Step into the world of Sophie Calle! Fotomuseum Winterthur and Kunstmuseum Thun collaborate on an exciting dual part comprehensive exhibition of works by the French artist. The exhibition at Fotomuseum Winterthur, ‘Un certain regard,’ deals with the representation of absence, specifically images that have been removed from sight. Included in the exhibition is Calle's 2013 series ‘Que voyez-vous?’ which is an extension of a project begun at the Isabella Gardner Museum in Boston. In 1990, thirteen artworks were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and since then the museum has displayed empty picture frames in their place. In Calle’s series, she portrays museum visitors at the Isabella Gardner Museum standing in front of five of these “placeholders.” She asks, “What do you see?” with answers hanging beneath the portraits. Sophie Calle urges us to conemplate our own answers to this question, and the immense power of absence. Part-two of the exhibition, titled ‘Regard Incertain,’ begins on September 6 at Kunstmuseum Thun. — Sophie Calle - 'Un certain regard' 📍 Fotomuseum Winterthur 📆 Until August 25, 2019 - Sophie Calle - 'Regard Incertain' 📍Kunstmuseum Thun 📆September 6 - December 1, 2019 — #SophieCalle @foto_museum @kunstmuseumthun #FotoMuseum #FotoMuseumWinterthur #KunstMuseumThun #Winterthur #Perrotin — Sophie Calle, 'What do you see ? Iván Argote's solo exhibition titled 'Juntos Together' debuts today at the ASU Art Museum! Argote's first solo museum in the US presents a curated survey of the artist's most significant film and video works, spanning over a decade. Alongside a site-specific, sculptural installation that considers the current cultural climate of Arizona. Argote’s sculptures blend references to pre-Colombian art and brutalist architecture, and often contain texts that embody what the artist calls “Ternura Radical (Radical Tenderness)” — a strategy which uses affection, emotions and humor as subversive tools to engage public audiences on political and personal levels. — Iván Argote - ‘Juntos Together’ 📍 ASU Art Museum, Tempe, Arizona, USA 📆 Through January 4, 2020 — @ivan_argote @asuartmuseum #IvanArgote #AsuArtMuseum #JuntosTogether #Tempe #Perrotin — Iván Argote, 'Bridges: We’re all others', 2019. Elmgreen & Dragset ironically reframe our worldview through their inoperable telescope, on view at Sculpture Milwaukee. 🔭 Elmgreen and Dragset’s large-scale bronze telescope, titled ‘A Greater Perspective,’ critiques how culture shapes and frames our environment. The phrase “powerless structures”—used by the duo to describe their works in the past— is fitting for this work, which is rendered useless due to its height and solid bronze material. The artists transform this the old-fashioned, romantic tool of discovery into a lingering monument, bereft of its purpose. The piece argues that the perspective used to shape our history was too narow-minded to accomodate our world today, urging us to broaden our own mindset. Originally commissioned for the High Line in New York, the sculpture is currently situated on the edge of Wisconsin avenue in Milwaukee, overlooking Lake Wisconsin. — Elmgreen & Dragset - 'A Greater Perspective' 📍 Sculpture Milwauke, 929 E. Happy birthday Klara Kristalova! 🎂 “Glazed ceramic was a despised material in my education" says Swedish artist Klara Kristalova, adding that "for me that was good, because I was not into making important art. I wanted to do something different, and more playful, more close to myself.” Today we celebrate the birthday of Klara Kristalova and her mischievous and whimsical sculptures. Often drawing from Nordic storytelling and traditional myths, Kristalova's figures raditate a singular raw and vulnerable power, all the while channeling the skeptical eye of the curious child. In her new exhibition at MAXXI Museum in Rome, Paolo Pivi gets a little wild 🐻 Influenced by her home of Anchorage, Alaska, Pivi's piece 'Did you know I am single?' is reminiscent of a typical hunting trophy — the bearskin. Discover Izumi Kato's new sculptures, paintings and drawings at Perrotin Shanghai through August 17! ✨ “Discovering the self within fūdo” is the quintessential attitude of Kato’s practice, which gives expression to the signals arising from the interaction between the artist’s surroundings and his own corporeal body. Claire Tabouret imagines a fictitious journey to Nantes, France for her exhibition ‘If Only The Sea Could Sleep,' on view at HAB Galerie. ⛵️ Imagining she had to cross the seven seas to reach Nantes, Claire Tabouret went to the port of San Pedro along the Californian coast to find the cloth used for sails, which became the medium for her painting. Out of these large, frameless canvases, silhouettes take on three dimensional form and become painted plaster sculptures. Inspired by 'If Only the Sea Could Sleep: Love Poems,' a collection of Syrian poems by the poet Adonis, Claire Tabouret uses the constant movement of the sea as a metaphor to translate the emotional ebb and flow of a romantic encounter. - Claire Tabouret imagine un voyage fictif à Nantes pour son exposition ‘If Only The Sea Could Sleep’ à la HAB Galerie. 