“A lot of people ask me how I keep going when I am living with an incurable disease and why do I keep running, and the answer is really simple... It’s called hope. I have this hope that my story is making a tiny difference in the rare cancer community, and that long-term survival will not only be possible, but it will be expected for people with my cancer.” — Gabriele @nbcsports made a beautiful feature on Gabriele’s life and legacy, and to honor her during the @usatf Outdoor Championships that are occurring this weekend. The feature is set to air on @nbc at 3:30pm CT, right before the women’s 1500m final. “She was never quite ready. But she was brave. And the universe listens to brave.” - Rebecca Ray _ 🦋Gabriele Ivy Grunewald Day🦋 💕June 25, 2019💕 🎉Happy Birthday, Gabe!🎉 _ Today is now officially “Gabriele Grunewald Day” in Minnesota and it is aptly placed on @gigrunewald’s birthday. But we don’t just celebrate you today, you deserved to be celebrated every day. _ We celebrate your grit, determination, and bravery. How you gracefully circumnavigated every bend in the road life so inconveniently threw at you. Like the bend in the arrow in the BLG logo, you kept your sights soaring forward. You didn’t fight the bend, you adapted to it and kept your aim straight. And honestly Gabe, it made you so much stronger. You took your quiet moments to feel frightened and sad, but you never let it take you over. You continually picked yourself up again and again. Even when you were weary, you found strength in the hope and faith you had in making a more promising tomorrow for not only yourself, but selflessly everyone else. _ And that’s why today is officially declared your day, so that we may never forget the aim you have, the strength to overcome the bend in the bow, and the beauty of the arc you have forever created, hanging above our heads like a rainbow 🌈➡️💫 _ ✏️: @abigailande #runningonhope #bravelikegabe
This is how many people @gigrunewald wants out being active on 6/25/19. Regarding a virtual option for Tuesday’s run: she and I hope we have people running with us all over the world Tuesday. You can make a number, you can tag #bravelikegabe or #runningonhope on social media. If you want to share your run you can create a @strava account and log your miles with a GPS watch or phone app. Moving forward, she wants you moving as frequently as you feel able. Whether you walk/jog/run/bike/swim. The online store will be filling back up soon and we will extend an international shipping option. I know Gabe is smiling down seeing everyone staying active and donating to rare cancer research. If you feel compelled you can donate one time or make a recurring donation at http://bravelikegabe.org/donate

Words of Remembrance, Part IV 💫 Gabe fought for splashing in the ocean and dates in NYC and Friday nights in with her sister and soulmate @abigailande. She fought for long chats at the kitchen counter with her mom, she fought for dad jokes and ice fishing with her dad. If you want to know where Gabe got her wonderful sense of humor, especially in the face of heartache, just talk to her dad. If want to know where she got her larger-than-life laugh, just talk to her mom. She fought for playful banter with her brothers. She fought for time at the lake with her in-laws. She loved her family fiercely and she loved her friends like family. She fought for beach volleyball with her besties and long chats over coffee that lasted late into the night. These are the things that Gabe fought for. . . In the days before her death, a few of us girlfriends were hanging at the hospital when Gabe said to us that ten years ago when she was first diagnosed, she told herself that she'd just try her best no matter what. She said it had been a crazy life but a good one. There was a noticeable shift in her that night; a new sense of calm and inner peace. The next night she told Justin that she was ready to go to Heaven. He asked her for just a little bit more time, so she gave it to him. There's nothing Gabe wouldn't do for the people she loved, especially for Justin. Everyone she met has seen and felt that in their time with her. . . When Gabe was told she maybe had 3-6 months left to live, she talked about how she needed to get her affairs in order -- specifically around her life's work with the foundation. I assured her there were plenty of people happy to help her with that. “But what do you *want* to do with that time, Gabe?” I asked her. And that's when she said, "to let everyone know I've loved them and always will." She didn’t say travel the world, or meet Taylor Swift, or sing a duet with Kacey Musgraves. All she wanted is for you to know how very much she loves you. For someone with no interest in legacy, she sure is leaving the greatest one of all; her faith, her hope, and above all her love. 💖 #bravelikegabe #runningonhope
