All women and girls should be able to live safe, fearless and free and to enjoy sexual freedom. Such freedom means the freedom from having to rely on sex for survival, especially sex that puts you at risk of violence or even death. It means the freedom to make welcome choices, free from exploitation and the coercion of poverty and other vulnerabilities. Women should be able to freely participate in consensual sexual relations in a way that enhances their pleasure and self esteem. This includes freedom from repressive and stereotyping norms about female sexuality. #womensrights #womensrightsarehumanrights #freedommeans #BlessedBe #BlessedBeTheFruit #TheHandmaidsTale #WakeUp #HopeLivesInEveryName #feminism #girlpower #metoo #timesup #believesurvivors #nomeansno #neverthelessshepersisted #consent

Today is #WorldDayAgainstTraffickinginPersons. Although international law and the law in 158 countries criminalizes sex trafficking, trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation is the fastest growing criminal enterprise in the world, worth $99 billion a year—and 96 percent of its victims are women and girls. In #Malawi, despite the 2015 Trafficking In Persons Act, the country remains a source, destination and transit country for trafficking for sexual exploitation. Gaps in infrastructure, a lack of public knowledge about trafficking, and scarce data and other resources make women and girls vulnerable to traffickers who promise them jobs, marriage and education, sometimes within the country or beyond its borders. Coupled with the stigma many trafficking survivors face, they must overcome immense hurdles to obtain justice. Equality Now, along with our partners in the region, including People Serving Girls at Risk, are working to counter sex trafficking by fostering awareness and advocacy campaigns to ensure perpetrators are held to account for their crimes. Working together, we can #EndHumanTrafficking around the world. Check out our stories to learn more — and to test your knowledge. #EndSexTrafficking #WomensRightsAreHumanRights

If we are able, everyone one of us must commit to take action when we see the rights and dignity of women and girls being oppressed. Whether it’s speaking out publicly, writing a government representative, signing a petition, coming together with others in your community to discuss an issue, creating art, offering your time or donations to an organization, or simply telling ourselves “I can change this.” Whatever action you take, no matter how big or how small, you are standing up to injustice. You are making your voice heard. Change isn’t possible unless everyone’s voice has a chance to be heard and Equality Now is committed to amplifying the voices of women and girls in our communities and around the world. Are you? 50 years ago the world watched two men walk on the moon. This woman put them there. Margaret Hamilton led a team of software engineers who developed the onboard computer programs that powered NASA's Apollo missions, including the 1969 moon landing. Next week, the Court of Appeal in Tanzania will hear an appeal by the Attorney General against a 2016 High Court ruling that marriage under the age of 18 was illegal and directed the government to raise the minimum age of marriage to 18 for both boys and girls within one year. The state’s appeal is based on the claim that the disparity in the minimum age of marriage is a compromise to accommodate customary, traditional and religious values on marriage. Together, we can help end FGM and live in a world were girls are not at risk of mutilation. We began our work on FGM nearly thirty years ago, and in that time we’ve seen a huge turnaround of hearts and minds, including a landmark UN Resolution in 2012 to eliminate FGM globally. Today, at least 59 countries have laws against FGM and more communities are coming together to end the practice. Equality Now is committed to ending FGM everywhere, but to move forward in our efforts to eradicate FGM, every one of us must commit to engaging in discussions around gender equality within our families, communities, social networks, and at the national and international level. “For a woman to be sexual was seen as a sin, for her to have pleasure was a sin." Most people think female genital mutilation (FGM) is something that doesn’t happen in the #UnitedStates, but they’re wrong.
