Great contrast against a sandy bottom hey! 🦈 There were several of these grey reef sharks cruising around us at @cocoskeelingislands on our photo tour the other week.

chrisbrayphotography

Who knew? Giant stick insects on Christmas Island?! =) So cool! 😍 Macro lens time!

chrisbrayphotography

How cute is this grinning grey reef shark? Such a happy chappy! I would be too if I was a shark living on @cocoskeelingislands

chrisbrayphotography

There’s a quiet, sheltered spot just offshore on tropical paradise of @christmasisland where all the locals go to filet their fish (mostly wahoo and tuna) - and the local GT’s (Giant Trevally) know about it. Dozens of these massive dark fish patrol the area, racing up to ominously shadow every boat that comes by, hoping for a free feed. Throw a scrap and these incredible fish take off after it, already waiting where it hits the water where it then instantly disappears in an explosion of whitewater. It’s pretty amazing to see, and even more impressive when viewed from underwater! Would you get in?

chrisbrayphotography

The Horn-eyed Ghost Crab has pretty sharp eyes 🤣 and they usually sprint away as soon as they see you approach - but this girl just stood her ground and let me get super close and low for this shot last week on Cocos Keeling Island during our annual photo tour. Such great eyes hey! @bbcearth @cocoskeelingislands

chrisbrayphotography

Ancient giant clams like this monster more than a meter wide are getting harder and harder to find. Locals believe this may be one of the only ones left in the atoll lagoon at @cocoskeelingislands but what a beauty it is! Big enough to trap a diver’s arm inside if you were silly enough to try and reach inside! It’s probably never actually happened but I remember reading and being told tales about that kind of thing when I was a kid, growing up sailing around the world with my family on our home made sailboat for 5 years. I’ve always had a healthy respect for giant clams! Haha. I took this last week on our cocos keeling island photo tour. Thanks to our tour guest Raquel for modeling!

chrisbrayphotography

Freshly blow-dried by the ocean breeze and warmed by the sun while he waits in paradise for another delivery of fresh fish from his parents, this adorable baby brown booby on @christmasisland really does have a lot to smile about!

chrisbrayphotography

With their frenzied fight frozen in time, the chaos of these feeding reef sharks almost appears as a graceful ballet. @lumix @cocoskeelingislands

chrisbrayphotography

This pretty little skink is extinct in the wild, but thanks to extraordinary efforts by dedicated teams at @parksaustralia here on @christmasisland - there are now over 1,000 blue-tailed skinks in their breeding centre, with plans now progressing for release back into the wild. Our photo tour group here this week were lucky enough to be shown through the facility and pitch in for a few hours helping out with egg-checking, feeding etc. Pretty special!

chrisbrayphotography

Is there any better start to a day than drifting through crystal-clear, warm seas filled with coral and fish?

chrisbrayphotography

Some spinner dolphins swinging by for a closer look on our snorkel yesterday here on @christmasisland

chrisbrayphotography

The end of another day in paradise here on Christmas Island. Yesterday was the first full day on our annual C.I. photo tour and our 8 guests are loving it here. We had a presentation by @parksaustralia on the islands amazing endemic species and research projects, followed by an amazing opportunity to help out with their breeding program for the ‘extinct in the wild’ blue tailed skink, feeding them, checking for eggs etc. We went snorkeling in the afternoon, did a sunset shoot and finished up with a hearty dinner at the Golden Bosun. Not a bad way to start the photo tour! @lumix

chrisbrayphotography

Just stumbled upon this silhouetted ele shot in my files that I don’t think I ever picked out. Way to much saturation, dehaze and other stuff going on, but... I kinda like it? Do you? 😜Still 2 spots left for our Kenya photo tour this September if you want to take a better one yourself!

chrisbrayphotography

Too slow! The Giant Trevally are explosively fast to react when fishermen throw their scraps into the water around here @Christmasisland making the silky sharks appear cumbersome - until a bigger fish frame is discarded that the GTs can’t swallow and race off with in one go - then, once the shark arrives, you realize who’s boss! @lumix

