🇬🇧 #bluethefilm is now available digitally for home entertainment in the UK on iTunes, Sky, Amazon and Virgin Media 🇬🇧 DVD release on 1 July!
We are honoured to have been named a finalist in this year's OCEAN AWARDS, held in partnership with the Blue Marine Foundation one of the UK’s leading ocean conservation charities. BLUE has been nominated in recognition of the film’s campaign to advance marine conservation objectives, including public literacy about fixing the largest solvable problem on the planet – the crisis in our oceans. The other nominees include Greenpeace for its 'Protect the Antarctic' campaign and The Ocean Race round the world sailing event, which began in 1973 and now highlights the issue of the devastating plastic crisis impacting upon our seas. Our little team are humbled to be nominated in the company of such incredible peers and we thank them for their powerful advocacy work. We all have our part to play in ocean conservation and we hope Blue continues to inspire change in all those who see the film. #oceanawards2019 #bluemarinefoundation #protecttheantarctic #greenpeace #oceanrace #saveourseas #endplasticpollution #goodpitch #documentaryaustraliafoundation #northernpictures #transmissionfilms #demandfilm #sparkypictures
The federal election is almost upon us, here’s where the major parties stand on ocean issues. ____________ #Repost @marineconservation.au ・・・ Where do the parties stand on our Great Barrier Reef & oceans this #ClimateElection? Use our scorecard below to find out. We asked the Coalition, Labor and The Greens to act on the urgent threats facing our vulnerable ocean wildlife - like stopping Adani’s coal mine and taking urgent climate action, protecting endangered species and tackling the ocean plastic pollution crisis at the source. Many people write and ask us about the people who appeared in Blue and what they’re up to now. They’re an inspiring group of individuals and their work fighting for the ocean continues. Madison Stewart @sharkgirlmadison was so moved by the shark markets we filmed in Lombok for BLUE that she has returned over the last few years to find ways to work with the local fishermen on alternative employment. Through passion and persistence she has set up an ecotourism venture, where shark boats and fishermen are now taking travellers to swim and snorkel on the shores of Lombok, redirecting resources into sustainable incomes and promoting the maintenance of marine ecosystems, rather than the wholesale slaughter of sharks and rays. Anyone can join these trips, so to find out more about #projecthiu head to Madison’s link in her bio. Madison hosts these trips personally, so if you’re inspired to make a difference and love sharks, join her next trip in May. Bravo Madison for being solutions focused and finding a way for others to contribute towards the protection of our marine life. #oceanguardian #saveoursharks #stopsharkfinning #projecthiu #lombok #bluethefilm #sharkgirl #chickswhorock

NAvakara seeks to activate as many people as possible through these film screenings followed by cohosted film discussions to educate about wastes and to encourage individuals in reducing their plastic consumption.

