Before there was support or precedent, Toni Morrison was there, writing her heart out in her car, on her way to an editor's job where she championed other writers. She is and always will be a miracle. Read every one of her words.
Though thankfully prepared remarks were not required (I still get so nervous I lose all my saliva), when I received the news of this Honorary Doctorate, Yale asked me if I had any words to share with the graduating class: I wish you work you would want to do, even if you were not paid, and friends who are chosen family. Then you can withstand all the storms of life and become who you uniquely are.
We’ll never stop marching
Mother’s Day is coming up and these great bracelets by @birdandstone are here just in time. Most exciting is they will donate 10% of all proceeds to the ever-essential @feministcamp! Purchase at the link in my bio. I often say I see “mother” as a verb: as in to be mothered and to mother — ah, then the very best of human possibilities come into our imaginations. And we are all able to mother, whatever our sex or our age or our abilities. To mother is to care about the welfare of another person as much as one’s own. To mother depends on empathy and thoughtfulness, noticing and caring. To mother creates the only pairing in which the older and the younger, the stronger and the weaker, are perfectly matched. It reminds us all, whether we are young or old, male or female, of the possibilities that lie within us and that we cherish in others.
I’ve taken to saying I can’t follow myself, but now I have to eat my words!
Let’s create the change we want to see in the world. Together. Join me on April 5 for a 1-day event: Revolution from Within. Learn more at the link in my bio. #womentogether #revolutionfromwithin
On this #internationalwomensday, let’s remember to listen as much as we talk and talk as much as we listen. Thanks @lazard for a wonderful event this morning!
Finishing up tour for the 3rd edition of Outrageous Acts with a #tbt to 1983 on the road for its original release. My airplane “desks” are still this messy!
“One’s life has value so long as one attributes value to the life of others, by means of love, friendship, indignation and compassion” — Simone de Beauvoir (today would be her 111th birthday!)
📸 by @heymsamelia, a dear friend I ran into by chance at the polls — the most important place to be today. Vote like our democracy depends on it, because it does.
I recently had the chance to visit Betty Reid Soskin, a 97 year-old National Park Ranger, the oldest in the nation. If you’re in the Bay Area, try to spend the afternoon with her in the Rosie the Riveter Park where she holds forth — nobody leaves the room quite the same as when they came in.
Today, more than 98 million adolescent girls are not in school. That’s a lot of empty desks. That’s a lot of dreams that are being cut shortS that’s why today on International #dayofthegirl, I’m proud to join @michelleobama and the @globalgirlsalliance to stand up for adolescent girls’ education. Join us — because the future of our world is only as bright as our girls. #globalgirlsalliance
We need some defiance!!
80% of childhood learning occurs visually. As a child of itinerant parents, I learned to read by road signs. Without glasses, I’m not certain the road and my love for reading could or would have been the same. And so I collaborated with @warbyparker to design a pair of glasses in support of #pupilsproject. This program brings free eye exams and glasses to students in need. 💯% of each purchase will support #PupilsProject, so get your pair via the link in my bio! Thx to my fellow collaborators @bkbmg @chloessevigny @humberto @lenadunham @nikolai_fraiture @the_real_iman @rosariodawson #franlebowitz #marylouiseparker
Just enjoyed a wonderful evening of conversation with dear friend @barbaranessim and was reminded of the importance of friends that continue to encourage you when you can't encourage yourself.
I made it to the polls today, make sure you do too!

The best organizing meetings start at a dinner table. These napkins are one way to get the conversation started.
It’s impossible to come here and not be transformed. Even if you think you know the inhuman realities of lynching and its evolution into the death penalty and mass incarceration today, you won’t leave as the same person you were when you started. @eji_org @bryan_stevenson_offical