🎶 Explore the music behind Xavier Veilhan's solo show ‘Channel Orange,’ on view now at Perrotin Shanghai! The title 'Channel Orange' is an homage to musician Frank Ocean. It is the name of his first album and refers to synesthesia — specifically the shade of orange that was conjured when Ocean first fell in love. We are looking forward to opening Gabriel Rico’s exhibition ‘The Stone, The Branch And The Golden Geometry’ at Perrotin Seoul! 🌱 Looking back to a time when man was believed to be the master of nature, Rico investigates historical technologies seen during the peak of the Age of Reason. He distills geometric shapes that correspond to this period when the applied life sciences began to rely on mathematics to quantize nature in order to understand, dominate, and ultimately attempt to conquer it. — #GabrielRico #가브리엘리코 #Perrotin #페로탕 #PerrotinSeoul #geometry #contemporaryart #exhibition — Artwork: Gabriel Rico, "II" - from the series "Let not the judge meet the cause halfway", 2019. What a beautiful day to open ‘Summertime’, an exhibition of Josh Sperling at Perrotin Tokyo! ☀️ Sperling, whose work is noted for his expressive sculptural paintings (playful forms meticulously wrapped in energetically colored canvases), has divided the exhibition into two constituent parts. These separate spaces each feature distinct visual approaches and compositions relevant to Sperling’s practice, merging his interest in canonical art historical movements to more popular post modernist expressions of form. — Josh Sperling, ‘Summertime’ Perrotin Tokyo July 3 – August 10, 2019 — @joshsperling #JoshSperling #Summertime #Perrotin #PerrotinTokyo #minimalist #exhibition #installation — Exhibition views of Josh Sperling’s ‘Summertime’ at Perrotin Tokyo. Takashi Murakami is mostly known for his flower icons and sweet designs, but his universe is in fact multifaceted, and his solo exhibition MURAKAMI vs MURAKAMI at Tai Kwun Hong Kong tends to reflect this complexity. The main hall embodies Takashi Murakami’s mélange of high and low, elite art and pop culture. Under the cute surfaces, however, lurk darker visions of trauma and pain. This in part reflects the artist’s anxiety about nuclear power, but also echoes the broader postwar trauma in Japan that resulted from the detonation of two atomic bombs and the subsequent flood of American culture. — MURAKAMI vs MURAKAMI Tai Kwun Contemporary, Hong Kong Until September 1, 2019 - 村上隆 對戰 村上隆 香港大館當代美術館 至2019年9月1日 — @takashipom @taikwun.hk @taikwuncontemporary #TakashiMurakami #Murakami #TaiKwun #exhibition #TaiKwunContemporary #contemporaryart #kaikaikiki — Installation views of "MURAKAMI vs MURAKAMI", Tai Kwun Contemporary ©Takashi Murakami/Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd. Meet Izumi Kato’s fascinating and enigmatic creatures at Perrotin Shanghai! 👁 Their anonymous silhouettes and strange faces with absent features are above all simple forms and strong colours. Their elementary representation, an oval head with two big, fathomlessly deep eyes shows no more than a crudely figured nose and mouth. Bringing to mind primitive arts, their expressions evoke totems and the animist belief that a spiritual force runs through living and mineral worlds alike. The aura that they exude seems to manifest the first movement of life while the intensity of their expression gives us access to a knowledge of man founded less on reason than on intuition. Embodying a primal, universal form of humanity, these magical beings invite viewers to identify themselves as if looking in a mirror. — @izukat692 #IzumiKato #PerrotinShanghai #Perrotin #painting #closeup #fudo #primitivearts #creature #totem — 🎨 Artwork: Izumi Kato, ‘Untitled', 2019. Introducing Jenna Gribbon, exhibited in ‘Them’ group show at Perrotin New York! Jenna Gribbon’s paintings meditate on viewership and voyeurism, painting private moments shared by women – often her friends or partner. Using a bright and inviting palette, the artist allows viewers to delicately enter her paintings, only to be challenged by the positioning, depth of field, or candidness of the subject. In 'Watching me paint', Gribbon invites the viewer to witness a private moment between the artist and subject–who confronts the viewer with a direct gaze and an exposed chest. The figure’s directness towards the viewer in this intimate moment aims to examine the dynamics of viewership and the subsequent voyeurism. — ‘Them’ group show at Perrotin New York Until August 16 — @jennagribbon #ThemGroupShow #JennaGribbon #figurativepainting #exhibition #Perrotin #PerrotinNewYork #pride #lgbtq #queerart #queer #romance #love — 🎨 Artwork: Jenna Gribbon, 'Watching me paint', 2019. We are very excited to announce Jean-Michel Othoniel’s first retrospective exhibition in Argentina! ’Nudos Salvajes’ opens on June 29 at CCK in Buenos Aires. 