Australian sea Lions are beyond adorable! It’s estimated there’s only 6500 of these creatures left in the wild. Their population plummeted due to hunting, and although they are now protected, stresses from fishing and habitat change means these gorgeous marine mammals are still declining. Featured in #magicallandofoz the breeding population on Pearson Island is one of the healthiest colonies left in Australia’s southern seas. It’s also why drilling for oil in the great Australian Bight would be disastrous. Foreign company Equinor has just released their plans for drilling for public comment and you have till March 20 to give feedback. See more at the @greataustralianbightalliance for links to submit comments on drilling proposal. With the work of @greataustralianbightalliance @saveourmarinelifeaus and @seashepherdaustralia we hope marine sanctuaries will stay in place to protect the last colonies of these precious creatures. The plan is before industry regulator NOPSEMA and is open now to public comment for the next 30 days. This is your chance to tell them that Big Oil does not belong in the Great Australian Bight. News just in. Japan has confirmed they will leave the Southern Ocean at the end of the current whaling season and cease all hunting there. This means Australia’s migratory whales will now be safe in their Antarctic feeding grounds over summer. This is a huge win for the whales of our Southern Ocean - but it is a bittersweet victory and the battle isn’t over yet. Japan announced they are leaving the IWC so they can start commercial whaling in their own waters where some of the most threatened minke whale populations live. Whales face more threats today than ever before, yet Japan is turning its back on the IWC’s global efforts to protect them so they can hunt outside international control. "Why the government’s $444 million grant won't save the Reef": beautiful words from Australian Marine Conservation Society @marineconservation.au 💙
Save Our Marine Life! Please call or email the below representatives, let them know we want our marine parks safe. The vote is on Thursday 👇👇 ________ #Repost @forrestinwonderland ・・・ Lord Howe Island is one of several marine parks that are about to be destroyed by new legislation changes. It’s the biggest removal of area from conservation in history !!! . The process began 5 years ago, with Abbott’s government, and is now in the final stages - the senate is voting on Thursday whether to put the plan into place. This is terrifying. . In a time where all the science, logic & common sense is telling us we need more marine sanctuaries, Australia is going backwards. . The only chance we have is to impact the politicians who may change their mind on the vote - . Senator Stirling Griff (Centre Alliance)-email@example.com //(08) 8212 1409 🐠 Senator Rex Patrick (Centre Alliance)- firstname.lastname@example.org // (08) 8232 1144 // 1300 556 115 🐟 Senator Tim Storer (Independent)- email@example.com // (08) 8232 0220 // 1300 738 260 🐬 Senator Derryn Hinch (DHJP)- firstname.lastname@example.org // (03) 9820 2222 // 1300 498 035 . The best thing you can do is call, it takes 2 minutes & you won’t have to talk to the politicians themselves, or go into long winded explanations, just let their secretary know that you want the current marine sanctuary changes proposal abolished, and more protection for our marine areas (not less). . I’m calling them today to tell them this is unacceptable, and will influence how I vote. As a marine biologist, but also as a human who lives on planet earth, we need to protect our marine sanctuaries & wild places. I hope you’re with me. . 🇳🇿 New Zealand! 🇳🇿 The NZ Govt will ban single-use plastic bags, giving retailers six-months to eliminate them or face fines of up to NZD $100,000. “We’re phasing out single-use plastic bags so we can better look after our environment and safeguard New Zealand’s clean, green reputation,” said Jacinda Ardern, the prime minister. “Every year in New Zealand we use hundreds of millions of single-use plastic bags. A mountain of bags, many of which end up polluting our precious coastal and marine environments and cause serious harm to all kinds of marine life, and all of this when there are viable alternatives for consumers and business.”

More great ways to store food without plastic 💙 Excellent illustrations by Em Ehlers. _____________ #Repost @ecowithem_ ・・・ Random piece of trivia for the day: the first Plastic was invented in 1869 by John Hyatt. Errrr... good one, John! He wanted to create a substitute for the ivory being used in billiard balls that was driving the mass slaughter of elephants for aforementioned ivory. Nawww... John, dude. Sorry. Forgive me for what I said when I was angry 🐘💗. Those good intentions went awry when - post World War II - plastic “went viral” in day to day lives. We started using a material that last forever for functions that required minutes. My point is, the 1950s aren’t so long ago. These are relatively new habits. A teeny speck on the time spectrum of humans on Planet Earth. So it reeeeally shouldn’t be that hard to simply dial it back a notch. Adopt the sensible, more resourceful, less plastic habits of our grandparents. It isn’t that hard. It’s common sense. Here are some ideas inspired by yesteryears on how to store food without all the plastic.
Beeswax is a great alternative to plastic food wrap, which is used just once and thrown away 🐝 See the link in our story for @apartmenttherapy's really easy guide on how to make your own. All you need is beeswax beads, fabric & tools + an oven!
Ditch the plastic wrap, give beeswax a go! 🐝 The plastic wrap market in Australia is now valued at $51 million with 9/10 Australian households purchasing some kind of plastic wrap. Can you imagine how much of this is making its way into landfill and our waterways? 🐝 Beeswax has a long history of use for sealing, preserving for a variety of purposes. Ancient Egyptians used beeswax in a variety of ways, from preserving writing on papyrus, tablets & paintings, to sealing pots and mummification. In ancient China it was used as a medicinal ingredient and for wound treatment. Today it’s also used for candles, furniture and floor polishes, in cosmetics and food processing. 🐝 You can even make your own - check out our story for a tutorial on making beeswax paper at home. Cover photo by BeeBee. We encourage you to seek out local and small businesses (Etsy is a great place to look) or DIY when possible (see our next post). These are just ideas to get you started!
And still, sharks are being demonised, governments are killing sharks in nets and with drum lines, even though there are more humane methods of protecting people 🦈
There are so many alternatives out there these days! Paper, glass, stainless steel, silicone, bamboo, reed and other metals. Ditch the plastic, go reusable or don't use them at all! However, we would like to point out that straws can be essential tools for disabled people who may take longer to drink than a paper straw can handle, or need accessible options. #plasticfreeful #plasticsucks #plasticstraw #plasticpollution #goplasticfree
