While a guest of @oakley at MotoGP in Tuscany this past weekend, we had the privilege of getting a full private explanation as to how exactly they make their Prizm lenses so amazing. After using them for the past ski season, I was all too familiar with their ability to render the world around you in incredible detail. So I armed myself with my camera and a couple pairs of glasses and wandered out into the rolling hills, eager to see what I could create with a lens in front of the lens. What you see above is the result. Safe to say these glasses pass the eye test...literally // #oakley #oakleyprizm #oakleymugello
As the sound of the rain on the roof of the van grew from a gentle patter to a thundering roar, my only thoughts were “oh no”. Six hours later, as I wandered through the misty morning wonderland, all I could think was “ah yeah”.
Something wonderful happens to your perception of time when spending life in constant transit... Days of the week are slowly and surreptitiously replaced by the locations in which that time was spent, a fascinating (and admittedly welcome) departure from the quotidian oscillations between weekdays and weekends. Yesterday is more Arizona than it is Sunday; a month ago is much less February but instead a different continent altogether. The structure around which life is measured is inverted, with time redefined - each hour now a slice of life experienced rather than a unit of life spent. Safe to say I’m excited to see where future days hold.
The best ones shine brightest once the sun goes down
Back from the desert; better late than never... Thanks again @djiglobal, this thing is too much fun
Not quite here, but not quite there either
Pastel sunsets in the land of the rising sun. I touched down in Japan with an ambitious and aggressive itinerary, meticulously planned at the expense of countless sleepless nights. So naturally - thanks to good snow and better friends - I abandoned the entire thing. Turns out the best plans are the ones you never made in the first place. @chrisfarro you were right all along: I was never leaving. Massive thanks to @mountainwatch for making this magical trip possible ✨
Things that keep me up at night: the knowledge that tens of thousands of years from now there will be new arches and valleys, spires and ledges - yet to be carved into existence by time’s relentless scalpel - that I won’t be around to witness. That and Amazon Prime. Out of respect for the tribal members that have been kind enough to grant us permission to visit their home and land I will not be sharing the name or location of this arch. I’ve also been told that it has since been closed to all visitors until further notice. However, the greater Southwest is full of lesser known gems like this, many of which are found on public land where access isn’t an issue so get out there and keep exploring!
Lessons learned from long exposures: with enough time, even the most unsettled waters give way to a peace. A wisdom I might hope to recall the next time life’s own seas begin to stir.
Meditative mornings in the Italian countryside. I plan on coming back to these hills frequently, especially when I’m farthest away.
It’s always fun trying to find new ways to light up a tree for the holidays. Huge thanks to @cody_skene and @djiglobal for providing the flying little magic machine to make this all possible. And special shout out to @tylerjhubbell for manning the shutter while I frantically flew the drone as the rising sun began to chase the stars from the sky. This is the second time he’s driven hundreds of miles out into the middle of the desert to meet me for some ridiculous pipe dream idea, and both rank among my favorite trips I’ve ever taken. Much like the first time, clicking shutters quickly were quickly replaced clinking bottles and crackling firewood, focus beeps gave way to endless laughter and cosmic pondering by way of mutual universal stoke. Already looking forward to the next one.
It was as if the valley itself was also awakening from a deep and rainy slumber. Damp and tired trunks yawned mist into the morning light while stiff limbs unfurled to stretch out in the autumn air. I too rubbed the sleep from my eyes, and wondered if I’d even woken up at all.
