Today let’s have a look at Xavier Veilhan’s installation on the roof of the MAAT museum in Lisbon "Romy and the Dogs", 2019. French artist Xavier Veilhan is the first to use MAAT’s rooftop, with a specially-designed sculpture installation, “Romy and the dogs”, that responds to the characteristics of this unique urban space. Presenting new cast aluminium statues which form part of an ongoing series, Veilhan proposes a figure of a woman and a pack of dogs as the new inhabitants of MAAT’s fifth façade. Playing with notions of scale, recognition and strangeness, the figures also evoke how digitally-produced artefacts have gradually been replacing traditional art objects. The exhibition will be accesible through the new pedestrian bridge designed by Amanda Levete. With a new viewpoint on the riverfront, London-based architects AL_A have turned MAAT’s rooftop into one of Lisbon’s tourist experiences. Jesper Just’s latest exhibition « Servitudes – Circuits (Interpassivities) » just opened @maatmuseum ! - 💥 Using the exhibition architecture as a medium that enters into a dialogue with film projections, Jesper Just transforms the Oval Gallery of the museum into a couple of emotional spaces inhabited by fleeting characters that reflect the human condition in the present era, in a site-specific intervention. Through sound, built structures and deconstructed moving images, the artist alters the physicality and perception of exhibition spaces, obstructing the normal flow of museum visitors. This performative approach makes the visitor adjust to unexpected conditions, testing ideas of agency, self-conscience and physical boundaries. - Jesper Just, « Circuits (Interpassivities) », 2018, fractured led wall Curators: Pedro Gadanho, Irene Campolmi @jesperjust #maat #exhibition #video #jesperjust - 📷 © Bruno Lopes / Courtesy: EDP Foundation
This gouache by Julie Curtiss, shows hair — a feature sexualized and often fetishized in women — that overtakes and becomes the body itself. In "Cleave (Vishnu)", ropes of hair coil and entwine to form a constricting corset. Menacingly manicured fingernails frame the subject’s bust and belly—a ‘carrier bag’ in its own manner. - Julie Curtiss takes part to the groupshow ‘No patience for monuments’ currently on view at Perrotin Seoul until June 8! Claude Rutault exhibition ‘de-finitions/methods from the 70s’ is currently on view at Perrotin New York until June 8! . Rutault’s practice is the writing and issuing of texts indicating protocols and procedures called “de-finitions/methods,” according to which a gallery, collector, or institution—known as the “charge-taker”— agrees to “actualize” a given work. Rutault explains the practice: “the hyphen after ‘de-’ eliminates or at least lessens the ‘finition,’ i.e., the definitive, frozen authoritarian nature of the word, which doesn’t suit my work.” Rutault’s paintings are no longer unalterable objects, but rather works in progress. _ #clauderutault #definitionmethod #perrotinnewyork #exhibition #onview _ Photo: Guillaume Ziccarelli. Riffing on specific genres of pop art, figuration, deconstruction, collage, and fashion, the exhibition represents an underlying irreverence and affection for our turbulent times, as well as KAWS’ agility as an artist to appropriate and transform. ⚡️ KAWS: ALONE AGAIN is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD). ‘No Patience for Monuments’ exhibition is still on view at Perrotin Seoul until June 8! - In this groupshow, you could see Sarah Peters’ bronze heads. It appears as though they could be ancient artifacts as well as objects from the future. Quoting antiquity with a subversive edge, Peters’ sculptures correct the metaphoric beheading of the female form throughout art history. By exploring the site of a woman’s voice and agency—her head—and excluding her body altogether, she performs, in a sense, a restitution of female identity. Happy birthday to Paola Pivi! We are glad to present currently her solo show « We are the baby gang » at Perrotin New York (on view until June 8). Check our stories to see more! - Paola Pivi's diverse work, spanning performances to sculptures to large installations, is punctuated over the years by her photographic representations of animals in performative happenings; these are her most renowned images. A long way from unicorns and other chimeras, the animals that appear in Paola Pivi’s world are very real. Yet, set in their strange surroundings, they appear as a dream within reality, imbuing them with a mythological aura (ostriches or a donkey sailing on a small boat in the Mediterranean Sea, 84 goldfish swimming in bowls and flying in a passenger airplane in New Zealand, different white animals grazing in an Edenic land, alligators frolicking in whipped cream in Florida or polar bears covered in multicolored feathers posing during the inauguration of Galerie Perrotin in New York). These images cast a new oneiric light over the world, viewed now through the prism of fantasy, of a fabulous bestiary. They appear to reveal a dimension that is a part of everyday life, which has only by chance never occurred before in front of someone’s eyes. @paolapivi #paolapivi #happybirthday #perrotin

