Photo by @amivitale. Happy World Lion Day! After years of civil war in Mozambique, lions were all but lost in the Zambezi Delta region. The ambitious introduction of 24 lions from South Africa in 2018 was the largest international translocation ever undertaken. It is estimated that that the population could grow to as many as 500 within 15 years, restoring the apex predator to its native lands. Already, twenty cubs have been born since the lions’ release. It's amazing to see how resilient nature is when we give it a chance. I covered this historic undertaking for my recent @natgeo story. More than 800 elephants spend significant time at @loisaba_conservancy and @nature_africa is working with partners to conserve this important elephant migratory pathway. Elephants are excellent swimmers and if faced with a strong current, they use their trunk as a snorkel and then march right across rivers 12 feet deep. Long ago people thought that ancestral elephants may have come out of the seas. A popular myth was that their trunk evolved as a sort of snorkel in more aquatic settings. Their trunks are comprised of over 44,000 muscles and used for eating, drinking, as snorkels and for reassuring other elephants. These sentient giants are nature’s greatest engineers. Achian's dedication and hard work remain unparalleled. For 13 years, he has protected hundreds of endangered wildlife, ensuring that they have a chance at survival. In fact, his father was also a ranger on @lewa_wildlife, like a number of other rangers there. Achian and his colleagues at @lewa_wildlife continue to give hope and an optimistic outlook for endangered wildlife across Africa. They have successfully protected critically endangered rhinos from poaching for over 6 years, and no elephant has ever been poached on @Lewa_wildlife. They have ensured that their wildlife has a safe home by working closely with their neighboring communities, investing in technology, collaborating with other conservation organizations and doing their work passionately. Female giraffes give birth standing up and newborns are welcomed to the world with an almost five foot drop to the ground! However, within 30 minutes they are standing, and only hours later they are able to run with their mothers. At one point, the range of West African giraffe stretched across the Sahel, from Nigeria to Senegal. Illegal hunting, climate change and habitat loss all contributed to the population's decline, and by the mid-90's, only 49 remained, in this zone. Today, while still highly threatened, thanks to heroic conservation efforts, they number 600. In December, in order to help the longterm survival prospects of this subspecies, the Nigerien government with help from a team from the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (@giraffe_conservation) and Sahara Conservation Fund worked together to translocate eight giraffe from the Giraffe Zone to the Niger's Gadabedji Biosphere Reserve. Photo by @amivitale | A reticulated giraffe towers above the shrubbery at @loisaba_conservancy in Laikipia, northern Kenya. One of the theories put forward as to why giraffe have such long necks is that it gives them an advantage in securing nutrients. They can reach leaves that no other animals can. Others posit that the long necks are a result of sexual selection since male giraffes battle with their necks to win mates. Most recently, scientists have hypothesized that the long necks are to help fight the African heat. The greater surface area allows more heat can escape. Whichever it may be, these fascinating creatures are in trouble. Their numbers have fallen 30 percent in three decades, plummeting from approximately 155,000 in the late 1980s to about 110,000 today. For almost 50 years, the highly threatened West African giraffe has lived only in this region. Illegal hunting, climate change and habitat loss have all contributed to the population's decline. An ambitious plan to create a satellite population of the highly endangered West African giraffe was undertaken by the Nigerien government with help by a team from the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (@giraffe_conservation) and Sahara Conservation Fund. Photo by @amivitale. A reticulated giraffe browses at Sarara Camp ( @sararacamp) in northern Kenya. Because their necks are so long, reticulated giraffes must splay their legs in order to reach the leaves or water sources on the ground. A variety of hypothesis exist for why giraffe necks are so long. Some say it is to reach high food sources, others say the long neck is the result of sexual selection, and still others hypothesize that these long necks allow them to better cool themselves under the hot, African sun. No matter which it is, giraffe are, sadly in trouble. Giraffe populations have dropped nearly 40 percent in three decades and reticulated giraffe number fewer than 16,000. It is easy to see why this species is called the reticulated giraffe, with its brown-orange patches clearly defined by a network of thick and striking white lines.