Back from a morning snorkel here on Christmas Island... the usual spinner dolphins and fish everywhere! We’re getting ready to run our annual 1-week photo tour here in a few weeks starting on 30th April. Still two spots left if you’d like to start your mornings off like this too before learning how to photograph the island’s amazing birds, crabs, blowholes, sunsets etc! 😉🐠🐬 Come and take a quick break with Jess and I on our paradise island home! 🏝 @christmasisland

chrisbrayphotography

Know anyone who needs a bear hug this weekend? 🙂 Tag them in! #love Or, if you want to come with Jess and I to our favorite secret spots in Alaska this August to photograph bears, otters, puffins, seals, whales, glaciers and more in real life, there’s just two spots left on our Best of Alaska photo tour - just our little group of 8 guests exploring at our leisure bases from our private expedition ship. I can’t wait! If you’d like to come, drop me an email or check out the details on our website. #onceinalifetime

Sixty million years ago, a volcanic seamount rose 5,000 meters from the crushing depths of the Indian Ocean, piercing the sapphire-blue surface to give birth to a tiny, emerald island. A genuine ‘Lost World’, rimmed by impenetrable sea-cliffs and inhabited by bizarre birds and animals found nowhere else on Earth, Christmas Island was named on Christmas Day 1643 by a passing ship, yet somehow avoided thorough exploration until 1887 when a small party of British explorers first made their way through the dense inland jungle collecting specimens. Having traveled to many of the world’s most amazing places for the last decade for our photo tours, my wife Jess and I now call this tropical paradise home, where @parksaustralia invited us to build our luxury eco-lodge @swelllodge on the coastline in their national park. If Christmas Island isn’t on your bucket list, it should be! PS - I took this pano shot from my drone an hour ago and just had to share! 😉👍@awesomelife.style @australiangeographic @australia @christmasisland

Sometimes my journeys have lead to interesting photos, but my photos have sure lead me to some interesting journeys!!! Here’s a couple of shots of me ‘in the field’ over the last decade and a half which I just dug out for @australiangeographic - good times! 📷 Thanks to my adventure buddies including my wife Jess, Clark Carter, Jasper Timm and my trusty tripod & self-timer for capturing some of these memories.

The largest land animal in the world - the African Elephant. 🐘 If you’ve not been to Africa and experienced what it’s like to be so close to such an incredible animal in the wild, you really must add it to your bucket list! Not to mention all the other amazing animals including leopards, lions, rhinos, cheetah, hippos, giraffes and so many others that we bring our little group of 8 photo tour guests to enjoy and photograph in their natural environment for 2 weeks every September in Kenya! There’s only 2 spots left for this year’s trip - send me a message if you’re keen to come with us, or read all about it on our website. @bbcearth @discover.earth

This Hawk-Owl (or Boobook) is one of Australia’s rarest raptors, found only on @christmasisland - with an estimated 500 breeding pairs remaining. They have a very distinctive, loud territorial call however, so it’s not uncommon to hear one at night when outdoors around here - the hard part is finding one and then managing to get a clear photo of it! This one was super cooperative, just at a local park! They mostly feed on large insects but eat the odd gecko, rat and even small birds like the Christmas Island white-eye.

