We're giving back to make an impact! After-School All-Stars Orlando Chapter teamed up with @agiftforteaching to give back to their community by providing homeless children with over 1,000 backpacks filled with supplies for the start of the new school year! Orlando All-Star Natalia Perez was among the group that volunteered –– Perez said she's been receiving free school supplies since middle school because of the program and now wants to give back. With more than 13,000 homeless students in surrounding counties, these back-to-school supplies are sure to leave an impact when they are distributed to five different Orange County Public Schools and to the Boys & Girls Club in downtown Orlando. We could not be more impressed by the compassion and community-oriented mindset these amazing kids are leading with! Watch the video here: http://bit.ly/2KFV8NP
As our summer programs come to an end, we’re reflecting on some of the stand-out moments our All-Stars shared together over the past couple months –– and this “Learn to Sail” experience makes the top of the list! This summer, our Cleveland All-Stars at Woodhill Community Center gathered on the East 55th Marina Dock, zipped up their lifejackets, and set off to practice their sailing skills on Lake Erie. Included in the group of amazing coaches and captains from the Foundry Rowing and Sailing Center was Colin (pictured here). Before heading out on the water, Captain Colin had three simple but meaningful rules for these All-Stars: “respect the boat, respect Captain Colin, and respect each other.” Our All-Stars learned all things sailing –– including soft skills, like teamwork, leadership, and communication. On the days they weren’t sailing, the students were back at the Foundry Rowing and Sailing Center practicing their rowing skills. With Colin’s help, these All-Stars proved they have exactly what it takes to be successful on the water –– and they had a blast while doing it! Big THANK YOU to @startingpointohio for granting After-School All-Stars a pilot grant to bring this six-week summer program to our students. It’s been an unforgettable experience!
That’s a wrap on North Texas Summer Programs! 130 students enrolled in our seven-week summer school program at Thomas C. Marsh Preparatory Academy in North Texas, where our students had the opportunity to participate in healthy living programs, art, STEM, community service projects, high school academic readiness, and other project-based learning activities daily from 8am-5pm. A highlight of the summer was Mr. Joseph’s DJ Music Production class –– an immediate favorite among many. Did you know? After-School All-Stars North Texas chapter was established in 2013. That year, 87,000 students were served by After-School All-Stars. Today, we proudly serve 90,718 students –– and we’re still growing! Here at After-School All-Stars, we are teaching our students to lead, serve, and ADVOCATE –– and we don’t just tell them how it’s done, we SHOW them how it’s done! On Tuesday, June 25th, After-School All-Stars Washington DC Executive Director Daniela Grigioni spoke on an expert panel in the Dirksen Senate Building on Capitol Hill regarding out-of-school-time career and technical education (CTE) opportunities for middle-schoolers. Daniela, along with fellow practitioners, sector professionals and a current middle-school student, spoke about the importance of exposing middle-school-aged students to CTE, and how the reauthorized CTE law (Perkins V) enhances the ability for community-based organizations to fulfill this work. We are so proud of our DC team and all of our other team members across the country who are speaking up for after-school. You can join these activists and fight for the nearly two million children that depend on after-school programs by giving today: https://afterschoolallstars.org/give/donate/
It’s International Day of Friendship and after attending our All-Star Leadership University (ASLU) last month, Orlando All-Star Angelica has found a deeper meaning behind today. ASLU is a Youth Leadership Retreat where we bring together All-Star Student Leaders from across the United States to experience applying their strengths as leaders, build friendships, and make an impact in their community. Angelica says, “My first year at ASLU, I didn’t talk too much. I was new and it was nerve-wracking. But we made these envelopes with our names on them and posted them to the wall. At the end of the week, we got to write notes to each other and put them in the envelopes. One note said, ‘quiet but sweet!’ –– that experience made me feel like I was welcomed.” We couldn’t be prouder of Angelica and all of our other All-Stars that shared their voice ASLU, and now, take their voices back to their communities to implement a new service project! “The thing that changed me the most at ASLU was just meeting new people. I’m talkative now, but back then, like in elementary school, I wouldn’t really talk. In All-Stars, people come to ask how your day is, ask about your life, introduce you to other students…this really brought me out of my shell.” Happy #DayOfFriendship to all of those All-Star friendships made!
