There are trips, and then there are the trips that change you. I met @siljevallestad in January at Davos, she asked me to come on this trip with her—100 of the world’s leaders on a boat across the Arctic Ocean; discussing the world’s most important questions, no wifi, no phones, just…time. I fell in love with her instantly and am now in love in Norway. I guarantee you, after this trip, our minds and souls will be so aligned, if not with each other, then at least with the polar bears :D We’ll be launching tomorrow, and taking off (sea-bound) on Friday. I hope we make some progress, and I hope that this is the first of many revolutionary excursions. Glad to be part of the inaugural body of @futuretalksco

“My mother gave birth to me in a casket, I never grew out of it” — I wrote the poem this quote is from in one sitting the same year 300 of our sisters were kidnapped. It came out almost involuntarily as if the weight of knowing how often this happens opened the floodgates to a whole host of emotions. It always feels so personal, the myriad moments of erasure that come with growing up in this body, with being vulnerable to disappearing, literally, less likely to be found because of race, or gender, or religion. It makes me fight harder. Working to end these atrocities, trying to make it impossible for us to lose more girls or not remember their names— whether it’s though my art, or research, or advocacy—it’s a struggle I’m proud to be a part of. For the second year now, I’ll be teaming up with Reuters this fall to #endtrafficking. I’ll keep you posted on ways to contribute, and I hope this moves and inspires you to act. Nearly half of the #chibokgirls are still unaccounted for. There are millions more people who are #disappeared #Refugees are even more vulnerable to trafficking and other forms of violence. We definitely need all hands on deck #bringbackourgirls #erasure #endtrafficking #withrefugees #reuters #trustconference #sistersentrance

Happy birthday President @barackobama !!! Thank you for inspiring me and millions of others around the world to strive to be better and expect nothing less. Your mantras, the round tables, the constant reminder that "better is good" and that you'll be there even when you're far— they keep a lot of us going. I miss our discussions, but I know there will be many more to come. Sending you love and joy and a reminder that I'm sooooo proud of you as always :) #obamaday #obama

I was named one of BBC's 100 Most Inspirational Women and I immediately thought of all the women that inspired me :) I wrote this poem to celebrate who we are. So this is for all of you out there who've ever loved and given love and given all you've got to make the world a little better-- "Take my strength, I've got plenty, take my hands I've got two, take my voice let it guide you and if it shakes, ask yourself, when the earth shakes, do you think that she's afraid?" #SistersEntrance #empoweringwomen #women #beauty #BBC #strength

I know we’re all products of our societies, but it still gets to me sometimes—that everything we are might be dictated by everything around us. The decisions we’re making, our likes and dislikes— to be constantly surrounded, constantly influenced—it gets harder and harder to hear my own voice sometimes. I wonder what it would feel like to be away from it all for a while, to get to know me. These are things that drive me crazy as a writer! So, the cure? I’ve moved to Baltimore for a writing project, far from the hubbub of daily life but still close enough that I have the comfort of knowing that the world is full of people trying to get by and stay positive :) I’m going to be here until late August, after which I’m headed to the Arctic (long story…) I hope to have something to show for it when I’m through. If you’re feeling any type of way, know that there’s a poet holed up in Baltimore somewhere sending you good energy, love, joy, and warmth in the hopes that you find yourself too. And if you’ve already found yourself, here’s hoping you’ll find each other <3 #SistersEntrance #love #joy #empowerment #rainyday #writersblock #poetry #blackgirlwriting #melancholy is a blessing!!

I don’t know why I’ve been shy about this, but here goes…I designed the cover for my book, this is the original drawing. Ever since I was little, I would write and draw in times of uncertainty. And now that I’m not so little, the uncertainties are greater, the worries are bigger, but so are my notebooks, so are my pencils, so is my heart. This is all to say, thank you to everyone who helped me get over my fear of sharing my poetry, my drawings, my heart and soul. This book, these little triumphs wouldn’t have happened without you. And if you’ve got something hidden away in your notebooks, bring it to light— you never know whose life you might touch, you never know who’s waiting to hear from you. The quote is from my poem The Colors We Ascribe #SistersEntrance #BlackGirlMagic #Poetry saved me.

Maya Angelou said it best, when someone shows you who they are, believe them. To all my people out there, if someone tries you, show them. Life is too long to spend it trying to change people—as soon as you accept that, you can start changing the world. Also, one of my closest friends (and family members) found the one after being played a couple (thousand) times; and I went to the coolest wedding yesterday and it has me feeling extra lovey-dovey…Live, love, and laugh in the face of the impossible, and if you ever falter, I’ll be there to remind you that you’re phenomenal <3 <3 From my heart to yours, have a beautiful day.

Today I had the pleasure of speaking to 400 girls from 25 countries at the GirlUp summit in DC where First Lady Michelle Obama and Model/Actress Cara Delevingne spoke before 😍 My message to the girls— “inequality starts early, but so does the resistance; welcome to the resistance!” I can’t say enough how important it is for women and girls to support each other, to put positivity out into a world that seems to be stuck on the negatives. I’m so glad to be one of those people! I’m so proud of everyone who set this up and proud of the few boys who came through to GirlUp too. It’s incredibly important for our brothers to support girls’ rights too—no progress unless we all work together. Hopefully next year, I’ll be able to say “400 boys and girls” from goodness knows how many countries. Go rock the world, and be good to each other, and remember that there’s so many people out there who’d support you in a heartbeat if they could see the true you, that incredible human inside. Oh and I still get so nervous on the stage! But a supportive crowd always cures that ❤️#SistersEntrance
