Conservationists have been warning for some time that giraffe populations are experiencing alarming declines and urgently require improved protections. This week, the US finally announced that it will review their status and consider listing the giraffe under the Endangered Species Act. This is long overdue – a listing would provide crucial funding for conservation work & limit US imports and trade of giraffe parts. The US, on average, imports more than one giraffe trophy a day. #giraffes #conservation #endangered #EndangeredSpeciesAct

#Repost @beverlyjoubert ・・・ We haven’t been in the area recently but wanted to update all of you who are asking about #lostcub. We’ve had lovely news that the little one is doing really well - being groomed by Fekeetsa, playing & being allowed to feed. You wouldn’t know by looking at her that she’s an ‘outsider’. It's a first for us to see such total integration in the lion world but all credit to her determined little soul for refusing to give up! #okavangolions #fekeetsa #littlebigcats #lions

It’s been an incredible and truly surprising story to follow. A tiny lion cub that somehow ended up with the wrong pride – and won protection and comfort within this highly dangerous situation. She continues to hold her own and we continue to observe with amazement. #Repost @beverlyjoubert ・・・ A wild pangolin sighting, like this one in the Okavango, is a rare privilege – we’ve only ever seen about 10. Here, the mammal’s impressive scales are clearly visible: they make up some 20% of a pangolin’s body weight. They work as protection against predators, but all a poacher needs to do is scoop up a tightly rolled animal and head to market. Like rhino horn, pangolin scales are made of keratin. And now poachers are targeting all eight species of this endangered mammal worldwide for meat (it’s considered a delicacy) and scales (for traditional medicines). Over 40 tonnes of pangolin products have been seized in just two months. Protecting wild spaces and species becomes ever more important. And education is still one of the best ways to fight back. #WorldPangolinDay #OutOfControl #MyScalesAreNotMedicine #whenthebuyingstopsthekillingcantoo

This #Thanksgiving, we take a moment to reflect on a remarkable year made possible by you: our supporters, partners and friends of the Great Plains Foundation. Together we achieved a remarkable milestone in #RhinosWithoutBorders, having saved a total of 87 rhinos from the cross-hairs of poachers by moving and releasing them to the expansive wilderness of Botswana, and witnessing the birth of 22 rhino calves. Together we instilled a sense of pride in the natural heritage of local young people in Kenya and Botswana. Together we watched as once skittish lions and elephants returned to the Sapi Reserve in Zimbabwe. Together we made an impact for conservation in Africa. It is days like today that we take stock of the incredible journey a year can be and the accomplishments achieved through a shared vision. Thank you for sharing Great Plains’s vision for a brighter future for Africa’s wild places. #conservation #goodnewsconservation #wildlife #rhinos

On this day in 1914, the world lost its very last known passenger pigeon, Martha. A species once supremely abundant vanished forever due to our actions. Like the stories of other 'endlings' – the last individuals of a lineage – this one is a reminder of what's at stake as we fight to prevent the extinctions of the future. Around 90% of Africa's elephants have been lost in the past century – mainly to supply the ivory trade. We will not stand by while the last remaining herds are carved up for meaningless trinkets. #Ivory belongs to #elephants. #WorldElephantDay #KillTheTrade #IvoryBan

#Repost @beverlyjoubert ・・・ Staring straight into the amber eyes of a lion will always awaken a part of me that knows instinctively that I am not the true predator here. And yet - people's amazing ability with tools and intelligence has made our species stronger by far and we are outcompeting every other predator on the planet. Lions are iconic - strong and proud and symbols of power throughout the world. But there are now more statues of lions in the world than there are real lions. Only around 20 000 remain, scattered in ever-smaller patches of wilderness. It's worth noting this decline this #WorldLionDay but also noting that we have the ability to halt and reverse it when we put our minds to it. Nine years ago, together with @dereckjoubert, and National Geographic, we set up the Big Cats Initiative as a long-term effort to halt the declineof big cats in the wild. The initiative supports efforts to save big cats through assessment, on-the-ground conservation, education, and global public-awareness campaigns. To date, this has supported more than 110 innovative projects in 28 countries that are helping big cats and communities thrive - all working to keep these wild eyes alight across Africa, ready to pierce our souls with the truth about who we really are. Last year we couldn’t make the #NatGeoFest due to a certain herbivore. It’s wonderful being back amongst so many inspiring and driven people all with the common goal of fixing the wrongs of the world. It’s an honour to share this space with you and thank you all for the incredible support during those difficult days last year. It helped more than you’ll know. Thanks to @joelsartore for the photo. Another species that you’ve documented for #PhotoArk! What number is this?