As Mr. Mendoza prepares for his team’s biggest dance performance of the year, he stands in awe at how far the program has come. He remembers when the Bell Gardens Intermediate Dance Team was made of 12 girls and one boy –– he can’t believe that there are now 114 girls and 36 boys enrolled in the program. This after-school dance program has even become an elective class during the school day! Mr. Mendoza works with each student to make sure they are placed in a position where they can grow in confidence and knowledge, whether it’s being a team caption, stage manager, or lighting technician. He states, “After-School All-Stars means the world to these students. It saved some from drugs, it’s saved some from gangs in our community, it’s taught students how to build self-esteem and to continue their education even further. Some of my students have even gone on to become professional dancers. All-Stars is a place for them to be safe, it’s a place for them to learn, and it’s a place for them to grow as people — to be kind to each other, to be educated, and to be something in life. That’s what All-Stars provides.”
Our 2019 summer programs have been quite a success and these photos from Memorial Middle School in Tampa, Florida sure show it! The theme this year is “Get S.M.Art” (Summer at Memorial with Art). Students are focusing on the ART of cooking, dancing, sports, and writing. The two most favored projects – according to students’ responses – are “The Dream House Project” and “How Art Speaks to Me”. “The Dream House Project” students are designing and will construct their homes using recycled materials. In the “How Art Speaks to Me” classroom, students work in collaborative groups in preparation to co-author narrative books. Be on the look-out for more pictures and quotes as we close out our summer projects!
All-Stars from all across the country arrived at the Santa Monica Pier ready to learn and explore the famous California landmark! After-School All-Stars partnered with @healthebay to equip our students to lead, serve, and advocate and to show our students the importance of advocating for important issues like plastic reduction and ocean conservation. Students explored Santa Monica Beach, learned about its storm drain and ecosystem, and helped clean up any lingering trash along the way. Additionally, our students wrote letters to the California State Assembly and California State Senate to pass legislation that would in fact reduce plastic waste and conserve our oceans. These two bills serve as a first step in addressing America’s trash and recycling problem and will hopefully serve as an example to states all across the U.S. Thank you to @healthebay for educating our students on how they can make a difference in their communities, their nation, and in the world. We know they will carry this information with them wherever they go and educate others along the way!
As our All-Stars made their way to the main auditorium, they could hear music playing in the distance. They opened the doors to hear the live musical stylings of @iamezinma aka “Classical Bae”, as she stood in the middle of the room passionately playing her violin. Students raced to get a closer look at Ezi’s performance. As soon as she finished playing her last note, the room exploded with applause and she greeted everyone with a warm smile. Ezi went on to share the story of how she fell in love with the violin from a very young age. Our students were amazed to hear she has worked with many well-known artists, including Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, and more. She shared her dreams and asked our students to share their dreams as well –– one student wants to own a café, another would like to become an actor, and another would like to simply give back to his community. When asked if she ever feels insecure, she said “Every day I feel like I am not good enough, not talented enough, I’m not whatever enough. Every day. But you know what? There’s always another day and you keep going no matter what. I also think the more doubts you have, the more it shows how big your dream really is. If I know I can do it, I know my dream isn’t big enough.” Our students left feeling inspired and ready to accomplish everything they set their minds to. Thank you @iamezinma for taking the time to not only speak with our students but to listen to them as well. We were all impacted by your story and will not forget your encouraging words. And thank you to our partner @essentiawater for making this experience possible for our students!