#SaveTheDate - Perrotin is delighted to announce its first collaboration with the Taiwanese-American artist, Lee Mingwei. His first solo show at the gallery ‘The Tourist’ will start on May 15 at Perrotin Tokyo! - Lee Mingwei is an artist whose practice dwells in the intimacy of human exchange. Sculpting scenarios through agreed protocols, the artist honours coalescence between foreignness and intimacy. His practice conjures a space of conviviality and reciprocity, it heightens the interactions that take place between people, often within a scaffolding of daily life such as having a conversation while mending (The Mending Project), dreaming in a shared space (The Sleeping Project), or singing a song for someone (Sonic Blossom). _ #LeeMingwei #Perrotin #PerrotinTokyo #ペロタン東京 #Opening _ Artwork: Lee Mingwei, The Tourist, 2003, The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Have you made it to see ‘No Patience for Monuments’ groupshow at Perrotin Seoul? 👀 - Through this exhibition, take the chance to discover Seoul-born GaHee Park’s paintings. Rendered in a “naive” style that recalls artists like Henri Rousseau, Park’s subject matter is far from it. Depicting romantic scenes where the idyll has turned sour, the sexual acts that seem to be transpiring in her paintings are at odds with their quaint settings. The viewer finds himself an uncomfortable voyeur of Park’s ambiguous and troubling scenes. Parallel to Art Brussels art fair on view til April 28, take the chance to visit Wim Delvoye exhibition in Brussels, at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium! Exhibition on view til July 21! ✨ - Wim Delvoye is an attentive observer of his era, exploring the future to uncover upcoming trends, all the while keeping his view solidly anchored in the past and its traditions. Indeed, his art is often a combination of craftsmanship and the most sophisticated industrial manufacturing techniques. In a new way, the exhibition brings together masterpieces from the RMFAB's collection of ancient art with the artist's creations, that were directly inspired by this setting. Another exclusive feature: Wim Delvoye presents his most recent works for the first time to the public. These art works testify to the artist's attentive view of the changes taking place in our hyper-connected societies, where lines between reality and virtual worlds are increasingly blurry. - Artwork: Wim Delvoye, ‘Dual Möbius Quad Corpus’, 2010, bronze poli, H 167 x 93 x 124 cm © Courtesy Wim Delvoye / photo: Studio Delvoye - @wimdelvoye @fineartsbelgium #WimDelvoye #ContemporaryArt #Exhibition

We are very excited to unveil today Paola Pivi’s exhibition ’We are the baby gang’ at Perrotin New York! 🐻 Please join us for the opening starting at 5pm! - Paola Pivi’s body of work is deeply personal and enigmatic. We are super happy to open today John Henderson’s exhibition ‘Model’ at Perrotin New York! Please join us for the opening starting 5pm! ✨ - For if the general narrative of painting is one of building, of progression, of declaration and assertion, Henderson’s work insists on alternate—abductive—logics, one wherein that which is built anticipates being unbuilt and any declaration is coexistent with its amendment. Henderson’s works are assembled through a conceptual framework of best-guesses, suppositions, estimations, and—most importantly—reversals. Eventually, Henderson situates his work in the realm of the “perhaps.” - On view til June 8! _ @jbodyhenderson #Opening #Perrotin #PerrotinNewYork #JohnHenderson _ 🎨 Artwork: ‘Untitled Painting’ , 2019, Oil on canvas, 154.9 x 94 cm | 61 x 37 inch, Painting 📸 View of the exhibition at Perrotin New York: Guillaume Ziccarelli. Parallel to Art Brussels art fair on view April 25-28, take the chance to visit Pieter Vermeersch exhibition in Leuven, at Museum Leuven! On view til August 11! ✨ - The architectural context of the exhibition space determines Pieter Vermeersch’s selection of works and scenography for each new project. When he decided to venture beyond the borders of canvas, he soon ran up against a new border, namely that of architecture. This architectural context became like canvas to him, and is the surface on which he paints his murals. These murals consist of gradual transitions of colour. Nothing betrays the labour intensive and rational process required to create them. Brick or cellular concrete walls form the backbone of the exhibition. The rudimentary character of these walls contrasts with the almost perfect execution of the murals and other works in the exhibition. 