I’ve been sharing some of these images in my stories and they’re quite a hit, if the quantity of puns they elicit is any mark of measurement. I’ve been working in Wyoming at this residency for almost three weeks. Looking out the window of my studio, snow is piled up thickly on everything, postcard-style. Throwback to a few weeks ago on the shores of the Salton Sea. An exercise and offering, murmurs that I hope capture the psychogeographic soul of a place. Such pieces (the “YOU HAD ME AT” texts) are offered as love letters to locations, strung together poetic fragments, lists comprising an encyclopedic attempt to explore a space while lovingly containing and cataloging it. . . . WIP for my NY show coming into focus. 🖤 . . An excerpt from a thing I wrote a while back: “The page stretches out. I’ve lit slender devotional candles. Also, the smoke of incense turns the air clotted and unctuous, thick enough it’s hard to breathe so I have to open a window in the kitchen. The paper I’m working on curls up at the edges, its deckled border gently rubbing and bumping against my knees as I draw. One of the things I love about text is its reflective, reflexive quality. I play a part in selecting, editing the content of the piece, but the individual closes the loop, completes the phrase, bringing their experience and context. . . I think mirrors are almost a better vehicle for text than drawings for this kind of thing, because the level of engagement is even more increased, literally in plain sight. . . Someone called these mirrors “self-doubt inducing,” which I like. A mirror invites gaze and self-reflection. I often return to the notion of the Lacanian mirror stage: a startle, a great reveal. Recognizing oneself as Thing. As The Thing. And for the rest of our lives we continue to grapple to understand ourselves equally as unique, sovereign consciousness, while deeply desiring to connect with the whole, to be part of something, of the tribe. To be seen. . . And of course everyone takes extra pause before a mirror. As selfie magnets they’re the stars at fairs and museums and shows. In the mirrors I made for @bellevueartsmuseum, the sandblasted patterns are aggressively messy or muddied. That gold gilt Versailles shimmer gets in the way. Design interferes with reflection. Design as destructive, its purpose equivocal. It obfuscates and eclipses one’s image of oneself, the view equally careening toward comprehension and self-obliteration... . . I took this Thursday, before the quintessential Seattle gloom set in at our noontime dusk. Wasn’t feeling amazing, but was feeling at home in my studio, surrounded by the ghosts of Freud and Charcot being subjugated and schooled by the ghosts of their lovely patients, where my pencils—little workhorses—disperse their pigment across landscapes and voids, where the fuqed up magic happens. My hair is a little on the gray-violet because it was sick with banding and my stylist/hair-healer was all over it (looks platinum perfection today thanks to @ritualalchemyhair). One of the things I’m grateful for this year: the chance to learn so much about the incredible Hilma af Klint, to see so many of her works. The fact most her studio portraits feel uncannily timeless, despite the turn of the century garb and the sepia cast, is indicative to me of how much she’s still very much with us, of us, somehow of this era. She gives me feels. And chills. . . . . #hilmaafklint #guggenheim #artiststudio #painter #arthistory

Happy holidays! Now that the seasonal consumerist bacchanalia has wrapped (unwrapped) and we’re moving toward the seasonal frenzy of nostalgic self-congratulatory recaps, best-of lists, and determined goal setting, I’m looking back at one of my favorite photos of 2018. Two of us had been traipsing around the cavernous, stately-institutional halls of PS1. When there, I always feel a little bit a kid at school—but a dream school. Everything a little in the shadows, topsy-turvy, like Walter Benjamin’s Institute Benjamenta. At PS1, the teachers have been let out and the rest of us given free reign, to explore nooks and corners once forbidden. And to our delight, the gaping rooms stripped of chalkboards and chairs have been replaced by some of the most surreal installations. Like Bruce Nauman’s show this year: . . Gargantuan lists scrawled in colored pencil offer a treatise on color theory and poetry. The Sex Ed classroom is stuffed full of diagrams of orgiastic biology rendered in sizzling neon. Instead of didactic teachings on things ontological, we’re placed in a room where hidden cameras tucked high, pointed at crazy angles fuck with our sense of being in time and space. Our bodies observed are split from our tactile experience. So delightfully wrong. Merely walking down a hall becomes an inescapable, maddening optical illusion that splits the self into crippling but giggle-making, selfie-inspiring Otherness. . . While wandering, we took a wrong turn and ended up in a stairwell with no exit—locked from the inside. The concrete passageway was a veritable chalkboard for tags and graffiti and drawings scrawled everywhere. . . I stopped to take a selfie and found myself confronted by this penis. It makes for a too-easy metaphor, about erasure and big white dicks in the institutional art world, or how the artists of the Lascaux cave drawings may have had more artistic merit than now. . . Anyway, it’s funny and I like the pout of my lips and its crudeness and the memories it invokes. Merry end of year, take care of yourself, and make art. . #moma #momaps1 #graffiti #brucenauman #contemporaryart #nyc #nycgraffiti #art