The doors opened and students rushed in to get the best seat in the house for the first day of After-School All-Stars Leadership University (ASLU). Over 75 of our Youth Advocacy Board members, students and mentors from across the nation gathered at Rieber Hall at the UCLA Campus to kick off an exciting week of learning how to work together to make a greater impact and change the world. Everyone was energetic and ready to get the week started! The house lights went off and “We Will Rock You” played over the speakers as students jumped to their feet to welcome our opening special guest. You could feel the excitement in the room as Patrick Mahomes appeared on stage and took the mic to greet students. Mahomes went on to share his personal story of how he has gotten where he is today. “One thing that I believe will always get you to where you want to be at is to put the hard work in, give the time, and go out there and be the best you can possibly be. Continue to be the overachievers you are already being.” We are so grateful to @patrickmahomes and @essentiawater for partnering with us to make this ASLU experience uplifting and rewarding for our students. Thank you for motivating our students to always move forward and never give up!
What an exciting day for our New York chapter! Baseball fans cheers roared through the Brooklyn Cyclones MCU ballpark today as After-School All-Stars students from our New York chapter made their way to the mound to make the first pitch. As part of its partnership with Minor League Baseball™ (MiLB™), @applegate teamed up with our New York chapter and hosted 30 After-School All-Stars students at its theme night –– an experience complete with many in-ballpark experiences for our kids. When asked what he enjoyed most, After-School All-Stars student, Amos said, “I loved doing kart wheels on the field!” Another student, Marckenny said, “I want to become an architect or engineer, but if I don’t do that, I’d play baseball.” Applegate and After-School All-Stars share a deep commitment to healthy lifestyles and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to work together. We’re so grateful for Applegate’s generosity and partnership –– they’ve worked to raise funds for ongoing programming, and they’ve created a memory for our students that they will certainly not forget!
The room fell instantly quiet as the audience heard the big question of the night – “Does anybody want to give $1 million in support of After-School All-Stars tonight?”. After a few more moments of silence, a paddle was raised in the distance and the room burst with cheers and applause as they saw Alex and Leila Hormozi walk up to the stage. No one had ever donated that much at the Arnold Schwarzenegger-Westime Charity Night before—this was truly record-breaking news! Our founder, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was so grateful for their generous donation and presented the couple with the Eagle Award. He shared, “This eagle represents the kids in After-School All-Stars who fly high, but can only fly high when they have people like you that create the wind that allows them to do so.” Thank you @hormozi and @leilanhormozi for your extraordinary generosity and commitment to seeing After-School All-Stars provide transformative life opportunities to low-income kids across the nation. We will never forget your gracious contribution!
Last week, forty of our Newark All-Stars walked into their afterschool music class and were greeted by world renowned jazz musician/composer/pianist and DJ, ELEW. Instead of their regularly scheduled music learning, our students were able to hear and see the world of music through the eyes and ears of ELEW that left them intrigued and inspired for more. He taught our students non-traditional ways to play the piano—almost like a harp! This technique is used in movie scenes and is also used by ELEW in his own compositions. The kids were captivated by his performance and they performed for him too! “I’m excited to work with After-School All-Stars kids in Newark because there’s this really cool connection kids have with imagination. What I do with the musical arts is something they can relate to and participate in with very energetic ideas or experiments,” ELEW said. “When I was a child, certain artists made powerful impressions upon me that shaped my life in a positive way. I’m so thrilled and honored to continue that process and be part of this legacy.” Thanks to ELEW and the Newport Jazz Festival for helping us create transformative opportunities for our kids in Newark. ASAS board members Tim Hepplewhite, Tish Johnson, and Dupre Kelly were also there—we see you and appreciate your support! We are grateful for experiences like this that help remove barriers to quality afterschool activities and provide equal opportunity for all students.
