Gallery Wendi Norris is pleased to announce representation of Texas-based artist, Ambreen Butt (b. 1969, Lahore, Pakistan). Using techniques rooted firmly in tradition, Butt creates works that explore the complexities of contemporary global politics, female identity and living as a Muslim in the United States. Employing actions including staining, cutting, ripping and tacking with repetitive urgency, Butt’s painted and collaged works on paper and large-scale resin installations espouse the radiant aesthetics of sacred geometries and Islamic ornamentation. INSIDE THE EXHIBITION | Leonora Carrington: The Story of the Last Egg __ Rarely exhibited, “Mujeres Conciencia” is the original gouache painting which became the mass-produced poster for the Mexican women’s liberation movement, an activist organization Leonora Carrington co-founded in 1972. Displaying the dual black and white goddesses exchanging apples of the opposite color, she subverted the patriarchal myth of Adam and Eve, while promoting an intersectional feminism symbolized by the ancient worshipping of both the dark and light goddesses as equal halves in the creation of all life. __ [image: Leonora Carrington, Mujeres Conciencia (detail), gouache on cardboard, 1972] __ #Leonoracarrington #intersectionalfeminism

OPENING NEXT WEEK | Leonora Carrington: The Story of the Last Egg ___ May 23, 6-8 PM at 926 Madison Avenue, New York ___ #leonoracarrington #gallerywendinorrisoffsite

gallerywendinorris

In this preliminary sketch from 1965, Leonora Carrington maps out her play Opus Siniestrus: The Story of the Last Egg. Visualizing the set design for her dystopian story about the last living beings on Earth, the scene depicted in this painting shows singing cannibals surrounding a cauldron in which Adam and Eve languish. In the final version of the script, the couple is replaced by Hopalong Cassidy, Hitler, Nixon, and Superman. Opus Siniestrus: The Story of the Last Egg explores themes of astonishing relevance, such as the myopic favoring of profit growth above all else. In the play, all the women have been killed except for the 80-year old Mina Mina, who comes to posses the last hope for future life: an egg. Throughout this exhibition, the egg appears as a symbol of fertility and the universe, an example one of her favorite axioms, “as above so below, as within so without.' Join us in New York on June 6th for a theatrical reading of the play at our offsite exhibition at 926 Madison Avenue. __ [image: Leonora Carrington, Untitled (preliminary sketches for the play Opus Sineistus)(detail), 1965] __ #leonoracarrington #thestoryofthelastegg #gallerywendinorrisoffsite

“Carrington was a seer, able to perceive those connections that lie beyond ordinary perception. In her paintings, bodies are unstable, moving between genders, species, life, and death, yet— as some have been saying for years, but many of us are only now beginning to understand— this is not fantastical at all.” . .
