In this particular work, detail of: “The Birth of Toussaint L’Ouverture” - on the twentieth of May, 1853, Francois Dominique Toussant was born. Both of Toussaint’s parents were slaves. His mother worked on the Breda plantation. His father, an African educated by the Jesuits, taught young Toussaint to read and speak French. PaJaMa-an acronym for Paul-Jared-Margaret, was a collaboration between the artists #paulcadmus #jaredfrench and #margaretfrench and their friends within their social circle. Saturday here at @dcmooregallery and we are enjoying our new exhibition ‘Jacob Lawrence: The Life of Toussaint L'Ouverture’ in our second gallery. Here is one work from the entire exhibition - The Capture. Toussaint captured the town of Marmelade in 1795. In a fierce battle against the French, Toussaint forced an opening in their ranks to gain a victory. After that battle, he took the name L’Ouverture, which means “the opener.” Toussaint’s well-organized fighters were a match for even the highly trained French soldiers.
