Gonna need you guys to send me some extra #Brave vibes tonight as I am so, so very bummed that I won’t be able to make it to the @bravelikegabe 5k tomorrow — because I am in the hospital with an infection and need a procedure done bright & early in the AM. Literally the worst timing ever but I’m working with an all-star crew of friends, family, sponsors, and the ACCRF to make sure it’s a great race in St. Paul. . It’s not lost on me that maybe this is one of the most poignant ways to show just how critical research is. Cancer is nothing if not incredibly inconvenient and we need more options. I wish I didn’t have to show it in this way because there’s so many people I’d love to meet and catch up with tomorrow (including my grandma who I don’t see very often ❤️). . But I’m gonna be brave and fight these fevers and hopefully the procedure will help me out big time. 🙏 Prayers very much welcome. . Have a heck of a time out there and celebrate what you’ve helped support and accomplish through the research grant! So overwhelmed by the love and I can’t wait to hear the recap. ❤️ #bravelikegabe5k #bebrave #rarecancerresearch

Wishing the nicest guy we know a great 13.1 tomorrow here at the @magnolia #silodistrictmarathon! And of course sending all the best vibes to the thousands of runners here in Waco challenging themselves and supporting a great cause: the fight against cancer! Say hi 👋 to me at the 5k and I’ll give you a #runningonhope temp tattoo 🤗 I’ll be out there just having fun and getting to the finish line! See you in the AM! . #silodistrictmarathon #chipgainesismyhero #waco #magnolia #beatrarecancers #runningonhope

On Friday I was in the ER (again), today I somewhat unexpectedly got my stents replaced (they weren’t working anymore). But this quote reminds me to keep pushing on. Tomorrow I’m heading to California to take a much-needed getaway with the husband and see our fave band @thenational. Then we are heading to #silodistrictmarathon in Waco to support the awesome races hosted by our friends at @magnolia with our friends & family, and YES I’m still planning and getting excited to raise funds for rare cancer research with the @bravelikegabe 5k after that! Cancer can slow me down but I’m not letting it stop me. And now a shameless plug: ENTER THE BRAVE LIKE GABE 5k PLEEEEEASE! 🥳 And a hug and thanks to everyone who already has. 😊 Hope to see y’all in either Waco, St. Paul, or virtually! . Thanks @jacquelinealnes for these fun drawings! More in my story. 🤗

Keep showing up. — @des_linden . In a million different ways, on a million different days. . Honored to be on the same @brooksrunning team as Des and a tiny part of the inspiration that powered this tenacious woman to a 5th place finish at #bostonmarathon yesterday. She’s inspired me to #keepshowingup in my life as well! Maybe back on the track, maybe not — but wherever I am, I’ll be there. Check out the article in my story for more about Des’ race yesterday and future. She’s been so fun to cheer for I sure hope she’s not done yet! 🙏 . Here’s a departure from my regularly scheduled programming (mostly napping and scavenging for more food) to let you know that the ✨2019 Brave Like Gabe 5k✨ registration is open and we would LOVE for you to join our team! 💪 . The reason I’m using a photo from last year’s race is because I haven’t been running much lately. This new medicine (Lenvatinib) has been a tough adjustment but I’m getting in some walking, biking, and elliptical when I don’t feel like running. Small victories. 💖 I’ll spare you some of my other side effects because, at least for today, I ain’t here for sympathy! I’m here to ask for help. . Since my recurrence of a rare, incurable cancer called adenoid cystic carcinoma in 2016, life as I knew it changed quite drastically. And yet, it’s still a pretty good life. 💖 There’s still joy and magic and pain in my abdominal scar from laughing so damn hard. But the one thing that fills me up like nothing else is working with my foundation ( @bravelikegabe) and other organizations to make a world of better outcomes for patients who are or will be in my shoes. . April is Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month and one of the last things I heard from my doc last month was: “We’ve made so much progress on many head/neck malignancies, ACC is just one of the toughest and we still don’t have an FDA-approved therapy. I’m so sorry.” I don’t want anyone to ever have to hear that! It hurts my ears and my feelings. I can’t fund every single rare cancer type all at once (we will keep trying!) but we can join together for a run fueled by hope and take a big swing at ACC. 100% of your registration fee will fund a rare cancer research grant for the ACCRF. All we need is YOU to get this thing off the ground. If it’s anything like last year I know I’ll be absolutely floored by the support and generosity of my fellow humans. . Race in St. Paul is May 5th with @anderson_races with a free kids run and a mini-expo! Virtual run is again hosted by @athletebizusa and @strava is helping us connect to a leaderboard through their Strava Challenges. . Thanks for considering joining us! Link in my bio will show where to go to register for either race. . 💖 Gabe #runningonhope

