“Our mission is to create collaborative communities that contribute towards the common good, and although social impact does take many forms, the aims that will guide Ma’an include seeing more social programs established, an increase in volunteers, more funding raised through strategic partnerships to support people in our society, and more job opportunities in the social sector," says H.E. Salama Al Ameemi, Director General of Ma'an Authority for Social Contribution ( @maanabudhabi), whose main task was to unite the government, the private sector, and civil society in growing a culture of social contribution and participation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In delivering solutions for social challenges, Ma’an itself has four main pillars of work: a social investment fund (to channel monetary contributions of public and private partners towards community initiatives), a social incubator program (to create and nurture more not-for-profit organizations and social enterprises), a social volunteering program (to create more opportunities for people to offer support to voluntary organizations), and a social impact bonds initiative (to introduce a new type of public contracting). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here's her tips to social entrepreneurs ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. Focus on developing a new product or service “The most successful business ventures are those that introduce innovation into the market and create a product or service that change people’s lives for the better.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. Measure impact ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “To know whether you are making a difference –and to demonstrate this to others- you need to know your starting point, and be able to show how your social enterprise made a change on this baseline.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. Use intelligent tools ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “They can help businesses gain valuable insights to affect growth, resolve urgent concerns, collate marketing data more quickly, provide a real-time view of the organization, and allow for the anticipation of future outcome using predictive analytics and forecasting.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Check out the full story--link in bio! 👆 (✍🏽: @tashapupic, 📷: @maanabudhabi)

“The biggest turning point for me as an entrepreneur also lines up with LMTD’s biggest challenge," says @teamlmtd founder and CEO @willhutson , as he recalls for #EntMETurningPoints the time his enterprise faced a rather tough setback in its early days- losing one of its key customers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “At LMTD, overcoming a huge client loss wasn't just a financial and logistical challenge, it's also a psychological one," Hutson says. "It's a 'with the founder's biggest fears realized, can they rebuild?' sort of moment." So what did Hutson and his team do? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ They persisted--and they managed to get through that tough period for their startup. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And, perhaps more importantly, Hutson believes that he and his team were all the better for it, thanks to that experience. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “We definitely did rebuild," Hutson remembers. "And it taught me that there's no way to build a team and a culture that's resilient (and one that can think critically), if you haven't been tested or faced with an existential crisis." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What have been your turning points as an entrepreneur? The grocery e-commerce space is one that’s been seeing a lot of interest lately in the Middle East, and Egyptian startup @weelo_llc has found a certain niche in this space: it delivers groceries to your doorstep with a click of a button, by connecting you to the nearest supermarket in its network. There’s no need to figure out the store closest to you before you make a purchase, and you wouldn’t have to get on the phone either- the Weelo app is a marketplace that connects customers to the nearest supermarket in its network, while also allowing suppliers to connect to them as well. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ With the goal of digitally transforming the supply chain process, Weelo’s network allows both supermarkets and suppliers to communicate and trade efficiently by offering a dashboard with access to an order and transaction system, analytics, back office, customer support, manage inventory, and tracks orders and invoices in one seamless digital supply chain system. The result is a platform connecting three parties, customers, supermarkets, and suppliers, which founder and CEO Mohamed Asfour says is what sets Weelo apart from its competitors. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Trust your instincts, and never give your services for free," says Asfour on an unexpected lesson he learned as an entrepreneur. "The biggest lesson I’ve learned is never offer your services for free. As a startup, the big players in the market may try to pressure you to invest your time and resources for the possibility of future business. I’ve learned that when you offer anything for free, your value automatically loses worth. So, value your time and effort, your resources and your team, and offer discounts sparingly, never free.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Check out our full interview--link in bio (https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/336768)! 👆 (✍🏽: @pamdeleon_, 📷: @weelo_llc) ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #startups #businessleaders #leadership #dubai #egypt #onlinegrocery #techstartups #supplychain