🎨 - @pietervermeersch.painter @m_museum #perrotin #perrotinnewyork #lastdays #exhibition #pietervermeersch - 📸 Courtesy M Museum. #Throwback - On April 2nd, 2019, the renowned Fondation Bettencourt Schueller organized its annual concert at the Opéra Comique in Paris, for which this year Xavier Veilhan was given carte blanche for the entire visual design. He decided to call the evening ‘Obliques’. 🎼 - ‘Obliques’ was born from the meeting between Xavier Veilhan and choir conductor Mathieu Romano. In their search for a new scenic approach to choral music, they staged the voices of the Ensemble Aedes, Les Métaboles and La Maîtrise Populaire de l’Opéra Comique, in a « disrupted » scenic design of black and white lines and poetic lighting. The 112 singers presented a repertoire as much eclectic as it was challenging, in the image of the ongoing and diverse efforts of the Fondation Bettencourt Schueller who has been a patron to choral music for nearly 30 years. The unique event honored choir music in all its richness and diversity, the title ‘Obliques’ referring directly to the genre’s transversality and to Veilhan’s desire to privilege cross-over and intersection of the voices. According to the artist, "the original intention of ‘Obliques’ was to put the scenic and costume design at full service of the voices, thanks to the idea of camouflage. By concealing the singers, we become solely focused on their voices, naked, without any amplification nor effect. Their power comes from their multiplication, from which emanates a certain autonomy or even timelessness. To extend this form of autonomy I’ve developed for Obliques a simple graphic concept that gives it the visual efficiency proper to its aesthetic."✨ - @xavier_veilhan @opera_comique @fondationbettencourtschueller @mathieu.aedes - 📸 @dianearquescontributions and @marcginot - #obliques #choralmusic #scenographie #blackandwhite
Elmgreen & Dragset x Georg Jensen present ’THE BED’, a sculpture that blocks the signals of your phones, so you can focus on each other. 📱 - “Today the biggest threat to our love lives and relationships might be our use of cell phones and the increased time we spend on social media. We wanted to make something beautiful that could be displayed in the home, but that could also positively impact how people spend their time. ‘The Bed’ is both a sculptural object and a functional device that encourages us to put away our phones, as a shared ritual act” – Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset. ✨ - For the Wallpaper* Handmade exhibition “with Love” Georg Jensen chose to collaborate with acclaimed artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset, known for their witty and sometimes provoking comments on society and interpersonal relationships. This boundary pushing collaboration resulted in “THE BED” – a handmade object to be used as a cell phone slumber pod. Manufactured from solid 925 sterling silver, ‘THE BED’ is handcrafted by skilled artisans at the Georg Jensen smithy in Copenhagen, Denmark, who worked on this masterpiece for more than five months, bringing ancient craft techniques like hand-hammering, raising, soldering, annealing and polishing into play. The result is a stunning futuristic egg-shaped object featuring the characteristic sleek and streamlined appearance, which Georg Jensen is known for. - Artwork: ‘The Bed’, by @elmgreenanddragsetstudio in collaboration with @georgjensen @wallpapermag #wallpaperhandmade #georgjensen

#SaveTheDate - D-7 before the opening of John Henderson’s exhibition, ‘Model’, at Perrotin New York! 🎨 • Henderson’s paintings oppose a one-directionality and challenge the vocabulary most frequently called upon to recognize subsurface meaning. In as much as these works emphasize pentimenti, so too do they build upon its reverse; the palimpsest is achieved only in its opposite; sous rature is reversed. In these artworks, any continued additive act (any element that which follows, any process to-come) is in tandem with that which already exists previously: neither are privileged or permanent, no two things are clearly understood as one built upon another. - Please join us to the opening on April 25, 5-8pm! ✨ _ Artwork: John Henderson, ‘Untitled Painting’ (detail), 2019, Oil on canvas, 154.9 x 94 cm | 61 x 37 inch, Painting - @jbodyhenderson #Opening #Perrotin #PerrotinNewYork #JohnHenderson