How does @chipgaines make marathoning look so FUN?! Is it the pants, the tool belt, OR my jokes? 😂🤔 (Jk it’s obviously his jokes!) . There’s about 6 weeks left until we hit the pavement in Waco for the #SiloDistrictMarathon events — which means you can still join us! 🤗 Chip is going down in distance to the 1/2 marathon since checking marathoner ✅ off his list last year and I’m hoping to run the 1/2 as well after last year’s 5k. We both have a little work to do to feel fully ready for 13.1 miles on April 28th but I think we will get there. 💪 If you run consistently I would say you probably have just enough time to build up to a 1/2 marathon but if you want to keep it a little more chill, consider signing up for a 5k — I LOVE a good 5k! The link to register is in my bio and if you’ve always wanted to check out the @magnolia Market in person or enjoy the goodies at Silos Baking Co. or @magnoliatable — this is the time to make the trip! ✨ . I still can’t believe that a chance encounter with Chip & Joanna and their crew in NYC in 2017 led to friendship, support, and the creation of an awesome road race weekend in Waco with proceeds benefiting cancer research! Sometimes life surprises you in the best ways. ❤️ . #silodistrictmarathon #waco #magnolia #magnoliamarket #bravelikegabe #rarecancerresearch #seeyouatthesilos

Leaving New York slightly fitter than I was when I arrived last week, which really isn’t saying much. But hey I’m back out there so that’s something. 😅 . I even got in some spin/run doubles which are 100% painful but 100% worth it to get out in the fresh air I’ve been missing in MN (I stayed inside almost all winter 🥶) and also support @cycleforsurvival as much as I can! ✨ Cycle for Survival raised more in 2019 than any other year — $41 million+ going toward rare cancer research at @sloankettering. 🎉W😳W! Huge thanks to all who participated or donated this year (you still can through April 1!) — you are making a positive difference in this world. ❤️ . Is anyone running the @avlmarathon or 1/2 this weekend? I’m speaking at the pre-race dinner Friday night! Come say hey or send me Asheville recs. 🤗

💥BIG WKND💥on deck here in NYC! Final weekend of @cycleforsurvival — the national fundraising total is at $38 million AND COUNTING. We’re coming for ya, rare cancers. 🤘😈 . Let the sunset not be my time running out but only the hour of the day. 🌅 Sarah Kay . I have a shirt with this quote on it. Corny right? It’s gray with black cursive script; you’d have to look really hard to make out what it says. But I knew, and I liked the sentiment. I wore it under a sweater in late 2017 to an appointment where I got the results back from one of my scans. My tumors grew. I haven’t worn it since. . That’s the thing about most of my scans over the last three years — they’ve almost all been bad. No exception for the one I had about two weeks ago. Tumors are growing. One in my liver kinda decided to go rogue over the last 3 months. . This time, unlike most others, I knew this scan wouldn’t be good. For maybe the first time ever, my cancer was making itself known with symptoms beyond the ones caused by surgeries, treatments, etc. It started with intense itching, scratching myself until I bled on some nights. Justin wondering aloud, “I think your eyes are more yellow than usual. I’m not sure though.” Yellow-toned skin followed the yellow eyes, and at that point we were hoping I wasn’t in acute liver failure and *just* had a biliary duct obstruction caused by a tumor. . Fortunately, that was the case. I had an ERCP procedure last week at Mayo and it seems like the stents they put in are helping my bile ducts quite a bit. Small victory! I was completely knocked down by general anesthesia for a few days but I really am feeling (& looking!) better every day. . I’ve been in San Diego since Friday. What was planned as a training trip in December has morphed into more of an I-desperately-need-sunshine pick-me-up! Turns out trying to escape your problems with a vacay is harder when your body is the problem. 2.5 weeks ago I was actually getting fit. Back to square one today with a slow 3-miler accompanied by some vague abdominal pain I hope continues to fade. 🤞🏼 . Soon I’ll be starting a new drug with some pretty harsh potential side effects, but my cancer is at the point where I don’t have many (any!?) other options. . So here we go! I can’t do everything, but I can do some things. Like enjoy this beautiful sunset. ❤️

