Our “Senior Cord” studio work and @greenriverprojectllc collaboration Daybed, reimagining the historic tradition. “1904, Purdue seniors began a tradition of wearing -- and later elaborately decorating -- yellow corduroy pants, a practice that lasted for more than 60 years. In fall 1904 some Purdue seniors noticed a bolt of yellow corduroy fabric displayed in the window of Taylor Steffen Co., a tailor on Main Street in Lafayette. By the late 1950s, seniors were decorating their cords with color paints and inks. The tradition is believed to have lasted until at least the early 1970s.” - Amanda Hamon from Purdue Library

“This is a Charm Quilt from the 1870s-1880s. As the story goes...young women, let’s say teenagers, would collect hundreds to thousands of unique dress weight cottons to make these quilts. Some quilts have up to 2,000 individual printed fabrics. Friends and family would share prints with each other...it was said that the first man you met after you finished your Charm Quilt was the man you’d marry.” This type of quilt may have been connected to the trend of Button Charm Strings (of young women collecting and stringing 999 buttons together, with the 1000th button being supplied by her future husband and strung after they wed).

This is a photograph I took while visiting a factory we work with in New Delhi. The puffy floral motifs originated from a bright blue silk robe circa 1940s that I sourced in New England. Pictured here is the historical embroidery being reproduced by hand for men’s shirts.

“Here is Ali. We met him one night in St. Louis, the antique capital of Senegal. He works as a horse driver, so he was selling us a trip for the next morning around the town...the next morning we met for that drive. We were stopping the carriage everytime we wanted and in the meanwhile he was explaining to us the history of that mystic town.” Polaroid and story by @milesdealmas . “Thank you for supporting me in my pursuit of American storytelling.” From the @cfda awards last night...what a true honor it is to receive this award, to stand alongside such an amazing list of nominees and recipients. In college @parsons_fashion our whole class would stay up together to hear the winners announced each year, and I still cannot believe that my name has been called among them. Thank you to everyone (especially my team ❤️) who has supported Bode over these first few years – I am so grateful and look forward to sharing many more thoughtful narratives in the seasons to come.
