#DidYouKnow💧Poor sanitation and hand washing practices are responsible for thousands of deaths globally each year. In this village in Gujarat, India 🇮🇳, the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat, supported by @discoverrb, is meeting with women and girls to discuss their sanitation challenges. Key messages 🗣 on safe sanitation and hygiene are shared, including through hand-washing demonstrations. These messages and techniques are then passed on to the broader community 🙂—ensuring everyone has the knowledge and means to avoid bad sanitation practices and stay healthy. #AKDN #Sanitation #Handwashing #Healthcare #WASH #Hygiene #India #Communities #QualityOfLife

❤️📖 A father reading with his young daughter in the remote Chipurson valley, high up in the mountains of northern Pakistan. Reading from an early age is fundamental preparation to a student's later progress through the education process. The Aga Khan Foundation's education work aims to address the teaching of reading and works with families and communities to ensure that children have more access to books. Research has demonstrated the many benefits of parents reading with their children from an early age. Being read to is one of the strongest predictors of academic success and why it is integral to AKF's education programmes. #AKDN #ReadingForChildren #Pakistan #reading #books #SchoolImprovementProgramme #QualityEducation #Family #Love #QualityOfLife

🎶 Happy #WorldMusicDay! @JaipurLitFest in 2017, AKDN brought together some incredibly talented artists from around the world as the @AgaKhanMusic Initiative (AKMI) Allstars to celebrate musical diversity. Above is @HomayounSakhi, an Afghan-born player of the Afghan Rubab, an instrument of which he is considered a master. AKMI is an interregional music and arts education programme with worldwide performance, outreach, mentoring, and artistic production activities. The Initiative was launched by His Highness the Aga Khan to support talented musicians and music educators working to preserve, transmit, and further develop their musical heritage in contemporary forms. Music is one of the most powerful ways that we can transcend cultural boundaries and find a space for shared empathy. That is why today we pay special homage to musicians from around the world and thank them for the joy their art brings to us all. ❤️ #AKDN #AgaKhanMusicIntiative #Diversity #Culture #Music #Musicians #WorldMusic

Can regional connectivity assist in reducing inequalities and creating opportunity? Afghanistan was once a thriving hub at the heart of the Silk Road, but decades of conflict and instability led to it becoming isolated from its neighbours and fuelled increasing poverty. Now AKDN, amongst others, is working on cross-border initiatives – clean energy lines, bridges and infrastructure, cross-border markets, and more – not only to help reinvigorate a once prosperous nation, but also its neighbours too. Today at the EU Development Days ( @europeaid) in Brussels leading experts come together to explore this topic, drawing from the soon to be launched report by @ChathamHouse_org, 'Reconnecting Afghanistan: Lessons from Cross-Border Engagement'. #AKDN #ReconnectingAfghanistan #Afghanistan #CrossBorder #RegionalConnectivity #Tajikistan #PamirEnergy #CrossBorderMarkets #BuildingBridges #Opportunity #DevelopmentGoals #QualityOfLife

"Before my father and mother weren't interested... Now they want me to go to school every day." In rural #Afghanistan, cultural constraints are just one of many barriers to #GirlsEducation. But without adequate schooling, many may end up in a continuing cycle of #poverty, unable to help their communities thrive and prosper. 📖 🙋💡 By working alongside parents and religious leaders, the Aga Khan Foundation aim to ensure that everyone enjoys the benefits of a well-educated society. Informed young women are better equipped to escape domestic violence, provide safer and healthier environments for their children, and take a lead in civic life. 👭 🎉 Find out more about the @DFID_UK–funded STAGES project here: http://bit.ly/2wZglM7 #GlobalGoals #EducationForAll #SDG4 #AKDN #qualityoflife

It depicts "several scenes comprising battling elephants, horses, angels from ancient Persian mythology, lions, dragons and men playing polo” (Tania Qureshi, WCLA). The confidence with which midwife Hidaya Haji Shehe traverses the maternity wards is inspiring. She had been a nurse for several years before taking a midwifery qualification at @AKUGlobal in 2009 through a scholarship scheme funded by @JnJGlobalHealth. 🏥 👶 Despite her experience, Hidaya believes the course offered her new perspectives on patient care. One of her main takeaways was the idea of allowing patients a choice of healthcare professional. This had not always been the case in her small practice, where patients generally were sent to whoever was available. "Patients are more likely to come in earlier with their problems...Before they would choose not to see any provider and delay treatment, sometimes with fatal consequences." Even a seemingly small change can yield amazing results. And thanks to the dedication of midwives like Hidaya, more women in Zanzibar's 🇹🇿 natal clinics are receiving even better care. Sunder Nursery has been picked by @TIME Magazine as one of the World’s 100 Best Places! In recent years, the Sunder Nursery has undergone regeneration and restoration work undertaken by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. The project aimed to enhance and showcase the ecological and built heritage of the 90-acre site. A nursery was originally established here in 1912 when the imperial Delhi complex was being planned for propagating and testing tree species from across India and overseas. An important aim for the development was to creatively combine monuments, forest and nursery functions within one interactive experience. The landscape master plan aimed to create a major landscape space of truly urban scale, deriving inspiration from the traditional Indian concept of congruency between nature, garden and utility coupled with environmental conservation. The nursery also provides a major new green space for public recreation. #Delhi #SunderNursery #restoration #regeneration #park #greenspace #Mughal #India #TIME #AKDN #qualityoflife
