@brandonmaxwell, as if it wasn’t enough you custom-made me and the bump a knockout dress, you put this tag in it. Thank you, new friend 💕
It’s not for a movie... #2 All kidding aside, for everyone going through infertility and conception hell, please know it was not a straight line to either of my pregnancies. Sending you extra love 💕
Yes the anti-abortion movement is primarily about controlling women’s bodies under the premise (for many, sincere) of saving lives, and yes this law is primarily the work of white men HOWEVER a white woman sponsored the bill and a white woman signed it into law. As we’re resisting, let us also call out the complicity of the white women who made this awful moment possible, and which–make no mistake–WILL lead to the unnecessary and avoidable deaths of women, a disproportionate number of whom will be poor and/or black. Speak up. Show up. Don’t give up. I just took some time off from Instagram but when I would check in, I found myself repeatedly moved by @gretathunberg and the work she is doing for Mother Earth. I hope you check out what she is about (link in my bio). To the students who have taken up Greta’s call to strike, please know you inspire me, and that I am proud of you for claiming your place in this world. I am curious: what do you think us older generations could be doing right now for the climate that we are not? What kind of support do you want? Greta- thank you for everything you are doing and, for what it’s worth, for lifting up my heart and giving me hope. #fridaysforfuture #schoolstrike4climate #climatestrike
I know this is an inspired representation of an even greater divinity. I know this blessed place is a human-made interpretation of what is mysterious, unknowable, and undefinable and while seeing her burn brings tears to my eyes, I know even flames cannot diminish her sacredness. Still, not her. Please. Not her. #notredame #ourlady
Thank you so much to UN Secretary General @antonioguterres_un for meeting with me and for expressing your support for Paid Parental Leave! It was an honor. @unwomen
This #IWD2019 I want to highlight the brilliance of @laylafsaad. She is no-joke changing the world and, for what it’s worth, the way I live my life. Layla, I hope to meet you someday and thank you in person. Until then, please know my respect and appreciation know no bounds. Please download Layla’s workbook “Me and White Supremacy”, do the work, and check out @goodancestorpodcast. Also, I highly recommend reading the @elleusa article in my bio. Peace xx
#TFW you’re at the photo shoot and @hairbyadir freshed up your ends and @beau_nelson made your brows do something cool and Malibu is just being Malibu so you take selfie and what was I talking about doesn’t matter byeeeeeee
No matter what happens with today’s show, just remember, it’s already been worse. Happy Oscars!
Lee Radziwill and Karl Lagerfeld: each was a legend, each left a considerable legacy and indelible imprint behind, each brought their own contribution of beauty, artistry, genius and refinement to the world. #RIP #withrespect #bowbeforegreatness
This post resonated with me- way to go @zerowastehome- and I wanted to share it with you. It also brought up something for me: I am conflicted about blithely touting a zero waste lifestyle here because I know so much of my ability to even attempt it rests on my privilege. I feel it’s borderline obnoxious for me to promote this lifestyle like everyone has the same access to it that I have- I mean, reusable water bottles are great but not when you live in a community with unsafe drinking water. Buying bulk is not an option when you live in a food desert and have no time. Access is not the same for everyone, and yet I can’t deny that committing to living this way is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I have never had a perfect zero waste day. I will never fit five years of trash in a mason jar, but I am not mindlessly filling up landfills at the rate I was either. Just offering my best gives me something to feel good about and, over time, my best has gotten better. No one can do everything but almost everyone can do something. Have you tried adopting any zero waste habits? What’s working for you?
#tbt to that time Princess Mia and Fat Amy got together and stole everything. (Also @rebelwilson, can we please release the trailer already??) #HustleMovie
Please join me in holding @JussieSmollett and his beautiful family in power and healing. Jussie, I am so sorry this happened. I am so sorry and I stand with you. Love is love, we are all equal, and this is a bitterly sad day. There have been too many bitterly sad days.
