@newportfolkfest I don’t think i can do this experience justice in an Instagram caption, but I’ll try. This was easily one of the most special shows of our lives. Having old friends (and some new ones!) singing and playing songs from a record we made 10 years ago and having this audience embrace us to the extent that you all did for a bunch of old ass songs is something that fills our hearts beyond what we thought possible. Thank you so much to our guests too! @johnjmccauley @themikeviola @nongmopaleovapedaddy420 @hissgoldenmessenger @jasonisbell @benmonttench @iamyolaofficial @lakestreetdive @preshallband for sharing your wild talents and making us feel like the luckiest band on the planet. Sorry not everyone is pictured - just going off of what folks have posted and I was itching to talk about it...@newportfolkfest - thanks for helping make this moment a reality
There is finally some keycussion for sale. Brought to you by Wiffin Gelbsmith. You can find it at Nelson’s drum shop in Nashville for his reopening.
We’re celebrating 10 years of our first record, North Hills, with a 10th Anniversary Edition deluxe vinyl reissue. The limited edition vinyl will include 2 red LPs, a bonus 7” with two unreleased tunes, expanded artwork, a promo poster from 2009, and more. A portion of the proceeds will go to @silverlake_conservatory. Link in bio for details & to pre-order!

Thank you Bloomington IL! Last night was a fun one. @forecastlefest - see you later today!
We’re in Minneapolis tonight at basilica block party. Tomorrow the 13th at the castle theater in Bloomington il. And at forecastle fest the next night night in Louisville. If you see this guy tell him to stop stealing my phone and taking photos of himself with it.
It might not be totally obvious but that’s Phil Lesh peeping our set from the side of the stage.
Europe! Tickets are on sale now for our fall tour. Where will we see you? UK, it’s been a little time. Should we come back for a visit?
Happy 1st to Passwords. Seems that the month of June was a hotbed of Dawes album releases. Maybe we can work to get a record’s birthday for every day of the month.
What’s good in Germany?
Way back to the first time Griff and I got busted for sneaking into the first Matrix
Also thinking about stopping by Switzerland. Has anybody been?
Meet Taylor’s Guitars Ep. 3 - There were a lot of votes for all the guitars, and I promise to get to em all, but this one seemed to get the most votes this time around. The ‘69 Gold Top Les Paul. Got it right before we recorded Passwords, so you can hear it on there quite a bit (at least insofar that there are electric guitars on that record) - particularly on Living In The Future. Then it quickly became a touring mainstay...although it’s really fucking heavy so I can’t run around like an idiot with it for more than 3 or 4 songs at a time. I still feel like my playing is best suited for a Tele though, so this guitar sometimes changes the way I play, which I really appreciate...I feel like guitars - the pickups, the neck, the set up, the wood itself - kind of tell you how it needs to be played, despite whatever intentions you may have had. Do other guitar players feel this way? Or am I alone on this one? Anyway, it’s definitely as pretty as a guitar gets. I feel like the image of rock n’ roll guitar that a lot of people had when they were a kid was a strat...for me it was definitely always a Gold Top.
Who’s in Spain these days? Thinking of making a trip...
I know it’s been a minute....but which of these guitars would you wanna hear about next? -TG
Happy Father’s Day to papa goldsmith. Forever an inspiration to us
Happy 8th to Nothing Is Wrong
Dr John - we love you so so so so much. Thank you for everything you were and will always be. Rest In Peace
Me and Griff are out here workin on someone else’s record...
Hard to believe it has been 4 years since we released All Your Favorite Bands
Found a page of titles for unwritten songs from several years ago...Some of these are pretty questionable and I can’t think of how they could have sounded like good ideas at the time. Look close and you’ll see a couple that ended up getting written though.
