#DovePartner I talk about hair a lot, not out of vanity, but because embracing my natural hair has been such a pivotal part of my story. I remember being a little girl and begging my mom to straighten my hair because it felt like the women who were seen as “beautiful” had long, pin-straight, flat-ironed hair. That was the definition of beauty and presentability I followed for so long. After two decades of trying to fit into that ideal, I realized I had my own definition of what #BeautyLooksLike, and it involved embracing and celebrating my natural curls. @dove

Over the past year, having a solid deep conditioning routine has been a GAME CHANGER for my curls and has brought them back to life. After washing, conditioning, and detangling my hair with @soapboxsoaps shampoo and conditioner, I apply the Soapbox Coconut Oil Deep Rejuvenating Deep Conditioner, put on a shower cap and go about my business before following my wash and go routine. You can now find the full @soapboxsoaps line at @sallybeauty nationwide, and you can use the code “555215” for 15% off in stores and online. #DovePartner As a Black woman with type-3 curly ringlets, the hair texture privilege I experience on a daily basis is not lost on me. While I am proud of my crown and how far I have come in my natural hair journey, I know far too many of my brothers and sisters have had different experiences. While awareness is important, questioning and speaking out against Eurocentric and mixed-presenting standards of beauty simply isn’t enough - we need action to drive much-needed cultural change. That’s why I’m so passionate about the work of The C.R.O.W.N. Coalition co-founded by @dove supporting #TheCrownAct, the legislative bill aimed at ending race-based hair discrimination. When you invest in your dreams, the returns are incredible 🙏🏾✨. This has by far been the most eventful year of my career. I have made a lot of financial investments—coaches, online programs, podcasting equipment, and more. But a different kind of investment has yielded the biggest returns of all: investing in authentic relationships. . Building genuine connections with my extended community has been a game changer in the best way, and I have been able to give and receive amazing opportunities. If you’re looking for a way to expand your network, @fortefoundation is an incredible place to do so. #DovePartner Hair is so much more than just hair. 85% of Black women have reported feeling like they needed to change their natural hair to appear more professional, myself included. This weekend, I had the honor of attending #EssenceFest with @dove to drive awareness to the C.R.O.W.N. (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) Coalition, which was partly founded by @dove to combat the fear, scrutiny, and discrimination when expressing natural hair in the workplace. . On July 3, the #TheCrownAct was passed in California, outlawing race-based hair discrimination in the workplace and schools. While this is a huge step, we have so much more to do. Head to TheCrownAct.com or the link in my bio to sign the petition and help end hair discrimination nationwide.

This past weekend I celebrated my 1-year curly anniversary, and by celebrated, I mean posted IG stories about it 😂🎉 . But in all honesty, reaching this point has me in a deep state of reflection about all that can happen in a year. This time last year I had just been laid off from my job and was hustling hard creating fitness programs and freelancing to make ends meet. These days, my life looks completely different. I barely recognize the young woman I was a year ago, and so many things I've prayed for are slowly coming to fruition. . Now, at the end of the day how your hair looks and what you choose to do with it are highly individual and are NOT an indication of your worth, potential, or love of self. But for me, a person who was perpetually insistent on creeping through life undetected, walking around fully embracing my mane has played a huge part in my ability to feel comfortable being vocal, seen, and heard. It's a journey that I am forever grateful for. Thank you for following along with me! . Oh, and swipe 👉🏾for my day 1 curls exactly one year ago (to the day!). If you're transitioning and feel discouraged, I promise it gets better. Give it time and TLC. Your crown is uniquely yours, and that in itself is beautiful 💕👑

#DovePartner I got sick of seeing the same images of wellness and beauty being shown over and over, and created a platform to help broaden that narrative. While it is a start, there is still a lot more work to do. I’m teaming up with @Dove to keep the conversation going as part of Project #ShowUs. 70% of women don’t feel represented in the media and advertising they see, perpetuating a narrow definition of beauty. Thanks to @Dove, @Girlgaze and @Gettyimages Project #ShowUs will be the first publicly accessible photo library to shatter beauty stereotypes around the world. Where you'll find me all summer: outside, minding my business with a bubbly bev in hand. 💃🏾✨ . My favorite sip at the moment is from our @balancedblackgirlpodcast partner @soundseltzer. It’s light, super refreshing and is fermented from whole ingredients. Personally, my favorite flavor is the rosé made from fresh-pressed blackberries, because...yes way rosé. 🍾💕 . Advice is easy to share, and hard to take. For the past few weeks, I’ve been feeling real 🥴 on all levels - personally, professionally, you name it. Beating myself up over where I “should” be, or what I “should” have. That the things going right are far inferior to the things currently going wrong. And I know what advice I often dish out. . That we have to stop shoulding all over ourselves. That all things happen in due time. That things work out how they are supposed to. But man, those things are a lot easier to say than they are to truly put into motion. Especially when the gap between where you currently are and where you want to be feels impossibly large. 📷: @paosanchezmedia

It’s almost 1 year into my natural hair journey and thankfully today my curls acted like they had some sense 🙏🏾🥴 👩🏾‍🦱 . Today on @balancedblackgirlpodcast, @kaylaagreaves and I had a great conversation about Black women, and our relationship with our hair. Specifically, we talked about the importance of texture representation in the natural hair community, the history of texture discrimination, the joy and beauty of type-4 hair, how we can be better role models for younger generations, and more. Tune in on #iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, Stitcher, and the blog, all linked in my profile. I would love to continue the discussion with you. 🖤✨
