Samuel Williams faced mounting costs in his last year at Cornell, so much so that he decided to forgo a meal plan to save some money. On Saturday, April 13, we hosted the #MambaLeague end of season Tournament Day, the very first in New York, bringing together girls and boys from across the city – from Harlem and South Bronx to Staten Island – to show off their basketball skills and experience the power of play. For the last 8 weeks, our 250 youth participants have learned to play basketball the Kobe Bryant-way, with incredibly dedicated volunteer coaches, age-appropriate equipment like smaller courts and lower basketball hoops, equal girls and boys participation with female coaches for the girls, and – most importantly – a lot of FUN. Last year, in honor of Fannie Lou Hamer's 100th birthday, students at Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School participated in a competition to see who could write the best essay about why the street in front of their school should be renamed Fannie Lou Hamer Street. The local community board was so impressed by Janine Castro's winning essay and her follow-up presentation that they voted yes to renaming the street.
