What were you doing three years ago?? Three years ago today we were in Berlin for the opening of our exhibition at Camera Work Gallery. It was an amazing, holistic approach overview our work, showing many different projects, including On the Set of James Bond's Spectre, Manga Dreams, Abstraction, Gymnasts - NDGT, Athletes, Nudes and Architecture. The gallery created a wonderful and beautiful display, and it was wonderful to see such a reaction to so many of our works, with all their different styles. This was the most holistic and comprehensive exhibition of our work that has ever been created. It was wonderful to see this gallery's belief in so many different and varied projects! Everything associated with that #beautifulexhibition remains a truly #specialmemory. We will always be grateful for this - it was such a beautiful experience. Some of these works will also be on display as part of the exhibition “Anderson & Low – Voyages and Discoveries” at George Eastman Museum from 18 October. #thirdanniversary #JamesBond #jamesbondspectre #Spectre #spectre007 #007 #007set #MangaDreams #fantasyandreality #gymnasts #danishgymnasts #ndgt #nationaldanishgymnasticteam #athletes #architecture #abstraction #nudes #platinumprint #housesofparliment #cameraworkgallery #cameraworkberlin #cwcgallery #berlinexhibition #berlingallery #eastmanmuseum #georgeeastmanmuseum #GEMvoyagesanddiscoveries #andersonandlow

“How did you make Chrysalis??" We get asked that question, a lot, so we thought we would post something about its origins. The Chrysalis images all come from a reworking of this series, called Abstraction. These images are derived from real #architecturalstructures, but are not #architecturalphotography in the normal sense. They are more like architectural imaginings, aspirations, ephemera. They are an extension of our previous architectural works, further emphasising a highly subjective approach. The study of form & detail is taken beyond the normal, reducing these images to a series of #abstractideas, almost like #mathematicalequations. This process is taken to an extreme, almost philosophical level; the term abstraction is therefore doubly appropriate as the word implies not only abstract shapes in the visual arts, but also the forming of general ideas and extrapolations from concrete examples - the process of developing concepts from experience. In these images, as #EllsworthKelly said, "The negative is just as important as the positive". It is the balance of these elements that is underpins the compositional ideas for this series. Works have been acquired by the #MuseumofFineArts, Houston. Some pieces from Abstraction will be in our forthcoming exhibition #VOYAGESANDDISCOVERIES at George #EastmanMuseum, Rochester, NY (‪‪18 Oct 2019- 5 Jan 2020‬‬). #RobertMotherwell said that "One of the most striking of abstract art's appearances is her nakedness, an art stripped bare." “Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot see physically with his eyes....Abstract art enables the artist to perceive beyond the tangible, to extract the infinite out of the finite. It is the emancipation of the mind. It is an exploration into unknown areas.” #ArshileGorky #abstractphotography #abstractform #abstractart #geometricabstraction #abstraction #abstract_worldart #photographicconstruction #negativespace #mfahouston #MFAH #ellsworthkellygroupies #abstractartorg #artesabstratas #loveabstractart #abstract__worldart #Blueriderart #throckmortonfineart #arthurrogergallery #andersonandlow #GEMvoyagesanddiscoveries

Continuing the thread of #alvinlangdoncoburn's amazing #vortographs, we are posting these images, showing how we took our own abstract works and reimagined and reassembled them into our project #Chrysalis. Some pieces from Chrysalis will be in our forthcoming exhibition #VOYAGESANDDISCOVERIES at George #EastmanMuseum, Rochester, NY (‪‪18 Oct 2019- 5 Jan 2020‬‬). We created new shapes, forms, and universes, often with geometrcic elements, assembling them into a whole new colour universes from their black & white origins. Works have been acquired and exhibited by  #VictoriaAndAlbertMuseum, #MuseumofFineArts, Houston, #AkronArtMuseum, Ohio, #SoutheastPhotographyMuseum, Florida, #WhiteheadInstitute, #MIT. #Vortograph #colourimage #kaleidoscope #geometry #flyinginthelightofdusk #danicinginmyhead #nostalgia #dreamofanarchitect #icestorm #belladonna #vamuseum #mfahouston #kaleidoscope #kaleidoscopicphtography #chrysalis #abstraction #voyageofdiscovery #newuniverse #GEMVoyagesanddiscoveries #andersonandlow