Words of Remembrance, Part III 💫 About six weeks ago, during one of her long hospital stays to fight an infection, Gabe confided in @malvanessel and me that the doctors were worried about her. Not short short term she said, but like 3-6 months. I asked her how she felt given what the doctors were saying, expecting her to be devastated. I should have known better because, instead, she said, “it’s not what I expected, but I hope I can adjust.” . . It's not the kind of quote that makes a NYT headline but, to me, it's exactly how she lived her life; “it's not what I expected, but I hope I can adjust.” She didn't expect to be a 22-year-old diagnosed with a rare and incurable cancer, but she adjusted (and she set a PR in the 1500 the very next day). She didn't expect to have another cancer less than two years later right as her running career was really taking off, but she adjusted. She didn't expect to learn about a 4lb tumor on her liver just weeks after running 15:19 for 5k and just days after running in the finals at the Olympic Trials. But she adjusted. Cuz that's just it, Gabe never fought her circumstances. She fought for the things that made her feel most alive like running, and racing at the highest level in her sport. She fought for start lines and finish lines and post-race parties. She fought for dancing in the kitchen and singing karaoke at the Otter Bar and singing in the car at the top of her lungs. She loved singing. . . She fought for her husband and love-of-her-life, Justin, and Justin fought for her. Together, they fought for hard workouts on the track where they could control the pain and get lost in it. They fought for long runs on the river road, side by side as the sun set (Gabe was not a morning person by nature, as many of you know 🤗). They fought for late nights together and good brews and seeing @thenational as much as possible. They loved each other into Oblivions, and you could see it in the way they held hands. 🎶💕 . . #bravelikegabe #runningonhope . . 📸 @nateryanphoto
Words of Remembrance, Part II 💫 Gabe's gift with words made it seem like sharing her story came naturally. But I think she'd say that it never felt natural, especially in the beginning. She shared her story anyway because she knew it might help others feel a little less alone. And for Gabe, anything that could help someone else was worth doing. Gabe didn't care about legacy, she cared about making the world a better place. She cared about loving people fiercely and trying her best no matter what. She cared about seeing the beauty around her no matter how much she was hurting inside. More than anything, Gabe wanted all of us to experience the miracle and magic of our own strength.✨ . . Gabe knew that hope was absolutely essential to this. She knew it was hard to find so she made it her mission to give it to others. She started her foundation to do just that; to give hope. She knew that hope shared is hope magnified and she gave it away freely and unabashedly without expecting anything in return. Through her work with the foundation, I think she learned that to give hope is to get hope. Pictured is a passage that she wrote after her first annual Brave Like Gabe 5k in 2018. Please read this over and over, carry it with you and sit with it. Let it really sink into every corner of your being. Feel her Technicolor glow radiating through you. That's the hope she inspires. That's the hope we need to keep spreading. 💫 #bravelikegabe #runningonhope
Hi 👋 my name is Ladia. Gabe and I first met our senior year in high school at the Minnesota State Track and Field Championships. I had realized about 15 minutes before my race that I had left my spikes at home (as any responsible teen does 😜) so I was frantically running around the gymnasium asking if anyone had a size 6.5 spike I could borrow. Gabe was the only person to offer me hers. Unfortunately, they were a bit too big so I raced in my sneakers anyway but I knew in that moment that ✨this✨ was a special person. Fast forward a few months later and we were two of eight incoming freshman on the University of Minnesota Women’s Cross-Country Team. We ran right to the front of the pack on the first day of training camp and we’ve been friends ever since. Justin has so generously invited me to share some words of remembrance with you over the next few days. 🤗 There’s a quote hanging in Gabe and Justin's condo that says, "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle, the other is as though everything is a miracle." Justin hung this over Gabe during her final days at home because, despite all the pain and suffering that cancer forced her to endure, Gabe chose to live her life as though everything was a miracle. Instead of complaining about how hard her situation was, she lamented over how much harder other people had it. She refused to cast her struggles in a negative light and instead she chose to focus on ‘the possible’. In so doing, she inspires us to see ‘the possible’ in our own lives no matter what struggles we face. 💫 #bravelikegabe #runningonhope
Over the last few years, Gabriele knew she would not be on this Earth forever. Her main goal was to give future generations of people diagnosed with cancer more treatments and better treatments while remaining hopeful and brave. — Justin #repost @chipgaines ・・・ More than 10 years ago, my friend @gigrunewald was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of cancer. I understand that Gabe is not a patient at @StJude, but right now, she is fighting for her life. Cancer is ugly and it is mean and it doesn’t fight fair. This has gotten extremely personal.. so here’s what I’m going to do about it: I want us to hit that $500K mark by midnight tonight. So I will be personally matching all #ChipInChallenge donations made between now and midnight. ON TOP OF THAT, I'll also be matching that amount in the form of a donation to the #BraveLikeGabe Foundation, in Gabe's honor. That is 3x the power of your generosity in the fight against cancer.. and all YOU need to do is donate whatever you can to the #ChipInChallenge (link in bio) between now and midnight CT. I’ll take care of the rest. Together, we’re going to fight for those who are fighting for just one more day. This is for those precious kids at St. Jude.. we are pulling for you! And to my beautiful friend Gabe.. we love you and we are here for you every step of the way.