Pick one thousand people and you’ll find one thousand distinct sets of beliefs, one thousand different philosophies. Each one of us has our own esoteric blend of hopes and fears, sorrows and joys, experiences and opinions that make us uniquely “us”; it’s this set of values that shapes who we are as people, what we want from the world, and what we think of society. Some of us choose to espouse our beliefs enthusiastically and vocally, while others prefer to keep theirs to themselves. But what matters most today is not whose beliefs are most important or correct, but rather that as many of those one thousand people exercise their rights for their beliefs to be heard, to be recorded, to count. So regardless of what you believe today, please vote. Do you feel disenfranchised? Go vote. Do you feel empowered? Go vote. Do you feel neglected or marginalized? Go vote. Are you fearful for our future? Go vote. Are you hopeful? Go vote. Are you afraid of guns? Are you afraid your guns might be taken away? Either way, go vote. Vote for your mom, vote for your sister, vote for your future children, vote for our planet, vote for yourself. If anything happening in today’s society aligns with or runs contrary to that certain set of beliefs that defines you as a person, today is your opportunity to let your voice be heard; don’t let it go to waste. #CreativesVote
In a vacuum, everything assumes greater significance. A pebble becomes a hill, a hill becomes a mountain. That which seemed small before now enjoys a newfound prominence, both in the landscape and the mind. Subtle variations in hue and tone, previously unnoticed, now demand attention; what was once considered mundane now blossoms with unconsidered beauty. Few places encapsulate that beautiful emptiness quite like Namibia, over twice the size of California with less than half the population of Los Angeles. Of all countries on earth, only Mongolia has a lower population density. It was in that emptiness we happened across a lonely Oryx, seeking solace from the unrelenting African sun. Silently we stood at opposite ends of the open plain pondering each other’s surprising presence; less a stare-off and more a moment of mutual acknowledgment, as if to say “how cool is it that the universe brought us both here to this very spot at this very moment” - a shared thread of common existence amplified by the absence around us. How cool indeed.
Growing up on the beach, fall brought with it little of the fanfare that consumes those living at higher elevations; palm trees serving their own tropical take on evergreen. Such a sunny stasis is more than welcome when you prefer sandals to shoes. But as I’ve grown older, so seems to have my appreciation for the ephemeral burst of color that accompanies the arrival of autumn. So I recently ventured north in search of foliage more receptive of fall’s arrival than fronds. Sleepless nights in the back of my small rental suv precipitated sub-zero sunrise hikes, where weary lungs stubbornly refused to forgive me for a summer spent leisurely lounging under those palms I now sought so desperately to replace. In my lust for leaves I nearly failed to see the forest for the trees; in the mountains it’s not just the elevation that takes your breath away.
I’ve recently grown quite fond of minimalism. It wasn’t until I began to eliminate all that wasn’t elemental to each photo that I came to be truly content with my work, satisfaction only arriving not when there was nothing more to add, but rather nothing left to take away. I’m embarrassed to admit how long it took me to realize that same exercise could also be applied to life on the other side of the lens. Stripping away all that is not core to your soul is both painful and cathartic, terrifying and serene. A lengthy caption would feel ironically maximalist at best and wholly counterproductive at worst so I’ll leave it at this: less isn’t more. Less is less. And that’s the point. New experiences with old friends. As it is in life, balance in photography is always soothing yet frustratingly hard to find. Light dances with dark, ebbing and flowing from a scene, constantly in search of equilibrium, often flirting with but never fully finding that state of perfect harmony. This just makes it all the more special when you do time that shutter perfectly, freezing that swirling chaos into a moment of balanced serenity that belies the seconds both before and after. Sometimes it takes a weekend road trip with someone you haven’t seen in years - reminiscing over memories of old while curiosity occasionally steers the conversation to the unknown - to remind you that, while things might always not be perfect and balanced, they don’t need to be as long as you have a little of both. . . . . #deathvalley #earth_shotz #wondermore #awakethesoul #earthoutdoors10k #worldprime #artofvisuals #allaboutadventures #awesome_earthpix #idratherbeinnature #liveauthentic #getoutstayout #global_exposures #lifeofadventure #lostfam #agameof10k #stayandwander #awesupply #beautifuldestinations #passionpassport #theIMAGED #depthsofearth #ourplanetdaily #ccunderfollowed #theoutbound #eclectic_shotz #exploreourearth #liveoutdoors #instagood10k #moodygrams
Long caption alert! Instagram has been weird lately, but it’s not the numbers or “algorithm” that people seem to be freaking out over that worries me. It’s that there seems to be more concern with the people that don’t see someone’s posts than the people that actually do. To use a really shitty analogy, why provide your existing clientele with mediocre, distracted service because you’re too preoccupied with the people that aren’t in your shop. Like, there’s literally nothing I can do to ensure that everyone that follows me sees what I share, that’s completely out of my control. But what I can do is try my best to make sure that those that do see my photos hopefully take something away from them. . All I’ve ever wanted to show is what amazing things the world has made available to us, even if all we have is just a weekend at our disposal; or in my case, almost only when all you have is just a weekend at your disposal. You don’t need much, just a car, some gas money, hopefully a friend to keep you company, and some snacks (I suggest gummy bears). Heck, you might not even need the car. But there’s a world out there that’s more beautiful than you can imagine and it’s just begging for you to experience it. And it’s a lot closer and easier to get to than you think. . It was photos and stories from friends and family that originally instilled in me the curiosity to explore and the greatest thanks I could think to give is passing that curiosity on. So if I’ve ever made you try to get outside more, even if it’s just to look at the clouds every so often, then fuck yeah mission accomplished. If not, then thanks for coming along for the ride anyways. To paraphrase a friend: the world is a “colorful, chaotic, and spicy” place, I’m happy to have been able to share it with you all.