"My aim in photography is always to convey a mood and not to impart local information." Alvin Langdon Coburn 1882-1966 Thinking further about viewing the world through #neweyes in relation to our forthcoming exhibition #VOYAGESANDDISCOVERIES at George #EastmanMuseum, Rochester, NY (‪18 Oct 2019- 5 Jan 2020‬): While researching and curating in the museum's amazing collection, it was a delight to spent time considering the amazing and very wide-ranging works of Alvin Langdon Coburn. Not only did this great artist create some extraordinary and haunting portraiture in a traditional pictorial manner, he was also a hugely adventurous photographer, experimenting with abstraction by using special lenses to create fractured, overlapping multiple images of a subject, which he named vortographs, after the Vorticist movement. Vorticism was a wonderfully vigorous and impetuous multi-disciplinary 20th art movement. It referred to the spontaneous emotional power, like a storm or a vortex, with which its practitioners expressed themselves in art. It was primarily British art form, but had followers in other countries too, and was also influenced by the avant-garde in both Western Europe and Russia. Exponents included Wyndham Lewis, Jacob Epstein and Gaudier Brzeska. Coburn used this for still life shots and also for portraiture, with mesmerising results that are one of the foundations stones for modernist photography, and the photographic avant-garde: in these images the objects and people became geometric, kaleidoscopic, and the original structure virtually disappeared. The images remind us of how we transformed our series Abstraction into the new works of our series Chrysalis - at times the original structure disappeared, being subsumed into the new forms we created. #alvinlangdoncoburn #blackandwhitephotography #experimentalphotography #portaitphotography #vintagephotograph #abstractphotography #experimentalportrait #vortograph #abstractphotograph #modernism #modernistphotography #vorticism #wyndhamlewis #tseliot #gaduierbrzeska #kaleidoscope #kaleidoscopicphtography #chrysalis #abstraction #voyageofdiscovery #neweyes #GEMVoyagesandDiscoveries #andersonandlow

WHAT A JOY to visit Wells Cathedral! Not only is it one of the most beautiful early English Gothic style cathedrals, but it is also a place close to our hearts because of its photographic importance. In 1903 Frederick Evans photographed the stone steps leading up to the Chapter House - a seminal image he titled "A Sea of Steps". Truly classic and timeless, it predates Modernism & the Photo-Secession (it was constantly championed by Stieglitz in his Camera Work magazine as a result). Evans looked at the world in a different way, helped to change the way people see structure, photographic composition & tonal planes within an image. Visiting these steps is something special for anybody who loves photographic history & lineage. How magical, so moving to merge such a strong, beautiful visual memory with the utter beauty & wonder of experiencing this place for oneself. “Sea of Steps”will be in our exhibition in "ANDERSON & LOW - VOYAGES AND DISCOVERIES" at George Eastman Museum, Rochester, New York, from October 2019 to 5th January 2020. Additional works from the museum’s collection will illustrate ideas that are shared with our Voyages project: - Sharpening your senses, seeing the world differently, discovering magic in unusual ways as a result. - Blurring the lines between fantasy & reality in the search for a greater truth. - Pushing the expectations of what a photograph is “supposed to do”. The Chapter House is incredible, with its geometric, dizzying ceiling fanning out above. A perfect reminder of the Gothic love of interlocking patterns and designs, which echoes pre-Christian designs, modernism, geometric abstraction, & our Chrysalis series (which will also be in the exhibition). #wellscathedral #architecture #architecturelovers #architecturephotography #vaultedceiling #decorated #gothicarchitecture #geometricarchitecture #religiousarchitecture #architecturalinteriors #stonestairs #seaofsteps #frederickevans #stieglitz #camerawork #platinumprint #modernism #photosecession #chapterhouse #fanvaulting #geometricdesign #geometricabstraction #chrysalis #eastmanmuseum #GEMVoyagesandDiscoveries #andersonandlow