“I always wanted to create a positive change through my work.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Kicking off our #EntMETurningPoints series with this tale from @teachmenowofficial founder Thea Myhrvold (who’s also the founder of @getbeeofficial ) on how she got started on her entrepreneurial innings: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Early on in my career, I realized that technology and its prospects in business and communication could help me achieve the scale and impact I wanted to see in the world. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My career path was lined up for working at the UN, but I was frustrated as a young person, and I knew I could do much more. Thus, I started teaching, teaching students at the same time I started working at the UN. That was my spark, my aha moment. I thought over how I could scale this virtually, and make it accessible to every student. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ TeachMeNow started from the idea that anyone should be able to learn or teach online, and that modern technology could help make education accessible and easy. Making knowledge accessible to all was my goal, and that’s how I started my startup.” @theamyhrvold #teachmenow #getbee What have been some of the biggest turning points in your life as an entrepreneur? When it comes to brand loyalty, @carole.moawad, founder of Dubai-based @moishi.uae, has set a new standard for fans of mochi ice cream around the world. For the uninitiated, #mochi ice cream is a novelty Japanese dessert that wraps varied flavors of ice cream in a layer of mochi, a traditional Japanese sticky rice dough that is considered to be a symbol of good fortune- a concept that Moawad first tried during a vacation in Beirut, Lebanon, a few years back. Instantly, she became not just a good enough customer and a raving fan, but this also led her to become the founder of the first (and so far, the only) factory of the Japanese mochi ice cream concept in the UAE: M’OISHÎ. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Upon her return to the UAE, Moawad realized that while mochi ice cream was sold in restaurants across the country, it had always been imported. In 2017, she teamed up with three silent partners to launch M’OISHÎ -the first brand that manufactures mochi ice cream in the country– using only ingredients from the #UAE and #Japan. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since opening the first M’OISHÎ store in @CityWalkDubai, in March 2017, Moawad has expanded M’OISHÎ to 13 concept cafes across the UAE, with one franchise in Saudi Arabia, proving that the #GCC region was a good target market for this kind of concept. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Her tips to those eyeing the #KSA market? “Spend enough time and resources to choose the right partner and franchisee,” she says. “Don’t count on the contract; this won’t save you in case things go complicated in Saudi Arabia. Good intentions and a professional partner are your only guarantees.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Check out our full interview with Carole Moawad--link in bio (https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/337358)! 👆 (✍🏽: @tashapupic, 📷: @moishi.uae) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #entrepreneurs #womenentrepreneurs #startups #franchise #branding #mochiicecream #icecream #japanesefoodporn

"I believe that when you have a mission that involves children and creates a new future for them, good things happen all the time,” says Dr. Hibah Shata, founder and Managing Director of Maharat Learning Center ( @maharatlc), a learning center for children and young adults with special needs. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In 2005, Dr. Shata was a successful dentist. She owned and managed a fully operational dental clinic, Dr Hibah Shata Specialized Dental Clinic in Dubai. However, she was soon faced with a difficult choice– either to move abroad in search of a special nursery for her autistic child, or to start up the first medical center providing services to children and young adults with special needs in Dubai. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ At that time, there was a lot of stigma and fear associated with having a child with autism, and Dr. Shata set out to change that by founding the Child Early Intervention Medical Centre in Dubai in 2008. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As the years passed, what followed was an expansion of her enterprise: in 2010, Dr. Shata founded the Child Learning and Enrichment Medical Centre to offer a learning day program for children who were not yet in mainstream schools, and in 2017, her third center, Maharat Learning Centre, was established as a behavioral intervention and school inclusion support service provider to help children succeed in mainstream education. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Today, Dr. Shata herself is a recipient of several awards, including @dha_dubai’s Award for the Best Pediatric Rehabilitation Centre in 2017, Dubai Health Authority’s Excellence Award in 2018 and its Female Leader of the Year title in 2018, and, more recently, the global @cartierawards Women's Initiative Award in 2019. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Check out our full interview with Dr. Hibah Shata--link in bio (https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/335723)! 👆 (✍🏽: @tashapupic, 📷: @maharatlc) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #entrepreneurs #womeninbusiness #womenleadership #womenentrepreneurs #femaleentrepreneurs #leaders #leadership #business #startups #education #inclusion #wellness #autism #specialneeds

"Now is the best time to start a #business,” declares Samer Hamadeh ( @iammrbrightside), the founder of three homegrown concepts in the #UAE ( @StereoArcade, @AkibaDori, @Tokoypolitan), when asked about his thoughts on the current business climate in the country and the wider MENA region. However, Hamadeh then pulls a fast one, and adds this caveat to his response: “And by now, I mean literally any time you read this, whether it’s today or in a year: #entrepreneurs create industries and opportunities for others, and this is something critical to the region- so the MENA needs you!” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hamadeh’s response makes sense when you take a look at his entrepreneurial journey so far- he has had a particular knack for identifying untapped niches within the #hospitality space, and then finding ways to capitalize on them wholeheartedly. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Check out a few of his tips: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. You can't own an idea ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Don’t be the person that complains that someone is stealing their ideas. If you’re not trying to be great at what you do, someone is going to come along and do it better.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. Cut the negativity ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Human nature is a disaster- if you surround yourself with negative people, don’t expect anything positive to come of it.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. You can’t save people from themselves “If someone in your business life takes up your time and energy, and doesn’t show any sign of improvement, they’re not yours to fix.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Check out our full interview with Samer Hamadeh--link in bio (https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/335742)! 👆 (✍🏽: @thisisaby, 📷: @iammrbrightside) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #startups #businessleaders #leadership #restaurants #dubai

