It’s #WorldGiraffeDay! . On this day we celebrate the longest-necked animal in the world and raise support, create awareness & shed light on the challenges giraffe face in the wild. . Biologists have warned us for years that giraffes are gravely imperiled. But unlike the slaughter of elephants and rhinos, the collapse of Africa’s giraffes has been quiet and overlooked. . Their numbers have dropped 40% in the last 30 years alone and there are only 111,000 left in the wild. . 🦒 How much do you know about #Giraffes?🦒 🌿A giraffe’s pattern is as unique as our fingerprints. . 🌿Having bigger, rounder spots seems to correlate with a higher survival rate for young giraffes. . 🌿The spots may also impact the animal’s ability to regulate its temperature. . 🌿Some trees succeed in life by offering giraffes a meal of flowers, which means they are also #pollinators as they are capable of traveling more than ten miles a day between stands of flowering trees. . 🌿They can then live up to 40 years in captivity but unfortunately due to poaching, predators, and other threats, they are likely to live up to only 25 years in the wild. . Will you stick your neck out for giraffes? . If you are in the US, you can sign our petition to help these giants in the wild be protected by the #EndangeredSpeciesAct - Link in bio

The ocean is full of amazing creatures, from deep-sea vents thousands of feet beneath the water's surface to sunlit coral reefs. It's strange and marvelous under the sea. 🐋🐟🐠🐡🦐🦑🐚 On this #WorldOceansDay 🌊 we want to feature one of the most endangered mammals in our oceans: The #vaquita 🐳 This little porpoise is the smallest cetacean in the world. It was discovered in 1958 and today we are one step away from losing it forever with less than 30 left in the wild. This species, native to the Gulf of California, is teetering on the brink of extinction due to illegal fishing gillnet methods that accidentally entangle vaquitas as #bycatch while supplying the black market with endangered Totoaba fish, which is coveted for it’s “medicinal properties”. ________________________________ What can you do to help #ProtectOurSpecies? ✔️ Protect wildlife habitats: Do your bit to preserve your environment, whether its volunteering at your local reserve or sanctuary, or create a space for nature in your garden. ✔️ Educate others: Spend time doing some research and spread the word. ✔️ Shop ethically: Avoid buying products made from endangered animals. ✔️ Be an ethical tourist: Pick your experiences wisely. We all love spending time with animals, but the rise of animal experiences abroad is endangering the lives of many animals. Featured artist 🖌️: @thatzachrocks

On June 2, 2017, U.S. President Donald Trump announced his intention to withdraw the United States from the historic Paris Agreement on climate change. In the wake of that announcement, subnational actors and stakeholders from across the US stepped up to reaffirm their commitment to cutting greenhouse gas emissions and seizing the enormous economic opportunities of clean energy. . One of these groups is the US Climate Alliance, a bipartisan coalition of governors who remain committed to meeting the goals of the #ParisAgreement. Currently 24 governors strong, the USCA represents 55% of the U.S. population and an $11.7 trillion economy – an economy larger than all countries but the United States and China. . The climate and clean energy policies in Alliance states have attracted billions of dollars of new investment and helped create more than 1.7 million clean energy jobs, over half the total clean energy jobs in the United States. Ready to shellebrate #WorldTurtleDay?! Here are some fun facts about turtles: . . 🐢 Sea turtles have existed for more than 100 million years, making them some of the most ancient creatures on Earth. They even survived the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. . . 🐢 Sea turtles do not have teeth — instead, all turtles have very sharp beaks for biting. Turtle hatchlings emerge from their eggs using the caruncle or “egg-tooth” 😬 . . 🐢 Each species has its own unique diet. The green sea turtle feeds on seagrasses, leatherbacks feed on jellyfish and other soft-bodied animals, and loggerheads feed on crabs, clams, and other heavy-shelled animals. 🦀 . . 🐢 Female sea turtles lay their eggs on land in sandy coastal areas, and most return to nest on the same beach on which they were born . . . We can all agree that turtles are some of the most beautiful sea creatures, but sadly habitat loss and human interference are major problems. Hundreds of thousands of sea turtles and other marine mammals die each year from ocean pollution and ingestion or entanglement in marine debris. . Let's work together to #ProtectOurSpecies