Another nerd alert...sorry to those who this inevitably annoys...but I’ve been appreciating all your guys’ comments on those book posts. So I wanted to show you my favorite used bookstore in LA - @aliasbookseast. There are a lot of good spots here (Iliad, Stories, Counterpoint, The Last Bookstore etc.) but this one is special for me. Touring has actually become the perfect way to find the best local spots. I’m looking for the weird, rare, cool stuff. Obviously there’s the rare room in @strandbookstore in NYC and @powellsbooks in Portland but other favorites of mine are @literarity in El Paso @captainsbookshelf in Asheville #hermitagebooks in Denver @socobooks in Austin... Please tell me all your favorite spots I should get to. I’m hoping to be revisiting this post a lot... - TG
This is kinda a repost but not really. I posted about this guitar when I got it over a couple years ago. I then used it on a fair amount of Passwords (this is the main acoustic on ‘Time Flies Either Way’)...but now I find myself not really reaching for it as much as it deserves to be reached for. There’s also an amp I wanna get before we start working on @mandymooremm’s new music. Long story short - does anyone wanna buy this from me? I won’t ask for more than I myself paid. The only thing is I kinda wanna sell it to someone here in LA...A lot goes into shipping a nice guitar and I don’t wanna risk it. The pictures were put in by what I imagine what’s it’s original owner (C.L. Foster perhaps?). Looks like “KIM” is carved into the side over and over as well. It’ll come with a pretty good case. DM me if interested! - TG (UPDATE: Looks like Kim has SOLD already)
Alright, I’m going in! Not making any promises to myself though. Lemme know if anyone has any advice or guidance on what to look for or be mindful of as I get into it. Or if you know any articles, essays, podcasts etc. that gives some good perspective (cc: @themikeviola)...P.S. those two Faulkner novels were incredible and I ended up buying Light In August, Absalom! Absalom! and Soldier’s Pay...but they’ll have to wait a little while - TG
Last night Griff and I had the honor of celebrating Mavis Staples’ 80th birthday at the Ace Theater here in LA with all of these badasses. She is such an incredible inspiration and we were so grateful to be a part of it all! Thanks for having us!
LA! - come to the hotel cafe this Saturday for this!!!! Hope to see you there!!
So stoked to be playing drums with William Tyler on Friday at Zebulon. He’s special to me -Griff
Our little run through Raleigh, Greenville and Knoxville has come to an end and it was a special batch of shows for us. The venues always a little more beautiful, the turnouts always a little higher. I know I say it a lot, but it’s never lost on us how lucky we are to be able to do what we do. To play whatever songs we wanna play and to always be embraced so warmly from the first note to the last. Thank you guys for making it all happen. For sticking by us for so long at this point. We won’t ever be able to repay you but we will keep trying at every single show. See some of you in a few more weeks! 📷 by @adventuresofliz
Thanks to all the folks that recommended this. The Sound And The Fury blew me away from start to finish. Didn’t think this one was gonna feel darker and sadder, but it does...at least so far. Please leave any of your tips, tricks and take-aways for reading this bad boy along with more recommendations in the comments...they’re always very much appreciated. - TG

Just got our logo thanks to @knuckles.eisner. So stoked! Any one that wants to get this tattooed will have a matching tat with me. More to come soon working on it
Happy Birthday to this wonderful human being - our rock, our Zen Master, our joint roller, our guitar builder, Griff’s groove brother and personal bully, our local repair guy, the brightest part of any email chain or group text, the funniest man any of us have ever known - Wylie Quinn Gelber @gelberandsons
Keycussion prototypes are here! It’s part drum key and it’s part percussion instrument. It’s that patent that we posted a few weeks ago!
Did you think we were done? We’re never done. More An Evening With Dawes: Passwords Tour dates announced this summer! Tickets on sale this Friday.
Meet Taylor’s Guitars ep. 2.....Behold the Radocaster. It is the first of its kind. Built by bassist Wylie Gelber himself. The pickups are a vintage DiMarzio and a Teisco Gold Foil. A lot of the basses you see him playing these days are also ones that he built. It first joined the family right after we finished recording WAGD but it became a mainstay on that tour. One of maybe 3 that I know I could run a whole show with if I had to. This is also the electric guitar you’re hearing on most of Passwords...Feed The Fire, Telescope, the solo on Living In The Future, the slide on Crack The Case and Greatest Invention and I’m sure some more that I’m forgetting...you may already know this from past posts, but he’s making a lot more now and recently started selling them. Look up @gelberandsons if you’re interested...I couldn’t recommend them highly enough...
