Hi guys! I’m Jordan ( @jordhoes)! I’m a Family Medicine resident physician in Southern Oregon (and a T1D!), and I’m taking over @erikdouds account today to show how I get my 30 minutes of movement! ⁣ ⁣ Exercise is so important, guys. When we look at the Blue Zones, which are areas around the world where people live the longest (and happiest and healthiest lives), one of the things they all have in common is that they move every day, approx every 20 minutes! ⁣ ⁣ But this doesn’t mean they are out there running marathons, or doing crazy crossfit routines, or training for bodybuilding competitions. And it doesn’t mean you have to either! So often, getting exercise feels so inaccessible and daunting, but what the @bluezones teaches us that it doesn’t have to be that complicated! ⁣ ⁣ If we build movement naturally into our day and our lifestyles, rather than separating it out into discrete chunks, not only does it feel like less of a chore, but studies show it’s actually one of the best things for us in the long run! ⁣ ⁣ Regular movement is strongly linked to living longer, increases your insulin sensitivity, and decreases your blood pressure, risk for CVD and metabolic syndrome, the risk for some cancers, the risk of osteoporosis, and more! It can lead to better sleep, fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression, and can help you maintain your weight. And all of this is just scratching the surface of what exercise can do for your body and mind! ⁣ ⁣ This is why I’m so excited about what @erikdouds is doing! He is helping us all view movement through a different lens, and encouraging us all to move for 30 minutes a day (current recommendations are 150 minutes a week, which feels like a lot, but if you break it up into 10 minute chunks through out your day really isn’t!).⁣ ⁣ I actually just moved to a city that is trying to be more like the Blue Zones, and it’s super inspiring! started biking to work this week, and hope to keep it up for a long time! How do you get your 30 minutes? Share the template in the stories, and tag @erikdouds and @jordhoes ! Happy moving! ✨💪🏼🏃🏽‍♀️

#T1DTIPTUESDAY : HOW TO MEET PEOPLE WHEN TRAVELING THE WORLD 🇩🇪🇳🇿🇺🇸 I opened an email this morning to see who is participating in the 30 Minutes of Movement 7 Day Challenge (link in bio). Nebraska, Germany, British Columbia, North Carolina, Australia, and a whole handful of other places all coming together to...move. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ With this international crowd, and as friends like @abbyjdavid jet-set to Europe, I want to share tips on how you can meet others (especially #T1Ds) as you travel: 🏡Facebook: search the "groups" tab for ANY category. While visiting Vancouver, B.C. this weekend, I'll be staying with Maureen for a second time because of a Facebook group called Young & T1! 🚴🏽‍♀️Meetup.com: Those 10,000+ miles of biking would NEVER have happened if @annalisavdbergh and I did not meet because of the "Type 1 Diabetes Meetup group" in NYC that has 500+ members. Thank you Jonathan. ⬇️Download the @BeyondType1 app to find people living with type 1 diabetes located nearby. Also a stellar place to get questions answered 🦋JDRF has offices across the US. Coach Pat, Coach PK, Emily from @pancreas_pals, and so many other friendships have been made because of JDRF. Special shoutout to Thu from JDRF San Diego for being so helpful over the years. ⚠️Ask for help!!!! When you are lost, ask a question. You'll see me asking this community for help all the time, "Does anyone know...Who here can...Where is the best...?" - This photo is during a hiking trip with my childhood best friend @partytheonemanmarty in New Zealand. About to set off next week on another epic adventure with @connectedinmotion to do the Chilkoot trail. More details soon! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What are your travel tips? “One day I decided to move...” @carlajeanmedley 🚲🏃‍♀️🏕 Both these women have inspired me to go further and farther than I ever imagined. Join me this week in a 7 day challenge to use our bodies for 30 minutes every day. There’s a printable worksheet if you follow the link in bio. Here’s what you can expect from me: ✅Endless enthusiasm ✅Yoga, walks, runs, maybe bike ✅Asking others to share their story ✅An extra heap of enthusiasm 🤩Spontaneous prizes for anyone who gets involved If all goes well, then this challenge can make its way back into our hearts. UNTIL THEN, GET MOVING!! Tag those friends you want to bring along!!!!!! #diabadass

