For 25 years I’ve witnessed change in China. One thing has remained the same - The Old Hundred Names - the common folk. I wasn’t there 30 years ago when the Chinese military crushed student protests in Tiananmen Square. But with my deep connection to China, I can’t not think of the people that risked everything then. Today, with these portraits, I wish to honor China’s commoners, the Old Hundred Names 老百姓. On China’s National Day 2007 I pulled them one by one from the throngs of tourists at the Forbidden City and from around the square and made a few frames against the red walls. I approached over 80 people that day. None declined my request. I’m truly grateful for the many people in China that have allowed me to step into their lives for a moment to photograph them. Often, they put themselves at risk doing so. Thank you! I’m thinking of you today, the conversations we had. I hope you are well. Charles Zhang 张朝阳, one of China’s most successful entrepreneurs, poses playfully on top of the managers desk at a state owned chemical factory outside Beijing in July 2000. Zhang graduated from MIT, returned to China and founded Sohu 搜狐. Today he is one of China’s wealthiest. When Yahoo magazine asked me to photograph China’s tech pioneers I had the idea to do that in a way that would contrast them with China’s old economy. It was a fun hour with Charles in this office full of objects that typified a Chinese SOE. Water thermos, tea leaves steeping in a Nescafé jar. A commemorative Zhou Enlai plate. An enameled cup with spoon. Cigarette ashtray filled with butts. And there is actually a goldfish swimming in the white plastic bowl there. Zhang was digging it with flip phone in one hand and fly swatter in the other. I always enjoy looking at the details in this photo. He’s standing right on the edge of the desk. Can you guess the one item Dong Yongjian built his business in Sichuan, China around? It’s imported from the U.S.A. (Swipe for the answer) Americans eat a lot of chicken but don't eat the feet. And American grown chicken are "grade-A" large. So Yongjian began buying up chicken feet in America and importing those to his factory in Sichuan. There, he spiced them up Sichuan style. You know, HOT! At the time of my Wal-Mart story with @bluedragon83 Yongjian's grade-A spicy chicken feet were a big seller at Wal-mart stores in China and one of the only things we found there imported from America. TOPS grocery store opening day, January 1997 - 10,000 Shanghainese stripped clean the shelves of the store. TOPS was the first foreign grocer to try and compete with the fresh street markets that were typical in Shanghai then. TOPS lost that competition and bailed out in 1999. Jousting performers and school kids at the American Dream theme park. The park opened in Jiading on the outskirts of Shanghai, China in 1996. It was one of the first parks of its kind, long before the way into China was clear for Disneyland. The American Dream didn’t last long. There may have been other reasons but for one, at that time, Chinese didn’t have the disposable income to spend on the ticket and private automobile ownership had yet to happen. Rescued from an illegal farm in China that harvests bile from bear gall bladders, an Asiatic black bear, also known as a moon bear, undergoes an ultrasound check-up and nail trimming at Animals Asia in Chengdu, China. The bears sustain life threatening injuries and infection while confined to cages for years while the bile is drained from their gall bladders. The bile is prized for its ursodeoxycholic acid, which is sought after for use in traditional Chinese medicine. Animals Asia rescues the bears from these farms, then rehabilitates them at the sanctuaries it operates in China and Vietnam. The bears live out their lives at the sanctuaries and are buried in the cemetary there. (Second image) Animals ASIA was founded by the heroic effort of Jill Robinson in 1998. A synthetic version of ursodeoxycholic acid is available and is being used in Chinese medicine and in tests at the Visible Heart Lab in Minnesota. Beneath the uniform and armor James Harrison wore playing outside linebacker in the NFL, were bruises from cupping treatment. Cupping is an ancient therapy practiced for centuries in China. At 39, Harrison was the oldest defensive player in professional football. I visited him during his spring training in Scottsdale, Arizona to document his workouts and health routine (no alcohol, refined sugar, or processed carbs). Before retirement, Harrison was spending about $350,000 a year employing a team of specialists, including massage therapists, acupuncturists, and chiropractors, who helped manage the pain and impact his intense workouts and the game had on his body. When it was mentioned to Harrison that scientists are skeptical about cupping and some of the other treatments he uses, he shrugged and said, “All I know is before I get treated, I HURT, and after, I feel better.”— This image is an out from my Chinese medicine story, in the January NatGeo magazine. #NFL #Defense #JamesHarrison #92 #FritzHoffmann #football #Chinesemedicine #cupping #natgeo #nationalgeographic

In the early 1990s neighborhoods in Lujiazui, the new area in Shanghai’s Pudong, became occupied by workers that were tearing them down and raising up the skyscraping towers that now draw the skyline. Is there anything to photograph there?” The location of this photo is between the three super structures that now stand at the center of the Lujiazui design - The Jinmao, World Financial Center and the Shanghai Tower.
