James Corner Field Operations and the Hudson River Park Trust (HRPT) unveiled a preliminary concept for a 5.65-acre park on Gansevoort Peninsula, located between Gansevoort Street and Little West 12th Street in the Meat Packing District. The park replaces a landmass that, until recently, was used by @nycsanitation for truck parking. Built on solid ground, the design creates a habitat that links back to the estuary and connects to the river and local wildlife. At the invitation of the curators of the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Versailles/Biennale d’architecture et de Paysage – Île-de-France, MOS Architects designed and recently constructed School No. 3, The Petite Ecole. The 1,150-square-foot, one-room, open-air pavilion acts as a lab, classroom, and atelier, hosting an architectural education program for local schoolchildren and their families. Plans call for the school to remain indefinitely at the historic Cour de Fontaines of the royal stables of the Château de Versailles, now the home to the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Versailles, which was designed by French Baroque architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart and built between 1679 and 1682. The structure, however, is entirely demountable and its design allows for disassembly, transport to another site, and reassembly. RIP César Pelli, FAIA (1926-2019). On July 19, the world lost another iconic architect when César Pelli, FAIA, died at his home in New Haven at the age of 92. Pelli was the mastermind behind such iconic buildings as the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, which stole the world’s tallest building title from SOM’s Sears Tower when it was completed in 1998, and San Francisco’s tallest building, the 1,070-foot Salesforce Tower. A new park on the shoreline of the Jamaica Bay will turn two acres of undeveloped land into a community beachfront destination. Designed by Quennell Rothschild & Partners ( @qrpartners) for @NYCParks, Bay Breeze Park is located in Rockaway Beach. The design will capitalize on existing site features such as a circular foundation wall, a relic of the site’s industrial past, which will be re-purposed as a seating terrace. The park will also include play and seating areas and kayak access. Anchoring the western edge of the park is a kayak storage building designed by @SageandCoombe. The project is being funded through the FEMA 428 program and is one of 10 FEMA/Jamaica Bay Parks Conservancy funded park spaces that were proposed when the Rockaway Parks Conceptual plan was finalized in 2014. The project is expected to begin construction in fall 2020, and construction is anticipated to be completed by fall 2021. Central Park’s Belvedere Castle, a visitor center located mid-park at 79th Street, reopens today following a major restoration! Central Park co-designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux conceived of the Belvedere in 1858 as a large terrace with pavilions and a miniature castle atop Vista Rock. The U.S. Weather Bureau took occupancy in 1919 and added windows and doors, but moved out of the facility in the early 1960s. Two decades of deterioration and vandalism followed, prompting the Central Park Conservancy to create a comprehensive restoration plan to preserve original elements and recreate lost aspects of the Belvedere’s historic design, while modernizing systems for long-term sustainability. Collaborators include restorations specialists such as Graciano Corporation, Fifty-Three Restorations, Integrated Conservation Resources, and Old Structures Engineering. Last chance to see the exhibition! The Center for Architecture's exhibition "Patchwork: The Architecture of Jadwiga Grabowska-Hawrylak" is closing Saturday, May 18. The first comprehensive presentation of the architect's work outside of Poland came to us from curators Michał Duda and Małgorzata Devosges-Cuber at the Museum of Architecture in Wrocław. The exhibition uses models, films, and photographs to examine the architect’s work during the creation of the new Wrocław. Grabowska-Hawrylak's iconic residential buildings, pictured here in 1982, were built between 1963 and 1969 in Wrocław's Grunwaldzki Square.