30 MINUTES OF MOVEMENT CHALLENGE STARTS...TOMORROW! ☕️🏕🐠 Grab your coffee and MOVE (in any way). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Dedicate the next 7 DAYS to move for a half an hour at any point in the day. You'll be joined by some of my favorite people who will share how they stay active. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you live with #type1diabetes, the way to capture those delicious benefits from working out is to move every 24 hours: ✅Increase your insulin sensitivity ✅Reduce those post-meal blood sugar spikes ✅Cardio is good for your heart, lungs, eyes, and uhhh everything in your body?! Keep your eyes open for details 👀 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Morning photo shoots by @annalisavdbergh Need some inspiration from @michelleobama? "Exercise is really important to me - it's therapeutic. So if I'm ever feeling tense or stressed or like I'm about to have a meltdown, I'll put on my iPod and head to the gym or out on a bike ride along Lake Michigan with the girls." - Shoutout to the sponsors: @seatosummitgear / @aspire_eyewear / @arcteryxsoho

#T1DTIPTUESDAY : HOW DO I FIND TRAINING PARTNERS? 🚲 🌟 🍻 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Runners 🏃‍♀️ @typeonerun is where casual 5Ks and 14 milers happen #leavenoonesbehind ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Cyclists 🚴🏻‍♀️ I’m going to recommend an ADA Tour de Cure because registration is “low” cost at $200. Plus, that is where I met @carlajeanmedley ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Swimmers 🏊‍♀️...any help from the community? The guru is @ambrau cause she swam around Manhattan - by herself. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Basketball ⛹🏻‍♂️ @robhowe21 is your go-to resource or @scottkjohnson. Find them at AADE in Houston shootin hoops ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Scuba squad 🦈 @scubatrasm / @t1dchick / @gwbrzozowski are shark food when checking blood sugars under the sea ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Wow. Little pat on my back for pulling those names out of a hat. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The point is...we are everywhere. THEY GIVE YOU A COACH 🤯💪🏽🚲⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Every entry to a JDRF charity ride comes with one free coach! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Are they lovable? Coach Pat (all the way on the left) makes his own honey and chapstick. Thank goodness because those magical bee products kept my lips alive in the desert sun of California, Arizona, AND New Mexico. Thanks coach! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Are they certified? PK Steffen ( @pksteffen) is a Level III coach. I know that is at least three levels more of cycling than I have. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Will they take YOU not having a bike as an excuse? Nope. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Do these coaches have some sort of angels helping them? Thu (in the salmon top) is remarkable. I love her. She makes it so all these rad people show up when Annalisa and I decide to make San Diego a pitstop for @milesofportraits. That makes us feel pretty darn great. Thanks Thu. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Oh, YOU can get SCOTT or ERIK (me) as virtual cheer coaches when we host our ride challenges! "You can't be what you can't see" ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Why do I ride? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Diagnosis causes doubt. Not knowing, or not having the answers, is what kills dreams. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I remember Troy ( @scubatrasm) sharing how scuba diving with type 1 diabetes would not be possible. At least, that is what his doctor said. He would have to see people like Jerry ( @gwbrzozowski) to know that underwater blood sugar management is totally a thing (right?!) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There are many "what if" statements that float around with identity. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Why I ride is to give anyone dealing with doubt a person to point to: "Look mom, Annalisa and Erik are off biking across America. Can I go do that?" ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Tomorrow, I'll invite you to come ride with me. But we will save those details until then. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Can't wait to learn more about YOUR story 🌟 - Head over to @scottkjohnson to see what is planned for Fourth of July. - 📸Pool noodle image by @annalisavdbergh while standing up on a cliff - #gowild #diabadass #tourdecure #ridetocure @pearlizumiofficial