It may have started out as a blog, but Michelle Karam always believed that @traveljunkiediary would grow into something bigger- and today, seven years after its launch, the digital platform has evolved into becoming a travel-centered enterprise with a number of different business streams. But this didn’t happen by chance though- according to Karam, who had 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry before setting up TJD, this was her plan right from the start. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “It began as a blog, where I shared inspiring stories from my travels, advice, and most of all, my passion for photography. I calculated that my first year of launching TJD the blog would not generate any income, so I had put some of my savings into learning how to use Wordpress, basic coding, social media, and investing in a good quality camera.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ By the second year, as TJD found itself being recognized as a platform of repute in the market at large, Karam went on to register it as a licensed company, and she soon found herself working with hotel brands on their digital marketing campaigns, as well as on their events for new openings. In 2015, when TJD was in its fourth year, Karam unveiled @travelwithtjd, which she started out as curated press trips for brands, and this saw her working with the likes of @Emirates, @VirginAtlantic, @FourSeasons, @RitzCarlton, @magicalkenya, @visitseychelles, and many others. The positive feedback Karam got for Travel with TJD led her to want to open it up to more people, and that essentially resulted in the creation of the TJD Series of trips, which promise people who join them one-of-a-kind experiences in locations that are usually off the beaten path. Karam, along with her business partner Dennis Stever, have currently conceptualized TJD Series as group trips to remote destinations in the earth’s polar regions- which have, so far, taken people to countries like Finland, Norway, and Iceland, and yes, more such locations are being explored for newer instalments of these events. “I am honored to hold the seat at the forefront of this organization as its first female CEO,” says Asil Attar, CEO of @damasjewellery. “My career has been achieved through merit, hard work, and ambition. I am passionate about women empowerment and will champion this internally and externally. Women have an amazing ability to multitask and have empathy, whilst delivering the role in an emotionally engaged manner. I always say that as an ambassador for empowerment, I act with my mind, and think with my heart.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ With Damas being one of the region’s most prominent names in jewellery and watch retail, Attar looks like a natural lead for the organization, given her 25 years of experience in the industry, working with brands like Majid Al Futtaim, Al Yasra Fashion, Coach, and The Giorgio Armani Group. And the significance of her appointment at Damas isn’t lost on Attar- after all, she’s been someone who has been championing the cause of women in leadership roles all through her career. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Attar wasted no time in placing her personal stamp on a number of Damas’ initiatives. “Part of our vision is to speak to our female consumer in a language that is relatable, which they understand,” Attar notes. “Women are at the focus of our strategy. The ‘Feel Precious’ campaign that we launched in March with our Dubai Mall flagship launch did not use any of our products, like all the other typical global campaigns. Instead, we placed 24-carat gold leaf on our muse. This was a powerful message, a statement that says it is our customer who is our focus, and they are the precious ones.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Check out our full interview with Asil Attar--link in bio (https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/335234)! 👆 (✍🏽: @thisisaby, 📷: @damasjewellery) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #entrepreneurs #womeninbusiness #womenleadership #womenentrepreneurs #femaleentrepreneurs #leaders #leadership #business #startups #damasjewellery #damascollection #Farfasha #EffortlessChic #Chic #مجوهرات_داماس

