@UnitedNations Police is #HeForShe. Thank you Police Advisor @luiscarrilhopc for the meeting this morning, and for your commitment to ensuring that the uniformed component of #UnitedNations peacekeeping is diverse and inclusive of women, reflecting the communities the United Nations serves. #EqualityFact: Currently only around 5% of all #UnitedNations uniformed Military, Police and Justice and Corrections Service personnel are female. Today, 26 June, marks the signing of the @UnitedNations Charter, 75 years ago. Excited to participate in a lecture reflecting on global developments not foreseen when the Charter was drafted but which, wisely used, could contribute to the realization of its purposes and principles. Our speaker will be Dr. David A. Bray, whose talk โ€˜Artificial Intelligence, the Internet and the Future of Data: Where Will We Be in 2045?โ€™ will examine the impact of technology on the mission of the #UN 100 years after its creation. Today, we launched our @UNWomen report โ€˜Progress of the Worldโ€™s Women 2019-2020: Families in a Changing Worldโ€™ which examines how the transformations in families impact womenโ€™s rights. As womenโ€™s rights have advanced over the past decades, families around the world have become a place of love and solidarity but also one where fundamental human rights violations and gender inequalities persist. Anchored in global data, innovative analysis and case studies, the report shows the diversity of families around the world and provides robust recommendations to ensure that laws and policies support todayโ€™s families and meet the needs of all their members, especially women and girls, with analysis of what it would cost to implement them. Among the trends observed: - The age of marriage has increased in all regions, while birth rates have declined, and women have increased economic autonomy; - Globally, a little over one third (38 per cent) of households are couples living with children; and extended families (including other relatives) are almost as common (27 per cent); - The vast majority of lone-parent families, which are 8% of households, are led by women, often juggling paid work, child-rearing and unpaid domestic work. Same-sex families are increasingly visible in all regions. As the report shows, families can be places of care, but can also bring conflict, inequality and, far too often, violence. Today, three billion women and girls live in countries where rape within marriage is not explicitly criminalized. But injustice and violations take other forms as well. In one out of five countries girls do not have the same inheritance rights as boys, while in others (a total of 19 countries) women are required by law to obey their husbands. Around one third of married women in developing countries report having little or no say over their own healthcare. READ REPORT โ€“ Link in bio.

Yesterday at the closing session of @UNWomen Executive Board. One of the key decisions that was adopted by the Board was #UNWomenโ€™s policies and procedures for tackling sexual exploitation, abuse and sexual harassment. The Board, noted with appreciation the independent victim-centered review of #UNWomen policies and procedures, including efforts to implement further institutional and cultural changes, and mechanisms for victim support, reporting and accountability. โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”#EqualityFact: In Jan 2019 @UnitedNations published results of an internal survey which showed that one in three #UN workers say they have been sexually harassed in the past two years. This level of transparency is critical if things are to change, so very encouraging to see the strong commitment to zero tolerance for sexual exploitation, abuse, and sexual harassment from our #UNWomen Executive Director #phumzilemlambongcuka

Today, June 19th is the International Day for the elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict. This year, the International Day calls attention to the need for a holistic survivor-centred approach that builds the resilience of affected individuals while minimizing the risk of re-traumatization, social ostracism, stigma and reprisals. Such an approach ensures that the safety and welfare of survivors is paramount. Started the day with a session, โ€˜The Importance of A Survivor-Centered Approachโ€™ co-hosted by the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, and the Permanent Mission of #Argentina to @unitednations, sharing best practices and lessons learnt in the implementation of a survivor-centred approach. โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€” #EqualityFact: The effects of conflict-related sexual violence, borne by the survivors and their children, echo across generations through trauma, stigma, poverty, poor health and unwanted pregnancy. The survivor-centred approach has several facets, including: medical and psychosocial assistance; sexual and reproductive health care; educational, economic, and livelihood support; justice for survivors and their children; and the end of impunity for perpetrators. A survivor-centred approach calls for greater attention to the physical and economic security of survivors, which includes mental, physical, and sexual health. Furthermore, this approach calls for support to trained service providers, including international and local civil society organisations, to ensure high-quality services for survivors. Several achievements of 2018 are highlighted in the report. Amongst others, UN Women supported: ยท The adoption of reform of 44 laws to strengthen womenโ€™s rights; ยท Capacity-building for more than 10,000 aspiring women leaders; ยท Better skills for almost 25,000 data producers and users to disaggregate data by sex; ยท The deployment of the essential services package to address violence against women in 48 countries; ยท Humanitarian assistance to 325,500 women and girls. We have also identified areas of slower performance and are taking corrective action. #BTS โ€“ prepping for #DayOfTheAfricanChild celebrated annually on June 16th. #DayOfTheAfricanChild honors those who participated in the Soweto Uprising in 1976 on that day. It also raises awareness of the continuing need for improvement of the #education provided to African children. In Soweto, South Africa, on June 16, 1976, about ten thousand black school children marched in a column more than half a mile long, protesting the poor quality of their education and demanding their right to be taught in their own language. Hundreds of young students were shot, and more than a hundred people were killed in the protests over the following two weeks. We are forever indebted to the young heroes who sacrificed their own lives for our right to education.๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ

In 2020, it will be 25 years since the Beijing Platform for Action set out how to remove the systemic barriers that hold women back from equal participation in all areas of life, whether in public or in private. Despite some progress, real change has been agonizingly slow for the majority of women and girls in the world. Today, not a single country can claim to have achieved gender equality. Multiple obstacles remain unchanged in law and in culture. As a result, women remain undervalued, they continue to work more, earn less, have fewer choices and experience multiple forms of violence at home and in public spaces. โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€” Excited to share our @UNWomen multigenerational campaign: โ€œGeneration Equality: Realizing Womenโ€™s Rights for an Equal Future.โ€ The Generation Equality campaign demands equal pay, equal sharing of unpaid care and domestic work, an end to sexual harassment and all forms of violence against women and girls, health-care services that respond to their needs and their equal participation. HAPPY #IWD everyone! โค๏ธ With technology and innovation playing an integral role in our everyday lives, it is not easy to imagine development in the 21st century without it. This yearโ€™s theme for International Womenโ€™s Day (8 March), โ€œThink Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Changeโ€, explores the ways in which innovation can work for gender equality, boost investment in gender-responsive social systems, and enhance public services and infrastructure that meet the needs of women and girls. โ€œInnovation is shaping and changing the way people live in every part of the world, so we have to be intentional about its use to positively impact the lives of women and girlsโ€, said UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka. โ€œItโ€™s a key component of development, a basic need for those living in poverty, and a far-reaching enabler of rights. Women and girls must have opportunities to contribute to both the design and execution of solutions affecting their livesโ€” and they are more than ready to do so.โ€