chrisbrayphotography

Don’t be fooled by its cute face, the Wolf Snake has been responsible for several extinctions here on Christmas Island since its introduction in 1987. Still needing to take a few new photos of some of the invasive species around here for the article I’m writing for conservation magazine @mondbergemagazin , I found one and took these shots. Which photo should I submit? Only reaching about 75cm and harmless to humans, the wolf snake is a specialist reptile-eater and feasted its way across the island’s endemic and native reptile fauna in a measurable population wave initiating from the shipping port over the course of approximately 25 years. In late 2009 and early 2010 a group conservationists ventured to the furthest corner of the island where the snake had not yet reached and caught 67 endemic blue-tailed skinks to initiate a captive breeding program. When they went back to collect more in June 2010 they had vanished and now exist only in a captive breeding program. Lister’s gecko was last seen in the wild in 2012 and also exists now only in the island’s breeding centre. Sadly the same cannot be said for the Christmas Island forest skink, which was driven to complete extinction: The last living specimen died in captivity on 31st May 2014 while waiting for a breeding partner to be found, only days after our photo tour group had marveled at its beauty in the breeding centre. The loss of the forest skink is the first Australian native reptile known to have become extinct since European colonisation. Our endemic shrew was last seen in the wild in 1985, and our two unique rat species were wiped out by an infectious parasite arriving with the black rat in 1899, leaving just two species of bat as the only surviving endemic mammal species. One of these, the Christmas Island Pipistrelle - a tiny insectivorous bat - sadly went extinct in 2009 (likely primarily also due to the advance of the wolf snake), leaving the Christmas Island Flying Fox as the sole surviving native mammal from an original five species. No island in the world has ever managed to rid itself of an introduced snake. Please take bio-security and quarantine measures seriously when traveling! @lumix

Meet the Robber Crab - the largest land-living invertebrate on Earth! These prehistoric, alien-like giants have a leg span of up to 1m, weigh 4kgs and live to an astounding 80-100 years old! With a highly-developed sense of smell, their favorite food is coconut which they effortlessly crack into with their formidable claws, but they are quick to grab an unwary Christmas Island red crab too - or just scavenge their crushed red remains on the road after dark. Unfortunately this habit leads to them sometimes becoming road-kill themselves. They are a protected species on Christmas Island and a hefty $5,500 AUD fine exists for killing a Coconut Crab which acts as a great incentive not to accidently hit one - or deliberately eat one. Their flavor has lead to their near-extinction on most other tropical islands, but Christmas Island is proud to host the world’s densest population, and it’s not uncommon to have to get out of the car and bravely usher a dozen or more Coconut Crabs off the road on your way home at night. This colourful beast blocked my road this evening while I was out trying to photograph the islands ‘yellow crazy ant’ that’s causing some conservation dramas here at the moment. I need a photo of a yellow crazy ant farming a scale insect for an article I’m writing for the beautiful German conservation mag @mondbergemagazin - however this Robber Crab (aka Coconut Crab) was way more cooperative and photogenic (and slow) compared to the crazy ants! I’ll have to go back and try again with the ants tomorrow! Haha. @christmasisland @australia @lumix @bbcearth @australiangeographic @destination.earth #earthpix

Dolphins! No matter how many times we come across dolphins while snorkeling here on Christmas Island (pretty common!) it’s always such an amazing experience! This pod of 70-100 spinner dolphins were pretty active and super vocal - so many squeaks and clicks! Some were busy corralling up fish to eat, others mating, many were just cruising past at depth, some came over to check us out, and still others raced off to the front of the @ci_fishingadventure boat to play in the bow-wave! Another great morning in the water here at @christmasisland @australia - we still have 2 spots left in our 1-week photo tour of this incredible island in May this year if anyone’s keen?

The heaviest land animal on Earth, weighing upwards of 6 tons and standing over 3m tall, a bull African elephant is a sight to behold! I flipped the screen out on my camera and reached way down out of the vehicles window to get the camera as low as possible to make this guy loom even taller. I think it helped that the savannah was super open and flat just here in the Massai Mara too with nothing in the background but blue sky and clouds. Some acacia trees would have helped set the scene and maybe added interest but would have cluttered the background and made the elephant less distinct? What do you think? . . . . . @lumix @destination.earth @bbcearth #Destination.earth #awesomelife.style @awesomelife.style #earthfocus @epicexplorepage #phototour #wildlife @wildlife @wildlifefriend #nature #ourplanetdaily #earthmood #instagood #photooftheday #picoftheday #instadaily #travel #africananimals #elephant @magicalkenya #africa #massaimara