👆Just nailed her first track workout since August. 💪 👆Suffering from intense anxiety about her upcoming cancer scan next week. (October showed ‘stable disease’ which is fine but also not incredibly reassuring. 😬) 👆 A lot of different things at the same time. 🤷‍♀️ . 🤔 Physically, I’ve been feeling good but the mental side of living with cancer continues to challenge me. I can say with 100% certainty that I’m doing my best. My ‘best’ looks pretty different every single day — and that’s OK. 👌 I am hoping the scan will show continued stability but we will see if I get lucky for another few months; it’s out of my hands. 🙏 In the meantime I will continue with life-affirming activities that make me feel better and allow me to crack a smile. ☺️ . ✅ QT with family & friends ✅ Raising funds for research & creating more awareness for rare cancers. The 2nd @bravelikegabe 5k is happening on May 5th! ✅ Running!!!!!! ✅ Fun things — @spaceykacey 🤠🎶at Palace Theatre tomorrow night! #yeehaw . ❤️ That’s my #keepingitreal update! Bye 👋 Seattle/Snoqualmie/the lovely PNW! I very much enjoyed catching up with the crew over at @brooksrunning HQ, having my best week of training in a VERY long time (thanks @ladiahallie 🤗), and generally not freezing my face off when stepping outside. 🥶 It was the perfect way to get through the final stretch of #survivejanuary in MN. 👌Frozen tundra, arctic blast, indoor track, and treadmills — I am coming for you!!!! Best crew ✅ Great cause ✅ Incredible community ✅ . We can’t be sure since this is just Year 1, but we think the first Team @bravelikegabe at @cycleforsurvival crushed it. 💪 We pedaled our butts off, danced our faces off, and left with hearts full inspiration and gratitude. THANK YOU 🙏 to everyone who supported our team as we raised funds for #rarecancerresearch and to the entire @cycleforsurvival staff for their efforts today. I wanted my very best friends to feel the magic of this community and today’s experience most definitely exceeded expectations. We had SO. MUCH. FUN! 😎💫 . Current fundraising total is right around $16 million for 2019 Cycle for Survival events across the USA and we will keep cruising toward March with sights on surpassing last year’s total of $39 million — all of which goes directly to funding much needed cancer research at @sloankettering. ❤️ Hopeful heart over here for sure — thank you Seattle and thank you @ladiahallie, @juliegabrielson, @megherrick7, @emilykrichter, @malvanessel, and @csteil for being the ⚡️BEST⚡️ friends I could ever ask for (missed you @millssa @momma_tris 😘). 🥰 . #cycleforsurvival #beatrarecancers #jointhebattle #seattle #bravelikegabe #ravelikegabe #girlsweekend #rarecancerresearch

