Aimee Farnet Siegel received her BFA from Louisiana State University and went on to study at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts. She worked as a graphic designer from 1985 until 2005, when she began her studio practice of painting, collage, and works-on-paper. Her exhibition, ‘Principle of Uncertainty’, brings large and small paper works off of the wall and into the third dimension. You can see her work at the CAC until May 12th! Bonnie Maygarden is a multimedia artists who received her MFA in Studio Arts from Tulane University. She attended Pratt Institute in New York, where she received her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts. Being African-American and openly gay in the 1940s and 50s presented jazz composer, Billy Strayhorn, with numerous social obstacles, but, in this, Strayhorn became an active member of the civil rights movement, becoming good friends with Dr. Martin Luther King and composing historic music for the movement. #ArtistSpotlight: David Roussève is a magna cum laude graduate of Princeton University and a Guggenheim Fellow. His dance/theater company REALITY has performed throughout the UK, Europe, South America, and the U.S., including three commissions for the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival. At UCLA, Roussève is Professor of Choreography in the Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance. He’s bringing his piece, ‘Halfway to Dawn’, to the CAC April 5-7. “It’s all set to a soundscape of Strayhorn compositions, and while there is a projected text and video, this piece is propelled by movement and dance,”- David Rousseve, San Diego Story, 2018. ‘Halfway to Dawn’ tells the story of largely unknown, yet influential jazz composer, Billy Strayhorn. Being African-American and gay in Harlem in the 1940s and 50s, Strayhorn remained out of the public eye until more recent years when his contributions to jazz began to be recognized. This performance runs from April 5th-7th.
