“Vitaleta Dawn” A popular and beautiful spot on the way from San Quirico d’Orcia to Pienza in southern Tuscany, Italy, is the Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta. Built in 1590, the chapel was redesigned in the renaissance style by architect Giuseppe Partini in 1884. This shot is from a field by the road, but there is a lovely walk via the chapel to Pienza. The aesthetics of the architecture and sculptured countryside are best admired in spring, where the greens and golds and yellows are the colours of the dawn. #vitaletadawn #cappella #vitaleta #sanquiricodorcia #pienza #valdorcia #yellow #dawn #tuscany #toscana #tuscanygram #visittuscany #discovertuscany #landscapephotography #travelphotography #italy #🇮🇹

“Colours of Riisitunturi” Polar night occurs in the northern and southern extremities of the planet when the sun stays below the horizon for 24 hours. In the most extreme longitudes, polar night can last for 179 days. The best lighting conditions are the polar twilight, when there is no true daylight but the scattering of light particles by the upper atmosphere creates an ethereal blend of pinks, purples and yellows. Finland in early January is an ideal location, as seen here at the magical Riisitunturi National Park. #coloursofriisitunturi #Riisitunturi #posio #finland #lapland #finnishlapland #polarnight #polartwilight #pink #purple #colours #yellow #landscapephotography #light #sunset #laplandfinland #discoverfinland #bestoffinland #🇫🇮

“The Quiraing” There are some places which, once seen, are hard to forget. The Quiraing on the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Hebrides is one such landscape. It’s one of the world’s most beautiful broken places, an ancient landslide formed of terrestrial turmoil which resembles a domain of dragons, dinosaurs or the BFG (the latter was filmed here). The dappled and diffused light of this early summer morning illuminates the hills and the clichéd lone tree; so much for the “misty isle” the Vikings named “Skuy”. #quiraing #skye #hebrides #lonetree #green #tree #landscapes #landscapephotography #travelphotography #scotlandhighlands #scottishislands #highlandsandislands #scotland #scotlandphotography #officialisleofskye #visittheisleofskye #🇬🇧 #🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

“100 Images” Sometimes it’s good to look back and reflect on the photographs we’ve taken and the places we’ve visited. Photographs are aide-mémoires for our experiences; they help us to relive and to remember. Today, we spend so much time looking at our and others’ photographs on tiny screens, it’s easy to forget the medium of print. I believe that our favourite photographs should be printed to be enjoyed properly. My project is called “100 Images” and is a printed collection of my first 100 portfolio entries. If you ever get into a rut, try printing your images and see what it does for your creativity. #100Images #djoburton #printing #portfolio #book #photographybook #photobook #memory #creativity #aidememoire #travelphotography #landscapephotography #100 #📕 #📷 #💯

“Desert Rose” "I dream of rain / I dream of gardens in the desert sand / I wake in vain / I dream of love as time runs through my hand / I dream of fire those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire / and in the flames her shadows play in the shape of a man’s desire / This desert rose each of her veils, a secret promise / this desert flower no sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this" – Desert Rose by Sting (2000). “The Floating Lake” The floating lake at Sørvágur on the Faroese island of Vágar is one of nature’s great optical illusions. Known as Sørvágsvatn or Leitisvatn by the locals, the lake snakes perilously close to the cliff edge. Those standing on the higher cliffs get the illusion that the lake is floating well above the sea level. The area has a macabre history, however, as the 148m cliff Trælanípa was supposedly the site where the Vikings disposed of unwanted slaves by hurling them into the ocean. #thefloatinglake #sorvagsvatn #leitisvatn #traelanipa #vagar #faroeislands #lake #opticalillusion #light #clouds #atmosphere #atlantic #visitfaroeislands #faroeislandscollective #landscapephotography #travelphotography #🇫🇴

“The Great Jaguar” The jungle city of Tikal is a jewel of Mayan classic period architecture. The site is enormous, covering over 16km in the remote Petén basin in the north of modern day Guatemala. Distinctive pyramids stretch out above the jungle canopy like sentinels in the steamy wilderness. This photograph features the Temple of the Great Jaguar, which depicts a king on a jaguar throne. The best view is atop one of the stepped pyramids at dawn, where the toucans and macaws soar and the coatimundi forage below. #thegreatjaguar #tikal #tikalnationalpark #peten #guatemala #maya #mayan #jaguar #jungle #temple #pyramid #templo #unesco #landscapephotography #travelphotography #archaeology #green #travelguatemala #🇬🇹

“Torpedo” The warm tropical waters of the Indian Ocean are home to an array of marine mammals, such as these beautiful spinner or bottlenose dolphins. This is especially so around Réunion Island, where dolphins and whales, attracted by the nutrient rich waters, come in droves. It’s a double-edged sword: whilst visitors can have intimate encounters with curious dolphins (like these ones, which tracked our boat), bull and tiger shark attacks have increased so much that swimming in the sea is now forbidden. #torpedo #SaintGilleslesBaines #Réunion #laRéunion #dolphin #indianocean #marinelife #marinemammals #blue #oceanblue #nature #wildlife #travelphotography #wildlifephotography #underthesea #dolphinwatching #🐬 #🇷🇪