We keep it real around here: some critics get @serenityfilm and, like me, find it interesting, moving, ambitious and different, and for some it just doesn’t work. That’s cool- there is no failure, only learned events, not everyone has to like everything, and the critical response doesn’t change my feelings about the movie. However, other people’s time and money are not to be taken for granted, so I just want to be clear: I endorse the movie, many critics don’t 😉 Anyway, wasn’t my @givenchyofficial skirt for the premiere rad? 💙
We strutted, I was @thefredsavage‘s Head’s Up partner, and we got weird with clementines (What? Just watch 😉) Love and thanks to @theellenshow for always being the best x
“Let no man pull you so low as to hate him.”- MLK Thank you Dr. King for sharing your tremendous light. It’s an honor to live in a world which bears your footprint, in which your words echo and transform hearts, my own included.
We laughed, I made crazy eyes at the audience, and I served my best McConaughey (#sorrynotsorry Matthew, it’s the price of being an iconoclast.). @jimmykimmel is a treat and it was my absolutely pleasure to stop by (#sorryactuallysorry I didn’t get this post up last night!) @serenityfilm #SecretsWillSurface
Wow. Check out 2009 me trying so hard not to do anything wrong. Check out 2019 me doing what feels right. Wicked sweet 🙂 #10YearChallenge
Matthew and I are learning our film Serenity isn’t easily broken down into sound bites. I really like movies like that, but just in case I am in the minority, here are some reasons why I think you should see it: I find Serenity to be a thrilling, ambitious, violent, spiritual, erotic, charged, dark, damning, contradictory, maddening, lushly intelligent film from the brilliant mind of Steven Knight. It asks a lot of the audience. It exists outside cut-and-dry, black-and-white moralizing, beyond the realm of “thumbs up” and “thumbs down,” “it sucked,” “it was bad-ass,” etc. It will need some analysis and conversation after. Good. Serenity is a sexy, surreal, modern noir for grown ups who are into things that don’t come standard. If that sounds like you, I hope you’ll consider giving us your time and attention. Thanks for listening xx #SecretsWillSurface @serenityfilm
What a fun week this is turning out to be! Thank you for having me on your cover @townandcountrymag! Big thanks to @eholmes for the thoughtful profile (I hit “ignore” on the 15 minute Instagram time limit most days fyi), @francescocarrozzini for being so talented and chill, and to the legend @therealnicolettasantoro for making me feel yummy and special and for telling me to relax my face 😘 PS- if you try the fire thing, please use common sense when burning your pages x

Thanking the lessons of 2018, especially the ones I feel like cursing; Welcoming 2019 with all the sweetness, softness and gratitude in my heart; Wishing blessings and abundance for us all. Happy New Year, darlings!! xx
RIP Penny Marshall. I’ll miss your voice (literally and cinematically). Give Garry a hug for me xx
My country gassed children. There are no words for my horror. To those who will immediately speak of “doing it the right way”, who will “blame the parents for putting the children in this position”, or say “they were storming the wall”, and “they were throwing rocks”: the only human response to this monstrous use of force against LEGAL asylum seekers- against children- is condemnation, shame, and rage. For those that still believe in voting for the man who recommended using lethal force on families fleeing violence and persecution: this is the policy you like? @nytimes

Adam and I join in the worldwide mourning of 11 innocent lives lost in Pittsburgh this weekend. We join in the forceful, worldwide, ongoing condemnation of White Nationalism, Anti-Semitism, and all forms of hate. We reject communities that are formed around the hatred, marginalization, and oppression of any group or religion under the flimsy cover of "free speech". We are full of sorrow, and we remain unbowed. Our hearts are broken, and we do not despair. We are full of love in the face of hate, as has been asked of us, always. We close our eyes and remember that the message of every great martyr and spiritual teacher has reflected the same truth: the path is clear, long, difficult, and worth it. We open our eyes and see that path which is made of, and has always led to, love. The glory of the soul is our true inheritance. We take the next step together.
