And then this happened... catching up with the great Jimmy Webb at his home in Oyster Bay. Thank you to all the journalists who have written such positive reviews of my new book about Jimmy Webb’s greatest creation, “The Wichita Lineman: Searching In The Sun For The World’s Greatest Unfinished Song” (Faber). The response has been overwhelming. Thanks to the London Review of Books, The Economist, The Financial Times, The Guardian, Uncut, Q, Strong Words, The Bookseller, Hot Press, Kirkus, Record Collector, Rock’s Back Pages... thanks to you all. World Exclusive 🙌 What better way to kick off GQ Men Of The Year Awards this year than to announce Greta Thunberg as our Game Changer of 2019. Wearing a jacket customised by Greta herself, the climate activist and global disrupter will be honoured at our annual Men Of The Year Awards at Tate Modern on September 3rd. It’s going to be an extraordinary evening. #gretathunberg @britishgq @boss #gqmoty #menoftheyearawards #menoftheyear2019 #boss

In just over three weeks time, the 22nd @britishgq Men Of The Year Awards will take place in the Turbine Hall of The Tate Modern, where we will once again be celebrating the great, the good and the extraordinary. Given our history of celebrating royalty on our covers, as you can see here from our specially commissioned covers of HRH Prince Charles, HRH Prince William and HRH Prince Harry, will we be honouring a royal once again? Or maybe a sportsman? Or what about an actor? Hollywood legends? A world-renowned entrepreneur? A storm-breaking hip-hop star, an activist supreme, the most famous artist in the world, or maybe an actress with the most impressive CV in the industry? Or maybe we’re going to celebrate all of these and more... Only a few weeks to wait... #princecharles #princewilliam #princeharry @sussexroyal @kensingtonroyal @clarencehouse @bailey_studio @matthewbrookesphoto @normanjeanroy

James Corden is our September cover star, our biggest issue of the year. Four years, 650 shows and six billion YouTube views later, The Late Late Show is still the driving force of late night TV in the US. This summer Corden returned to the U.K. to record #TLLS on home soil, and @britishgq joined him on set and in the writers room to find out what’s next for the star. There was certainly a lot of talk about #gavinandstacey. @j_corden @simonwebbphoto @angelomitakos @paulsolomonsgq @tom_lamont_journalist #jamescorden #thelatelateshow @mrbenwinston @latelateshow Here are both our newsstand and subscriber copies. #gqhype: The Business of Sleep On a Wednesday afternoon, in a darkened room on the ground floor of the vast PricewaterhouseCoopers building on the bank of the Thames, sleep expert Dr Guy Meadows took to the stage and set about giving the crowd nightmares. He started, in fairness, with a joke. “If you are feeling tired today,” said Meadows to the hundred or so PwC employees, “this is probably the one talk where it’s perfectly OK to have a good nap.” The crowd chortled. Sleep experts don’t have too many jokes in their locker, but this was a hardy perennial and Meadows – a slight man with excitable eyebrows and the forced bonhomie of a stage hypnotist – explained he was the cofounder of The Sleep School. It had programmes for schools and parents, he said, but today was its increasingly popular “professional” programme – for businesses. The past decade, he said, had seen a “tidal wave” of new research all showing the multifaceted importance of sleep to human performance and so he set about explaining how they could use it to – quite literally – sleep their way to the top... It was twenty years ago today... @tonyparsonsuk caused a publishing sensation with the publication of #manandboy, a genuine phenomenon. It won the British Book Of The Year Award, and went on to sell millions of copies in dozens of counties, making Tony eventually as famous for his fiction as he already was for his journalism. The book, which helped redefine the conversation about what it meant to be a single father, was a classic example of a word-of-mouth success. I’ve known Tony for most of his professional life, and it was a joy to see him blossom with the extraordinary success of this book. Today sees the publication of the 20th anniversary edition of the book, so I guess it’s time to read it again. 📕

#gqhype 😱 The Cleveland rapper, and star of Netflix’s The Dirt, talks scrapes with the law, family dramas and near-death experiences. By @kevinegperry @britishgq #machinegunkelly @machinegunkelly 👀 “Machine Gun Kelly’s house in LA is the sort of place that makes it a shame they don’t do MTV Cribs any more. A gothic-style mansion arranged around a huge central staircase, the place is decorated with ornate chandeliers and elaborate tapestries, but there are plenty of clues that this is a young man’s bachelor pad. One room, which looks out onto the swimming pool, is given over to a hoop-shooting basketball arcade game, a pool table and a Monster Energy-branded drinks fridge...” Read the rest at BritishGQ.co.uk

Last night I launched the publicity campaign for my new Faber & Faber boom “The Wichita Lineman” at Wilton’s Music Hall in Whitechapel, the oldest working music hall in the world. While there was a venue built on the site in the 17th Century, the current building hails from the Victorian era, and what a beauty it is. Thank you very much to @onetrackminds for asking me to talk, and congratulations to all the other speakers: #janehorrocks #davidgrant #felicitycloake #jamessills and #alicemartin. Earlier this year Simon Pegg broke the internet. It was an accident, of course, but one Instagram post was all it took and the cyber damage was done. Pegg had been preparing for his role as a hostage victim in the forthcoming indie thriller Inheritance and with six months of strength work, circuit training, core exercises and daily 10km runs under his ever-shrinking belt, he was 20 pounds lighter and had cut his body fat from 12 to eight per cent. Tom Cruise called him “Eight-Pack Peggles”. He looked very lean, his skin stretched across his torso, every taut muscle on display. A social media firestorm ensued. And Pegg isn’t even on social media anymore.... Read the rest on #gqhype this morning @britishgq

#GQ hype 🍏 Eddy Cue does not resemble the man you have in mind when you picture the guy who’s currently the point person for Apple. He resembles not so much a sleek Silicon Valley titan as the neighbour who’s happy to lend you his lawnmower. He has a robust handshake, a booming laugh and, according to reports, occasionally falls asleep in meetings. Cue is perhaps the least visible of Apple’s top brass, certainly nowhere near as known as CEO Tim Cook or the soon-to-depart chief designer Jony Ive. And yet, just as Ive was the driving force behind Apple’s hardware, Cue – whose official job title is senior vice president of internet services and software – is now the driving force behind all the services from Apple Music and Maps to the new Apple credit card and Apple TV+, its new Netflix-rival streaming service set to launch this autumn in more than 100 countries. For the first time, Apple wouldn’t just make products that let you watch and listen to content created by others; it would be creating the content itself. @britishgq exclusive by @stuartmcgurkgq

#fbf 1986 🐪 The Eighties was a far more bohemian decade than it is ever given credit for, although there were obviously elements about it that were completely proscriptive. For instance if you were the Editor of i-D you were never allowed out of the house unless you were wearing a black or navy MA-1 flying jacket. Even on a camel.
