Today let’s have a look at Xavier Veilhan’s installation on the roof of the MAAT museum in Lisbon "Romy and the Dogs", 2019. French artist Xavier Veilhan is the first to use MAAT’s rooftop, with a specially-designed sculpture installation, “Romy and the dogs”, that responds to the characteristics of this unique urban space. Presenting new cast aluminium statues which form part of an ongoing series, Veilhan proposes a figure of a woman and a pack of dogs as the new inhabitants of MAAT’s fifth façade. Playing with notions of scale, recognition and strangeness, the figures also evoke how digitally-produced artefacts have gradually been replacing traditional art objects. The exhibition will be accesible through the new pedestrian bridge designed by Amanda Levete. With a new viewpoint on the riverfront, London-based architects AL_A have turned MAAT’s rooftop into one of Lisbon’s tourist experiences. Jesper Just’s latest exhibition « Servitudes – Circuits (Interpassivities) » just opened @maatmuseum ! - 💥 Using the exhibition architecture as a medium that enters into a dialogue with film projections, Jesper Just transforms the Oval Gallery of the museum into a couple of emotional spaces inhabited by fleeting characters that reflect the human condition in the present era, in a site-specific intervention. Claude Rutault exhibition ‘de-finitions/methods from the 70s’ is currently on view at Perrotin New York until June 8! . Rutault’s practice is the writing and issuing of texts indicating protocols and procedures called “de-finitions/methods,” according to which a gallery, collector, or institution—known as the “charge-taker”— agrees to “actualize” a given work. The exhibition "KAWS: ALONE AGAIN" just opened at MOCAD Detroit! 💥 Organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit’s Executive Director Elysia Borowy-Reeder in close collaboration with the artist, this solo exhibition features five sculptures, a site specific wall work, and three paintings, within the main exhibition space of the museum. Happy birthday to Paola Pivi! We are glad to present currently her solo show « We are the baby gang » at Perrotin New York (on view until June 8). Check our stories to see more! - Paola Pivi's diverse work, spanning performances to sculptures to large installations, is punctuated over the years by her photographic representations of animals in performative happenings; these are her most renowned images. A long way from unicorns and other chimeras, the animals that appear in Paola Pivi’s world are very real. Yet, set in their strange surroundings, they appear as a dream within reality, imbuing them with a mythological aura (ostriches or a donkey sailing on a small boat in the Mediterranean Sea, 84 goldfish swimming in bowls and flying in a passenger airplane in New Zealand, different white animals grazing in an Edenic land, alligators frolicking in whipped cream in Florida or polar bears covered in multicolored feathers posing during the inauguration of Galerie Perrotin in New York). These images cast a new oneiric light over the world, viewed now through the prism of fantasy, of a fabulous bestiary. On view til August 11! ✨ - The architectural context of the exhibition space determines Pieter Vermeersch’s selection of works and scenography for each new project. When he decided to venture beyond the borders of canvas, he soon ran up against a new border, namely that of architecture. This architectural context became like canvas to him, and is the surface on which he paints his murals. These murals consist of gradual transitions of colour. Nothing betrays the labour intensive and rational process required to create them. Brick or cellular concrete walls form the backbone of the exhibition. #Throwback - On April 2nd, 2019, the renowned Fondation Bettencourt Schueller organized its annual concert at the Opéra Comique in Paris, for which this year Xavier Veilhan was given carte blanche for the entire visual design. He decided to call the evening ‘Obliques’. 🎼 - ‘Obliques’ was born from the meeting between Xavier Veilhan and choir conductor Mathieu Romano. In their search for a new scenic approach to choral music, they staged the voices of the Ensemble Aedes, Les Métaboles and La Maîtrise Populaire de l’Opéra Comique, in a « disrupted » scenic design of black and white lines and poetic lighting. The 112 singers presented a repertoire as much eclectic as it was challenging, in the image of the ongoing and diverse efforts of the Fondation Bettencourt Schueller who has been a patron to choral music for nearly 30 years. The unique event honored choir music in all its richness and diversity, the title ‘Obliques’ referring directly to the genre’s transversality and to Veilhan’s desire to privilege cross-over and intersection of the voices. According to the artist, "the original intention of ‘Obliques’ was to put the scenic and costume design at full service of the voices, thanks to the idea of camouflage. By concealing the singers, we become solely focused on their voices, naked, without any amplification nor effect. Their power comes from their multiplication, from which emanates a certain autonomy or even timelessness. A bouquet of flowers, crafted in denim and decorated with metal wire and nails, juxtaposes the delicateness of its floral subject with the rough-cowboy-Americana evocations of its materials. The artist demonstrates how the two can all too often be ill-at-ease with each other. The peep holes he has inconspicuously included throughout also seems a timely comment on South Korea’s recent legislative measures to crack down on the surge in peeping tom devices installed in female restricted spaces.

D-day! We are proud to unveil today the exhibition ‘No patience for monuments’ at Perotin Seoul. - In Ursula K. Le Guin’s 1986 essay ‘The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction’, she argues against a masculinist monumentalizing impulse of history, and offers up a different proposition for the way culture can exist and can be formed. This ‘carrier bag theory’ challenges that the first tool was in fact a vessel for gathering, and not an instrument of conquest, and that a male-centric society has conditioned us to negate the former in favor of a broader ‘heroic’ narrative. ‘No Patience for Monuments’, brings together the work of a dozen artists whose work and practices embrace multiple facets of Le Guin’s subversive push against the overarching historical narrative.