WHAT ARE YOUR NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS 🌟🤯 Shout them out in the comments⤵️ RE-align. RE-energize. RE-commit. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m buzzzzing off an entire WEEK of interviews with my close friend @mattscottgw. Highlights? Too many. One way I bring goals into the world is to SPEAK THEM OUT LOUD. It’s the 1st day of the 7th month. This year is flying by! 🎙One 2019 goal is to learn from OTHER communities. 20+ interviews in SF definitely tackled that. 📸 Collaborate more. SO good spending time with a creative man that I admire and have seen grown over the years. Matt, glad we “technically” went to the same high school. 🏔 More videos!!! Too much to edit which is WAY TOO GOOD of a problem to have. PEARL iZUMi weekend, Miles of Portraits: South West, Tour de Cure: Maine, New World CBD filming in Salem, too too too much goodness. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ RE-ALIGN. RE-ENERGIZE. PUT THIS ON YOUR MEDICAL BRACELET ⚠️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Which crowd do you fall in? A) Don't wear an ID ever B) Old-school stainless steel chain C) Dog tag D) Sports-style wristband ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Back in the day, I felt like my grandfather wearing the metal chain bracelet that had my emergency information engrained on it. There were so many scratches in it from use over the years that eventually it had to be replaced. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The thing that annoyed me about the metal bracelet was the "swoosh" and bouncing when running, swimming, or moving. Sure, the occasion compliment about wearing jewelry as a man was nice. However, it was time for something new. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @RoadID first came into my life through a gift. My aunt is a serious cyclist and thought our family could use IDs when out on the go. I first got one that fit on the laces of a shoe 👟 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now a days, you will always spot a bright bracelet on my wrist. The info for emergency contact, “GIVE ME JUICE IF PASSED OUT”⚠️ and "Type 1 Diabetes" all fits onto a Road ID. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It's safe to say that any person should wear a medical ID. You cannot plan for emergencies. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What letter are you? A,B,C,D? Let's see what is most popular ⬇️ - #livebeyond #medicalid #lowbloodsugar - photo by @annalisavdbergh

DID I PASS OUT?✨☠️🤯 10 years makes you an "expert" in something. With no margin for error, you only need to miss the target once when managing diabetes to be in a dangerous situation. Two days ago, 150 lbs of my bathrobed 5' 11" body came tumbling down in a split moment upon the couch (almost) and into Matt's lap and knee, "Did I pass out?" Luckily, I am fine. Luckily, I have begun to be bold enough to share what can happen with this life-long illness with my friends, strangers, and family. Luckily, I have organizations like Beyond Type 1, JDRF, ADA, and many others fighting on my behalf. Not sure what the balance is between sharing "real life" with diabetes that IS scary verse the positive aspects of this disease. For me, this is the wake up that others need to know I live with an invisible #disability; they may be there to catch you when you fall. NYC MARATHON WITH @BEYONDTYPE1 🏃‍♂️🤩🤯 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Who inspires me to run beyond? 🌱 @amylmck who encouraged me to push beyond that half-marathon distance 🏃‍♀️ @nerdscanfight who ran a 10K with me in Austin, TX and crushed marathon training in the Texas humidity 👩‍👧 @maryalessandraa who gained a deeper and bigger reason to run the NYC marathon year-after-year-after-year 🧢 @jamesmansf who didn't doubt me in the 14 mile run in LA, came to build #JuiceBoxWall, and is an overall great human being. - And many, many, many others who came before me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I run to be a role model so newly diagnosed patients have someone to point to as proof. The one pictured is about half of that (so get 2!) ☕️Plug in your battery pack every time you stop for coffee 🥈Purchase dual-port USB chargers so you can plug in 2 electronics at once - Annalisa and I have spent five days straight in the wilderness of Alaska; slept under star filled skies in the desert of Arizona; woke up to snow in the mountains of New Mexico; and generally spend a lot of time in places with no cell service (especially if you have AT&T😈). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @BioLite has powered us everywhere using a combination of rechargeable external batteries + a solar panel THAT HAS BATTERY STORAGE aka can also charge electronics at night. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Don't let living with this disease keep you from the wilderness 🏕Tag your adventure buddy that could use these tips⤵️ - #energyeverywhere #optoutside #gowild #croctheworld #biolite #livebeyond - 📸 by the talented @annalisavdbergh