This past holiday weekend, I set out to explore all the unmarked roads I’d passed on previous trips, wondering what hidden treasures I’d absentmindedly driven past while chasing more “instagram-worthy” locations. Seven hours into the drive, I realized I was yet to speak and decided to see if I could maintain that silence for the entirety of the trip; like some kind of exercise in coming to peace with one’s self. Here’s what I found: after a day, you start to almost fear the sound of your own voice, afraid that its presence means abject failure. So that’s healthy. That and there was this creeping feeling that I was going to fuck it up in some unceremonious way, like subconsciously singing along with Gucci Gang; basically the equivalent of saving yourself for marriage only to squander it on a drunken one night stand. But it finally happened, nearly 60 hours into my weekend of silence, only punctuated by my near constant sniffling and a few awkward stareoffs with gas station attendants, I turned the corner to find this immense alien wall towering above me just as the sky was starting to light up, the frigid air creating this insane pink alpenglow that faded down into the purple dirt below. Without thinking, I shouted at near-maximum volume: “no fucking way!” Not quite as eloquent as I was hoping the climax of my experiment would be but to be honest, I don’t hate it.
Once in a blue super blood moon... For as fascinated as I am by space and its endless mysteries, I’ve never been one to freak out over celestial events. Damn, I’ve been missing out. (Cheers to @tylerjhubbell for agreeing to come on this ridiculously last minute adventure and sniping this absolute banger. Couldn’t ask for a better collaborative partner/adventure buddy/cosmos ponderer.) . . . . #supermoon #earth_shotz #wondermore #awakethesoul #earthoutdoors10k #worldprime #artofvisuals #allaboutadventures #awesome_earthpix #idratherbeinnature #liveauthentic #getoutstayout #global_exposures #lifeofadventure #lostfam #agameof10k #stayandwander #awesupply #beautifuldestinations #passionpassport #theIMAGED #depthsofearth #ourplanetdaily #createcommune #theoutbound #eclectic_shotz #exploreourearth #liveoutdoors #instagood10k #moodygrams

This is probably my favorite picture from our last minute sunrise Half Dome send back in September. It’s also my only picture because I spent the rest of the time hanging over the 4000 foot cliff throwing up from altitude sickness. Anyways, 10/10 would do again.
A few months back @rynotime suggested I fly out to meet up with him in Hawaii for a quick weekend. 24 hours later we were wearing our AirBnb's bed sheets as togas in Surfer Bar. Life needs more adventures like this.
And to think, a river did all this... (high five to anyone who can spot me hanging out on the edge of the cliff 👋🏼)
It's amazing what you find when you're not looking for anything at all
Well my mom follows me on Instagram now so I feel like this one requires the obligatory "sorry Mom" 😬
One minute you were here and now you're gone. I'd miss you even if I didn't love you. And I loved the fuck out of you...