🇦🇷 - The exhibition was born from the meeting between the French artist and the Mexican mathematician, Aubin Arroyo. Bharti Kher is exhibited among 25 international artists such as Pablo Picasso, Giuseppe Penone, Niki de Saint-Phalle or Henri Matisse at the Domaine des Etangs in Massignac! The exhibition “La Lumière des Mondes” (The Light of the Worlds) reveals another aspect of the Dragonfly Collection by exploring Nature, the universal mother, complementary forces, such as the feminine and the masculine, the Earth and the sky, the vertical and the horizontal, and the transformation required for each of us to renew with our unity, and hence renewing our commitment to the Earth. Let’s celebrate music with Xavier Veilhan’s exhibition ‘Channel Orange’ at Perrotin Shanghai! 🧡 Channel Orange is a title in homage to Frank Ocean. It is the name of his first album and refers to the phenomenon of synesthesia and the color he once perceived during a summer when he fell in love for the first time. The ´Large Instruments’ were built within the scope of the 57th Venice Art Biennale, for his installation Studio Venezia in the French Pavilion. The initial idea of these pieces was to create a link between visitors and the wooden architecture of the venue by reproducing familiar objects, yet distinctly out of scale. Against all odds, the instruments were used very often by the musicians invited and exceeded their added function, to instead become fully-fledged instruments. They gradually acquired a multiple duality, becoming simultaneously familiar and architectural objects, both inspired by the 1970s - by size and shape - and the 1920s - through their constructivist aspect. — #XavierVeilhan #ChannelOrange #FrankOcean #FêteDeLaMusique #LaBiennaleDiVenezia #LargeInstruments #guitar #Perrotin #PerrotinShanghai — 🎨Artwork : Xavier VEILHAN, ‘Big Instrument’, 2019. We wish Bharti Kher a very happy birthday! 🎂 Bharti Kher’s oeuvre, which spans more than two decades and includes paintings, sculptures and ready-made objects, installations, displays an unwavering relationship with surrealism, narrative and the nature of things - inspired by a wide range of sources from Oppenheim to Bourgeois, Bacon and Blake, Kher’s work moves through time using reference as a counterpoint and contradiction as a visual tool. Her chimeras, mythical monsters and allegorical tales combine references that are topical and traditional, political and post-colonial at the same time. — @bkherful #BhartiKher #happybirthday #painting #bindis — 🎨 Artwork: Bharti Kher, ‘A hybrid algorithm to fill a lacuna’, 2018. One week left to visit Jean-Michel Othoniel’s exhibition ‘Oracles’ at Perrotin Paris! 🔥 - ‘And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. And they said, Go to, let us build a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven.’ From Genesis to the histories of Herodotus, between history and myth, the Tower of Babel and its destruction have fired the imagination. What remains of this ziggurat, this architectural utopia and symbolic link between heaven and earth? What happened to the millions of bricks used to erect it? What new utopias were built on the ruins of that thwarted aspiration? These are the questions that underlie Jean-Michel Othoniel’s latest works, presented for the first time at Perrotin Paris. - 💥@Othoniel_studio #JeanMichelOthoniel #Oracles #Sculpture #Perrotin #PerrotinParis - exhibition views, all artworks courtesy the artist and Perrotin
Only few days left to visit Paola Pivi exhibition ‘We are the baby gang’ at Perrotin New York, on view through June 8! . Paola Pivi’s oeuvre is diverse, surprising, and ever evolving—often appearing to be the work of multiple creative minds. With ambitious and spectacular acts, as well as simple gestures, Pivi playfully appropriates cultural symbols, resulting in unexpected visuals that also appear familiar. In each work, subject and materiality are manipulated leading to surprising transformations. Pivi makes a space for where the impossible becomes possible and fiction enters the realm of the real. - @paolapivi #Exhibition #PerrotinNewYork #Perrotin #lastdays _ © Courtesy of the artist & Perrotin Photo : Attilio Maranzano