What a wonderful evening!!! Thank you so much to the #britishmuseum for inviting us to the opening reception for the brilliant #manga exhibition! The exhibition is the largest outside Japan, and is filled with so many wonders. From the earliest manga works by #hokusai and #kuniyoshi, to more recent favourites like #dragonball, #pokemon, #naruto, and #akira.  There is the incredible, massive Shintomiza Kabuki Theatre Curtain You can even dress up as pikachu!  Earlier classics such as they mighty #astroboy, and #gegegenokitaro are also represented. There is even a manga set in the British Museum! And it was wonderful to see such positive representation of paralympic sports in some of the comics. There were so many references that we recognised, and so many inspirations for our Manga Dreams project. And we got to appear in manga-style self-portraits too...

An inspiring and invigorating exhibition of #paintings by the late, great Zao Wou-Ki at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris #ZaoWouKi was born in China, and later lived in the USA, France and Switzerland. He developed his own unique styles of using oil paint, Chinese ink, and made numerous etchings as well. First influenced by #PaulKlee, he later also became interested in #Picasso, #Cezanne, #Matisse, #Miro, and by the #artisticfreedom of #AbstractExpressionism. Synthesising these influences together, and combining them with an understanding of traditional #chinesepainting became a springboard for him to launch into a series of #stylisticprogressions that were all his own - never wholly abstract, often retaining very strong allusions to #landscapepainting and other disciplines. Zao was associated with #avantgarde composers such as #EdgarVarese, #Boulez and #Stockhausen, and was friends with the great architect #IMPei. His paintings are filled with emotional depth: Some are incredibly uplifting, others are truly heart-breaking. He put his whole life and energy into his art. It’s a magical experience to see so many works from different periods of his life together in one place! The utter brilliance of these works is overwhelming. (And how often do you see a work of art that is an homage to #Varese??? 😊) #museedelartmoderne #ChineseArtist #abstractart oilpainting #inkonpaper #chinesecalligraphy #20thcenturyart #parismuseums #parisexhibitions #modernart #avantgardemusic #experimentalmusic #andersonandlow

Another inspirational visit to the #nicholasroerichmuseum in #newyorkcity! Roerich was born in Russia in the late nineteenth century and was very well known in the arts circles there. He worked with #Diaghalev’s #BalletsRusses, and created the original #costumedesigns and #setdesings for #princeigor and for #stravinsky’s riot-provoking ballet the #riteofspring. Later, after he left Russia, he worked on an #internationaltreaty for the protection of works of art during conflicts. He was a pioneer in protecting cultural property. His name appeared on the long list for the #nobelpeaceprize several times. Eventually he settled in a hillside home near #kullu in #northernindia, where he lived his remaining years, using the surrounding mountains and valleys as a constant source of inspiration for his paintings. He hosted #Nehru and #IndiraGandhi there, along with many others. We have loved his works for years, and have encouraged very many to visit the #RoerichMuseum in Manhattan – most New Yorkers have never even heard of it! – ever since we first went there in 1991. #nicholasroerich #Roerich #paxcultura #russiansymbolism #mysticism #mysticalpainting #russianart #russianartist #twentiethcenturyart #newyorkmuseums #20thcenturyart #tempera #nylandmarks