“Glendalough” Deep in the Wicklow Mountains in the Irish Republic lies the monastic settlement of Glendalough. The name means ‘valley of two lakes’ and was first settled in the 6th century by St Kevin, a Leinsterman who went into the mountains seeking a life of asceticism. The 30m round tower is the site’s icon - an extraordinary building symbolising refuge for the weary and sanctuary for the persecuted. This photograph, taken from a nearby brook, reminds me of a fairy-tale idyll; where art thou, Rapunzel? #glendalough #wicklow #countrywicklow #monastic #monasticcity #wicklowmountains #ireland #eire #nationalpark #longexposure #river #green #landscapephotography #travelphotography #fairytale #roundtower #🍀 #🇮🇪 with @robdixon01

“The Winds of Winter” Sometimes all you get is a tiny window of time in which the light hits a scene and transforms it into something magical. On this blustery day in Torrenieri, southern Tuscany, the winds of winter had cast a dark shadow over the famous field with the cypress grove. However, as the sun set to the west below the edge of the storm, the brown earth was briefly illuminated in golden tones, providing a contrast with the malevolent sky; a fleeting dream of spring in the Val d’Orcia. #thewindsofwinter #light #golden #sunset #storm #torrenieri #sanquiricodorcia #tuscany #toscana #valdorcia #cypress #italy #italia #landscapephotography #travelphotography #tuscanygram #tuscanylandscape #discovertuscany #🇮🇹

“Elliðaey” The Vestmannaeyjar archipelago sits off the southern coast of Iceland, in the wild Atlantic. Its islands have beautiful and dramatic cliff formations formed by volcanic eruptions under the waves. This photograph features Elliðaey, which sits in the shadow of Eyjafjallajökull on the mainland. The island was historically inhabited by a few hardy families who fought with the elements until the 1930s. Today, the iconic puffin-hunting lodge is the only sign of human life – and gives a sense of scale. #Elliðaey #Vestmannaeyjar #westmanislands #Eyjafjallajökull #huntinglodge #iceland #island #islands #archipelago #landscapephotography #travelphotography #glacier #theisland #icelandadventure #icelandtravel #volcano #icelanders #🏠 #🇮🇸

“Tuk-Tuk” The three-wheeled rickshaw or tuk-tuk is the iconic mode of transport in the Indian subcontinent, and especially so in the congested streets of Sri Lanka’s bustling capital, Colombo. This photograph features a yellow tuk-tuk taking a rest at the Galle Face on a breezy summer’s day. Sri Lanka is a wonderful place, with friendly people, and it is hard to comprehend the senseless loss of life caused by the terrorist bombings on Easter Sunday 2019. #tuktuk #tuk-tuk #colombo #srilanka #galleface #rickshaw #fluffywhiteclouds #clouds #travelphotography #asia #srilankatourism #travelgram #colombolife #srilankabombblast #srilankatravel #🇱🇰 with @darrenjalmeida

“Into the Arctic” For thousands of years arctic cultures have used dogs for transportation. Packs of huskies hauled sleds and herded reindeer for Inuit, Sámi and Eskimo cultures, but the practice continued into the age of polar exploration. A common feature of the Siberian husky, like this one at Ruka in Finland, are the piercing blue eyes. It’s a mutation of the ALX4 gene, which results in reduced pigment production in the eyes and causes them to appear blue. Perhaps George RR Martin’s direwolves have the same? #intothearctic #behindblueeyes #husky #siberianhusky #arctic #arcticculture #saami #dog #sleddog #ruka #travelphotography #finland #kuusamo #huskydog #lapland #animalportrait #blueeyes #direwolf #🐺#🇫🇮

“Aphrodite’s Afterglow” Occasionally, in the twilight shortly before sunrise or after sunset a pinkish glow becomes visible above the horizon. The atmospheric phenomenon is known as the Belt of Venus, or, more prosaically, an anticrepuscular arch or afterglow. The pink is caused by the backscatter of reddened light from the sun. This photograph shows Venus’ - or rather Aphrodite’s - afterglow above the acropolis in Athens, Greece; as if showing off to her great rival Athena, whose Parthenon sits atop her eponymous city. #aphroditesafterglow #beltofvenus #afterglow #athens #acropolis #parthenon #sunset #pink #pinkcloud #twilight #travelphotography #anticrepuscular #ancientgreece #topathensphoto #landscapephotography #greece #🏛 #🇬🇷 with @mimfoster and @hjmday

“Giants of the Pacific” The extinct volcano of Ma′unga Terevaka on the Pacific island of Rapa Nui (Easter Island, Chile) is the site of the wonderful moai quarry. The area is made of Lapilli tuff, which the Pacific islanders used to fashion their unique monolithic statues that venerated the dead. Not all moai were completed and successfully hauled down to their ahu platforms on the coast, however, and so the slopes of the Rano Raraku crater are littered these abandoned, mysterious giants. “The Faculty” The city of Doha, Qatar, is brimming with modern architectural wonders. The Mangera Yvars designed Faculty of Islamic Studies, in Education City, is a stunning example of the synergy of art, culture and architecture. The premise is the Islamic Kulliyyah (كُلِّيَّة), a beacon of enlightenment where all knowledge is sought. The themes of knowledge and light are visible here in the central courtyard, where huge Qur’anic verse adorns the white walls and the two 90m minarets symbolise these tenets. #thefaculty #facultyofislamicstudies #kulliyyah #doha #qatar #islam #education #knowledge #enlightenment #blueandwhite #architecture #architecturephotography #travelphotography #educationcity #visitqatar #qatarliving #🇶🇦