"When @ArabNetme launched, the ecosystem was at a nascent stage, so we had a different role to play: we were helping to build an industry from the ground up. Our focus was in developing a platform for startups and investors to connect, engaging new corporates into the digitization sector, and connecting stakeholders across different markets to share insights and do business together. That’s really why the #ArabnetBeirut Conference was created, with the first edition launched in 2010. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There were 500 attendees, and it has been growing ever since. Today, Arabnet Beirut is the most influential digital conference in the Levant, and we are expecting to host over 3000 attendees in its tenth edition in June, which will include high-profile government officials, enterprise decision makers, investors, and entrepreneurs, from Lebanon and the MENA region, not to mention over 250 regional and international experts and speakers, which truly does emphasize how the ecosystem has matured. It also exemplifies how we have helped grow this market and bring people together, bringing first-time speakers to the region, and helping global companies enter the market. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We have so many inspirational stories to tell. @Careem co-founder Dr. Abdulla Elyas met his co-founders Mudassir Sheikha and Magnus Olsson at #ArabnetDubai in 2013. @Feel22beauty was a finalist in Startup Battle’s 2018 edition, and although it did not win the competition, the startup left the conference with an investment offer from a member 2of the jury present that day, who believed in its business model. HungerStation pitched at the first Arabnet event in Riyadh as a small startup, and it has since grown to become the market leader in food delivery in Saudi Arabia. @Souqalmal, one of the most funded fintechs in the region having raised over US$10 million, pitched at Arabnet Beirut in its very early days." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As @ArabNetME gets set for the 10th edition of #ArabnetBeirut in June, check out founder and CEO @OmarChristidis' reflections on his enterprise's journey, and what lies ahead on https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/334381, link in bio 👆

@HadiPartovi, a tech entrepreneur and angel investor known for his early bets on Facebook, @Dropbox, @Airbnb, and @Uber, is ready to embark on his next mission to teach kids how to code with @codeorg, a Seattle-based education non-profit dedicated to expanding access to computer science in schools around the world, of which he is the founder and CEO. The main reason for founding this global social-impact initiative is his belief that mastering computer science is no less than a life-giving skill. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Born in Tehran, Iran, the Partovi twins, Hadi and his brother Ali, currently the founder and CEO of Neo, a community of young engineers and the world’s top programmers, taught themselves to code on a Commodore 64, and feulling their passion for programming ever since. Upon earning a master’s degree in computer science from Harvard University, Hadi Partovi rose up the executive ranks at Microsoft, before he went about launching his own startups. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And now, he believes that every young person around the world deserves to be propelled forward in life by learning this specific skill. “This is a story about opportunity, and how we can expand who has access to that opportunity, what the jobs of the future will look like, and how we can ensure that everyone gets an opportunity." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “The most important thing everybody can learn is how to adapt to new technology. Many schools teach technology, but they teach kids how to use it, whereas we want to teach them how to create technology. And learning to create technology is important, not only because it leads to an opportunity, and not only because of the future of the job market, but because for kids, it’s fun and it teaches them creativity. Creativity is such a natural human desire, something that drives adults, and especially youth, but it doesn’t really exist in the school system.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Read about as Hadi Partovi shares his drive to teach coding to the next generation of entrepreneurs on https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/333632, link in bio! 👆 (✍🏽: @tashapupic, 📷: @codeorg)

"No matter how crazy your idea is, there are so many people that are here, in Bahrain, such as mentors, coaches, and venture capitalists who are opening their doors and hosting office hours in Bahrain for you to come and talk about your idea. So, I encourage you to explore the opportunities that are out there, because we will support you." Areije Al Shakar, Senior Vice-President and Head of Development Services at @BahrainDevelopmentBank (BDB) -who is also the Fund Manager at Al Waha Fund of Funds- discusses how her country's initiatives are enabling not just its own, but the region's entrepreneurial ecosystem. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In June 2018, BDB announced that the Al Waha Fund of Funds had successfully closed its US$100 million fundraising round, making it the first active venture capital fund of funds in the region. The fund’s purpose is to provide additional capital to innovative and technology-driven startups in Bahrain and across the Middle East through venture capital funds currently established in Bahrain as well as by attracting new funds to the region. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The formula for this new initiative is simple: the Al Waha Fund of Funds will distribute financing to existing global and regional VC funds, which will further allocate funding to startups. The fund has already allocated 45% of its inaugural $100 million to venture capital firms, namely @BECOCapital, Middle East Venture Partners, Wamda Capital, @500startupsmena, and European fund manager @FinchCapital, and aims to deploy the remaining part within the next couple of years. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Check out the story here (https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/332083), link in bio!👆(✍🏽: @tashapupic, 📷: @bahraindevelopmentbank) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #entrepreneurs #middleeast #BDB #BahrainDevelopmentBank #MENA #GCC #Bahrain #venturecapital #funding #startups #MENAfunding