Another (gentler) word I love: palimpsest. . . For me it points to the many lives of a drawing. The layers of marks and erasures and more marks that amass over years across a single sheet of paper. Sometimes drawings are made straightforward from start to finish. But many comprise a soft tangle of past lives. Much from the previous drawings fade from memory with time, but I can peep the sharply traced edge of a letter or word that’s just a whisper now, beneath a snarl of newer marks. Some drawings might spend ten years in the studio, emerging from the flat files at intervals, worked and tucked away and reworked again later. Underneath the visible image are layered at least two or more other drawings—if not a ghosted letter, perhaps the faint traces of a figure sheathed in folds of knotted fabric, doused in gauzy crenelations and melted ruffles. This kind of reworking is never something intentionally set out to do. But it’s a process acquired after many years, to engage a piece that never quite made the cut, never quite arrived. Until it does. With these pieces, reworking one to death or life is a habit, one tool of many picked up along the way. I can’t tell if the habit is nasty or inspired or thrifty or obsessive or what. . . But doing this—so much handling over the years—endows the page with a little give, a suppleness of leather or fabric almost. Almost. . . The whole process is too pregnant with metaphor, but I like it. ... #contemporaryart #process #wip#art#contemporarydrawing #palimpsest

I love the power of the F Word. I love its aggression and energy and vitality. Everything is amplified by it. Is there a word more powerful than it? Someone recently commented, saying my work reminds them of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper”. I do think of her and the protagonist of the story when making these drawings. I think of this woman locked up in an ivory tower. A troubled and complicated tower: a place of her own making, yet not—she was a person of much privilege, but also was prescribed a torturous treatment, forbidden to give utterance to her pain, or indulge in creative expression, or make any expression at all really. Gagged. She is symbolic of ongoing systemic abuses of power, and also of the evolving, determined mind, which expands beyonds constraints. Almost 130 years after it was penned, there’s a reason we still read this story in school. . . . #drawing #contemporaryart #art #wallpaper #interiordesign #words #artiststudio #wip #process #winstonwachter #breathe #women

View from the Seattle gallery, a piece to mark the longest night of the year: "To Sin When The Sun Goes Down” is a phrase I hobbled together inspired by the poems of Dagny Juel. She’s not very well known, but she was rather incredible. A fiercely wild spirit, a poet manqué, bohemian to the hilt. A Norwegian poet, a muse to artists such as Munch and Strindberg (when the female muse was a tool de rigueur for men of inadequate vision or inspiration I suppose). Quoth wikipedia, she was "famous for her liaisons with various prominent artists, and for the dramatic circumstances of her death.” She was in fact shot to death by an anarchist in 1901 at the age of 33, but not before living a life of light, shadows, and much intensity. @winstonwachter . . . #mirror #textbasedart #wordbasedart #mirrorart #contemporaryart #glass #glassart #glassartist #instaart #art #artist #artcollector #dagnyjuel #poet #sin #seattle #seattleartist #seattleart

One of my current projects: new glass pieces for the upcoming biennial at @bellevueartsmuseum. This is so new and different for me! Here’s a snapshot of my first prototype of a glass drawing (the ones in the museum will be a bit different). The glass is sandblasted in the manner of a vitreograph print plate to create an embossed surface, then backed with a mirror finish.