Gonna need you guys to send me some extra #Brave vibes tonight as I am so, so very bummed that I won’t be able to make it to the @bravelikegabe 5k tomorrow — because I am in the hospital with an infection and need a procedure done bright & early tomorrow. Literally the worst timing ever but I’m working with an all-star crew of friends, family, and the ACCRF to make sure it’s a great race in St. Paul. . It’s not lost on me that maybe this is one of the most poignant ways to show just how critical research is. Cancer is nothing if not incredibly inconvenient and we need more options. I wish I didn’t have to show it in this way because there’s so many people I’d love to meet and catch up with tomorrow (including my grandma who I don’t see very often ❤️). . But I’m gonna be brave and fight these fevers and hopefully the procedure will help me out big time. 🙏 Prayers very much welcome. . Have a heck of a time out there and celebrate what you’ve helped support and accomplish through the research grant! So overwhelmed by the love and I can’t wait to hear the recap. ❤️ #bravelikegabe5k #bebrave #rarecancerresearch
We had an awesome weekend down in Waco for the #SiloDistrictMarathon and part of the excitement also included reaching our #1224campaign goal for the Brave Like Gabe 5k! THANK YOU! 🎉 . We have closed virtual registration for now (there may be an opening again next week, stay tuned) but we are happy to announce that packets are shipping as we type and the @Strava challenge will now be May 12-19 — but you can run whenever through June 2nd, National Cancer Survivors Day. Instructional email coming soon! . We will continue to welcome additional runners to St. Paul this Sunday to boost 💥 our impact! So check out the weather (it looks promising) and come join us for a run fueled by hope! We’ve got some fantastic sponsors taking care of refreshments and we know you’ll have a great time breaking a sweat for a cause. 😊 . If for some reason you aren’t up for running or walking, we are still taking volunteers! And even casual photographers are welcome to help document our event. Email firstname.lastname@example.org for more info! . #1224campaign #bravelikegabe5k #bravelikegabe5k2019 #bravelikegabevirtualrun #rarecancerresearch #runningonhope
We have cracked 1,000 registrants for the #1224campaign — thank you! 🎉 . Spots are filling up quickly for the virtual 5k so we recommend signing up over the weekend to secure a spot! And we know some of you are worried about getting your packet — they will ship on Monday (we had some unforeseen delays). But just remember you can dedicate your run anytime May 5 - June 2 and the @strava challenge window will now be open completion (& competition!) May 12 - May 19! Thanks for your support and patience. . We are very excited for the St. Paul race as well but wondering if you know anyone who would rather ✨volunteer✨ or ✨photograph✨ the event. Please email us a bravelikegabe@Gmail.com and we will find you a meaningful role! . Thanks everyone and have a great weekend! 🎉
Cruising 😎 toward 1224! 🎉 . Friends! We. Are. Getting. There! 676! Thanks to everyone who is coming back for round 2 this year and anyone who is introducing a new friend or family member to our cause. We are so thrilled with how this year’s #1224campaign is going! . Did you know we will have some cool prizes again? We feel so fortunate to have the support of @brooksrunning, KLN Family Brands, @genucan, @rungum, @goodr and @polarglobal! So come ready to roll on May 5th and be sure you do your best in the virtual 5k as well to get hooked up with some swag. Details on @strava leaderboard coming soon! 🤩 . But in meantime challenge another friend or two to sign up and help us get even closer to our goal! . #bravelikegabe5k #1224campaign #makeadifference #rarecancerresearch #runforacause #runningonhope
