What will you carry forward from your study away experience to this semester at Duke? - “In Spain, I could take an afternoon to rest and reflect and know that it would be good for me and not set me back. I have learned to take care of myself better – mentally and physically – and I hope to bring the satisfaction, happiness, and peace I feel with my life right now back to Duke in the spring.” ~Computer Science Student Evaluation, Duke in Madrid, Fall 2018 #backatduke #startfresh #dukeglobaled #studyaway #studyabroad (PC: @dukeinmadrid)

Duke in Russia info session TODAY (September 25) at 4:30 pm in Languages 114. 🇷🇺 Alisa Bedrov ’19 shares a bit about the Duke in Russia summer program ↓ • "If someone would have told me when I first read Crime and Punishment that I would someday walk in Raskolnikov’s footsteps and see the same places he saw – his house, Sonya Marmeladov’s house, the Griboyedov Canal, and Alyona and Lizaveta’s house – I would not have believed them. Walking down the same streets as the character of my favorite novel was one of the most surreal and genuine experiences of my time in Russia. It was one of the few times where I really felt like I was part of the city and immersed in the country’s culture. _ This experience showed me that there are some things that you just can’t learn or experience from the Internet, textbooks, or even guided museum tours. The best way to really understand something is to actually immerse yourself in it. It’s worth it to venture out into the world and experience something firsthand, even if it takes a little more effort, uncertainty, and unfamiliarity than one might be initially comfortable with. _ My biggest takeaway from this experience was realizing that there is always more to the story and always much to be learned from putting oneself into another person’s shoes.” @aleeesa08 • • • #dukestudents #studyabroad #studyaway #dukeglobal #dukeglobaled #DukeinRussia #dukeintheworld

Ashleigh Smith ’20 is on Duke in NY this fall, and she lined up an internship with the Guggenheim Museum – a perfect match for her major in art history with a museum theory and practice concentration. _ What will the internship involve? Ashleigh will be working in the curatorial department, primarily conducting research for an upcoming exhibition but also contributing to a new acquisition project. _ How did she do it? The Duke in NY–Arts & Media program offers 3-4 courses for Duke credit, one of which includes a work experience/apprenticeship requiring 15-20 hours of work per week. Duke in NY program faculty and staff provide guidance and connect students with their numerous professional contacts in the city, but students are responsible for lining up their own internship. • • • #dukestudents #dukeglobal #dukeglobaled #dukeintheworld #studyaway #dukeinnewyork #arthistory #museumtheory #dukearts #dukeaahvs