From #MothersDay to #EndangeredSpeciesDay 2019 we’re highlighting threatened mamas and their babies! Are you ready for some Grey’s Zebra cuteness? . Females Grevy’s Zebras usually give birth to a single foal after a gestation period of 390 days, the longest of any equid. The mother will leave the herd to give birth in heavy brush and will drive away other zebras during the first two days of life before rejoining the nursery group. Grevy's females become independent of their mother at 13 to 18 months of age. Young males remain with their mother for at least three years. . Grevy’s zebras have undergone one of the most substantial reductions of range of any African mammal. Habitat loss in an already restricted range is a serious threat to the Grevy’s survival. They have to compete for resources with other grazers, as well as cattle and livestock. Due to overgrazing and competition for water, Grevy’s juveniles have a low survival rate. However, the primary cause of the decline of Grevy’s zebras is hunting. They are hunted for their striking skins, food and, in some regions, medicinal uses. . Together we can save these awesome mamas, babies, and families. Join us to #ProtectOurSpecies!

We’re highlighting threatened mamas and their babies from #MothersDay to #EndangeredSpeciesDay 2019, today is the turn for the #PolarBear! . Polar bear cubs are typically born as tiny, blind, downy, helpless creatures. They spend the next two to three months consuming their mothers’ rich milk and growing by leaps and bounds. Mother bears are teachers and protectors. They keep their cubs close by and ‘clack’ at them when they wander too far. They will fight off predators and sometimes hide cubs from danger when fleeing a threat. Their dedication can even extend past their cubs’ lives: mother bears have been seen protecting dead cubs, refusing to leave them even when threats emerge. . Studies about polar bear population indicate that their numbers have declined by 40% over the past decade. As a result of climate change, the sea ice in the Arctic is melting and forcing the bears to travel further and use more energy to catch their prey. Polar bears are starving and could face extinction faster than previously thought. . Give some love to these fierce mamas and join us in our efforts to #ProtectOurSpecies! Photo credit: @trackerbaz

We’re highlighting amazing and threatened mamas and their babies from #MothersDay to #EndangeredSpeciesDay 2019! . Having a baby elephant is a serious commitment. Elephants have a longer pregnancy than any other mammal—almost 22 months. At birth, elephants already weigh some 200 pounds and stand about three feet tall. Adult females and calves move together as groups, but adult males disperse from their mothers when reaching adolescence. . Since 1986, the Asian elephant has been listed as endangered as the population has declined by at least 50% over the last three generations. . The pre-eminent threats to Asian elephants today are loss, degradation and fragmentation of habitat, leading in turn to increasing conflicts between humans and elephants. They are poached for ivory and a variety of other products including meat and leather. . Together we can save these awesome mamas, babies, and families. Join us to #ProtectOurSpecies!

We’re highlighting incredible and threatened mamas and babies from #MothersDay to #EndangeredSpeciesDay 2019! . . Tiger cubs stay close to their moms until they turn two, after which they largely become solitary. At birth, tiger cubs are defenseless and nearly blind, so tiger moms are incredibly protective, leaving their cubs only to hunt. While cubs instinctively know how to stalk prey, moms teach them essential hunting skills like hiding behind vegetation. 🔎🌿🐅 . . . With only 2,000 - 3,000 mature individuals estimated in the wild, tigers are endangered. Some of their biggest threats are coastal erosion from rising sea levels, poaching for pelts, and large-scale habitat loss due to human growth and expansion. . . . It’s not too late to save these incredible creatures. Join us to #ProtectOurSpecies!

Between Mother’s Day and Endangered Species Day on May 17, we’re highlighting some of the most incredible — and most endangered — mamas in the world 🗺 . . . Meet the Pygmy Three-Toed Sloth — the tiniest of the family of sloths, the Pygmy three-toed is entirely native to the island of Escudo de Veragua, off the Caribbean coast of Panama. 🇵🇦 . . Baby pygmies stick to their mothers (literally) for 5-10 months. During the time, babies learn to climb by using their mothers as jungle gyms!🧗🏽‍♀️ . . . Critically endangered with a rapidly declining population and shrinking habitat area, Pygmy three-toed sloths are threatened with extinction. But we can change the course for these magnificent mamas, babies, and families — join us to #protectourspecies and protect sloths!