Silence is not an option when the stakes are this high, and while the release that comes with posting righteous anger and outrage feels potent, I worry it is proving ineffective at actually reaching those who need to hear the message most. This leaves me no option but to let my anger take a back seat and offer this moment to love. To my trans siblings*: you have given us so much light to guide on the path of love- thank you, from the bottom of my heart. To all the trans children out there: I love you. You matter so much. I can’t wait until you grow up and teach us what comes next. Yes, I speak love here, but make no mistake: all the love and light in the world is nothing without action and justice, and so I will also get out and #VOTE for the rights of Trans Americans, and I will #VOTE against anyone threatening to dim the brightness of our shared future. To anyone rolling your eyes at this issue, or who thinks this doesn’t affect them: wise up, friend. We’re all in this together and the lives of our fellow Americans are under attack from the very top. I know this issue may feel challenging to some of you, but your feelings are not more important than another human’s intrinsic right to freedom and existence. #TRANSRIGHTSAREHUMANRIGHTS #wewillnotbeerased *thank you to those who took the time to clue me into the more appropriate non-binary language. Heard.
#DeeRees, powerful on her @nymag cover and powerful in life. I’m so proud to have worked with her on #TheLastThingHeWanted
I keep thinking how we move through things so quickly these days (how could we not?); I know my personal capacity to absorb something new is often maxed out. For example, a movie opens, we are “obsessed” for a weekend, we move on. I do this too: even when I really love something, I get distracted by the next thing, don’t fully digest the experience and I quickly move on, like the world exists only to entertain me, like great art is unlimited, that my consumption of it as an everyday all-you-can eat buffet is acceptable. We are so fortunate- a ton of worthy, excellent movies are going to come out between now and the end of the year, and our plates are going to become increasingly full. That said, I think A Star is Born is so special, so ambitious, so audacious and so brilliantly human that it shouldn’t just be a news story for one weekend. Even being so excited about what’s coming out, I want to really luxuriate in appreciation for A Star is Born. I saw this film back in August at the Venice Film Festival and I still walk around feeling lucky I was in that audience. This film surprised me in the best possible way; it even killed some cynicism that I didn’t know had snuck into my heart. I loved it. I hope you see it. Bravo @ladygaga. Bravo #bradleycooper. Thank you. Encore 🌹
Update: To all the men and women who are asking “what about boys”? There is a historic, seismic imbalance between the investment in girls and boys worldwide, especially when it comes to education, with boys overwhelmingly reaping the lion’s share of the reward. In a great deal of the world, educating girls is wrongfully seen as a waste of resources. Programs like this are aiming to level the playing field and evolve the outdated, all-too-common view that boys are more valuable than girls into one of inclusion and equality. I am proud to support any program or way of thinking that seeks to provide this kind of inclusivity and balance. The current reality is that girls need our help because of this generations-old imbalance, and this push towards equality is being done without excluding boys. I appreciate your intent, but this type of “whatabout-ism” is upholding an incredibly harmful and unfair status quo (which I can only hope is the opposite of what you want.) All the best, Annie — Love and support everything about this. When girls receive an education, amazing things start to happen: poverty goes down. Economies grow. Families get stronger. Babies are born healthier. And the world, by all accounts, gets better. That’s why on the International #DayoftheGirl, I’m proud to join @MichelleObama and the @globalgirlsalliance to stand up for adolescent girls’ education—because the future of our world is only as bright as our girls.
#FBF to last week when I had the honor of speaking with Prime Minister @JacindaArdern of New Zealand with my incredible @UNWomen bosses #PhumzileMlamboNgcuka and @enyamayaro about the exciting and necessary work the PM is doing to increase #PPL in NZ (I also got to meet her daughter Neve!). I ALSO got to moderate two panels at the @UNWomen global summit with some of our brilliant #heforshe #impactchampions- these are the men who are helping break through the glass ceiling, top down (thanks guys! ‘Bout time! 😉). So grateful and proud to be a part of this! Check out their concrete commitments to #genderequality at the link in my bio x
The importance of grace; The knowledge that power is nothing without respect; Why one must have patience, positivity, perspective, manners, kindness, and humility Always, To everyone, (No exceptions); The joy in treating people as a gift rather than a burden; How far choosing gratitude can get you... If I know anything about any of this, It’s because I was lucky enough to have learned from the very best at the very beginning. Happy Birthday Julie, Queen Eternal. All my love, Annie
