This summer I spent a lot of time thinking about visual storytelling, romance and Barry Jenkins, who is making the films that make me feel the most. I love the work of @mickalenethomas and am overjoyed she took Barry’s photo for this profile. I’ve also stalked the stylist @shionat on these IG streets for some time now, you should too. The link is in my bio, the @nytmag culture issue will be in Sunday’s paper. 💫✨
This summer I honeymooned, girlfriended, and stepped into the full glory of my large forehead with short hair. What a perfect season.
I wrote my first children’s story for the @kazoomagazine fall action issue. Getting my copy in the mail and seeing the gorgeous illustrations by María Tuti prompted me to feel a rush of unexpected joy. (Look at their hair!) The story’s about a younger sister who, after a trip to Detroit’s Belle Isle, decides to start her own garden at home. You can get the issue (which also features a Q&A with the legendary chef and activist Leah Chase and tons of cool activities) at Barnes and Noble starting 9/1, or by subscribing to @kazoomagazine today.
I taught a course on fiction and memory to NY public school teachers this week and they were hands-down the best group I’ve ever worked with. So hardworking, thoughtful and engaged. 🍎🍎🍎 for everyone! #cullmancenter
Me and Sam Chang co-taught a workshop and I tried to act like it was no big deal. Then Sam gave a graduation speech about uncertainty post-MFA and how the writing itself will see you through and I thought about my own uncertainty 7 years ago when she was my teacher and I didn’t cry cause I’m a thug but I did get misty. So much gratitude.
Congrats to the recipients of the Glendora Dunbar fellowship (named for my late grandmother) and all the other 2018 Jack Jones Literary Arts Retreat fellows! Salute to Kima and LaToya of @jackjoneslitarts for their vision. #jjlaretreat
I’m in the July issue of Essence with the QUEEN of all Queens, Ms. Janet Damita Jo Jackson on the cover!!! Gave a shout out to some people and products I like ( @hiwildflower 🌺). Thanks to @missjulee at Essence for thinking of me, and to @johnpmidgley for letting them use the beautiful b&w portrait he took of me. Gonna listen to nothing but Janet for the rest of the week.
Giver of heartfelt, often hilarious speeches. Possessor of many quality dance moves. My daddy. ❤️

My auntie Valerie made our broom. She cut off a piece of her honors graduation stole for the kente cloth, and carried the broom from LAX to our ceremony. My auntie Karen wrote the words that our officiant said before we jumped. My mother brought up the broom when it was time. We carried the broom with us to Mexico City. We almost had it confiscated by airport security there, but shoutout to my middling Spanish for convincing them not to. When we got to Belize everybody working at the airport congratulated us, and we took the broom on a very tiny plane. Now it’s home.
