Did you hear the news?! . Last week, a Kenyan tribunal canceled plans to build the country’s first-ever coal fired power plant, in large part due to resistance efforts by a strong network of anti-coal activists across the region. . The consequences of the Chinese-backed 1050 megawatt power project would have been dire for the community of Lamu and its inhabitants. Think premature deaths, dramatically increased carbon emissions, and damage to one the oldest and best preserved Swahili settlements in East Africa. . Thanks to activist groups like Save Lamu, a Global Greengrants Fund grantee, the future looks much brighter. Flowing through the small village of Jalcomulco, Mexico, the Los Pescados River is a world-famous destination for rafting and other recreational activities. . But for Jalcomulco locals, this river is so much more than recreation: it’s the very heart and soul of their community. . However, the future of the river hangs in balance, due to the proposed construction of a new hydroelectric dam. If built, the dam would stand 100 meters high and flood approximately 1,000 acres of arable land. . That’s why the people of Jalcomulco, with funding from Global Greengrants Fund, are mobilizing to protect the river they hold dear. Together, they are doing everything they can to ensure the survival of the Los Pescados for future generations. . Link in our bio to learn more. . Photo credit: Ivan Morales, FASOL
Daily reminder that gender justice and climate justice are inextricably linked. . Women are disproportionately affected by the harmful impacts of climate change on water, land, and clean air. Women walk farther when water and firewood run out, work harder to feed their families when erratic weather wreaks havoc on crops, and die at higher rates than men when natural disasters strike. . We must take action now. For us, that means supporting projects that consider the gendered impacts of environmental damage and climate change, and that promote a more just and equitable society. . Link in our bio to see a new piece by Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland, and Terry Odendahl, our President & CEO, on why we must act now on gender and climate justice.
Before you order that lobster dinner, read this 🛑✋ . For Indigenous Peoples living along the Moskitia coast of Honduras, diving for lobsters, sea cucumbers, and shells is one of the only ways to make money. . Unfortunately, this activity comes at a huge cost to the health of local people and the ocean. . The oceans in the area have rapidly become overfished, leading the men to dive deeper and more frequently into the sea to find lobsters. Many divers have developed serious and irreversible neurological damage as a result. . Now, the community is standing up for the rights of the fisherman and the environment. . Link in bio to find out how Global Greengrants Fund is working with the Miskito community to promote disability rights and environmental justice.
Happy World Environment Day! 🌎 “I would say that there exist a thousand unbreakable links between each of us and everything else, and that our dignity and our chances are one. The farthest star and the mud at our feet are a family; and there is no decency or sense in honoring one thing, or a few things, and then closing the list. The pine tree, the leopard, the Platte River, and ourselves - we are at risk together, or we are on our way to a sustainable world together. Indigenous and local communities that have lived in balance with the earth for centuries now find their cultures and the natural spaces they depend on under threat. . Global Greengrants Fund is the only organization in the world that places trust and decision-making power directly in the hands of communities to protect and restore their own land, biodiversity, water, and the health of their families. . We listen to community needs and then invest in locally-led action to monitor polluters and demand the cleanup of toxins and waste, revive critical habitats, and protect air and watersheds for future generations. . Happy #BiodiversityDay! We're constantly blown away by the beauty, vitality, abundance of plant and animal species living on our planet. . But did you know that nearly one million species are at risk of extinction? A recent UN report states that human activity and climate change are largely to blame for this crisis. . Today, we're celebrating the many grassroots activists around the world committed to fighting climate change and working for the preservation of our planet's species for generations to come. What do natural disasters have to do with climate justice? . Last week, just over a month after Cyclone Idai wreaked havoc across Southern Africa, Cyclone Kenneth struck the coast of Mozambique, adding insult to injury. . And those most affected by the cyclones? They aren’t the heads of transnational corporations or government officials who continue to extract oil and natural resources next door to where the consequences of the storm left the most damage. . In fact, those MOST affected by the cyclones are the LEAST responsible for the resource extraction and carbon emissions that exacerbate these destructive storms. . Global Greengrants Fund recognizes the need for lasting solutions, which is why we continue to provide funding to grassroots organizations in the months and years following a natural disaster. We also believe that the right to a clean and healthy planet is something we are all entitled to, which is why we support communities worldwide as they fight for justice. . VICTORY! . On April 26, an Ecuadorian court ruled in favor of the Waorani, indefinitely blocking the entry of oil companies onto ancestral Amazonian land for oil exploration activities. . The Waorani people have called the Ecuadorian Amazon home for thousands of years. This precious rainforest is one of the most biodiverse places on the earth, and a key source of food, medicine, and shelter for the tribe. . Yet today, wedged between two bustling oil fields, the Waorani’s ancestral territory is vulnerable to the Ecuadorian government’s plans to auction off swaths of the Amazon to oil companies. For years, the