Here is #kriskristofferson around the time I first realized he was my hero. Starring with the great Ellen Burstyn, directed by @martinscorsese_ in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. I remember his song “Help Me Make It Through The Night” in the opening of John Huston’s brilliant, Fat City. Singing songs for Cesar Chavez and fighting for workers rights. Happy Birthday, Kris.
Seize the day. Make your lives extraordinary. This was a gift from director Peter Weir to the cast of #DeadPoetsSociety - out thirty years ago today. The poem is by a great Australian poet Gwen Harwood. Words can never contain, as music does, the unsayable grace that cannot be defined yet leaps like light from mind to mind.
I loathe hearing myself talk, but if you don’t, here’s a bit of what I had to say at BAM last week. Thank you to @bam_brooklyn for the honor - it was a highlight to be in the room with Walter Mosley - and to my friend @bobby_cannavale for being there. God Bless, Brooklyn.
People keep asking me where to get our @SexHawkeBlack shirts, they are in stock now at the link in bio. Sex, drugs and rock and roll included with each purchase!
Hot diggity dog. Thank you for these words, Justin Chang. #BlazeMovie is out on DVD today.
Yes, my son and I remember this GREAT night. His version is a little different than mine.
Last night at the #Stockholm premiere. I’m crazy about the bird’s-eye view of the Celeste Bartos Theatre and my ridiculously talented co-star Noomi Rapace. The film is out today!
I worked with Seymour Cassel for the first time when I was 19. We shot in Alaska. In a film about a wolf. He showed me all of Cassavetes work off homemade VHS tapes in his hotel room. Teaching me about Gena Rowlands, improvisation and wildness. Anyone who ever met him remembers. For years after White Fang, we were friends. He was irreverent. He was uninhibited. He was awake -- all the time. The next time I worked with him was in a little known film called Staten Island -- might be one of his greatest performances. Brilliant as ever. God Bless you, Seymour.
Had the best time celebrating @bendickeymusic and his new album and saluting our run with @roundaboutnyc for True West. Hard to say why it was so special. Mostly because of the friendship present and people coming together to support one another and honor Sam Shepard. Thanks to everyone who showed up. By the way, link in bio to see Ben’s show at @boweryballroom on Wednesday night! As always, he lights up the room and he did so alongside some killer musicians who joined him onstage at our party. @amosshart's performing Hank Williams “Ramblin’ Man” is a reason to live. @hamiltonleithauser is pure rock and roll. Charlie @sextonplace sprinkled his magic fairy dust making everyone shine. And my daughter @maya_hawke even joined Ben on stage for a gorgeous duet. Big thank you from my partner in crime Paul Dano and myself to everyone who came out. And special thanks to Todd Haimes of Roundabout, Louis Black, Beth Blofson, Amelia Young and Erika Pinktipps who made it happen.
Puppy love with Georgia and Jett. #NationalPuppyDay
totally tubular, @maya_hawke. #StrangerThings3
I just look at this picture over and over. #WillieNelson is one of the reasons Ben Dickey and I discovered Blaze Foley’s music. His cover of IF I COULD ONLY FLY, in a way conjured our film #BLAZEmovie. To see Ben playing at Luck Ranch and getting to meet and hang with Willie does a heart good. They are two souls that invite others to be their best. Thanks Willie. Thanks for everything. @bendickeymusic @willienelsonofficial
@brigittelacombe came to the theater and took these shots backstage at #TrueWest. She was a long time friend of Sam Shepard’s — she took the iconic photos of him for his play collections, as well as many others. I’m grateful to her eye for capturing these memories. Especially grateful for the friendship of Paul Dano.
Good Lord Bird, told with wit, grace and wisdom by the great author James McBride, is one of my favorite books and won the National Book Award in 2013. Bringing this story to the screen has been a passion project of mine. Today makes it official and I'm looking forward to working with @Showtime, James McBride, director Anthony Hemingway @ShinyBootz, my co-writer Mark Richard, my producing partner and wife Ryan, Jason Blum, Jeremy Gold and Marci Wiseman of @Blumhouse, Brian Taylor and David Schiff. Read more at the link in bio.
Here's the trailer for #Stockholm, another new movie coming this spring. Based on a crazy true story and also starring #NoomiRapace, who is a total badass. In theaters April 12.
Just completed a two-show day of #TrueWest on Broadway so sending my gratitude to everyone at the #SpiritAwards, especially my friend and costar Amanda who accepted this award on my behalf! It has been an honor to play Reverend Toller in the great Paul Schrader’s #FirstReformed. Thank you, Paul, @mingey, @cedtheentertainer, Phillip and all of our cast and crew.
@vincentdonofrio is one of the greatest friends you could ask for and he's one of the greatest actors I know. He's now adding the Director feather to his cap with The Kid. Vincent brought me along with our Magnificent Seven co-star @prattprattpratt (one of the finest fisherman, hunters, actors, and general studs I’ve ever encountered), @BenDickeyMusic and new friends @danedehaan (as Billy the Kid), Jake Shur, and @leilageorge. Here's the trailer! Coming to theaters this March.
In honor of #RealityBites 25th anniversary, I’m taking hey, that’s my bike on tour this summer with spin doctors and blues traveler.
Paul Robeson was an actor, musician, writer, lawyer, athlete and activist. Born in 1898, he grew up in Princeton, NJ, near where I graduated high school. I took my first acting classes at the Paul Robeson Center for the Arts. His legacy was my first example of what a person could accomplish through the performing arts...anything. Today for #MLKDay, I'm reminding myself of Robeson and Dr King’s courage, American heroes who used their VOICE to fight for equality here and all over the world.