T1Ds IN THE WILD🌻⛰🧗‍♀️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ NEW (future) COURSE ADDED: "How to Hike with #Type1Diabetes" ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I put out a 24 hour challenge and you all showed up. We are only TWO short from hitting 30 Founding Members, but close enough 👍🏼👨‍🏫 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Do you remember the first time wilderness + managing diabetes came up? ✅Wanting to join my childhood best friend ( @partytheonemanmarty) for 1 month in New Zealand ✅Hitting the trails only to realize not enough low snacks were packed (@amymckinnonnutrition) ✅Exploring the saguaro cactus and feeling "accepted" because my new friend brought extra snacks (@carlajeanmedley) - (longer story): Marty invited me down to New Zealand to kick off 2016; I was in the customs line as the ball dropped. This trip is where I learned about "bounce boxes," how to calculate calories for days in between towns, bumping up against fears of running out of jelly beans, but also sticking to my plan of wearing a pump the entire time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Before leaving on the trip, I remember the blank look of the doctor's face when asking deeper questions, "What's the best way to carry all the medical sh*t I need out there?" ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here is something you'll never hear: 🌟All of my medical supplies got stripped out of their original packages and put into ziplock containers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This does not fall into "medical" advice, but at the same time does. How can you fit a month of sites and reservoirs into a backpack? How do you split up shipments to make sure you can stay on the trail in a safe way? Are jelly beans or honey jars the better choice? - Remember, you can go into the wilderness with type 1 diabetes. - I cannot wait to bring together MANY minds to guide you through how to pack a backpack, what snacks are good to keep BGs up, and ways to stay on trail longer. - Need inspiration now? Our press release in FULL: (www.milesofportraits.com/upsanddowns) . NEW YORK, NY, March 4th, 2019 – Miles of Portraits revealed Monday that "The Ups and Downs of Touring with Type 1” will be the cover story of Adventure Cyclist’s April 2019 in print issue. The essay by Annalisa van den Bergh with photography by Erik Douds and Annalisa, tells the story of their 1,000-mile bicycle trip around Alaska through the lens of the @Dexcom blood sugar graphs they both use to manage their type 1 diabetes (T1D). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A first of its kind, the cover photo is a bold and stigma-breaking choice. To have a person with a disability injecting herself with insulin on the cover of a magazine with 52,000 subscribers and 100,000+ readers per issue sends a powerful message. It celebrates those living with disabilities and underlines the sentiment that, as Erik says, despite our limitations, we can go anywhere and do anything. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “This is how we make our invisible disease visible.” (Annalisa van den Bergh) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1.25 million Americans live with type 1 diabetes yet it’s still largely misunderstood. Through these blood sugar graphs that guide the reader through the feature article, Annalisa shares anecdotes from the road. The piece also acts as an educational tool, illustrating to the reader what it’s like to live with this chronic condition that in short, requires one to do all the work for their non-functioning pancreas. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “We meet so many people on the road because of this little patch on our arms that relays blood sugar readings every five minutes. It becomes a conversation starter and an educational tool.” (Erik Douds) ### . #disability #awareness #csr #milesofportraits #livebeyond

Thank you @amdiabetesassn for bringing Jean into my life. . She is a type 2 diabetic. I am a type 1 diabetic. Now, raise your hands if you think we SHOULD NOT be friends 👋 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hi, yes. You are like me. Type 1 diabetes is a different disease than type 2 [insert rant about what is 'fair']. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Wait, wait. What if we changed our mindset? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Do you want someone who understands? Do you want an ally? Do you want THIS LOVING FACE CHEERING FOR YOU? Yes, yes, YES! Jean shared her story about being the last person to finish the Tour de Cure. When she turned the final corner, there were crowds waiting, cheering her on: “GO RED RIDER!!” You could image the tears - or watch them in our interview from 2018😭 Hearing her words changed my mind forever. She makes me feel like a super hero. When we go on hikes, she grabs low snacks for me. I’m there to give her a guiding hand as we march past saguaro cactus 🌵 We are friends for life. The next stage of our community is people living with type 1 and type 2 coming together for a common fight. Last post was about partnerships and no other organization is in a better position to lead a CHARGE, a MARCH, a RALLY to advocate for better solutions than the American Diabetes Association. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ADA, you changed my perception about people living with diabetes. Now, I challenge you to tap into stories like Jean and I coming together to bring about change. You need to invite @beyondtype1 to bring their audience, you need to invite @jdrfhq to bring their tribe too, and you all need to do more together. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Until then, show up to a Tour de Cure. hey there, i’m back. . We left off during a week of love and I wanted to pick that back up. The reason I disappeared is to work on those things that are more important than Instagram - relationships with yourself and others. Another trip is about to launch and I needed some down time. . There is a group of humans that have become a close family because we all escaped together. . After cycling across America in 2017, I joined @connectedinmotion up in British Columbia to hike the North Coast Trail. . Why I love Connected in Motion is that they plan trips for adults living with type 1 diabetes that pushes all skill levels outside their comfort zone. Here is a list of obstacles - propane chemical burn, miles of cobble stone rocks, mud for days, arctic cold water, howling winds, and the journey started with a ferry that dropped us off on a rocky shore. . We cried. We laughed. We ate a lot of food. I ate a lot a lot of food. . If you are looking for your T1D tribe than CIM is it. You can attend one of their slipstreams in partnership with @beyondtype1. I promise that you will love it. . Jen, you are a shining star in our community. From coast to coast, everyone is proud of your work. . @crocs x @revo