It was March 2014, and Ahmed Tahnoon ( @aatahnoon) was in Japan’s culinary capital of Osaka when he was treated to a serving of #takoyaki, a popular Japanese snack, blissfully unaware that this was the moment that would transform his life as he knew it to be then. Tahnoon remembers: “After taking the first bite of the takoyaki, I had only one thought on my mind: ‘How come I’ve never tried this before?’” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This was the question that Tahnoon, an Emirati electronics engineer working with the government, tried to answer on his return to the UAE, as he attempted to find places in the country that served this dish that he was so taken up by. But his quest for takoyaki didn’t yield any satisfactory results, and this story would have ended here, had it not been for Tahnoon donning his entrepreneurial cap. Tahnoon decided that if there was no place in the #UAE serving takoyaki to his liking, then he’d create one of his own- and this endeavor began with him importing a takoyaki stove, along with some of the ingredients, from Japan. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “I had confidence in the product, and I was absolutely sure that I had no competition yet,” Tahnoon says. “And then, I started the first takoyaki kiosk in UAE at the Global Village, Dubai, in 2016.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Tahnoon decided to name his enterprise @Spheerz, a nod to the round shape that is characteristic of the takoyaki, and it was only a matter of time before his kiosk at the Global Village began to garner a fan following. In fact, the overwhelmingly positive feedback was what led Tahnoon to grow Spheerz further- September 2018 marked the launch of the Spheerz restaurant, armed with a full-fledged Japanese street food menu (which includes, besides its signature takoyaki and taiyaki as well), at Marina Cubes. Spheerz now also has a takoyaki cart that makes its presence felt at various pop-up events in the country, as well as a sub-brand called Yaki Box by Spheerz, which Tahnoon declares to be “the first Japanese BBQ box available through delivery” in the UAE. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Check out its growth story here (https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/331224), link in bio!👆(✍🏽: @thisisaby, 📷: @spheerz)

“Success doesn’t make you richer, smarter, prettier, or happier, it just gives you a choice. That’s all that it does. Sometimes people strive for success, and they miss the journey. Success is about today, right now, every moment; so, at the end of each day, I think to myself about what did I do that took me one step ahead," says Jo Malone, founder of @jolovesofficial on her second entrepreneurial innings, and why she believes success is a journey. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The story of Jo Malone serves as a testament that entrepreneurial spirit never fades. In 1983, the then 21-year-old Malone started up her fragrance and scented candle business @JoMaloneLondon from her kitchen, opened her first store in London in 1994, and five years later, sold the company to Estée Lauder Companies for an undisclosed amount, remaining its Creative Director until leaving the enterprise in 2006. Then, owing to a non-compete agreement signed with Estée Lauder, Malone was prevented from launching a new fragrance or skincare brand for five years. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “When it came towards the end of that period, I realized that the desire to create fragrance was just too powerful for me,” Malone remembers. “And so, I decided to try one more time, and see if I could build it again.” And that’s how the Jo Loves brand came to be, Malone’s new scent, bath, body and candle collection, which she launched in 2011. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Check out the full interview with Jo Malone: www.entrepreneur.com/article/330437 Link in bio! 👆 (✍🏽: @tashapupic, 📷: @jolovesofficial) https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/330437 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #joloves #jomalone #jolovesofficial #entrepreneur #femaleentrepreneur #middleeast