“The Puffessor” In the summer months, the Faroese island of Mykines is home to tens of thousands of returning Atlantic puffins, who congregate on the grassy slopes above the cliffs to renew vows and re-make their burrows. Whilst not strictly monogamous, puffins rarely change mates and pairs tend to go back to the same nest each year to raise a single chick. Here, the resplendent Puffessor looks anxiously out to sea for a returning partner. “Mughal Morning” The Badshahi Mosque of Lahore, Pakistan’s magical cultural capital, is a magnificent example of Mughal architecture. Completed in 1673 by Emperor Aurangzeb, its distinctive red sandstone, white marble and giant domes have graced Lahore ever since, outliving the Mughal Empire, the Sikh era and British rule despite falling into disrepair. In modern Pakistan, it is a symbol of Islamic Punjab and is rightly treasured by the locals. “Le Morne” The palm-fringed beach of the Le Morne Brabant peninsula, in the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, is a tropical idyll with a tragic past. Its eponymous basalt monolith was a refuge for escaped slaves. Upon the abolition of slavery in 1835, it is said that British police sent to relay the news were misinterpreted as a punitive mission and the inhabitants chose to leap to their deaths rather than face recapture. Today the area is a UNESCO site and an integral part of the Mauritian weltanschauung. #lemorne #lemornebrabant #mauritius #indianocean #palmtree #beach #slavery #unesco #mountain #lagoon #luxlemorne #tropical #idyll #landscapephotography #travelphotography #🇲🇺 @luxlemorne

“Myllykoski” Perched on the bank of the fast-flowing Patoniva River in Finland’s Oulanka National Park is the Myllykoski (or Old Mill). The winters are harsh in Northern Ostrobothnia, often with prolonged periods of snow-filled grey skies, little daylight and temperatures plummeting to -40C. Finland is an outdoors place, whatever the weather, and despite the shelter and warmth of the wilderness hut, the locals prefer to cook reindeer meat and sip hot berry juice around an open fire; it’s not hard to see why. #Myllykoski #theoldmill #finland #oulankanationalpark #oulanka #patoniva #northernostrobothnia #river #winter #snowscape #wildernesslodge #landscapephotography #travelphotography #longexposure #winterwonderland #finnishparks #🇫🇮 Wonderful tours of @finnishparks offered by @outdoorpassionfinland @mytrailnorth - check them out!

“Bliss (Desert Edition)” Orange and blue are complimentary colours, being opposites in the theoretical colour wheel. In practice, they have the highest contrast between their exposures, which means that our brains are able to recognise the difference with the least effort. The result is that orange and blue are a powerful and aesthetically pleasing combination. This photograph is a variation on the theme of Charles O’Rear’s famous work ’Bliss’ (see previous post) and was taken in the Wadi Rum in Jordan in December 2018. #bliss #orange #blue #orangeandblue #blueandorange #colourtheory #colortheory #complimentary #complimentarycolours #colourtherapy #contrast #minimalism #wadirum #jordan #desert #cloud #sandandsky #landscapephotography #travelphotography #🇯🇴

“Primavera (after Bliss)” This is my rather clumsy homage to the world’s most viewed photograph. In 1996, Charles O’Rear stopped his car by a road in Sonoma County, California, got out and took a single Velvia film image of green hill in a blue sky with wispy clouds. Microsoft later bought the image, named it ‘Bliss’ and it became the iconic Windows XP default wallpaper, viewed billions of times. This image was taken in April 2018 in a field in my favourite place in the world: the beautiful Val d’Orcia in Tuscany, Italy. #primavera #bliss #windowsxp #microsoft #windows #Torrenieri #Tuscany #toscana #Italy #spring #cloud #greenandblue #valdorcia #colour #blueandgreen #landscapephotography #travelphotography #charlesorear #italia #🇮🇹 @chuck_orear

“Purple Haze” Dusk at Mount Nyiragongo in the Democratic Republic of Congo creates that rarest of hues in the natural world: violet (purple). The colour is at the extremity of the spectrum and is hard to find in nature. Perhaps this is why we have always prized purple, and associate it with royalty and wealth. Here, the red of the lava lake mixes with the post sunset blue hour to create nature’s purple haze. This photograph was taken in October 2017, shortly before the Virunga region was closed to tourists. #purplehaze #MountNyirangongo #nyiragongo #Virunga #VirungaNationalPark #DemocraticRepublicofCongo #DRC #congo #kivu #goma #volcano #lavalake #lava #purple #violet #fire #africa #landscapephotography #travelphotography #light #🌋 #🇨🇩
