For our sixth and final takeover, we are excited to announce Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston's 2019 Youth of the Year, Gernell! Gernell hails from our Yawkey Club of Roxbury. Gernell, a Club member for 11 years, exemplifies what it means to be a Club kid and role model. A self-described resilient and ambitious leader, Gernell describes her Club journey as an “evolution.” As a shy six-year-old she entered the Club for the first time and struggled to find her place. As the years went on and various activities got in the way of attending the Club, she returned as a seventh grader determined to take full advantage of all the Club had to offer. She joined Torch Club, the first step in her journey through the Club’s Leadership Pipeline, which earned her a spot as a Young Leader, Counselor in Training, Junior Staff, and, finally, a Keystone member. Gernell interned through the Summer Youth Jobs Initiative and spent two weeks in India with the Explore India Program. Gernell's leadership and travel experience gave her the tools she needed to become the charismatic, outspoke, and the self-assured young woman she always wanted to become. Gernell takes those skills and applies them to her role as a dedicated member of the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston, where she has been a consistent and reliable mentor for her Little Sister for the past three and a half years. After graduation, Gernell hopes to attend one of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities and become a travel nurse. Congratulations Gernell!

⭐️ Instagram Takeover ⭐️ Follow along in our stories this afternoon with Mattapan Teen Center Youth of the Year Niyah, one of the Clubs first members. She remembers her first day and how welcoming the staff was, she felt she could easily be her authentic self there. She credits the Club with opening doors for her and exposing her to new worlds. MTC has given her a platform to further explore her passion for the arts including dance, painting, writing, and performing. In addition to being a member of her high school’s dance team, she is an integral part of MTC’s dance team. Niyah has also performed spoken word at the Club’s annual Hip Hop Showcase. During her time as a member, Niyah has engaged in community service projects, attended a Historically Black Colleges and Universities fair, and participated in entrepreneurial programs. Niyah has worked extremely hard to put herself on a path that will bring her both joy and success and plans to pursue a career in art therapy. Congratulations Niyah!

⭐️ Head over to our stories to learn more about Deedee, Jordan Club's Youth of the Year. ⭐️ Deedee joined the Club eight years ago and fell in love with the aquatics program immediately. Through her involvement with aquatics, Deedee has beaten personal records, attended Nationals in Florida, become a certified scuba diver, and today serves as a lifeguard and assistant coach at the Club. When walking through the Club, it is common to see younger members call out her name and run over for a high five. A kind and natural leader, she sets an example as a model Club member for everyone, including her two younger brothers. As a teen, Deedee has always managed to balance a busy school schedule with her continued involvement at the Club. Her strong commitment to both academics and her Club community will serve her well as she heads to Dartmouth College in the fall. Congrats Deedee!
⭐️ Instagram Takeover ⭐️ Head over to our stories this afternoon and meet Gina, Charlestown Club's Youth of the Year! Gina joined the Club when she was 8 years old and has been a model member ever since. She calls the Club a place where she can be the best version of herself and credits staff for recognizing these qualities in her. Those who know Gina are quick to comment on her integrity, kindness, and drive to succeed. She excels at school, where she participates in the rigorous IB Diploma Program. At the Club, she can be found volunteering her time at the front desk, library, and games room. After balancing a heavy workload at school and a consistent commitment to the Club, she earned a spot in the highly competitive Explore Japan Program and looks forward to representing her Club in Japan this spring! The second photo shows Gina pointing at a sign she worked on when she was 11 years old that continues to hang in the Club today! Congratulations Gina! #YouthoftheYear
Happy St. Patrick’s Day from the Charlestown Club!
Today, we celebrated the Edgerley Family South Boston Club's 43rd St. Patrick's Day Luncheon with some special guests! Before the jokes began, Keynote Speaker and Edgerley Club Youth of the Year, Matt, shared his Club experience with the crowd, receiving a standing ovation after his remarks! ⭐️ Instagram Takeover ⭐️ Meet Matt, Edgerley Family South Boston Club's Youth of the Year! Matt's dad (Southie Club alum) brought him and his twin brother, Mark, to the Club for the first time seven years ago. Most afternoons, you can find Matt in the Music Clubhouse where he learned to play several instruments and joined the Club band "The Harmaniacs". Matt demonstrates his commitment to community not only through his involvement with the Club, but also with his dedication to his school, where teachers describe him as "a gifted student" and "an exceptional human being." Check out the second picture to see Matt with the Club Arts Director Ann, who was also Matt's father's arts director! One of Matt’s personal goals is to try to be the best person he can be every day, and this has helped him serve as a role model for younger members. Congratulations Matt!
Over February Break, Mattapan Teen Center teens attended the New England Colleges and University Tour. Read Avaughns reflection of the first day below. "Our first day of the college tour was long and great. It started out with a long car ride to Worcester State University. That was one of my favorite colleges because it was welcoming and the campus seemed fun and like it was setup to help you succeed. Then we all ate lunch at a restaurant with great food. After that we went to Becker College, I don't think this right college for me, but I did like how they had a great program for people who like animals. Finally, we ended the day, going on a tour at AIC (American International College) which I liked a lot because of the campus and facilities they provided. Then we went out to eat at a buffet and finally went to a hotel to finish the day. Overall the first day was great and ten times better than I expected."
a few weeks ago, our Charlestown Club hosted a Dance Dance Revolution tournament with members of our Edgerley Family South Boston, Yawkey, and Jordan Clubs. We were honored to have the Greenberg family, who generously donated the machines, in attendance to see the fun DDR brings to our Clubs. Congratulations to the Jordan Club for winning the tournament!
⭐️ Instagram Takeover ⭐️ Meet Eche, Berkshire Partners Blue Hill Club's 2019 Youth of the Year! Eche has been a Club member for over ten years. Check out the third photo where Eche puts his hand over his 10 year old self's hand print! At the Club, you can find Eche at Studio Heat, Blue Hill's music studio, working on his latest rap song or mixing music or in the teen center. The Blue Hill Teen Director Jasmine, describes Eche as a "big brother to many members of the Club" and says "through his drive for music he has inspired other members to pursue their dreams". Eche hopes his generation will work together to find solutions for social problems and make a lasting impact. Follow his day today in our stories! #bgcboston #youthoftheyear