#SaveTheDate - One week left before the opening of Paola Pivi’s exhibition at Perrotin New York! ✨ - We are super happy to present Paola Pivi 9th solo show with the gallery. The artist returns to New York 6 years after her last solo show which marked the inauguration of Perrotin New York on Madison Avenue, and following her successful solo show at Bass Museum Miami this Winter. 🐻 • • Seventy baby polar bears frolic, play, fight, nap, and explore the top floor of Perrotin New York. Instead of fur, the bears have sprouted florescent feathers. The polar ice caps are melting. In order to survive a changing climate, they have needed to adapt. Take the chance to see Otani Workshop’s exhibition at Perrotin Paris! On view til May 11! ✨ . Born in 1980, Otani Workshop knows tradition inside out. Because he learned the power of tradition during his artistic training. Because he travelled the Japanese archipelago for a whole year, looking for his sovereign forms and his raw materials. Because he is Japanese, and like all Japanese, he knows how much the past inoculates the present with its venom, knows how many lessons of modernity there are beneath his feet and over his shoulder. Silent and literally bulging heads, figures with their arms raised like praying figures, monumental middle fingers extended upwards, anthropomorphic vases, children, animals, soils, bronzes: Otani Workshop’s bestiary is a world in itself, a world in which dreams and tales converge as well as fantasies and daydreams, a world in which the queenly imagination and the kingly gesture triumph, in which forces and forms meet. _ @ota539 #OtaniWorkshop #perrotin #perrotinparis #bestiary #contemporaryart #exhibition - ‘Golden Child’, 2019, Bronze, 127 x 129 x 90.3 cm | 50 x 50 13/16 x 35 9/16 inch, Outdoor sculpture Courtesy ©️2019 Otani Workshop/Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd. Let’s take a look at Nick Doyle’s artwork ‘Fool Me Once Shame On You, Fool Me Twice Shame On Me’, part of the groupshow ‘No patience for Monuments’ currently on view at Perrotin Seoul, on view til June 8! ✨ - A bouquet of flowers, crafted in denim and decorated with metal wire and nails, juxtaposes the delicateness of its floral subject with the rough-cowboy-Americana evocations of its materials. The artist demonstrates how the two can all too often be ill-at-ease with each other. The peep holes he has inconspicuously included throughout also seems a timely comment on South Korea’s recent legislative measures to crack down on the surge in peeping tom devices installed in female restricted spaces. - Artwork: Nick Doyle, ‘Fool Me Once Shame On You, Fool Me Twice Shame On Me’, 2018 Denim, peep holes, electrical wire, steel wire, nails and embroidery thread on plywood 100 x 99 x 5 cm | 39 1/2 x 39 1/16 x 2 1/16 in Wall sculpture _ @genesisbelanger @julietuyetcurtiss @nickdoyle333 @hempton @ridleyhoward @jessie_makinson @gaheepark_meow @sarah.l.peters @cluvie @emaesmith @janssonstegner @rubyskystiler - #NoPatienceforMonuments #PerrotinSeoul #Groupshow #ContemporaryArt #UrsulaLeGuin • Organized by @valentineblondel
Have you made it to see Julio Le Parc’s exhibition ‘LIGHT-MIRROR’ at Perrotin Hong Kong? 4 recent paintings from the decades-long series Alchimie (2017-18) suggest, perhaps, the most enlightening thought. While they each derive intricate rainbow-like clusters of dots from simple geometric motifs that Le Parc realized within his signature fourteen color palette, their title points towards something beyond the strict execution of sequential procedures. - On view til May 11! _ @julio_le_parc #JulioLeParc #KineticArt #ContemporaryArt #PerrotinHongKong _ Credit: ‘Alchimie 385’, 2017, Acrylic on canvas, 100 x 100 cm | 39 3/8 x 39 3/8 inch, Painting
Have you made it to see « The Glorious », XU ZHEN®’s exhibition at Perrotin Hong Kong ? 👀 . Let’s take a look at ‘The Evolution’ series: it develops out of the ‘Eternity’ series, and although they stem from different spatio-temporal contexts, both exhibit cultural disparity against a global backdrop. Evolution further extends its creative tentacles to primitive art situated on the threshold of mainstream culture, transforming African masks and Dunhuang frescoes into a marvelous blend of cartoon and traditional art. XU ZHEN® thereby lays bare the cognitive transition generated by the Internet, in which the efficiency of hyperlinks and ever-accelerating channels of knowledge acquisition have led to complex and qualitative changes. _ @xuzhenmadein #XuZhen #TheGlorious #Perrotin #PerrotinHongKong - Credit: ‘Evolution–South Wall of Mogao Cave No.172, Makonde Mask’, 2018 Oil on canvas 280 x 200 cm | 110 1/4 x 78 3/4 in

Last chance to see Genesis Belanger’s exhibition « Holding Pattern » at New Museum, on view til April 14! 🙌 _ « Seemingly mundane items— from cigarette stubs to soda cans, handbags and stray pills—are rendered strange as they become surrogates for the body, evoking both comfort and disquiet. Belanger conjures associations rich in references from Pop Art to the Surrealist object to seventeenth-century Dutch vanitas paintings, yet her work’s psychic impact remains acutely attuned to archetypes of the present. Belanger’s elegantly smooth and supple forms often contrast with their darkly humorous insinuations relating to pertinent subjects such as mass production, chemical dependency, and the absurdity of patriarchy. » Margot Norton, curator of the exhibition _ @genesisbelanger @newmuseum @margotnorton #holdingpattern #genesisbelanger #newmuseum #newyork - 📸 Photo Charles Benton