We raised a RECORD-BREAKING 5.3 million dollars at the 7th Annual Arnold Schwarzenegger x @westimewatches Charity Evening this Saturday! It was an electric night filled with several surprises and special moments—like a 1 million dollar pledge from Leila and Alex Hormozi of @gymlaunch ! We had a fantastic time with our friends and supporters whose overwhelmingly generous donations provide our nation’s youth with life-changing after-school programs—ranging from academic support to enrichment programs, college and career support, and leadership and civic engagement. Alumnus, Ti’ Andre Bellinger, shared a heart-warming and empowering message on his own personal journey with After-School All-Stars. And our Bell Gardens Intermediate Dance Team prepared an exceptional performance for our guests featuring @schwarzenegger’s rap. They were indeed the life of the party! We can’t thank our partners, donors, and friends enough for their incredible generosity and continued support! Because of you, we can provide our students with the tools they need to become change-makers and leaders.
Our partners are the reason we get to do what we do. Thank you to all our partners who make afterschool learning programs accessible for over 90,000 kids across the nation. We are so grateful for the continued growth you have given us and more importantly, our students. To support After-School All-Stars today, click the link in our bio!
Since its launch in 2017, T-Mobile’s Generation T program has inspired more than 5,800 students to explore careers in technology and product innovation. The program is a great educational tool for students, but it has also been a chance for them to break out of their everyday routines and simply have fun in a new learning environment. “T-Mobile has made me think about all my career options,” said one Generation T student, “and I now see T-Mobile as a jumping-off point for my future career.” This program is one out of the current 275 STEM programs After-School All-Stars is proud to host across the country and we’re only growing! We are so grateful for T-Mobile's partnership and for creating career paths through their Generation T Career Exploration experience for After-School All-Stars students.
After-School All-Stars Alumnus, Darryus, came into the program to play football but left with so much more. "I joined All-Stars to play football and they told me I had to get my grades up. It took me a while to get used to the discipline and get used to having to get good grades to play. But I slowly started to improve and over time I was able to develop better study habits." Our health and wellness programs equip thousands of students with the skills to develop healthy habits and make better choices at home, on the field, and beyond the classroom. #AfterschoolWorks
The dance team at Bell Gardens Intermediate closed out the year with a final performance titled “One More Light”, which showcased the skills and knowledge they learned throughout the year of being in the program. From stage management to choreography, these students poured all they had into the show—and it showed. The moving production sold out on both nights and the Montebello Unified School District Superintendent and Board of Education were in attendance! Dancer Bernice P. says, “This is more than just something to do after school. Dance by itself is making us free—it helps us express ourselves. When I began this program in sixth grade, I had some family problems and being with this team was the only place I felt like I could relate to others and could be myself. This program changed me.”
Ms. Melanie Cardona, a dance instructor at Alliance Kory Hunter Middle School in Los Angeles, shared "I think our program specifically brings a lot of fun and it’s a growing environment for them. I like getting to know them the most. I feel like I get to know them individually, and when you make connections with them I think that’s really awesome". Thank you to staff like Ms. Cardona for investing time in our students and helping them grow!
We asked ASAS Student, Natalie, about her experience with the program. She shared, "All-Stars brings people confidence—like they can do anything....whatever they want to accomplish." #DreamBig
Many of our students have positive, strong relationships with their ASAS mentors, like, Salma, our Los Angeles Youth Advisory Board Member. Salma, and her mentor, Laura, have a special bond that will go beyond Salma's middle school education. When we asked Salma about their relationship, she said, "she’s been one of my biggest mentors throughout my whole All-Stars experience. It’s helped me so much to have someone I can trust be there for me throughout the whole process."

We believe in educating our young leaders on the importance of giving back to their community. One of the ways our students give back to their community is through organizing student-led service projects across the country. Last week, our Los Angeles Youth Advisory Board Member, Salma, organized a service project encouraging participants to spread kindness. We spoke with Dayanara, an All-Star student who participated, on the importance of kindness—"kindness is important to me because I think it’s something we need and should share with everyone.” Remember, kindness doesn't cost anything and could really make someone's day! Be kind to others. 😊
Thank you to all the families who have entrusted us with their kids during after-school hours. We are honored to partner with you to create a safe learning environment for all of our students.