What would you say is your “it”? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Matt was listening to me last night talk about Valentine's Day and how it sets many of us up for failure. That is when he said this piece of advice. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ He heard me talk about expectations overcoming reality and how that can lead to negative emotions, something many of you may be feeling this week. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What I love about Matt ( @mattscotgw), and the list could be long, is that he has hears everything you say and then reacts. "It's what you make of it," does not only apply to Valentine's day or any holiday. This nugget of knowledge can be taken with you every single day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For those of you living with #T1D, you know that this disease is so much more than counting carbs. We manage something that plays a role in every decision of everyday life. I remember laying in the hospital bed thinking about my outlook for this diagnosis, "Where can I find that silver lining?" ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, saying change your perspective is difficult. If you could feed off my energy this week, there is a link in my bio to schedule a 15 minute call (or Facetime.) Here to listen to YOU. Thank you to everyone who has ever been there for me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What's your it? Let me know below ❤️ . [Want more?] Listen to Matt's podcast 180 degrees of Impact. It’s been a long climb to a healthy tummy ☁️ . After all the questions about CBD, I rounded up the top to answer for you all: 1) What’s wrong with your stomach? Junior year of college everything went down hill. Nothing terrible, but terrible. It wasn’t “emergency” status but something was definitely wrong. That led to a scope going down my throat. They discovered duodenal ulcers. No bueno. 💊 The solution? Antacids. 2) When antacids failed, what did you do next? @amylmck convinced me to go on a gut-healthy diet, aka anti-inflammatory, aka plant-based. I started by making vegetarian breakfast (chia seeds, smoothies, oatmeal), then worked on lunch recipes (now crushing big salads or lentil soup), and eventually dinner (soups, stir fries, anything green). Buy “Oh, she glows” & Amy’s recipe ebook if you need inspiration. 3) Did becoming a flawed-vegetarian fix everything? Nope. But stomach went from a C- to a solid B. That is when a few other things were added: 💧 16-32 oz of water in the morning 🚲 30+ minutes of exercise - even if it is only walking (thank you NYC streets) ☕️ avoiding coffee in the morning (Confession, I fail around friends) 🍻 No beer. Reduce alcohol all around 🐄 Replace dairy with almonds and cashews 🍯 CBD drops 4) So CBD solves everything? Do you see the list above? It’s a tool in the toolkit 5) What’s your dosages look like? I take 3-5 drops from a 500 mg/dl little bottle (known as a “tincture”) in the morning. Sometimes night. @newworldcbd also sells honey sticks that I’ll use to treat lows while stressed out in the city walking everywhere - solves two problems in one — or kills two birds with one stone (please explain how that metaphor makes sense.) 6) Does it give you a “high”? Not for me. And it shouldn’t. Some of my friends describe a soothing wave when vaping CBD. I describe it like an Advil for your stomach, but a good Advil — cause Advil is bad for gut health to make things clear. - How is my stomach now? Overall, I’d give it a B+ and say bad days are triggered by stress or alcohol. - Would I recommend CBD? Yes, for ~$40 it’s worth the experiment. And drink more tea ✔️ . #newworldfrenzy #cbd #t1d #guthealth #plantbased #dietplan

Partner in crime @annalisavdbergh . Taking a break from the #tourdeREI to explore Mass MoCA. One of the hardest parts of being a professional traveler is to balance work & play. You must feel like every day of our life is play. Yet, the places that have the smallest amount of content from me are often multi-day visits in one place. My days disappear behind the screen, preparing talks with Annalisa, driving around, and figuring out the 15 problems that come from doing everything with a bootstrap budget. ☕️CBD AMBASSADORS☀️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My tummy is always scoring a B+, which is not an A- and definitely not an A.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When the doctor asks, “Is there anything else?” I bring up my stomach issue. I've had surgery with a scope checking out both entrances to my body (use your imagination) 😩 with no real results.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That’s how CBD made it into my MORNING ROUTINE. No, it’s not marijuana.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ CBD is a cannabinoid derived from hemp that affects the endocrine system (endo = inside). My friends who use CBD have noticed benefits with sport injuries, stress from city life, and stomach problems.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s legal across the U.S. and the FDA is only now really letting researchers start studying the true effects.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I like to think of CBD as an added tool in the toolkit to help my body manage all the side-effects of an autoimmune disease.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you use it in your daily life (also, thanks for making it this far in the post), then use the link in my bio to apply being an ambassador for New World CBD.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The company’s marketing director is Justin, who lives with type 1 diabetes. We met while biking across America in the middle of nowhere Kentucky. He used CBD every day while biking to help with sore muscles.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m excited to begin work with this company and want to bring YOU on as part of the team.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you have any questions let me know!!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Oh and use the code “Diabadass” if you order any for a discount ✌🏻⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #cbd #newworldfrenzy #t1d #ambassadors #alternativemedicine