Continuing the theme of women’s rights and equality, after our posting about Billie Jean King  it was a profound moment to visit the grave of Susan B Anthony. This great human being campaigned tirelessly for women in America to have the right to vote in elections. She was arrested for her efforts, and although she never was able to vote , it is impossible to imagine female suffrage in America without her strenuous efforts, courage and humanity. In 2016 Billie Jean was honoured as the invited speaker at the annual Susan B Anthony birthday lunch and addressed to a packed and enthusiastic audience in the #susanbanthonyhouse. #Happybirthday #BillieJeanKing!!! The New York Historical Society currently has a special exhibition to celebrate the 75th Birthday of this great heroine: “Billie Jean King: The Road to 75” at the #NewYorkHistoricalSociety opened lasts until 27th January 2019. Among the many historic press photos of great sports victories in the exhibition, and details of her fight for equality, you can also find our special #portrait of her that we created as part of our project Champions. Thank you to the #PalmSpringsArtMuseum for loaning the print to the #NYHS. We are so proud and honoured to have this work included in this exhibition. Billie Jean is one of the greatest tennis players of all time, a true pioneer of women’s rights, an inspiration to millions, a defender of human rights, and - very importantly - one of the loveliest people we know. Her battle for equal prize money for #femaletennisplayers was a seminal moment in the fight for equality for women in general, not only in sport: At the time she was subjected to terrible venom and abuse, but she rose above it all. And simply by being the best, and by being dignified, she won her war. There is now equal prize money in all four grand slam events, and it is largely due to her. But this is only a part of her wonderful legacy and promotion of equality, which goes far beyond tennis. As #nelsonmandela said, “Sport can change the world” ! We created this portrait of #BJK as part of our project #Champions to benefit the #EltonJohnAIDSFoundation, which has done so much good work around the world. The print was first exhibited in the #Nationalportraitgallery in London, and prints are now in the Victoria & Albert Museum, The National Gallery of Australia, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Palm Springs Art Museum. The reason we visited #thejewishmuseum was to see the amazing exhibition “Chagall, Lissitzky, Malevich: The Russian Avant-Garde in Vitepsk, 1918-1922". This exhibition showcased so many treasures by all three artists, as well as by so many others who are less well known such as Ivan Puni and David Yakerson. Centered around the The People’s Arts School, from when Chagall was #FineArtsCommissioner for the region (appointed exactly 100 years ago this year) and had invited Lissitsky to teach #printing, #graphicdesign and #architecture, and Malevich to teach #arttheory. This exhibition is filled with extraordinary #arttreasures and #brillantdesign. It was originally a #publicsulpture in Brooklyn – facing #Manhattan it read Oy but facing #Brooklyn it read Yo but is now part of the museum’s #permanentcollection. We thought it was the such a brilliant observation of #NYC’s large #jewishcommunity, showing both where this population resides and also commenting on the community’s roots, and also linking #streettalk and #yiddish, creating #harmony and #dialogue between the Jewish community and other communities in the city. #Oy #Yo #OYYO #contemporarysculpture #newyorkmuseum #jewishmuseum #goingbacktomyroots @thejewishmuseum

The most sobering and profoundly disturbing part of the #nationalcivilrightsmuseum in #memphistennessee, is towards the end of the tour in the second building: you suddenly realise that, having stood looking out from inside the #lorrainemotel at the balcony where #martinlutherkingjr was shot dead, you are now looking through the window from which where James Earl Ray looked out when he shot MLK dead in an act of senseless violence. The feelings this evokes, of an overwhelmingly terrible moment with such awful repercussions that still reverberate today, are beyond words. It is at once terrifying and fills one with profound sadness… #ncrmuseum #civilrightsactivist #lorrainemotelmemphis  #martinlutherking #lorrainemotelroom306 #50thanniversary #neverforget #civilrightsmovement #nonvoilence#alllivesmatter #chooselove #loveconquershate #freedomforward #civilrights #humanrights #50thanniversary #april4th1968 @ncrmuseum