"To be a great leader, you need to empower your cadre to be leaders. Give them the space and freedom within their functions to perform and be creative. Being accessible to them is also key. Open communication channels, and support on macro and micro levels is paramount. For this, the leader needs to be aware of every little detail in the grand structure of the organization.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Reem BinKaram, Director of NAMA Women Advancement Establishment, is a leading light in the region’s social responsibility movement, which has moved from the margins to the mainstream, from being a bullet point on a PR strategy, to becoming a CEO’s top priority. Those living in the UAE will know that the government itself has been consistently raising the bar of paying-it-forward initiatives in the country, fostering and strengthening a sense of social responsibility across the public and private sectors. BinKaram manages different entities under the NAMA umbrella, like Sharjah Business Women Council, Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council, and NAMA’s educational and development arm Badiri Academy, with an overarching goal to empower women and shape an equitable world for them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Reem BinKaram's shares her tips for women entrepreneurs: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. Be a leader, not a manager. A leader inspires his/her following by setting an example and provides the needed support and backup to move the organization forward." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. Know that your position and skills define you, not your gender. You earned your position because you deserved it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. Support other women to grow professionally, and reach their potential. You know what is needed to make their journey easier. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 4. Keep learning. Stay up-to-date constantly about your sector, relevant industries and key players. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 5. Padmini Gupta, co-founder and CEO of #fintech #startup Rise ( @growwithrise), got started on the venture with CPO and co-founder Milind Singh after a personal experience: in 2015, after the Nepal earthquake struck in 2015, the Gupta family’s domestic helper asked for a large loan to help rebuild her family’s home. Though she had been living in the UAE for 15 years, she had no savings or credit to enable her to rebuild her home, as the common practice among low-income workers was to send all their earned income back home. “This made me realize that the financial sector is failing to cater to a large part of our population, especially to those that need it the most,” says Gupta. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ She noted that though the country (and region at large) offered a fast-growing market, it wasn’t as inclusive as it could be, especially for the most marginalized. “I started Rise to democratize access to essential financial services for low-income migrants, so that they can build a better financial future back home,” she says. “Being unbanked or under banked leaves millions of migrants open to exploitation by loan sharks and employers as well as unprotected to deal with life events or able to plan their retirement… If you are an expat in the UAE, you would probably have multiple companies call seeking to help you manage your wealth, open offshore accounts for you, give you loans or even help you plan your retirement and return home. Nobody was providing these services for low income migrants- now, we do." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The UAE-based startup presently enables the #UAE domestic help segment gain access to a bank account (through a partnership with @uabuae), assist remittance transactions (through a partnership with @UAEExchange), and will soon be launching insurance and investments in partnerships with global firms in both space. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Check out the full interview with Padmini Gupta--link in bio! 👆 (✍🏽: @pamdeleon_, 📷: @growwithrise) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #MiddleEast #GCC #socialentrepreneur #socent #fintechstartups #finance #startups #entrepreneurs #femaleentrepreneurs #growwithrise #technology

“The challenge is to communicate what can be done for companies through smart hiring,” says Sahiqa Bennett, who launched Searchie ( @searchieme), an AI-based tech platform aimed at revolutionizing the talent industry through smart matching, with husband and business partner Harvey Bennett (@harvey_searchie). “#AI is not a threat, but it helps the #recruitment teams hire faster and spend less time sourcing. It also saves a ton of wasted money on job boards, CV databases, job postings. So, if companies are going through digital transformation, Searchie would help transform the way they hire.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since launching the minimum viable product at the end of March 2018, the Searchie team tested the solution on a handful of potential employers, and took their feedback into consideration when developing the first version, which was released at the beginning of May 2018. Before long, the company started making revenue and expanded into 10 countries. The reason for this, Harvey explains, is that Searchie’s two main USPs –“a global network of #recruiters and a good use of emerging technology”– have led to them onboarding clients very quickly. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While the scale of their ambition is clear -"Transforming the industry not just from a technology perspective but from a planning, strategy and process perspective,” explains Harvey- the huge investor interest in their business did come as a surprise, forcing them to accelerate the company’s growth plans. Namely, the Searchie co-founders have already closed a US$500,000 part of their $2 million seed round with Hackers & Founders, a Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm, within their latest $250 million fund, making it the fund’s first MENA #investment. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Check out the full interview with Sahiqa and Harvey Bennett as they share how @searchieandsearchie aims to help companies transform the way they hire, and lessons they've learnt in the startup sphere— link in bio! 👆 (✍🏽: @tashapupic, 📷: @searchieme) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #artificialintelligence #techstartup #MENA #MiddleEast #MENAtechstartup #technology #startupfunding ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“An event is an experience- we are experience-driven at RiseUp; it's one of the values we have. We see a lot of events, a lot of summits, sector-specific summits, all that stuff, [that don’t focus on the experience], and the challenge with that is people who do it don't realize that the most important constituent for an event’s success isn’t its sponsor. The most important constituent is actually the attendee. So, if in your [event] design, you don't put the startup at the core of your value proposition, you fail; you fail miserably. As #Intelak, an aviation, travel and tourism incubator led by the @Emirates Group, @generalelectric and Dubai Tourism, celebrates its second year of supporting the UAE ecosystem, here's a look at one of the winners of its first cohort. @dubz.uae, founded by Omar Abou Faraj, Mustafa Maghraby and Samer Sobh, is a luggage pickup, storage and delivery service in Dubai, offering travelers time and comfort by getting bags picked up or dropped off, stored, and even checked in (yes, from your hotel or home, instead of the airport) during the day- a convenient service for every traveler. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And it's gaining traction too- besides joining and graduating from Intelak, in June 2018, @dnata, an air service provider and part of the Emirates Group, acquired a majority stake in DUBZ, which also saw it forging strategic relationships with @flydubai, @Saudia_Airlines and @flynas. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As for what’s next, with the boost from their partnership with dnata, the startup is looking for significant growth.
