#Repost @theanthropoceneproject ・・・ Right in between #WorldEnvironmentDayand #WorldOceansDay we're thinking back to 2017 when @edwardburtynsky, Jennifer Baichwal and Nick de Pencier ( @mercuryfilmsinc) spent some time with #BigLonelyDoug in B.C. for the #AnthropoceneProject. While BLD stands strong as a symbol for old-growth preservation, he can also serve to remind us of the impacts deforestation has on our planet, especially our oceans when it comes to absorbing atmospheric CO2. Healthy forests can absorb what oceans would otherwise take in! 🌲🌊

In Senegal this #EarthDay, shooting for my next project. While here, I've been trying to understand what the future looks like for sub-Saharan Africa. The population is expected to grow from 1.2B - 4B in the next 2 generations, putting immense pressure in all directions. Meanwhile, many countries around the world are rushing in to capture the wealth of previously-protected resources, making Africa a continent to watch closely during this next iteration of the industrial revolution, globalism and resource extraction.

"Burtynsky’s photographs are glimpses into the vastness of industrial and technological systems of global capitalism that elicit both awe and unease; they can feel like encounters with the postmodern sublime. The Anthropocene Project — with its encyclopedic reach and factual rigor — transmutes the unsettling, otherworldly appeal of his aesthetic into ecological conscience and a grave call for change." via @hyperallergic (read the full article, link in bio) View the #AnthropoceneProject exhibition at @agotoronto until Jan. 6 and at @NatGalleryCan until Feb 24. 2019. Find more about this years-in-the-making project: https://www.ft.com/content/1ea9b25c-cc1d-11e8-b276-b9069bde0956 #Repost @ft_weekend ・・・ The word ‘Anthropocene’ first entered popular use about 20 years ago as scientists looked for way to describe a new geologic era, one defined by the impact of humans. ‘Earlier eras have been linked to climatic shifts caused by asteroids or ice ages, but now it is human activity that is reshaping the Earth,’ says Leslie Hook for the FT. Photographer @edwardburtynsky’s new project explores just this theme, focusing on the indelible human fingerprint on the planet — whether in tunnels, dams, mines, forests or megacities. As we get closer to the launch of the @theanthropoceneproject it's important to acknowledge some of the positive stories that we've documented in the last few years, which have the potential to set us up for #AGoodAnthropocene. But in the face of inevitable human influence on the Earth, what does #AGoodAnthropocene mean? It means a move towards sustainable solutions. It means actively reducing environmental pollution and degradation. It means a global, collective effort to live consciously and responsibly. – Edward Burtynsky Read more, link in bio 👆 Pictured here: PS10 Solar Power Plant, Seville, Spain 2013 Lithium Mines #1, Salt Flats, Atacama Desert, Chile 207