Just popping in to say 🎉HAPPY FRIDAY🎉 and thanks to a bunch of new sign-ups, we are inching our way to 1224! . We’re up to 565 and we hope after the weekend we can say we hit that all-important ‘halfway there’ mark. ✔️ . Minnesota friends: we know it looks ❄️wintry❄️ out there but just think how ready you’ll be to enjoy spring when our 5k rolls around on May 5th! Sign up and give yourself something to look forward to. 🤗 . Enjoy the weekend! 🥳
And we’re off! 🏃♂️🏃♀️We are counting upward toward a team of 1224 again this year, and thanks to so many of you who have already registered, we’re already up to 374! 🎉 . You may recall from last year’s #1224campaign the reason for this number. On average, there are 1224 new Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (ACC) diagnoses in the US each year. In 2009, Gabe was one of the 1224. In 2015, our race co-director’s family member was one of the 1224. We ultimately want that 1224 to be zero, but for now we will work to contribute to the efforts of the patient-founded ACCRF as they coordinate innovative research across the globe to accelerate the development of a treatment — and maybe even one day a cure — for ACC. ❤️ . 1224 is a big or small number depending on your perspective. We hope to show, once again, how powerful a group of 1224 can be through this race and its contribution to research! 100% of your registration fee will go toward funding our research grant. . Please consider #runningonhope with us this May! . #bravelikegabe5k2019 #1224campaign #runningonhope #beatrarecancers #rarecancerresearch #makeadifference
Here’s a departure from my regularly scheduled programming (mostly napping and scavenging for more food) to let you know that the ✨2019 Brave Like Gabe 5k✨ registration is open and we would LOVE for you to join our team! 💪 . The reason I’m using a photo from last year’s race is because I haven’t been running much lately. This new medicine (Lenvatinib) has been a tough adjustment but I’m getting in some walking, biking, and elliptical when I don’t feel like running. Small victories. 💖 I’ll spare you some of my other side effects because, at least for today, I ain’t here for sympathy! I’m here to ask for help. . Since my recurrence of a rare, incurable cancer called adenoid cystic carcinoma in 2016, life as I knew it changed quite drastically. But it’s still a pretty dang good life. 💖 There’s still joy and magic and pain in my abdominal scar from laughing so damn hard. But the one thing that fills me up like nothing else is working with my foundation ( @bravelikegabe) and others to make a world of better outcomes for patients who are or will be in my shoes. . April is Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month and one of the last things I heard from my doc last month was “we’ve made so much progress on so many head/neck malignancies, ACC is just one of the toughest and we still don’t have an FDA-approved therapy. I’m so sorry.” I don’t want anyone to ever have to hear that! It hurts my ears and my feelings. I can’t fund every single rare cancer type all at once (but we will keep trying!) but we can join together for a run fueled by hope and take a big swing at ACC. 100% of your registration fee will fund a rare cancer research grant for the ACCRF. All we need is YOU to get this thing off the ground. If it’s anything like last year I know I’ll be absolutely floored by the support and generosity of my fellow humans. . Race in St. Paul is May 5th with @anderson_races with a free kids run and a mini-expo! Virtual run is again hosted by @athletebizusa and @strava is helping us connect to a leaderboard through their Strava Challenges. . Thanks for considering joining us! Link in my bio will show where to go to register for either race. . 💖 Gabe #runningonhope
Happy Friday Announcement! 🎉 Save the date ➡️ May 5th, 2019 for the 2nd Annual #bravelikegabe5k in St. Paul, MN. Virtual participation option will also be available. Registration coming later this month!