🌀 Wishing a happy birthday to Josh Sperling! 🌀 - Born in 1984 in Oneonta, NY, USA Lives and works in Ithaca, NY, USA Sperling’s work draws on the language of Minimalist painting from the 60s and 70s, with shaped canvases as his main recourse. For these, he crafts intricate plywood supports over which canvas is stretched and painted over in a signature palette of saturated, sometimes clashing colors. In their three-dimensionality, Sperling’s works blur the lines between painting and sculpture, image and object. Mining a wide range of sources, from design to art history, Josh Sperling has crafted a unique visual vocabulary remarkable for its expressive quality and irrepressible energy. ✨ • Josh Sperling has an upcoming solo show at Perrotin Tokyo in July 2019 ! _ @joshsperling #celebration #birthday #artists 📸 Claire Dorn
Kim Chong-Hak’s exhibition ‘Vitality’ is still on view at Perrotin Paris til May 11! - Kim Chong-Hak considers his art “new figurative painting based on abstract painting”, building on his canvases an indiscriminate framework reflective of his devotion to even the tiniest of wonders. Mount Seorak is for Kim what Mont Sainte-Victoire is for Cézanne and Tahiti for Gauguin, and viewers grasp the sense of reverence Kim has for nature upon entering the gallery. There is a certain primitive exuberance in Kim’s largerthan-life vegetation that indicates renewal and rejuvenation, evoking the vigorous spirit of the artist and his joyous celebration of nature in all of its forms. 🌿 - @kimchonghak.official #KimChongHak #KoreanMaster #ContemporaryArt #Perrotin #PerrotinParis #Opening
One week left to see Emily Mae Smith’s exhibition at Consortium Museum (Dijon, France)! On view til April 14! 🙌 - The Consortium Museum presents the first ever institutional exhibition devoted to Emily Mae Smith, curated by Eric Troncy. It brings together about forty artworks made between 2014 and 2018 and gathered from international private collections. ✨ - « For Emily Mae Smith’s painting, which before anything else doesn’t hide its borrowings from the 1960s Chicago Imagists, with its vibrant colors, energetic draftsmanship, uninhibited Surrealist influences, a sense of the grotesque, flawless execution and boundless whimsy, there is indeed no current art scene to cling to. Among other artists from the Chicago Imagists scene, Emily Mae Smith quotes Christina Ramberg and Barbara Rossi; in fact traces from one and the other can easily be found in Smith’s work with feminine figures from the former and a color palette from the latter. Evidently, she furthers all of this by injecting into her paintings as much Pop Art as Surrealism, with on occasion a pinch of Art Nouveau that sits very awkwardly with contemporary art. » Eric Troncy, curator of the exhibition. - @emaesmith @le_consortium @erictroncy #exhibition #emilymaesmith #leconsortium#artist #dijon _ 📷 André Morin © Consortium Museum
Only few days left to see Michael Sailstorfer’s exhibition at Perrotin New York. On view til Saturday 13! Today let’s take a look at the work “TEAR PRESS” displayed on this occasion. . The installation piece “TEAR PRESS” is actually a hydraulic machine. Hydraulics, originally the study of liquid flow behaviour, are employed here to press teardrop-shaped coal briquettes destined for a “TTV” furnace in the form of a television set with a bronze chimney. The final work is no less complex than the idea behind it, which parallels the lost and obsolete nature of emotional experience in a rationalized and systematic world with that of a bleak industrial process of solidification. _ @michaelsailstorfer #perrotinnewyork #exhibition #installation #tearpress #focus #artwork __ Artwork: ‘Tränenpresse’, 2018. D-day! We are proud to unveil today the exhibition ‘No patience for monuments’ at Perotin Seoul. - In Ursula K. Le Guin’s 1986 essay ‘The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction’, she argues against a masculinist monumentalizing impulse of history, and offers up a different proposition for the way culture can exist and can be formed. This ‘carrier bag theory’ challenges that the first tool was in fact a vessel for gathering, and not an instrument of conquest, and that a male-centric society has conditioned us to negate the former in favor of a broader ‘heroic’ narrative. ‘No Patience for Monuments’, brings together the work of a dozen artists whose work and practices embrace multiple facets of Le Guin’s subversive push against the overarching historical narrative.