I’m at the point in my training block where fast running still feels (and looks?) a little awkward... but you know what helps with that? HILLS. ⛰ Long ones, short ones, treadmill ones, grass ones, trail ones, in 80° weather, in feels-like 8° weather (👋), solo, or with a much faster running buddy (👋 @justingrunewald1, thanks!). Just get yourself an incline and get moving because there are few running workouts that will get you as big of a bang 💥 for your buck 💵 than hill reps! They reinforce an efficient stride, improve strength & endurance, and are a safe way for connective tissue & joints to build into faster running. ⚡️ . FYI my alternative caption was something like: starts running to Seattle immediately after seeing the brutal ☃️💀 10-day forecast. 👀 Woof. We got lucky in MN with a mild December/early January but after 6 straight days on the treadmill last week I now feel it’s time to bring back my #survivejanuary hashtag— even though we are almost through it. Yay! 🥳 For me the winter is the hardest time to be a runner but I try to take it one day at a time, adjust workouts when necessary, and remind myself this is all worth it for the big summer goals. Pay attention to aches & pains, don’t be afraid hit the x-training to offset the slipping or if lots of treadmill running feels like too much pounding or is altering your natural stride. And if all else fails get out of town like I am for a few days! ✨ #teamtundra . **Thank You to all who have contributed to the team @bravelikegabe @cycleforsurvival ride this upcoming Sunday in Seattle! It’s an honor to ride for rare cancer research and I am so grateful for those who #careaboutrare and donate to this very personal cause. ❤️ Link is in my bio if you’d still like to contribute!** . #winterrunning #runmsp #hillshillshills #minneapolisrunners #bravelikegabe #cycleforsurvival #beatrarecancers #jointhebattle #runningonhope

It’s January and you know what that means — it’s officially @cycleforsurvival season! 🎉 Last year I was blown away by the magic of people coming together to break a sweat and support research to #beatrarecancers at a few sessions in NYC. I vowed to come back in 2019 with a @bravelikegabe team of my own and... We 👏 are 👏 doing 👏 it! 👏 . Cycle for Survival is the movement to beat rare cancers (through team-based indoor cycling events) with every dollar raised advancing innovative studies and clinical trials led by @sloankettering. About half of all patients fighting cancer are fighting rare cancers — most of which have zero FDA-approved treatments and little dedicated research funding. That’s a lot of people (including me! 🙋‍♀️) who need our help and support. ❤️ Your contribution will fight cancer and make a difference for people who have few, if any, treatment options. . I am so fortunate and thankful to have the support of many incredible people throughout my ongoing cancer battle — 7 of whom will be joining me in Seattle on January 27th to ride! You know at @bravelikegabe we are #runningonhope but we will be trading in our running shoes for bikes this time. 😊 Please consider supporting our team! Link to contribute is in my bio and I’ll also post in stories. THANK YOU ❤️ . #cycleforsurvival2019 #beatrarecancers #bravelikegabe #runningonhope #ridingonhope #rideforresearch

“Definitions of the word ‘scar’ say it’s synonymous with ‘blemish’ and ‘flaw.’ We call BS. At @womenshealthmag we think the body’s ability to rebuild itself, and the marks left behind, are both badass and beautiful. No matter where they fall, or where they came from, scars are a testament to power and survival — something to wear with pride. We’ll let these warriors show you. Every scar tells a story. Here, five women share theirs.” — @kriscann for ‘The Strength In Our Scars’ piece feat. @allymisslove @paige_previvor @robynlawley @alyssa.exposito ❤️ . I have a love/hate relationship with my scars from my battles with cancer over the years. I love that they’ve often given me back my health or improved my prognosis, but I hate that they have to be there in the first place. After my first neck cancer surgery in 2009, I cringed at my reflection in the mirror. “Ugh,” I thought. "I am never going to look the same again.” The surgery damaged my facial nerve and left me with a permanently quirky smile. 😁 The radiation that followed left a small, permanent bald spot on the back of my head. 1.5 years later I got my second surgical scar from a thyroid cancer diagnosis. I was not ready to be a two-time cancer survivor at age 24, but I figured it out the best I could and got back to living life and chasing my running dreams on the track. Although I felt unlucky, I was happy to be alive. I wish my scar story ended right there, but it doesn’t. The 13-inch scar on my abdomen is from a life-extending surgery I desperately needed in 2016. Six weeks after competing in the US Olympic Trials, doctors removed half my liver and a large metastatic tumor, resulting in this scar. 👆 I’m not sure I’d be alive today without it. It was hard for me to not be able to run for months afterwards but I’ve been blessed to get in some racing and quite a few miles since then. I’m not exactly cancer-free, but I’m still here: fighting — and running. My scars represent survival. My scars teach me to embrace my body and honor its strength. My scars are a physical manifestation of what often feels like an invisible disease. My scars tell my life's story, and I’m pretty glad it’s not over yet. ❤️