Regina, a member of #BGCBoston Yawkey Club of Roxbury, calls the Club her second home. When she first came to the Club, she was timid and introverted, but leadership groups and staff mentors helped her find her confidence and become more independent. Her mother knows that when Regina leaves the Club after she graduates high school, she has the tools she needs to be successful. In fact, 97% of BGCB families say the Club is an important part of their child's developmental years.
Happy Friday! What are your weekend plans? #TGIF
Forty Yawkey Club members had a very exciting Christmas this year thanks to the @celtics ! Thank you for your generosity!! Wishing everyone a happy and healthy holiday season! 📸: @celtics

Friendly competition, teamwork, enthusiasm, and fun was on display at last week's citywide Robotics Showcase @northeastern . Families, Yawkey teen members, and staff came out to support the Yawkey Club and Orchard Gardens Club teams. No winning Robots this year, but we all had a blast! #BGCBoston
On Tuesday, our Edgerley Family South Boston Club and Tierney program held the culminating event for their 50-day reading challenge with the Reed 83 program through the @andre_reed83 Foundation. NFL Hall-of-Famer and former Club kid, Andre Reed, designed this program and members at several other Clubs across the country have participated. This year both programs had a reading team, led by staff “reading coaches.” The competition was pretty intense over the course of 50 days with teams neck and neck. In the end, the Edgerley Club just “edged out” the Tierney team. The top reader from each team read over 500 books combined and will each be attending a New England @patriots game later this month. Congratulations to Dianis and Ian! The Club celebrated at the Reading Rally yesterday with scores, highlights, prizes, and special guest Matthew Slater from New England Patriots! He was wonderful to the kids and we are so grateful that he was able to take time out of his busy schedule to be with us.
The Edgerley Family South Boston @gotr_greater_boston team also completed their first 5k on Saturday! So proud of all our #GirlsOnTheRun members for their hard work!! #girlpower
Jordan Club’s @gotr_greater_boston team completed their first 5k today! Double tap for that! #GirlsontheRun #BGCBoston
Last year, Bri, Director of Operations at our Jordan Club, led our first Native American Program with the goal to expose teens to the story of our nation's first peoples. When planning for the trip, Bri knew there was one teen who would benefit immensely from the program. Click the link in our bio to learn how Bri and her staff support Angel and see the impact the trip had on him.
BGCB fosters a positive Club environment by offering targeted programs in which members build leadership skills, develop a sense of civic responsibility, and prepare for the future. Programs like Torch Club and Keystone stress the importance of community service and academic success, Young Leaders introduces teens to the world of work, and Experiential Travel Programs promote global citizenship. #BGCBoston
