'I always knew of Adrian Hoffmann – most Barossa people do – but I’d never met him in person, so I was intrigued to get to know the person behind the persona.⠀ ⠀ You’d definitely be hard pressed to pigeon hole Adrian – he’s a larrikin, but very much a businessman; a modernist, but still a traditionalist. He’s a big talker and a straight shooter, but also unexpectedly humble, especially talking about the legacy created by those who went before him. I definitely think a few more hours in the company of Adrian and a Hoffmann Shiraz would be time well spent. – Heidi Helbig, Barossa Mag Contributor ⠀ Get the full story from @thebarossamag (link in bio)

"And I think Robert Hill Smith who is the owner of @yalumba said to me at a tasting once that old vines are old because they’re good not good because they’re old... But you know you’ve got these really gnarly old vines with roots going way down and they produce just these really deep wines that age beautifully. So, we definitely should still be celebrating the style and there are so many producers making amazing wines. One that I really love and recommend and support a lot is @timsmith who’s making some amazing Shiraz but also an amazing sort of Mataro a forward Rhône-blend and some really great Grenache as well out of the Barossa." Join Christina Pickard, Wine Enthusiast Contributing Editor and Tim Harris of New York's Burke & Wills and the Manhattan Cricket Club as they chat about the diversity of Australian Shiraz. May we please introduce you to Peyton Papps: a leader of Barossa's next generation. 🌿 From @yellandandpapps: In 2016, Peyton who was then nine was finding it hard to grasp Mathematics. We could see our daughter struggling and feared that she may never see the joy and the excitement that maths can bring. This had us worried that she will fall further behind and continue to struggle so we decided to do something about it. . We decided to, by no means lightly, change schools and try and do everything we can to see if we can change this around. Peyton was fortunate the first year at a new school to have an amazing teacher which really got her excited about Maths and had patients to turn this around. . At home we thought that maybe she needed to see Maths applied differently and gave her a project to make some Verjus from our home block of Cabernet Sauvignon. This gave her skills to see tonnage and weight convert into litres, and then seeing pricing of getting this into bottle and costings. The first year was a very small amount and this was bottled in house by friends from school that got to join in on the fun and excitement. We decided that in 2019 we were giving Peyton the small block of estate Cabernet Sauvignon for her project, but this was a huge step up from 2017. . Peyton had to work with a designer to design her label, liaise with the printing company regarding paper stock and quantities, ordering of glass, capsule selection, bottling, picking, making of verjus, and costings. (with help from us of course) . We have been very fortunate that people in the wine Industry have taken the time to explain and describe the process to her. . In a nutshell the first year is working out incomings and outgoings and experiencing how we all use Maths in our day to day work life. Now Peyton seems to enjoy and is excited about Maths, which is exactly what we were hoping for. Let’s just hope she keeps that enthusiasm. . Peyton and her verjus will bringing a little piece of the new generation at Barossa. Be Consumed in Sydney and Melbourne in just a few weeks time. We love seeing these beauties given another life... From @winestainsbarossa ... "This is how it all starts... One thing we’ve always tried to tie into our brand story is that we are passionate about sustainability which is what makes our products and us different. We purchase used barrels from wineries that can no longer be used by them and turn them into the many products you see us create, we are always sure to use every part of the barrel, even the rings that hold it together are used as handles on some of our boards. For every design sold, a tree is planted 🌱🌍💗 " What's better than enjoying a glass of wine over a platter served on the barrel from which it was made? 🍷 #barossawine #barossa #upcycle #plattertime #winetime

Tim Smith’s introduction to the world of wine isn’t your typical story. The recently crowned 2019 Barossa Winemaker of the Year grew up in Adelaide’s western suburbs, left school at 14 and worked as a roadie for Aussie rock bands for seven years. “I worked for all of the great ‘80s bands – Jimmy Barnes, Dragon, Rose Tattoo, Midnight Oil, you name it. It was a great life, but it wasn’t a life for a family,” Tim says. It’s no surprise that a muso like @timsmithbarossa has prepared a killer playlist for his roadtrip to Sydney and Melbourne in July for Barossa Be Consumed. Here are some of Tim’s tracks: ‘Stagger Lee’ Nick Cave ‘Gravy’ Paul Kelly ‘Ain’t no fun (waiting round to be a millionaire)’ AC/DC ‘Wide Open Road’ The Triffids ‘Chase the Dragon’ The Beasts of Bourbon ‘Catholic Girls’ Frank Zappa ‘Dead Flowers’ The Rolling Stones ‘Real live bleeding fingers’ Lucinda Williams ‘Redheads, gold cars, and long black limousines’ Tex, Don and Charlie ‘Saturday night and Sunday morning’ Paul Kelly ‘One long day’ Cold Chisel ‘Its Oh So Quiet’ Bjork ‘These are the days’ Keith Urban ‘Prisoner of Society’ The Living End Catch up with Tim, debate his playlist choices, and taste his fantastic wines at Barossa Be Consumed in Sydney on July 13 and Melbourne on July 20. Chateau Yaldara, one of the Barossa’s most beautiful properties, has been brought back to life over the past four years. Built by German migrant Hermann Thumm on the banks of the North Para River in 1947, Chateau Yaldara offers a collection of delicious hand-crafted wines, a popular restaurant and a Baroque-style chateau, which is home to the cellar door. When phylloxera wiped out much of Europe’s vineyard plantings, depleting wine stocks, word was sent to the colonies to produce quality red table wine and export it to the UK. The 1950's were a time of optimsim and innocation for Barossa Valley's wine industry. Australia’s most famous winemaker, a pipe-smoking Penfolds blender, Max Schubert packed his suitcase and travels to Bordeaux. He discovered the power and complexity of super-premium table wine, in particular the flavour of Cabernet Sauvignon matured in French oak casks, but when he returns the post-war shortage of these “luxuries”, leads him to make an experimental full-bodied Shiraz and mature it in American oak hogsheads. The 1951 Grange Hermitage is a unique new Australian style of red wine which will go on to chart the direction of this Antipodean wine nation for the next 60 years. Meanwhile up in the chilly Barossa Ranges, Cyril Henschke makes the first single vineyard Mt Edelstone Shiraz in 1952 followed by Hill of Grace Shiraz in 1958. Then, after extensive overseas research into secondary pressure fermentation and cold stabilisation, Colin Gramp launches Orlando Barossa Pearl in 1956. The resounding success of this “wine for the masses” encourages many copies: Sparkling Rhinegolde, Pineapple Pearl, Starwine, Cold Duck, all of which make wine more accessible to the general public, in particular young women. Demographers later believe this is the real cause of the 1950s Baby Boom! For more information on innovation read our Barossa Vintage reports in our bio.
