Glorious summer morning looking forward to jumping in a lake today #summerdays #lakeswimming #summermood #lotuspaintings #paharischool #eighteenthcenturyart #punjabhills GIRLS SWIMMING c 1790. Illustration to the Indian musical mode, Sindhuri Ragini. From the State of Garhwal in Northern India, which lay at the edges of the Punjab hills. Ram Gopal Collection, London. During the 16th century, ragas and raginis—the conventional modes of Indian music—began to be intimately associated with poetry and painting and personified. Here the character of Sindhuri Ragini, a lady of Hindola Raga is suggested by a party of girls swimming in a lotus-pond. The floats which sustain them are empty upturned pitchers, plugged with straw—a device still used in Northern India.

Indian Elections on my mind as the largest singular exercise democracy the world has ever seen comes to a close in 10 days. With over 800 million eligible voters, its magnitude dwarfs popular participation in the west, at a time when the rise of authoritarian power world wide threatens these very principles. This year, at least 600 million people will be casting a vote, over a 5 week election period from April 11-May 19. This photo above of two University of California-Berkeley students protesting Indira Gandhi’s human rights violations in the 1970s reveals exactly how much history does repeat itself. They were even wearing masks so they wouldn’t be identified by the Indian government. Feeling in solidarity and great respect for the amazing activism and art and protests like @postersunite @artistsuniteindia and many more that have been staged in the lead up highlighting attacks on free speech, strangling sedition laws, and everyday brutalities enacted in the name of religious and caste based oppression. With naked tyrants and cannibalizing emperors everywhere you turn, wondering where democracy will take us next. #historyrepeatsitself #elections2019 #riseandresist #EmperorsNewClothes #UnitedAgainstHate #undeclaredemergency #Desaffronise⁣ #stopdistortinghistory #NonMajoritarian #RegimeChange #RightToDissent #notinmyname #studentprotest #protest #indianradicalismliveson

Getting much joy out of looking at these photographs taken in the 1930s of children exploring and reveling in art. Amazing to consider their beauty in light of political realities-concurrent with segregation, right before Japanese Internment. Variously dubbed the first / longest on-screen kiss, the image reflects the more open attitude on the part of both actresses and industry of pre-independent India to on-screen intimacy. #Fridaymood and also my part time spirit animal. Cat Dancer, 2018. ******************<>*********************** Delighted to be showing this and other works in An Opera for Animals at Para Site, Hong Kong. The exhibition will be on view from March 2- June 9, 2019 & travel to the Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai from June 22- August 25, 2019. "Opera" has been used as the name to describe various traditions of performance, social arrangement, entertainment, and spiritual work from around the world. Many of these are ancient and radically different from each other but are nevertheless classified as regional variants of the (relatively young) Western model, bringing into discussion the status of opera as the highest art form, reflecting the European colonial project. There is an almost perfect chronological overlap between the golden age of Western opera and Europe’s occupation of most of the world, at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th. As such, the exhibition understands opera and related issues such as "staging" and "operatic environment" broadly, as terms describing the synthetic landscapes imagined and generated in our world today. Equally, the animal spirit connects the still very present ancient beliefs with a highly futuristic fear of new forms of irrationality and intelligence colonising our future. The world of technology continues to draw influence from the unique characteristics of certain animal species, enforcing this connection. This exhibition explores the way in which the future is now projected less as the rational thinking commonly remembered from the post-war era - advanced machinery, design, and social forms - but once more as a place of amorphous fear, of animals that might take over in artificial landscapes. The future it seems, will again be an opera for animals. Curated by Cosmin Costinas @cosmincostinas and Claire Shea. Hours: Wed-Sun, 12:00-7:00pm. AND EXTENDED HOURS for 25 -31 MARCH: Mon-Sun, 10:00-20:00 #parasiteHK #spiritanimals #dakini #dakinimagic #powerofpleasure #worksonpaper #operaforanimals

The beginning of spring always makes me think of our annual outings to the Cherry Blossom Festival at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, ever since I can remember. On this day February 19 in 1923 the U.S. Supreme Court voted UNANIMOUSLY to bar South Asians from becoming American citizens and to denaturalize those who had already done so in the landmark decision, United States v. Bhagat Singh Thind (who lost his 5 yr struggle for citizenship.) #somanythings — Whenever I think about why there were so few desis in American public life when I was growing up, I realize how deeply structural racism and xenophobic laws affected this lack of visibility for generations —it was of course not just “Hindoos”, but South Asians of all religions. 1. Photo of Bhagat Singh Thind with his son and dog. Thind, who immigrated to US in 1913, even trained at Camp Lewis in Washington to fight with the U.S. Army in World War I. He begun his struggle for citizenship in 1918. In its 1923 decision, the Supreme Court quashed the hopes of Thind and fellow South Asians in the US to gain full recognition as American citizens. It was not until 1946, more than two decades later, that South Asians were again allowed the right of citizenship. 2. Map of the Asiatic Barred Zone. The actual area is much larger that what you see in pink. It excluded parts of China and Japan, because the existing Chinese Exclusion Act (passed in 1882) and the Gentlemen’s Agreement of 1907 had ALREADY prevented people from those countries from immigrating to the US. This racism and xenophobia that triggered the exclusion of Chinese and Japanese immigrants from the United States is well documented. From the 20th century on, white nationalists on the West Coast fought against the arrival of immigrants from the South Asian subcontinent. 3. They argued that new migrants, labeled “Hindus” or “Hindoos” (despite the fact that a majority of the incoming migrants were Sikhs or Muslims), were the newest incarnation of the ongoing Asian “problem” that faced the United States. At the time of the creation of the barred zone then, Congress was more concerned about “The Tide of Turbans,” and “yellow peril” with origins in China, Japan, and India, than it was in immigration from the Middle East. #thisisamerica #wewerealwayshere now #historyrepeatsitself #nowall #intersectionality 🙏🏾#saada

Looking at the New York Times roundup of ‘Notable Deaths in 2018’, I saw some names that caught my eye, and others who were missing from the list. Here some people I have been thinking about this year and lately: whose work I honor, whose practices will continue to inspire, who have deeply moved me with their commitment and generosity, on whose shoulders I stand, whom I wish I had met earlier and known longer. Condolences to the loved ones who survive them. Left to right, top to bottom: * Peggy Cooper Cafritz, philanthropist & patron of the arts (1947-2018) Krishna Reddy, master printmaker (1925-2018) Jack Whitten, painter (1939-2018) Shirin Aliabadi, photographer (1973-2018) Mastanamma, world’s oldest celebrity chef & youtube sensation (1911-2018) James Luna, installation and performance artist (1950-2018) Tushar Joag, mixed media installation artist (1966-2018) Shan Goshorn, weaver and activist (1957-2018) Kanishka Raja, painter (1969-2018) * #peggycoopercafritz #krishnareddy #jackwhitten #shirinaliabadi #mastanamma #jamesluna #tusharjoag #shangoshorn #conceptualpainting #blackabstraction #southasiancontemporaryart #comradesinart #intersectionality #radicalcraft #nativeamericanartists #masterprintmaker
