White beaked dolphin! We came across a pod of about 30 individuals or so, one early morning in the Skjálfandi Bay. We initially spotted them as red dots on the radar as they were jumping out of the water (special thanks to @bandgsailing for that one..). Visibility is not that great, but the wetsuits are ready for the next encounter regardless. Photo taken during the @arcticwhale.no project. Picture by @conormcdphoto

Celebrating @WorldoceanOceansDay with photos of pilot whales from our latest crossing between the Faroe Islands and Iceland. Go to Barba.no on Facebook to see a 360 video of the encounter. To me, World Oceans Day should be about keeping whales, and all the other creatures in our oceans, safe for generations to come! For it to happen it requires an effort from us all, to turn our words into actions. Go green and blue, and happy celebrations! Andreas ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣From our ongoing @arcticwhale.no whale.no project with. As a child I would read books about the animals of the natural world. One of them stood out. The blue whale, the biggest animal there ever was, dwarfing even the dinosaurs. Having sailed from Stavanger Norway, to Iceland to work with blue whales this summer a lifelong dream finally came true. The photos were taken from our last sail by Tom Grove from @whalewise , showing a blue whale feeding in the surface. Tom leads a team of passionate and determined whale scientists. Do check out their account! We look forward to working closely with Tom and his team for the weeks to come on the @Arcticwhale.no project.

From our encounter with pilot whales a few days back. I have not been in the water with these whales as of yet, but can’t wait to give it a go. Supposedly they are a bit more unpredictable the orcas, but just the idea of seeing this underwater makes it all worth it. Under the surface there must have been at least 3 times more, and the pod was several hundreds strong. Even in the pristine waters off the North Atlantic, the pilot whales are found to be contaminated with high amounts of pollutants such as DDT and PCB. If you want to protect these amazing creatures, keep going in the green direction. Photo shot during our ongoing @arcticwhale.no expedition. Introducing Tord Karlsen, our onboard photographer during the month of May. He will help us document the first half our @arcticwhale.no expedition to Iceland this summer where we will be studying whales, with a special emphasis on Blue whales. We met with Tord in the town of Bleik a few years back, while working with orcas. He brings a huge amount of energy and determination to the task at hand, in addition to substantial experience from working under challenging conditions in the Arctic onshore as well as at sea. Check out his account @tordkarlsen - We will be posting more of his work in the weeks to come! The walrus (Odobenus rosmarus), from Svalbard in 2015. It´s the animal of the Arctic I fear the most to get in the water with. As opposed to orcas, I find them unpredictable. They are known to kill polar bears in the water, and suck the flesh of seals. Mostly they eat scallops though, and I have read that there are ways to tell them apart. Still, last time I enjoyed watching them from shore. Still very tempting.. On a separate note, I have not dared to watch the latest disturbing footage from Our Planet, with melting ice severely affecting the population. It still brings to mind that negative trends can be changed. They were hunted close to extinction in this region, but following their protection they now count over 4000 individuals. By embracing the green shift, we can see them return to mainland Europe one day, where they once used to be in the thousands. “A boy and his boat” as the photographer titled the photo. And yes, it is a love story. Not for the boat though. The boat is just a tool, it´s a love story for the adventures we get to go on and the animals we get to meet, witnessing spectacles of nature we never imagined possible. Most importantly the fabulous people with a common passion for nature and the ocean. It also feels good to see the world in a low impact way, using the wind for propulsion and living with the elements. A humpback whale showing off its pectoral fin.. The display went on for about half an hour, as if it was waving to us, occasionally slapping the surfce. Maybe to communicate with fellow whales, or just to show off. Agenda for the week: Get in the middle of this under water.. A couple of failed attempts so  far, but more days to come. Shot yesterday up North. I am only spending a week here this season, as Barba is home in Stavanger priming up for the planned 5-month expedition “Arctic Whale” in 2019. In the making with @turnss___ . As always looking for crew, storytellers and support to help communicate the challenges and the beauty of the Arctic. Good to be back! #arcticwhale