Hi! 👋 I took a social media break for most of December because —> holidays are just kinda hard sometimes (cancer or not). I’ll be back sharing more of the journey in 2019! 🥳 . Much love and thanks to @emilymcdowell_ for perfectly articulating how I feel this New Year’s Eve with the toast below. 🥰🥂 . A toast to the old you: If you feel inspired to use the new year to help you reset or change habits: great. And yet: The old you has survived every terrible day, every hard thing, every awful circumstance, and every heartbreak you’ve ever felt. The old you is a fighter. And that’s worth celebrating. — Emily McDowell . (Photo is old me by @kohjiro_kinno, swipe for original post from @emilymcdowell_.) . Happy New Year! 🎊 Cheers to YOU! xx Gabe

It’s here! 🎉 Today is #GivingTuesday and with all those wonderful gratitude vibes lingering since Thanksgiving last week, it’s easier to pinpoint the everyday things we take for granted and give them the thanks they deserve. 💞 Today is our day to say thanks by investing in those things for ourselves and others. Strong families. Clean air. Friendships. A roof over our heads. Healthy bodies. Home-cooked meals. Whatever you do today, I hope you pay it forward by giving to a cause that pulls on your heartstrings. ❤️ . At the top of my list, I am so thankful to be a runner. I learned lessons that have served me at every phase of my life — and it all started with signing up for middle school cross country and lacing up some sneakers. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️It sounds simple but that one pair of shoes can take you on the journey of a lifetime. I want more kids to have the opportunity to embark on that journey of self-discovery & health, and experience the magic of being a part of a team. 💫 . THIS is where #GivingTuesday comes in! @brooksrunning is partnering with @charitymiles to help underfunded high school teams get the gear and resources they need to perform at their best through the Brooks Booster Club. I had the honor of delivering the goods to St. Paul Central here in MN this fall and YOU can help us fund grants for more schools in 2019! ⚡️Here’s how: . 1️⃣ Download the Charity Miles App. It’s free and you can find it in the Apple or Android app stores! ✅ . 2️⃣ Log your miles! Start running and dedicate your miles to the Brooks Booster Club now through December 14th. ✅ . 3️⃣ Make a difference! Once Brooks reaches 10,000 miles through Charity Miles, the Booster Club can fund grants for TWO additional schools. ✅✅ . Thanks for reading! Let’s give the gift of running to more kids. 💞🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️Every mile you run can make a difference.

