When I met @jess.wandering she was afraid of heights... seems like she got over that! Still not sure if I’d hire her as a guide tho. Swipe for a video of instructor Jess. 👷🏻♀️
#ad I got a taste of Switzerland last year, and it's been calling me back ever since... it’s just as beautiful as I remembered. Catching first light in Alpstein. And testing out the new SH/FT shoes from @columbia1938. Love how versatile they are for around town, to mountain trekking. 👟 #moveoutsidetheexpected
Over here trying to figure out what to write in the caption line, any useful information I can pass along... It’s tough to fake inspiration, and lately, I find myself not wanting to post. Or even touch my phone for that matter. Does anyone else go thru those phases?
Been slowly making our way thru Tuscany with @acquapannausa. Love hearing the story of how they found their natural underground water source in the 1500s. And the efforts they take to protect the source, while being conscious of their environmental impact. #sponsored #instameetmehere #acquapanna
My vision as a photographer has narrowed. It’s easy to walk up to a spot and instantly know where and how I want to shoot it. This is a good and a bad thing... because the images have increasingly got more staged, to please my ultra particular eye. Rarely am I satisfied with just capturing the moment as it happens. What I like about cliff jumping is that even tho it’s a planned shot, there’s still no faking that jump. I had to get a running start on this one to clear trees and rocks on the way down. I was nervous... can you feel it?
Been off the grid the past week with @churchillwildsafaris and @travelmanitoba. I couldn’t get over how goofy these Polar Bears were. Moments later the guy on the left belly flopped off the rock. #churchillwild #sealriverheritagelodge #exploremb #sponsored @matadornetwork #travelstoke
A common backlash I get is that I promote dangerous activities. I try to create impossible looking images. Ones that highlight the resilience of the human spirit, and show off the beauty of our planet. . . . I’ve debated posting this shot. Spent a decent amount of time bringing it to life - finding the location, and angle to make it appear like @jess.wandering is scaling a wall high above the ocean. It’s an exaggerated reality, that evokes a feeling. The more feeling I can pack into an image the more successful it is. Is it enough feeling to lead to action? Motivation to put down the phone, to get out of bed? I can only hope so. But a lot of people would argue that I’m feeding into the reckless mentality that photographers sometimes take to get the perfect shot . . . . We didn’t risk our lives for this one - there’s solid ground 4 feet below. But what happens when a feature page shares it without that disclosure? Will I inspire others to emulate the perceived dangerous behavior? Maybe. Should I let that limit my creative freedom? I go back and forth.
Last light over Lake Tahoe - love the clash of warm to cool color. I used a 10 sec exposure, with a polarizer to get the soft water effect. 🧜🏼♀️: @jess.wandering
We’ve been averaging a cliff jump a day this past week... and I think this morning’s was the most memorable. Its been a blast catching up with my old friend @kchainzzzzz while making the drive north. I’ll be based in PNW for the next while, anybody wanna get out? *note- always check the water depth before jumping. This one was about 10 ft deep.
Yesterday, I introduced the new van to my old tree friends. 🌲🚎🌲
Photography concept: Compression. The first image was shot at 78mm, the second at 32mm. Notice that Half Dome looks closer in the first one? If you step back and shoot your subject (in this case, the subject is @jess.wandering) from farther away, and zoom in, you can create the illusion that the background view is bigger than it actually is. This is known as the compression effect. Here, it makes Half Dome appear to be towering over the campsite, when in reality, it’s pretty far away. . . . If you’re interested in backcountry camping in Yosemite like this, @jess.wandering just posted a blog outlining all the details. Link in her bio.
Spotted a baby llama from across the way... took the next hour to find her and say hi.
Sun’s out, birds chripin, waterfall’s ragin, half dome’s smilin. Anybody else in the Sierras this weekend?
Watching the clouds light up, and the storm roll in from @RenoTahoe. One of the most unique displays of light I’ve seen. . . . Swipe for the raw image. Shot it dark to retain the car trail highlights/color in the sky. 📸 Sony a7r3, 24-240 lens. iso50/63mm/f6.3/30sec. Edited in Lightroom. . . . Swipe again to see our #RenoTahoe office for the evening. We stayed for a good 6 episodes.. shooting last light, sunset, till twilight.
Summer has arrived in @RenoTahoe. 💦🌲 Took the Paddle board out today, and found this small Pine tree lined cove with incredibly clear water. #RenoTahoe #KeepTahoeBlue @jess.wandering
Alpenglow magic on the top deck. Shot at 200mm.