Anyone going to #memphistennessee should spend time in the #nationalcivilrightsmuseum. The museum is in a complex of buildings that includes the former #lorrainemotel, where the great #martinlutherkingjr was assassinated, 50 years ago this year. Here one can learn not only the history of the #civilrightsmovement and #nonvoilence, but also the abhorrent history of #slavery and its relation to American wealth, and the subsequent #jimcrow laws that continued to stigmatise, victimise and marginalise black Americans until finally being overturned in the second half of the 20th Century. This place is moving and profound, and makes one weep #bittertears. Any moral person is sure be profoundly moved. And it is important - particularly in times of division and intolerance and hatred of “difference” - to see the lessons that it teaches us about the need understand those who seem different, and not allow groups of people to be simply thought of in terms of their colour or creed, rather than as individuals. It also reminds one the constant need to put humanity before profit, and not allow humanity, #humanrights and #civilrights to be sept aside. This year is the 50th anniversary of that terrible shooting. The entire complex, including this motel, pays tribute to the legacy of this great man. The history of the motel before that time is amazing: before that terrible morning #April4th1968,  This was one of the few African American-owned, African American-run motels where African American guests were welcomed. It became associated with #staxrecords and guests included #raycharles #lionelhampton, #arethafranklin, #otisredding, the #staplesingers and #wilsonpickett. #ncrmuseum #civilrightsactivist #lorrainemotelmemphis  #50thanniversary #neverforget #alllivesmatter #chooselove #loveconquershate #freedomforward #martinlutherking #andersonandlow @ncrmuseum

It’s hard to explain what it feels like to walk into #SunStudios in #Memphis... The legacy of this humble, three-room (including the reception area) building is staggering. Originally set up by #SamPhillips, primarily to record blues musicians, this tiny enterprise - the #MemphisRecordingService - changed the sound of music beyond recognition, and changed youth culture worldwide at the same time. Blues geniuses including #HowlinWolf, #JuniorParker, #LittleMilton, #BBKing and #RufusThomas recorded here in the early 1950s. #JackieBrenston and the #DeltaCats recorded "#Rocket88" there in 1951. It truly is the #birthplaceofrockandroll!!! And then, there were the #musicallegends including #elvis, #carlperkins, #johnnycash, #jerryleelewis and #royorbison, to name but a few... One of the most #beautifulbuildings in #Stlouis is the marvellous, magical #stlouisabbey. For Global #JamesBondDay, we are posting three images from our project “On the Set of James Bond’s Spectre”: We were invited to create a special art project around the making of the #JamesBond film, #Spectre. Shot entirely at Pinewood Studios, this project focuses on the extraordinary, gargantuan and detailed sets created for the film. The sets, photographed completely devoid of people, are revealed in their magnificence, their obsessive detail, their vast scale and ultimately their #falsehood: the level of artifice is highlighted, colliding directly with the harsh reality of the bare sound-stages at #PinewoodStudios which impinge on the imagery, deliberately destroying the artifice and undermining the illusion. Like our projects #Chrysalis, #MangaDreams and #Voyages, this project stretches the boundaries between fantasy & reality, asking the questions “What am I really looking at? What is real, what is fiction?” Five prints from this project were released and auctioned by @phillipsauction. The remainder of the project was premiered in an exhibition at #CameraWorkGallery Berlin in June 2016, to coincide with the publication of our monograph book “On the Set of James Bond's Spectre”, published by #HatjeCantz. The text for the book is by #sammendes and #scottbukatman. Work from this series was acquired by the #MuseumofFineArts, Houston. #photography #andersonandlow #pushingtheboundaries #filmset #fantasyversusreality #factorfiction #hatjecantzverlag #jamesbondmovies #007 #redcarpet #opening #premiere #007channel #opening #instantjamesbond #MFAHouston #andersonandlow @Blueriderart @cameraworkgallery @throckmortonfineart @arthurrogergallery @MFAHouston @hatjecantzverlag

