” #EndHumanTrafficking . . . 📸 UN Women Europe and Central Asia/Rena Effendi

"Some day women will fly the Atlantic and think little of it because it is an ordinary thing to do," wrote Amelia Earhart, born #OnThisDay in 1897, after becoming the 1st woman and 9th person to fly the Atlantic. She did so as a passenger, alongside two male pilots and against all odds, gaining much fame, but for her there was "more to life than being a passenger." Later on, she crossed the Atlantic, flying solo, and then the Pacific, making her the 1st person to have flown solo across both oceans. She opened up the skies to women, and continues to be an inspiration to us all to be bold, and to never give up on our dreams. ✈️👩✈️

Since joining the Market Women’s Association, a network supported by UN Women, Christine has started growing her business. The Association has provided her with training on life skills and how to better manage her finances. “I use the income to pay school fees even though it’s very difficult; money is not enough,” she says. . But her family keeps her going. 💛 #FamiliesOfToday

It's a vicious cycle created by systemic barriers that sustain the gender pay gap in the sports world. Girls don't get as many opportunities as boys get to play male-dominated sports, face gender stereotypes that hold them back, and are marginalized when they become athletes in sports that have been traditionally associated with men's interests. As a result, there is less #WomenInSport in those disciplines, hence less competition in women's tournaments, hence less viewership. Finally, presuming lack of interest from the audience, media doesn't give enough visibility to women athletes, which means less sponsorship. Add these together and you get the gender pay gap. #FIFAWWC #DareToShine #EqualPay
The lack of women's stories in the news skews our perception of world. We want to hear more from women & about women, without gender role biases and expectations!
Did you know that with 184 goals, @abbywambach still holds the world record for goals scored at the international level by both women and men football players? Despite this fact, she got paid much less than any men who played at the same level as she did. There are 25.4 million refugees around the world today, and nearly half are women and girls. On #WorldRefugeeDay, we are honouring the resilience and determination of refugees worldwide. As women and girls are displaced, many protections and essential services break down, leaving them vulnerable to specific risks. For instance, they face heightened discrimination and violence at a time when support services are lacking and their burden of care work at home, such as providing food and water, and caring for the sick and the old, increase. Join us in standing #WithRefugees in their journey to safer futures. Let’s #StepWithRefugees to show our solidarity. 📷: UN Women/Ryan Brown

To get justice for conflict-related sexual violence, survivors need to report such cases, and to do so, they need to know that they wouldn’t face social exclusion and stigmatization after reporting. "We need to ensure that survivors receive the necessary support from their family and from the society," says prosecutor Hajdari. #EndRapeInWar