Morning warmth in the wilderness. . All about the simple pleasures out here. @jess.wandering

It’s easy to get inspired nowadays, media has gotten so realistic that, in the moment, it almost feels like enough to watch from the sidelines. For me, it took a real life person to fully inspire me to go for it. When I met @klyn8 she didn’t have an overly enthusiastic view on life, or even talk that much. She listened to the big ideas that would pop into my mind. In this way, she lifted me up, and changed my life. . . . We all struggle, I might go as far as say, we are all struggling. Whether it’s first world problems or real problems, it’s important to address it. The best thing about social media is that you can show the world who you wish you were. I remember before this digital web I thought that I was the only one who felt a deep curiosity of what was down the unfamiliar road. Everyone appeared happy otherwise. But now, with social, it’s clear to see that there are plenty of people who value these same things. They’re looking for human connection in the same way that you are. Reach out, meet up, talk with them, look em in the eyes and listen. You never know what you might spark in someone if you listen.
It’s 4am and I’m on the floor of the Mexico City Airport. Got an overnight layover, and there’s a security guard who kicks me every time I doze off. Man, prolly should’ve spent extra to get the direct. None of the movies I have downloaded would keep me awake. I guess I’ll write something. . . . It’s been 6 years since my marriage ended, and I was gifted a second try at life. 6 years ago, I took my first trip. A lot has changed, but so much hasn’t - I was in this exact situation. Spending the night on the cold airport floor, after visiting Machu Picchu. Back then I was scared to go home. And now, I’m still scared, but it has nothing to do with home. This floor feels about right. I am home. With my buddy in the yellow vest, who keeps checking that I’m awake. . . . It’s funny how you convince yourself that you’ve chosen your life. I remember I felt that way when I was an unmotivated accountant. As much as it seems like I’ve created my current reality, it feels a lot more like luck. I couldn’t ask for anything more than what I have now, so why do I still feel so sad? I’m prolly just tired. Hey it’s 6 now, maybe the restaurants are open in the food court. Guess I’ll head that way. . . . Swipe for a sleepless bathroom selfie. There is a face behind every image on here, and a lot of the time it looks like this.
Prior to this trip, I only knew the mountains of @Peru... I have a new found appreciation of this country’s diversity. Between the Amazon rainforest, glacier peaks in the Andes, expansive sand dunes, and rich cultural traditions, it’s the ultimate destination. Here’s the desert oasis of Huacachina under a full moon. Shot at 16mm/30sec/f4/iso200. #visitperu #peruredefiningrichness
First trip in the new van was to see the stars with my Mom. My stoke for all this stuff comes from her. Happy Mother’s Day!
Has to be one of the most interesting farms out there. 🌀 Happy to be working with @peru for the next few days. #visitperu #peruredefiningrichness
Been in a creative rut lately... how do you guys deal with feeling uninspired ?
Feet ankle deep in the sand, looking out to the waves. Turn around to realize that jagged mountains are towering over from behind. . . Hawaiian beauty, shot at 240mm.
This is exactly what I expected the beach in Australia to look like. 🦘 @jess.wandering 🦘
Couldn’t help but compare this beach to the one in Leonardo DiCaprio’s dream world in Inception... rocks the size of skyscrapers, eroding away and eventually collapsing. You can see the remnants of a pillar bottom left corner. I asked the heli pilot why there’s no way down to the beach, and apparently there’s a colony of penguins that live down there. Dream penguin world down there for sure. 🐧 @savethereef #savethereef
@jess.wandering doing the Laird Hamilton pose. 🏄♀️ I’d give her a strong 7/10.👏
Yesterday, we had the opportunity to swim with some endangered Australian Sea Lions. Every time they looked at me with their curious faces, it felt like I was looking into the eyes of a friend. Happy to be working with @savethereef to help protect more habitat for my new ocean buddies.
Dusk in the Italian Alps.
It was us and two locals at this cenote. They brought speakers and put them all around the cave and blasted music that bounced off the walls. Lots of times it’s annoying when people play music in nature, but this cave had the best acoustics I’ve heard. Swipe for a video... the song that kicks in is the natural audio from my camera. Not sure what song it is, but it def felt like a movie.
Still trying to process the magnitude of the flower bloom that @jess.wandering and I walked thru today. I’ll never forget seeing the neon orange hills from miles away on the drive in. We looked at each other and wondered what it was. It seemed like a fiery red alpenglow that we’d only seen in the alpine... but soon realized it was all flowers. A sea of orange rolling hills. . . . For those of you wondering: the orange flower here is the Golden Poppy which is also the official state flower of California. This intense of bloom doesn’t happen very often, only when it rains a lot. If you’re planning on going, know that it’s extremely crowded, and factor in more travel time, cause parking is insane. Please be respectful and don’t trample the flowers that everyone who has traveled lengths to see. Stay on the beaten paths - which these photos were all taken from. ✌️🌼✌️
Out of my trips, the Philippines stands out. It’s up there with the American South, and when I road tripped Central America. Good memories with @jess.wandering 🍃
There are over 6000 cenotes (sinkholes like this) in the Yucatán Peninsula. Most of which are not tourist attractions, and some of which are still uncovered. Walking around the forest here, iguanas pop out of the bushes, and the locals will tell you stories of Jaguars. Oh and there might be something like this below your feet, waiting to be discovered. . . 🧗🏻♀️: @jess.wandering
When I go trekking alone, the animals speak to me. This goat talked me thru my stresses at the time. So I guess that’s the benefit of solo time, you look to your surroundings, and appreciate them more.