Balance. Self-care. Priorities. . Three topics on my mind for 2019. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I cannot express how much having a coach can drive your life forward. Of course, you are the vehicle providing the fuel. However, sometimes you feel like your driving without having a set of directions. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Mo is my former roommate that I lost to Los Angeles and his love, Liz. He is a life-coach. He's someone I admire since he has never paused too long to overthink his decisions. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You may be like me floundering over the "big picture." What dreamers need is someone to listen and transform those words into small "next steps." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Every conversation I take the responsibility of following up with an email on what we talked about and what is expected of me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Every conversation. Every goal. Every tick off the checklist. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ All are investments in myself. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That is what keeps the wheels turning. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What are you investing in this month? . #lifecoach #motivation #nextsteps #quote

She flew in from Austin, Texas for the Diabadass Mastermind ✈️ . How do we support ideas for the type 1 diabetes community? Trust the flow ⚡️ . As a creative, I struggled to communicate specific plans for this weekend (thank you @typeoneday for putting up with me). Every sentence ended with, it depends on... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here are some values that guided the Diabadass Mastermind: ✅Recommit to those goals from the New Year ✅Form a deeper bond with others who are nearby (bring digital into reality) ✅Change reactive to proactive ✅Convince loved ones to spend a weekend in the Hamptons 🚫Will not feel like "work" ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our conversations created clarity and feedback that can be used for the next mastermind. "Are you the ‘official’ photographer?" Yes. Yes I am. . Switching career paths or pursuing your dream creates self-doubt. You should hear the change in voice from the beginning to the end of this trip when people ask, "What do you do for a living?" . That outward confidence goes a long way for others and yourself. Answering "YES" opens more doors and new opportunities than doing the opposite. . So YES, this photo by @annalisavdbergh is of the "official" race photographer. . A local picks picks me up after breakfast to photograph the 108 mile Soggy Bottom Race. This is the first time I get to capture cyclists out in the mountains getting caked in mud. Check in tomorrow to see some of the photos. . I'm still at the beginning of this journey with a lot to learn. . Cyclists with #type1diabetes consider food AND water as emergency supplies 🚨 So what happens when a 15 minute ride goes for 2 hours? . A local recommends exploring Mineral Creek. You learn this knowledge because everyone wants to talk to bikers who are new to town: "The first question is free," I always joke. . Annalisa and I begin exploring on a sunny day expecting to turn around quickly. Making it to the river is the first goal. Upon arriving, we see a bridge to cross. Ok, let's take it. . A small climb is easy with unloaded bikes. Around the corner is the waterfall in the second photo (swipe left). How could we not continue? . Two British tourists pull up in their truck and tell us about an abandoned gold mine at the end of the road. "Do you all have some water in your car?" I wonder because the quick ride is turning into an adventure. . When debating if we can continue or not, I run through a small checklist: 1) How many carbs do we have on us? Luckily, Nature's Bakery does an impressive job with 20g of carbs per fig bar (2 per pack) 2) Do we have enough water? The 2L @Hydrapak is half-full, or half-empty. 3) When will we turn around? Before every trip, I begin a stopwatch to know how long we have been out. Plus, a timer every hour to check in ⏱ . We make it to the end of the road and capture a photograph of the mine. Once again, listening to locals pays off. . Have you ever kept wanting to go around the corner to discover more? . #explorealaska #adventurecycling #hydrapak #t1d #diabadass #livebeyond #disabilityawareness #localguides #valdez #bikepacking #fromwhereidrone #dronestagram #optoutside @rei @arcteryx @diabetessportsproject #diabetessportsproject