Justin had hoped to ring in 33 with another trail race at @thenorthfaceecs this weekend, but with the race rightfully canceled due to the devastating fire situation in Northern CA, we will be visiting and spending time (mainly indoors or with N95 masks 😷) with friends instead. It is awesome to see @thenorthfaceecs donating the race nutrition/resources to relief efforts in addition to the $30,000 prize purse! We hope to be back to run/spectate this event in the future but for now we are donating and sending our prayers to so many Californians affected by the wildfires. 💔 . These @bravelikegabe 5k photos are incredible (thanks to @retiro.photography 🤗) and simply make me smile while I’m a ball of anxiety at the moment. 😁 I cannot properly express my sincere gratitude to those of you who have helped me along this exhausting cancer journey. I am thankful to the many friends and strangers who have offered support in my fight and showed up for @bravelikegabe on its mission to fund rare cancer research as well. 🎉 Makes me feel a little less helpless. And the 5k was one of the VERY best days of my life. NBD. LOVE YOU GUYSSSSS! ❤️ . So the point of this is to let you know I’m down here with @justingrunewald1 at the wonderful @mayoclinic where I’ll have a second Therasphere/radioembolization for my liver tumors. We got some decent shrinkage last time (December) but WE 👏 NEED 👏 MORE! 👏 This isn’t a cure but it’s helping buy me more time — time in which we could potentially find a more durable, effective treatment. ✨🙏✨ This is a request for prayers or good vibes or whatever positivity you’re willing to send my way for my care team to do their thing and those magic beads of radiation to do their thing as well. 🔥 A swift recovery will get me back to training and racing very soon I hope! Intro to some new artists + old ones playing new stuff. 🎶 And our fave ✨@thenational✨never disappoint! . #goodmusic #goodfriends #goodvibes #goodnight #summerstuff #eauxclaires #iv or #artificialintelligence

“Your labor is your contribution to the miracle.” 💫 — @elizabeth_gilbert_writer . I SO needed this quote a couple weeks ago. It has been fueling me ever since I read it and is helping me find my place again this summer. Just a few weeks ago I was taking breaks to cry during my runs and seriously questioning whether or not I could get myself to go all-in with another training block in between cancer treatments. I let myself have a brief pity party but then I decided… why not? I may not know where I’m going, but that doesn’t entirely matter. I can and will put in the work. I will contribute to my little miracle of racing again. Sometimes, that’s all we can do. Often, it’s exactly what we need to do. So get out there and contribute to your miracle! 💫 . (And it turns out I’m fitter than I thought I was so this might actually be FUN! #stillgotit🔥😎) . #bravelikegabe #runningonhope #summeroffitness #iloverunning #rarecancerresearch #miracles

Cultivate it. Choose it. Believe it. Invest in it. Grow it. Share it. Be it. Pose next to it on the street. 👆#HOPE! ❤️ . I always leave NYC feeling a bit more hopeful — largely because of the inspiring work of the good people at @sloankettering! I am exceptionally grateful to work with my doctor at MSK and also be a part of the movement to beat rare cancers with @cycleforsurvival. 🙌🏻 It was an honor to speak at the #BattleSummit this past Wednesday and explain why it’s so important for me personally and for all rare cancer patients to advocate, share our stories, and use our voices to advance research. We can’t sit on the sidelines and wait for cures to “happen” — we must #jointhebattle! 💪 . This was a timely event because just over a week ago I found out that my liver tumors are on the grow again. ☹️ Not what we were hoping for! I needed some extra time to process this and figure out the next step before sharing. Turns out that liver-directed therapies are what we’re sticking with strategy-wise for now. Thankfully I’m still feeling completely normal and even gaining some fitness, so we want to keep that rolling! I’ll be having a second TheraSphere procedure at @mayoclinic in July and hoping for another good response from the ✨magic glass beads of radiation✨ — maybe even one that’s more durable! 🙏 That would be amazing. . In the meantime I’m gonna enjoy some lake time 😎 and more reps on the track! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️I’m getting better at living in the moment and not projecting too far into the future. My doctors are working on new treatments and I’ll continue to hope for the best. 💕 My focus is on the cool thing about the current “plan” — which is the fact that I can focus on running for a while and probably even get in a couple races after recovering from the radioembolization. September & fall races, here I come! Thanks again for all the prayers & well wishes. I appreciate it immensely. All the good vibes help me carry on with as much strength & positivity as I can. 😊 . #bravelikegabe #rarecancerresearch #runningonhope #cancerupdatefromgabe #happyfriday #peopleofmsk #cycleforsurvival #beatrarecancers