@mark.romanov , victorious at last! Following about ten days of scouting last season, in weather shifting from blizzards to dead calm seas we finally encountered the first pod of orcas feeding on herring close to shore. To my knowledge this was the first encounter of its kind of the season. With no other boats in sight, calm seas and sunshine it was also one of the best days last winter. As for the herring itself, do note the last photo. The length measurement was complicated due to the fact that it had been subject of an orca encounter. They consistently spit out the head and the tail. Not bad for an animal measuring up to 6 meters / 18 feet! Fortunately we Mark got Mark back onboard in one piece.. #orcas #freediving #whales #cetaceans #arctic #ocean #nature #killerhwhales #norway #adventure #adventureswithpurpose #conservation dinghy by @takacat @takacat.se

Pilot whales! A couple of days back, I had the pleasure of meeting with a super pod of pilot whales, just next to home in Stavanger. It must have been a hundred or so individuals in the fjord system. They are about the same size as orcas, and feed mainly on squid according to litteratrure. By "hanging out" in the area, they eventually approached us.. As opposed to killer whales, pilot whales have been known to attack divers. Unfortunately we were not geared up to see if these guys were of the friendly type.. Regardless, it was an enjoyable encounter, and it made we want to sail straight out at sea to spend more time with orcas. If someone is tired of spending time in the office mid August and keen to help fund a short orca adventure, do let me know.. #pilotwhales #whales #cetaceans #naturelovers #arctic #ilovenorway #liveaboard #ocean #nature #boatlife #visitnorway #mittnorge #mittfriluftsliv #utno #igscandinavia #thebestofnorway #liveterbestute #norge #killerhwhales #norway #bestvacations #natgeoadventure #adventure #senja #stavanger

The last photos from Greenland for now. The contrasts is one of many reasons I love the arctic so much.. This was taken our last night before we sailed east again, towards Iceland and subsequently Norway. The island where this photo was taken was fittingly named after «Erik the Red». A a Norse explorer, remembered in medieval and Icelandic saga sources as having founded the first settlement in Greenland. As we sailed out into the open sea, I had my first encounter with orcas. Little was I to know back then that I would later spend months in the field studying these magnificent animals up close. #Greenland back in the day. Tempting faith somewhat. It´s not advised to go too close to glaciers, especially the deeper and actively calving ones. Not something I would have done again today. The first time up close to a glacier it was simply too hard to resist.. Also to my defence, a dinghy with an outboard is like a time machine. First time whale swimmer up close. Since then I have learnt great many things on how to interact with these gentle giants. They are generally fast swimmers, so the drysuit and diving gears has been changed to a wetsuit and freediving gear. Then there is reading the behaviour, which is a whole new game altogether. Heading out again this summer to look for whales in the North-Sea basin. Still a great deal more to learn and experience. Have a good weekend! Greenland 2010. My first time ever in the water with a whale. Most of all I remember being scared, but the drive to get up and close was there, as it still is today. The whale was rather indifferent, diving down to feed in the deep. This is easily recognisable as humpback whale due to its rugged tail. Each individual can be identified by its unique tail profile. Perhaps we have met with this whale outside Norway again years later. Not unlikely, given that they migrate all the way from the Caribbean to well north of the Arctic circle.. Anyways, Greenland, I shall return! Greenland 2010. It never occurred to us that bringing ice axes and crampons would be useful to bring along… Instead we used a hammer and screwdrivers. Very unscientific, yet the mission at the time was a success. Climbing these things are actually quite hard. The structure resembles slippery concrete.. Also, since they melt from underneath, they turn around every now and then, thus adding to the excitement… From the left Daniel, Ketil and Glenn. A series of throwback photos from sailing to Greenland back in 2010. We did not know a whole lot about expedition sailing at the time, and the gear we had was rather limited. No radar, AIS or forward-looking sonar as we have today, and a USB GPS antenna from Ebay was our primary navigation aid. Yet the adventurous spirit was plentiful. Learn to crawl before you can walk, and this was the very first vital stepping stones for building the experience needed for the adventures to come with Barba. It was also the first time, we encountered the large baleen whales and orcas. My favorite baleen whale, the humpback seen in the first photo. #sailing #greenland #adventure #arctic #ocean #boat #cruising#nature #boatlife #sailchecker #mittfriluftsliv #utno #liveterbestute #adventure #boating #adventureswithpurpose #conservation