Of the places I’ve been, I’d say Zhangjiajie left the greatest impression on me. It was the most crowded streets I’ve seen - on Disneyland’s level, but larger scale. I was a foot taller than the crowd. And the only one with light hair. People were pointing, taking pictures, grabbing my arm and pulling in their direction and throwing out their selfie sticks to pose in front of me... felt like a movie star there for a second. 🥴
@Jess.wandering gets ready for the beach by putting on her island hat. 😎 🏖 . . been trying to figure out how to properly execute this shot for years. Did this one at high aperture to keep foreground and background in focus. Inspired by the perspective work of @asenseofhuber and @moderntarzan 🙏 two of the most creative dudes on here.
6 years ago, I was stuck in a daydream at my desk. It might’ve been that I’d just seen “Walter Mitty” or it might’ve been fate calling from deep down.. but I jumped on Facebook to see that my brother posted one of those freak plane deals 👉$200 round trip flights to Peru👈 and I clicked. . . I’ve told this story a million times, so you all know where it’s going. All these years later, I’m still here. Sometimes it feels like I never came back from that trip. Never came back to reality. Am I running away? Or stepping into what I’m meant to be? You guys are the wrong people to ask cause I’m sure it’d be a unanimous Keep Going 🙌 ! 🤘! . . . About a month ago, I jumped into a cut out hole in a frozen river. I look back at this photo with intense nostalgia. It might be my fav photo of me ever. If only I could go back to depressed me 6 years ago and show him this picture. Slowly lean over and whisper in my ear how much I got paid for the job (equivalent of 6 mo at that office) . . . . It’s been nearly 4 years of full time jumping into scary places. Nonstop camera slinging, stomach dropping, catching my breath fun. Emphasis on the word: Nonstop. To thrvive into 2020, I need balance. (writing this from the bathtub after a day of construction 💆🏼♂️ 🛁 ) . . . Check out @quinsvan for more construction. 🔨 . . . Photo by: @jess.wandering
There’s another world down here.
One of the dreamiest swims out there, and the rest of the world thinks so too. Swipe to see the reality of how crowded this place gets. And they say this is the slow season. So to get a shot we wait for a moment between tour busses and still have to edit out a few people. Check the third slide for my Lightroom edit. It took about 15 min to get what I wanted on this one. . . Just cause I know I’m gonna get this question - I don’t sell presets. I don’t use them because I subscribe to the idea that every photo needs something different. Editing is by far my least fav aspect of the job. In my last 100 posts, I’ve had to take out people like this 2 times, so this was one of the tougher and more intricate alterations I’ve done. My average edit time is about a minute. 🏊🏻♀️ @jess.wandering
Driving in the Yucatan, there’s CENOTE signs everywhere... today that sign led us to someone’s backyard with a hole in the ground that opened up to this 👐
It’s been a while since I’ve felt these butterflies behind the wheel. There’s nothing I have to do, but everything I want to do. We got 24 hrs till the first stop. I’ll take this shift, you can get some sleep.
1pm in the Arctic.
Best way to take advantage of the sub-zero temps - throw boiling water up and watch it freeze. 🙌 @jess.wandering
It’s all about the subtle details up here in the Arctic Circle. There’s only a few hours of sun so it makes you appreciate it. The silence is deafening. The snow seems whiter, the light softer and there’s reindeer running around everywhere. . . Thanks @nokiantyresna for organizing such a well rounded trip full of culture and adventure. #itsabeautifuljourney #nokiantyres #sponsored
Finnish legend has it that a giant troll placed this rock here. More recently, scientists said glaciers left it behind as they receded north over 8000 years ago. Which theory are you going with? #ItsaBeautifulJourney with @nokiantyresna #nokiantyres #sponsored
Stormy sunset 🌅 love Hawaii’s dramatic weather... the forecast has been consistently wrong so far. A few min prior to this we assumed the gloomy conditions would over power the sunset. Playing in the waves w/ @jess.wandering - 1/3 sec exposure.
One tree to rule them all 🌬
