Join us TONIGHT at Second Thursday as we explore the exciting world of art collecting from 6 - 9pm! Five archival prints will be on display at the CAC, including “Let Me See My Child” (2014) by Dapper Bruce Lafitte, shown here. Dapper Bruce Lafitte was born in 1972 at Charity Hospital and grew up in the Lafitte Housing Projects in the 6th Ward. With the encouragement of his grandparents who raised him, he began to draw at the age of five. Davenport has been described not so much as a self-taught artist as a self-taught anthropologist. His vivid color marker drawings, which have received international attention, provide detailed reenactments of the vibrant pageantry of New Orleans culture, the artist community, and his personal heroes. Second Thursday, our art-infused happy hour, returns TOMORROW with an exploration into the world of art collecting! Five contemporary prints that will be on display at the CAC, including “Flag for Prospect” (2009) by Skylar Fein, shown here. Skylar Fein brings an acute pop sensibility and political conscience to two- and three-dimensional works incorporating found materials, including items gathered off the streets of New Orleans. Fein began his career at age 37 after moving here just six weeks before Hurricane Katrina. He first gained recognition with “Remember the Upstairs Lounge” (2008), a multimedia installation piece that recreated local gay bar that was set on fire in 1973, killing 32 patrons and injuring dozens more. Second Thursday, our art-infused happy hour, returns TOMORROW with an exploration into the world of art collecting! Five contemporary prints will be on display at the CAC, including “Light Riding Shaft Skin” (1991) by Tina Girouard, shown here. Tina Girouard is an activist and multi-disciplinary artist - video, sound, textile, paining, performance, and installations - who is best known for her participation in New York City’s downtown art scene during the late 1960’s and 1970’s. Throughout her career, Girouard’s work has reflected her colorful Louisiana roots, while also making global cross-cultural references. In the 1990’s Girouard established a studio in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where she began creating sequined prayer flags with the local community. Today, the artist lives and works in Louisiana. Five contemporary prints will be on display at the CAC, including “Beach Scene With Seven” (1985) by George Dureau, shown here. Dureau's work as a painter and photographer electrified the New Orleans art scene until his death in 2014. His works live on as a permanent fixture of the city he loved, from the murals of Gallier Hall to the nude sculptures flanking the entrance of City Park. His work was incredibly diverse, from vibrant figural paintings portraying New Orleans in a mythological context, to stark photographic portraits of African American men. Learn more at cacno.org! Today the CAC joins our community in mourning the loss of yet another legendary New Orleanian: Malcolm John Rebennack Jr., aka Dr. John. As a cultural icon and performer, Dr. John's impact on the world of music and pop culture is immeasurable. But above all, he always kept New Orleans in his heart, rallying to support the city post-Katrina and serving as a proud cultural ambassador for the Crescent City everywhere he went. The CAC joins the rest of the New Orleans community in mourning the massive loss of chef, civil rights advocate, and art leader Leah Chase. In 1972, Mrs. Chase became the second African-American to join the board of the New Orleans Museum of Art, and soon after covered the walls of her restaurant with what many consider to be Louisiana's finest collection of African-American art. Throughout her life, Mrs. Chase served as a desperately-needed unifier during times of strife and division. In 1995, in an effort to save funding for the National Endowment for the Arts, Mrs. Chase told a congressional committee: “Art softens people up and warms them up to deal with each other in humane ways." Rest in peace Leah: we will never forget you! #leahchase #dookychase #nolaart #tribute #civilrights

Artist ADRIANA VAREJÃO (b. 1964, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) presents incisive reflections on the nature of Brazilian history and culture, specifically addressing Brazil’s postcolonial identity. Varejão's Polvo Series feature a series of self-portraits and color wheels. Following Brazil's 1976 census, which required every citizen to describe, in Portuguese, the color of their skin tone, Varejão developed a color palette imagined to correspond to the colors described in the colonial tongue by her fellow citizens.