It’s getting real now. One week until opening night of #TrueWest on Broadway. 🌵 Illustration by @reddy_hotline for @newyorkermag.
The first time I saw @BenDickeyMusic perform live, I was hypnotized. I still am. He is heading out on tour starting this February, and his album A Glimmer On The Outskirts will be released on March 8. Head to BenDickeyMusic.com for album and show details. Catch him if you can.
The original #10YearChallenge. 2004 to 2014. #Boyhood
I read film critic Justin Chang's dream Oscar ballot in the LA Times and it meant a lot (to say the least!) to see @BenDickeyMusic's performance in Blaze recognized. This is Ben with Josh Hamilton and Alia Shawkat on his very first day of acting. Ever! We started the day with a table read and a few Blaze Foley tunes. @blazemovie is out on demand one week from today!
In such great company at the New York Film Critics’ Circle Awards. It was a reunion for me with @AlfonsoCuaron for Great Expectations. Roma is another brilliant feather in his cap. And @iamreginaking is downright dynamite in Beale Street. Thank you to the NYFCC for honoring me for #FirstReformed, alongside such amazing work. But the highlight of everyone’s evening was seeing @martinscorsese_ and Paul together and listening to them share their insight into the beauty of movies.

Happy birthday to the best actor in the world. #DenzelWashington #TrainingDay #MagnificentSeven
Previews Night 1. #TrueWest
Sam was a poet, writer, actor, director and a hero to me. His work has inspired my entire career, and has led to some of my most memorable theater & film experiences. Before we begin #TrueWest on Broadway tonight, here’s a couple more memories: The Late Henry Moss opened at NYC’s Signature Theater in 2001 in the days just after September 11th. I acted with Arliss Howard. It was a staggering and bewildering time. The play helped pull a lot of us through it. Among the most fully realized collaborative experiences I’ve ever had was directing A Lie of the Mind. The acting, music, set design, and costumes wrapped around the masterpiece of a play like fingers form a fist. I still miss it.
Brothers. Previews for #TrueWest begin December 27. Tickets and information at the link in bio. @roundaboutnyc #PaulDano
Over the years, I started reading all of #SamShepard’s work, seeing his plays and even acting with him a couple times. He played my father twice. Once in Snow Falling on Cedars and once in Hamlet. I still remember him grabbing my face and whispering, “Remember Me.” #TrueWest
It is 1995. I’m 25. I had recently filmed #BeforeSunrise and was cast in Steppenwolf’s production of #BuriedChild. Sam Shepard was my favorite writer and he was apparently going to join us in Chicago to continue work on his Pulitzer Prize winning masterpiece. @garysiniseofficial directed. He kicked my ass and taught me so much. I remember after the first read-through I went to the men’s room. I stood at the urinal and found myself next to our esteemed playwright. “Pretty good,” he said. I went home and called Richard Linklater. He said, “Wow man, You’re pissing in the tall grass with the big dogs.” #SamShepard
One of my favorite memories of making @BlazeMovie was when Sybil Rosen took us out to visit Blaze’s grave on the morning of the film’s premiere at SXSW. We told stories and said our thank you’s for allowing us to be part of telling the story. Yesterday would have been Blaze’s 69th birthday. You’re a legend. Keep on Blazin’ on. #BlazeFoley
A few years ago, my wife and I gave a book called Rules For A Knight to our kids for Christmas. We self published it and gave it to our extended family as well. The book was meant to give our children a more interesting take on humility, honesty, sacrifice, grace, courage - all the things adults aspire to live up to too. Later on, Knopf published it officially as this small, linen-backed book with Ryan’s illustrations throughout. I always think about it this time of year and I signed a few copies at @booksaremagicbk. Swing by if you like and support your local bookstore this holiday season. #RulesForAKnight
In 1984, my mom let me stay up late and watch Sam Shepard’s #TrueWest on PBS. Gary Sinise directed and starred opposite John Malkovich. I had just seen The Right Stuff and wanted to see more from #SamShepard. He seemed part punk rock, part Gary Cooper, part Eugene O’Neil. That TV program of @steppenwolfthtr’s New York production was the greatest thing I’d ever seen. It was as if the walls of my house had blown over. How could I sleep? Thirty plus years later, I’m still sleepless. In two weeks, previews begin for the #Broadway revival with Paul Dano and me, directed by James Macdonald.
Rehearsals begin for Sam Shepard’s #TrueWest with Paul Dano and me. On Broadway starting December 27. Link in bio for info. Paul and I first worked together when he played the younger version of me in Taking Lives. Then a couple years later, he tore up the stage with #PeterDinklage, #JoshHamilton and @zoe.kazan when I directed Things We Want. He’s done so much great work and right now, don’t miss him, with my friend @patriciaarquette and Benicio Del Toro in the series #EscapeAtDannemora directed by the great Ben “Reality Bites” Stiller @benstiller. This year, Paul is also nominated for Best First Film at @filmindependent #SpiritAwards for Wildlife. 14 years later, it’s good to be acting alongside him. Finally!
Paul Schrader. What’s on his lapel? That’s his Sunday school perfect attendance badge for 11 years. Paid off. This week, he won best screenplay for @firstreformedmovie from the National Board of Review and at the Gotham Awards. And extra cool to have one of my best friends, Alessandro Nivola, give me a prize - unsurprisingly (if you know him) he brought the house down with his wit. His performance in @disobediencemov is easily among the best of the year.
Jet lagged and couldn’t sleep, so I went to a diner at 6:30 am this morning for breakfast. I walked in and I was on TV. The waitress was more confused than me.
Birthday kiss from Catherine Deneuve! And most importantly, it’s Election Day. I voted absentee and if you still need to make your voice heard, go to GetToThePolls.com. #Vote
