These pictures were taken at a vegetation management training burn conducted last week by the CAL FIRE Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit. Vegetation management training burns are integral in both training firefighting personnel in firing strategies and tactics; while also reducing noxious weeds, reducing fuel loading and ladder fuels, and promoting native grasses. #FirePrevention #VegetationManagement #FuelReduction #Training #Firefighters #TrainingBurn #FirefighterTraining #CALFIRE #California
With the support of the Governor’s office, CAL FIRE continues to foster the valuable relationship we have with the California National Guard; who share our mission to protect the people and property of California. #California #CALFIRE #FirePrevention

Including the six p’s in your kit works great, but one size does not always fit all. Make sure to spend a little extra time to take stock of those important items that are unique to you. For more tips, visit http://www.readyforwildfire.org/Emergency-Supply-Kit/
Yesterday, CAL FIRE SHU competed against local law enforcement in a battle of badges blood drive! CAL FIRE loves getting into the competitive spirit in the name of a good cause. #CALFIRE #BloodDrive #Community
Pictures from a prescribed burn today! These controlled burns are one of the many tools we use for fire prevention. Not only do they help protect communities from destructive wildfires, they also help maintain healthy ecosystems for native plants and animals. #PrescribedBurn #ControlledBurn #California #CALFIRE #FirePrevention
Check out @calfiresandiego teaching fire safety for the school year! Annually, over 3,000 preschool to fifth grade students are taught about fire and burn prevention with the goal of reducing the number of burn fatalities and injuries involving minors and reducing the number of juvenile fire starts. #FireSafety #CALFIRE #California #FireSafe #School #FirePrevention #BurnPrevention
For first responders, their families, and the team members who support them behind the scenes, it is imperative to address feelings of anxiety and depression before they become overwhelming. Physical illness, injuries, stress, trauma, and other factors—no matter what the job–can contribute to an overall deterioration of behavioral health. #4Mind4Body #MentalHealth #California #CALFIRE
This #MemorialDay, we remember and express our gratitude for all who have served and sacrificed their lives for our country. All gave some and some gave all.

They also showed how we fight fires using fire breaks to help stop the spread of fire and helicopter water drops to slow it. Prevention and quick action are the keys to battling intense blazes this upcoming year! #WildfirePrevention #WildfirePreparedness #ReadyForWildfire #ReadySetGo
Today, is the kickoff of #WildfirePreparednessWeek! During the tragic shooting at the 2017 Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, as gun fire rang out, Fire Apparatus Engineer Christopher Wetzel risked his own life to tend to the wounds of two victims, even using his own body to shield one victim. CAL FIRE is honored to call him one of our own and congratulate him on his well-deserved Gold Medal of Valor. Here he is pictured with one of the victims he helped save. #Heroes #MedalOfValor #CALFIRE #CALIFORNIA #CA #BeyondTheCallOfDuty

This tool for vegetation management is unique but very useful! The heavy ball on the end holds down the chain so that the tractor can drag it across the tall brush, cutting it down and making the terrain easier to manage when prescribed burns happen. #CALFIRE #VegetationManagement #PrescribedBurn #ControlledBurn #California
A Very Pistol, sometimes referred to as a Berry Pistol, allows firefighters to reach areas that are sometimes inaccessible or dangerous so that a prescribed burn can still take place in areas where vegetation management is essential. #VegetationManagement #VeryPistol #BerryPistol #California #CALFIRE
There are a lot of tools that play a valuable role in vegetation management. In the case of prescribed burns, the helitorch helps to cover more area than a drip torch ever could, so that larger areas can be handled more efficiently. #PrescribedBurn #ControlledBurn #Helitorch #CALFIRE #VegetationManagement #California
CAL FIRE is proud to serve the people of California, protecting lives and property in the great state since 1885. #NationalCaliforniaDay #CALFIRE #California #CA #CaliforniaDay
For the rest of February we want to highlight all the tools that make #VegetationManagement possible. Pictured is a firefighter using a drip torch, which is a valuable tool used for prescribed burns. #PrescribedBurns #ControlledBurns #DripTorch #CALFIRE
Timber harvesting is important for the health of the forests and the protection of communities. Trees are chosen for harvest based upon forest levels, density, and spacing, insect and disease conditions, log market value, specific regeneration method for the trees, reforestation need, and strategic fuelbreak and fuel-loading concerns, among other reasons. There really is a science to timber harvesting! #LovingCA #California #VegetationManagement #CALFIRE #Trees
Timber harvesting creates resiliency to fire, insects, and disease by reducing overstocked forest conditions. This leaves the remaining trees with the improved conditions to grow healthy! #LovingCA #California #VegetationManagement #CALFIRE http://calfire.ca.gov/communications/downloads/fact_sheets/ForestPractice.pdf
Did you know that some ecosystems depend on fire to stay healthy? Besides removing hazardous fuels that lead to destructive wildfires, it also removes unwanted species that threaten the species native to the ecosystem. #CALFIRE #VegetationManagement #California #LovingCalifornia #PrescribedBurns #ControlledBurns
Loving California means keeping the land healthy. One of the ways CAL FIRE does this is through #PrescribedBurning. These burns remove the vegetation that may lead to destructive wildfires while also helping to restore nutrients for healthy plant growth in the future. #CALFIRE #VegetationManagement #California #LovingCalifornia
This #ChineseNewYear, we want to wish everyone a festive and fire safe celebration. Attend a professional fireworks show to make sure that fire danger does not get in the way of the fun!

In this 1973 photo, organization and agency leaders informally discuss the professional Foresters Registration for the State of California. At this time, the Professional Foresters Law of 1972, which called for regulation and documentation of professional foresters, was brand new. The law requires all persons who wish to call themselves "professional foresters" or to act in the capacity thereof, to become registered as such through the Office of Professional Foresters Registration. It outlines the guiding principles and responsibilities of Registered Professional Foresters and provides the State with vital professionals who are knowledgeable in developing and carrying out forest management plans. #tbt
