Out gay City Council Speaker Corey Johnson faces an uphill battle in his quest to fundraise against his — to date — deeper pocketed rivals in the race for mayor in 2021, but his grassroots, people-powered approach appears to be paying off. Johnson, who is capping donations at $250 and has vowed to reject donations from lobbyists, corporate PACs, and real estate developers, has outraised City Comptroller Scott Stringer and, apparently, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr., in the most recent filing period encompassing January through July of this year. The speaker pulled in $375,628 in net contributions from 2,616 donors during that period, according to campaign finance data.

On July 12, 2009 I drank & used drugs for the last time. It was a Sunday night & after drinking all day & being offered drugs by some friends at a club that night — I woke up the next morning hung over & with a pit in my stomach. I went to work on that Monday morning & could barely stay awake at my desk. I remember blowing my nose & the tissues were full of blood. I had dinner with a friend that evening & he ordered a drink and asked if I wanted one. I said no. And then I said to him: “Adam, I think I need to stop drinking & using.” He said: “Do you think you can?” Honestly, I wasn’t sure. I wasn’t a daily drinker or drug user. I didn’t keep alcohol in my apartment. I was a binge drinker and for me it led to ABC (Alcohol Becomes Cocaine). That Monday night after dinner I went home and admitted to myself that alcohol and drugs were detrimentally effecting my friendships, my potential, my happiness and most importantly my relationship with my family. I remember crying when the honest admission washed over me. I called a bunch of friends who were sober but it was late at night. A friend in LA answered my call and when I told him (through tears and fear) how I was feeling - he told me I would be okay and to call him the next day and he would connect me with some folks who could help me. I woke up the next morning and thinking: “Oh, I overreacted. Everything is fine.” But then, in a moment of grace and clarity, I had this thought: REMEMBER HOW YOU FELT LAST NIGHT. I was a mess in my early recovery. But I kept at it a day at a time. A lot has happened in 10 years: there have been moments of falling in love, having my father die, having my heart broken, running for office, the birth of my nephew and so many other ups and downs. But no matter what happened; good or bad - I never picked up a drink or a drug. My sobriety is something that needs to be separate from the peaks and valleys of life. I don’t drink, no matter what. Anyway, July 13th is my sobriety date. I’m 37 years old. I’ve been sober longer than I drank and used. It’s my biggest accomplishment... (Continued in comments)...

When I was a depressed, closeted teenager growing up in a small town, I never imagined that one day I’d be an openly gay elected official in the greatest city in the world. I still pinch myself on incredible days like today. In that spirit of gratitude and humility, I will ask: are you able to chip in $10 to my potential Mayoral campaign? -> link in bio

It was such a pleasure to meet with Senator @elizabethwarren to discuss the many serious issues facing the nation and NYC. She was fun, thoughtful, wonky and inspiring. It was also great to do it at the LGBT Center ( @lgbtcenternyc) — a historic institution for the LGBT movement.
My mom Ann is my rock, and my best friend. I feel really lucky she could be at my State of the City speech today to introduce me.
New York City’s mass transit system was intentionally designed so that no one has to take responsibility, and so everyone can point their finger at someone else. It’s time for that to come to an end. It’s time for accountability. It’s time for #MunicipalControl of our mass transit. #LetsGoNYC
I’m delivering my first State of the City address today at noon at @laguardiacc. I hope you’ll tune in! You’ll be able to find the livestream on my Twitter, Facebook and the NYC Council website.
Don’t look into the ☀️and as Baz Luhrmann said - Wear Sunscreen...
Congrats to @repocasiocortez on a beautiful inauguration today! Thanks for inviting me to be part of it and thanks for leading with empathy, compassion and a deep sense of humanity for others. Don’t stop being you! PS - I loved talking about the finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