Quiet summer over here at @bravelikegabe (intentionally) — but we’ll be back big for fall! 💪 Starting with: . #repost from @gigrunewald . Lacing up those shoes — always! 👆👟 . It seems so small, maybe even insignificant, but this simple act has consistently been my saving grace as a cancer patient and survivor. We all hope for cures and effective treatments but those are often far from guaranteed and something we imagine in the future. Having something we can do TODAY to improve our performance status as patients, our moods & mental health, and in some cases even our prognosis is critical. And that’s why I choose to run through cancer. Sure, there are days I skip exercise (sometimes by choice, sometimes less so), but having exercise as one of my goals and a part of my routine despite the ongoing challenges of my treatments and diagnosis has been immensely helpful to my mind, body, and spirit. 🧘♀️🏃♀️💕 . And it’s pretty cool because now there’s quite a bit of research to support these benefits — much of it being completed at the very cancer center where I am often a patient: @sloankettering in NYC! 🎉🏃♀️🏃♂️ . This Saturday I will be joining Jessica Scott, PhD, who works in an exercise oncology research lab at MSKCC for a panel discussion at the @NYRR Run Center as part of their first-ever #RUNNERCON. Other panels throughout the day include @emmacoburn, @trackjenny, & @aliontherun1 among others! Event is FREE — link in my bio to sign up! 😊 . #bravelikegabe #exerciseoncology #nyrr #runnercon #nyrrruncenter #nycrunners #runningonhope . 📸: @davidbracetty
Coming 🔜 to the internet: #BraveLikeGabe x @brooksrunning Gear! 🏃♀️🏃♂️🏃♀️🏃♂️🏃♀️⬅️ . These will be hitting the website next week! 🎉 All proceeds from merchandise sales will go toward our rare cancer research general fund which will be distributed Fall 2018. 👍 . #runningonhope #runspiration #lookbrave #runbrave #repbrave #bravesquad
We wholeheartedly agree with Boston Marathon runner-up and #bravelikegabe5k2018 virtual runner Sarah Sellers: it’s never too late to get in some miles for a good cause. ❤️ Thank you for running with us and joining us in support of rare cancer research, Sarah! We are cheering for you from MN! 🎉 . #Repost @sarah_sellers ・・・ Running for something is always more fun than running from something. And I've tried both 😂 Celebrated #globalrunningday by running for @bravelikegabe's virtual 5k. If you need a reason to run, just read @gigrunewald's story and you'll have a list 💜💜💜 The virtual 5k technically ended several days ago, but when is it too late to run in support of cancer research? Never.
Happy #GlobalRunningDay from #BraveLikeGabe! 🏃♂️🏃♀️❤️🌍 . We love the run for so many different reasons, but lately we have really appreciated the way a run can change our perspective on any given day and also how it can unite us together in support of a good cause. ❤️ . Hollie (pictured) of @fueledbylolz seems to agree! Thank you for joining us in the #1224campaign and for dedicating some of your miles to rare cancer research on Global Running Day! 👍 . #Repost @fueledbylolz ・・・ Today’s workout was getting my Virtual 5k in for @bravelikegabe . . Smiling because it was a good run and even better cause.
Happy National Cancer Survivors Day from @gigrunewald & the Brave Like Gabe Team! 🎉 . Today we are celebrating life and honoring survivors in a very special way — by announcing our fundraising total & the completion of our #1224campaign in support of rare cancer research! We were overwhelmed and thrilled with the support this year. We can’t possibly thank our runners, sponsors, and volunteers enough for helping us make this happen! . We surpassed our goal of filling a team of 1224, with each of our participants walking or running in support of the average number of new Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma diagnoses in the US this year. Through registration fees and donations from virtual runners and those who joined us in St. Paul on May 20th, we raised $59,025! We also had a generous donor come forward during the campaign and offered a matching donation up to $50,000 for a grand total of $109,025 — all of which will fund rare cancer research through the ACCRF! 🎉 . Thank you, everyone, for your support and for running with us this year! We are hopeful for the future for all cancer patients and survivors because of research. It really does save lives! ❤️ . THANK YOU, and stay tuned for future campaigns from Brave Like Gabe. As we continue to view new posts and stories from our #bravelikegabe5k2018 virtual runners, we would like to say both great job and thank you! 🎉 We are getting close to announcing our final fundraising total on #NationalCancerSurvivorsDay! . And on this day of #wednesdaywisdom, we wanted to share post with perspective from Suzanne, a breast cancer survivor and also a #bravelikegabe supporter of rare cancer research. 😊 We are thrilled to know that Suzanne is doing well, running, facing a good long term prognosis, and that she’s even joined us in support of more treatments for cancer patients!