Bike touring the Richardson Highway on assignment for @adventurecycling. A story about missing the ferry.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "You can roll your bikes on last minute," a man behind the counter tells us on a rest day.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Almost a year ago when traveling from Victoria to Port Angeles, I was the last person to board the ferry. An employee actually escorted me down the stairs with Dark Roast (🚲). We tied the bike to the large metal door that seals off the ship. This time was different.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Annalisa and I try to look up the schedule but the ferry website was designed in 1990s. That is how you know it is run by the state, am I right? Every single ferry leaving on a Tuesday or Thursday seems to depart at 7:30 a.m. But what if it is 7:00 a.m.?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After wrapping up breakfast, we arrive while RVs and cars are still being boarded. Perfect. The time happens to be 6:50 a.m.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "Two tickets please," Annalisa asks.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "You have to arrive 15 minutes before departing. Coast Guard rules." Guess 'last minute' means a little bit longer than that.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We argue with the guy that bikes can obviously board the ferry if cars are still getting on. "Security" sounds pretty silly when talking to bicyclists.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The ferry departs and we have to wait TWO more days for it to return. As my blood begins to boil, a sea otter pops up. This little creature was floating around on his back without a care in the world. It felt like a sign to sit back, relax, and enjoy everything else around.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Get ready to see what we discover on these bonus days. Here is a photo from our afternoon hike.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Who else is guilty of missing their flight or ferry?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #alaska #biketour #valdez #weekendwanderer #alaskaair #iflyalaska #visitalaska #adventurecyclist #purpleplant #nature @revo #behindthelens #buyapairgiveapair

Bike touring Valdez on assignment for @adventurecycling. All small town competitions bring a smile to my face.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Do you know the nickname of Valdez?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you said, "Little Switzerland," than you deserve an award 🥇 .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I describe the city as "Little New Zealand," reflecting on my time hiking part of the Te Araroa. What's crazy is that Kiwis (people from NZ) have traveled to Alaska to compete in a week-long international wood carving contest.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Competitors create holiday air as wood scraps put off that ‘fresh cut’ aroma for spectators to breath in. After the final touches are put on this horse, he will take a blow torch to darken the wood for the panel of judges to submit their scores.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Have you found yourself keeping a mental scorecard in a small town contest?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #adventurecycling #adventurecyclist #alaska #valdez #salmon #weekendwanderer #alaskaair #iflyalaska #visitalaska #alaskacruise #woodcarving #newzealand #smalltown #contest #alaskacanopyadventures

Biking touring Valdez on assignment for @adventurecycling. Solomon Gulch Hatchery. . You can see the hatchery from town, making it the perfect rest day bike trip. About three miles in, we stop by the management center where they direct us further down the road: "Do you really want to bike that far?" Yes, especially with unloaded bikes. . One question I am curious about is the between a fish farm and a hatchery? From interviews and a self-guided tour, I’ll try to answer this question. . The Solomon Gulch Hatchery exists as a non-profit entity to produce a predictable and stable supply of salmon that commercial fishermen harvest out in the ocean. Salmon eggs are raised to juveniles and are released to migrate into the ocean. On bi-annual cycle, the fish raised in this hatchery return to their home up salmon ladders, where workers collect their eggs to stock future populations. . Operational costs for the hatchery are covered 100% by fees related to salmon fishing (estimated at $4,000,000 per year). . On the other hand, fish farms are private entities that raise a stock of fish in netted areas that are fed nutrients until harvested and sold commercially. Concerns arise around non-native fish escaping the netted area, pollution from concreted schools of fish, and nutrient quality because of the feed. . Please correct me if I am wrong. . One suggestion I have for the hatchery is that they should sell smoked salmon for all the tourists 😋 . Anyone else taking short bike rides to smooth out their blood sugars? . #adventurecycling #adventurecyclist #alaska #alaskacruise #valdez #salmon #weekendwanderer #alaskaair #iflyalaska #visitalaska #hatchery #fishingseason

WINNER ANNOUNCED: Stephanie Sanders has caught herself a new pair of Pearl Izumi PRO Escape shorts and a Versa T jacket 🎣 . Residents in Valdez can reel in “pinks” swimming back to the Solomon Gulch Hatchery. I've never seen the fins of so many fish breaking the surface along the shore that you could reach in and grab one with your hands. . There is a commotion as seagulls, sea lions, and fishermen all get their fair-share of fatty fish for the season. The birds wait for a salmon to plop into the rocks, sea lions dive deep and breach the water actively feeding, and fishermen cast their line to get their daily total. .