Waorani have led an exceptional resistance campaign to protect their sacred homeland, supported in part by Global Greengrants Fund. We're so thrilled that their efforts paid off last week. . The news is a major victory and a huge step forward for the Waorani, but the fight isn't over. This Bavarian lynx is pretty cute, right? Sadly, it is a critically endangered species in Macedonia, with only 35 remaining. . But thanks to the woman on the right, there's hope for this lynx's future. . Meet Ana Colovic Lesoska, a biologist-turned-activist from Macedonia. She led a seven-year campaign to cut off international funding for two large hydropower plants planned for inside Mavrovo National Park, one of Europe’s last undisturbed natural areas. By standing up to Macedonian and international financial institutions, she protected North Macedonia’s oldest national park, home to abundant wildlife and endangered species such as the Balkan lynx. . Ana and her organization received 6 grants from Global Greengrants Fund since 2006, to put pressure on these financial institutions and to educate the public on the threats these mega projects pose. We're so pleased that on Monday, she was awarded the prestigious @goldmanprize for her leadership and activism. . Here in our Boulder office, we have an Earth Day tradition where we clean up the ecosystem in our very own backyard. Our office sits alongside a beautiful creek, surrounded by tall grasses, which are oftentimes teeming with trash: single use plastics, abandoned bike parts, fast food wrappers, you name it. So we take a moment to get outside and show our Earth a little TLC. And we have quite a bit of fun in the process, as you can see here! We hope that you're feeling inspired to take action to protect our shared planet: not just Earth Day, but everyday. Perhaps riding your bike, observing "meatless Monday," or facilitating your own trash clean-up day. What action will YOU take to show the Earth some love? In the Niger Delta, Shell’s toxic mess of oil activity decimated local people’s precious land, water, and resources. While the government promised an extensive cleanup of the area, which began a few years ago after a 10-year delay, locals are still drinking contaminated water. . Local women in Ogoniland are taking matters into their own hands, with the help of $4,000 from Global Greengrants Fund. They’re cultivating a nursery. They’re replanting destroyed mangrove forests. And they’re determined to restore the natural environment to the beautiful ecosystem it was before Shell spilled millions of liters of oil across the ecosystem they call home. . Their struggle is not isolated, as environmental activists around the world fight every day for a cleaner, healthier future for all. Mangroves play a critical role in protecting communities from the harmful effects of climate change, like flooding from rising sea levels, which threaten both the balanced ecosystem and traditional ways of life in coastal villages. . Mangroves store two to four times more carbon than tropical rainforests. When they are cut down, they release dangerous amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. It’s a daunting statistic, but reversible thanks to the efforts of groups like the Pari Women’s Development Association. . @martinwestlakephotography here, with the last day of the Global Greengrants Fund takeover. . Chatting with Agatha, it became quite clear that life in the village was extremely difficult before the re-introduction of sorghum. Due to the hardships of village life many of the women were forced to leave their families and become migrant workers in other parts of Indonesia. For these women sorghum has provided independence and financial stability and liberated them from the constant cycle of drought and poverty.
This is @martinwestlakephotography on day 2 of the Global Greengrants Instagram takeover. . Maria Loretha, activist who has revitalized traditional farming practices in her Indonesia community, helped over 60 families in the Likotuden area to plant 30 acres of sorghum. She used heirloom seeds collected after months travelling from village to village in search of the seed varieties that once grew in this region. The initiative has been so successful that it is now being adopted in other areas of Indonesia.
Hi, this is @martinwestlakephotography taking over for Global Greengrants Fund for the next 3 days. I’m a British photographer based in Jakarta, Indonesia. I’m thrilled to be sharing with you photographs from a recent project on the Women Farmers of Likotuden, East Flores. . Since 2007 Maria Loretha has championed sorghum and re-introduced it to farming communities in East Flores. For decades the Indonesian government has supported mass rice + maize planting and the cultural shaming of people who ate sorghum. The arid rocky soil in the villages of East Nusa Tenggara is too poor to grow vegetables or fruit and despite the use of expensive chemical fertilisers the rice crop frequently fails leading to poverty, malnutrition and debt. Drought resistant sorghum thrives in these conditions and thanks to Maria’s initiative has now returned as the primary daily staple.

Climate change and subsequent damage to water, land, and clean air impacts women disproportionately. They walk farther when water and firewood runs out, work harder for less when erratic weather patterns wreak havoc on crops, and die at higher rates when natural disasters strike. . To confront these pressing environmental challenges, women must have their voices heard. Astonishingly, less than 1 percent of international philanthropy goes to women’s environmental initiatives. That must change. . Solutions to climate change exist on the frontlines of the battle to save our planet. Grassroots women leaders are already stepping up to the challenge. Global Greengrants stands in solidarity beside these leaders and promotes their rights to, and solutions for a safe, healthy, and clean environment. . #womenandenvironment

"Providing funding for women and the environment recognizes that women are at the frontlines of environmental struggles and do not experience the same challenges as men.