The #newexhibition #thesun at the #sciencemuseum is quite possibly the #bestdesign for a #scienceexhibition we have seen. An amazingly profound and moving piece of #storytelling, mixing #science, #art, history, archeology and #inspiration. One of the unusual parts of the exhibition details our relationship with #ourstar for recreation and restorative, health-related reasons. As a part of this, in the middle of the exhibition, the #designers and #curators have created an #artificialbeach, complete with #deckchairs and metal #palmtrees. Sitting in the chairs is a strange, surreal experience, suitable for a slightly #dystopian #sciencefiction movie. The exhibition is so expertly curated by Dr Harry Cliff, whose passion and knowledge are truly powerful. Everything from ancient Babylonian tablets and Portable sundials to nuclear power and Film of #solarflares included! Congratulations to the designer, @_samjacob for one of the most inventive, sensitive and clever #exhibitiondesigns that we have seen. And kudos to @khibbs (who also designed our #Voyages exhibition at the Science Museum in 2017) for choosing him. The whole experience is a brilliant way to understand more about our relationship to our very own star! #artandscience #beautifuldesign #youaremysunshine #understandingscience#understandingtheuniverse #oursolarsystem #samjacobstudio #khibbs #andersonandlow @sciencemuseum

We are thrilled that our portrait of the legendary Billie Jean King is going on display at the #NewYorkHistoricalSociety, as part of a special exhibition to celebrate the 75th Birthday of this iconic, inspiring woman: “Billie Jean King: The Road to 75” will open on 19th October until 27th January 2019. Thank you to the #PalmSpringsArtMuseum for loaning the print to the #NYHS. Billie Jean is one of the greatest tennis players of all time, a true pioneer of women’s rights, and inspiration to millions, defender of human rights, a true fighter for equality, and one of the loveliest people we know. Her battle for equal prize money for #femaletennisplayers was a seminal moment in the fight for equality for women in general, not only in sport, and at the time she was subject to a lot of venom and abuse. She rose above it all, and by being the best and by being dignified she won her war. There is now equal prize money in all four grand slam events is her wonderful legacy, which goes far beyond tennis. As #nelsonmandela said, “Sport can change the world” ! We created this portrait of #BJK as part of our project #Champions to benefit the #EltonJohnAIDSFoundation. It was first exhibited in the #Nationalportraitgallery in London, and prints are now in the Victoria & Albert Museum, The National Gallery of Australia, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Palm Springs Art Museum. An amazing Sikh Temple, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in #Delhi! The temple itself is spectacular (one cannot photograph inside), and the exterior grounds are famous for the spectacular #Sarovar (holy pond), surrounded by beautiful #coveredwalkways, corridors and alcoves. This #Gurudwara is highly revered in the Sikh religion, and is linked to the #GuruHarKrishan. The complex also houses a #secondaryschool, a Museum, a library and a hospital. But perhaps the thing that we will remember most is the jaw-dropping site of the massive #kitchen, where every day of the year gargantuan amounts of food are prepared and served for free to anyone who wants it. Every day, thousands of people are fed here. On #holydays, over one hundred thousand people receive meals! Staffed almost entirely by volunteers (and absolutely anyone can volunteer), the scale of cooking simply has to be seen to be believed. Next door is the room where thousands sit take turns to receive these meals. The food smells so wonderful (although we did not sit down to eat there owing to time pressures). Who says there is #nosuchthingasafreelunch!?!? With #cookingpots large enough to sleep in, and giant furnaces to cook with, it is an extraordinary – if sweltering – experience to walk through here! #Sikhreligion #Sikh #BanglaSahib #GurubwaraBanglaSahib #holysites #religioussites #volunteercooks #volunteercooking #cookingvolunteers #thereissuchathingasafreelunch #freelunch #feedingthemasses #foodforall #placesofinterest #unusualexperiences #amazingadventures #indianculture #andersonandlow