King of Beasts. If you wait long enough, just sometimes, these incredibly lazy animals might lift their head from sleeping position just long enough for a quick photo. Sitting ashore in Alaska we were watching these two brown bear brothers sitting side by side catching salmon... every now and again they’d get bored and start playing with each other like this, mock-fighting and chasing each other around before going back to fish some more. Towards the end of the day though, one caught a big fish as it swam past which the other had started chasing first, and then tempers did actually flare. . . . . . @lumix @destination.earth @bbcearth #Destination.earth #awesomelife.style @awesomelife.style #earthfocus @epicexplorepage #phototour #wildlife @wildlife @wildlifefriend #nature #ourplanetdaily #earthmood #instagood #photooftheday #picoftheday #instadaily #travel #amazing #alaska #bear #fighting #brownbear

Sometimes called ‘Wolves of the Sea’ for their relentless pack hunting of large mammals (including the largest, Blue whales) swimming with and watching these orca deftly and delicately pick up individual herring last week I was reminded of similarly skillful, accurate fish hunting I’ve witnessed from actual wolves in Alaska: while the huge bears thundered around missing most of the fish, the wolves almost never missed, their perfect timing and precision bite retrieving one salmon after another. I’m in awe of all wolves, both land and sea. . . . . . @lumix @destination.earth @bbcearth #Destination.earth #awesomelife.style @awesomelife.style #earthfocus @epicexplorepage #phototour #wildlife @wildlife @wildlifefriend #nature #ourplanetdaily @northernnorway @visitnorway #norway #orca #wolvesofthesea

Suddenly just in front of Jess’s boat beside us, the ocean started to boil over with herring erupting from the water, closely followed a second later by a surge of 6 huge humpback whales, all mouths agape, engulfing everything before them as they rose through the chaos of skittering fish, closed their mouths and sank back into the water to slowly squeeze the tones of seawater back out through their sieve-like plates of baleen hanging from their upper jaw, and swallow the oil-laden fish. Once safely in their bellies, this pod - like all the other countless pods doing exactly the same all around us in the fjord - these whales would take a few more breaths as they cruised around searching out the next concentration of fish before all showing their tails signaling they were diving deep ready to all rush to the surface together once more for another mouthful of seafood. The trick was where to point the camera as they could surface anywhere... just wait for those herring to start leaping out of the way.... . . . . . @lumix @destination.earth @bbcearth #Destination.earth #awesomelife.style @awesomelife.style #earthfocus @epicexplorepage #phototour #wildlife @wildlife @wildlifefriend #nature #ourplanetdaily @northernnorway @visitnorway #whales

Having a whale of a time here in Arctic Norway!

chrisbrayphotography

Look what we stumbled upon swimming between islands here in the frigid arctic waters of northern Norway?! Reindeer! About 10 of them. Never seen that before! They are surprisingly strong swimmers! The temp dropped below zero a few hours later - I wonder if their dripping coats formed icicles, tinkling like wind chimes as they headed inland? Great Aurora Borealis the other night here in northern Norway! I never realised just how bright and dynamic these Northern Lights can be! Arcing and morphing - literally dancing - across the sky as you watch. We did some great timelapse series with our photo tour guests, but even in real-time it's amazing how fast it changes. It's so fast actually that you need to try and use as short a shutter speed as you can (still needs at least about 10 sec though) in order to 'freeze' the shape, otherwise after say 30 seconds it has smeared itself around too much! . . . . . @lumix @destination.earth @bbcearth #Destination.earth #awesomelife.style @awesomelife.style #earthfocus @epicexplorepage #phototour #wildlife @wildlife @wildlifefriend #nature #ourplanetdaily @travel.norway @visitnorway @northernnorway #aurora #northernlights
